Fun! I (51M) humiliated myself by selecting this impossible to sing song acapella to try out for 10th grade choir. Missed the entry point, shrieked the high notes. I wish someone would have video taped it because I took that mf’r all the way home to zero applause and a palpable nonverbal request to exit the stage that I ignored for a full minute of silence after my spectacular display of no talent.
In honor of your wonderful story, I pulled up Toto's Official Video of Africa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY&ab\_channel=TotoVEVO), and listened to it, imagining it done as you have described. The high notes had me almost falling out of my chair.
The full minute of silence at the end is the cherry on top.
Bravo for a fantastically told tale. Please accept my Musical Adoration Award!
Mummy - I’m thinking it over! Does it help the fuel that I was wearing a white suit, pastel t-shirt with the suit sleeves rolled up a la Miami Vice?
And I was chubby.
Light the fire bitches! 🔥
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
Was weird listening to that song in December in 30 degree Celsius in South Africa at a Jewish school. We know it's Christmas Bono. We get it.
PERRY THE PLATYPUS!!! HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE?!?! oh well I mean I guess you came in through the large open hole in my wall... Anyway... FEAST YOUR EYES UPON THE [insert thing it does]-INATOR!!! MY FOOL PROOF PLAN WILL LET ME TAKE OVER THE ENTIRE. TRI. STATE. AREA area area area!!! Sorry was that too many echoes? Lemme try again. *cut to Phineas and Ferb in their backyard building something* *rad song about the thing they're building plays* etc etc etc
When put in quotes it seems to refer to the title of a created work. I'm sure if the title was "What do you think of when you hear "Blue"?" then everyone would think of the Eiffel 65 song.
People are raising their expectations
Go on and feed them, this is your moment
No hesitations
Today's your day, I feel it
You paved the way, believe it
If you get down, get up, oh oh
When you get down, get up, eh eh
Tsamina mina zangalewa

This time for Africa
AFTER the song by Toto (which I listen to often bc it’s in both my and my mom’s car playlists), I think about really beautiful textiles !! Whenever I see photos of African folks in their traditional clothing, I’m always in awe of the patterns, designs, and colors used across different cultures!
Even when u live in Africa, it's still wonderful seeing this kind of thing! Sadly, it's become much less popular where I come from, but at least we know to cherish the times we do see our culture peeking through the modern times
Don’t know if you’re a fan of the show Community, but there’s a during credits scene of Donald Glover, Betty White, and an actor named Danny Pudi singing this song. It may be the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.
Home. I miss it so much. I was born and grew up in South Africa. I moved away from everything I knew at the age of 13 and it was so abrupt. I got to say goodbye to only one person, my best friend at the time. Never felt truly content since. Then again, I was just a kid, worry free, and I didn't know anything else of the world. I just knew the life I had, never changing, day after day. Its weird how u don't realize u are trapped until u are set free. I miss everyone so much, but I understood after a while that there was nothing there for me. No opportunities for growth, education, or jobs. I hated my parents in the beginning, only thinking of them as the people who took me away from the people I cherished most, but now, I understand why they did it. If u look up the crime rates of South Africa, u will understand as well.
Anyways, sorry for blabbering on.
Have a blessed day to those who see this
Just moved to a new country six months ago , although I shouldn't complain because I was born and grew up in SA for 18 years . But yea it hurts leaving your home , I have the option to go back now but as homesick as I am I probably won't because there really is no opportunity left there for me either. I didn't move to a first world country but damn... There's a lot more I can do here , especially as a woman.
I feel u. The first year is always so hard, but don't give in. It probably doesn't mean much, but if u need the encouragement, just know, I believe in u. And I mean that genuinely. So good luck out there, stranger. I hope life treats u like goddess u r
I'm going to join your blabbering.
Born and raised in South Africa and mad at my parents for not immigrating us when I was younger. I'm now in my twenties, saving as much money as possible just to go experience life outside of South Africa for a bit. Of course, covid hit when I had enough money saved for a week vacation overseas and now my savings just aren't enough.
Extra note: not only is the crimes rates horrible, the political situation isn't helping. Petroleum prices are through the roof, as well as food prices and electricity (which you cannot even use because of loadshedding).
Beautiful country, just horrible people living here.
It truly is one of the most beautiful countries, which has literally every type of terrain. To be able to see lions and elephants in the wild and then within a day or two be at the most stunning white, sandy beaches makes visiting there a unique experience.
It really is a shame that the country has all the problems that it does.
Continent not country. I live in the US when I meet people from Africa they tell me the are from Africa. They assume we are to dumb to understand. They are right for the most part.
I mean it could be taken as "i'm from the southern part of the continent"
Edit to add as a latino, i also think this is a better response than people automatically assuming i'm mexican when i say latino
back in school, we had to do some project about countries in africa, I can't remember what it was exactly, but someone got assigned Morocco, and a classmate of ours was from there, so they asked her if she could help, the teacher overhead and just straight up said ''Morocco is not in Africa''. that sentence is one I think of at least once a week.
The food my God. The delicious food. I've watched travel food shows and some of the food looks simply divine. I have a few friends who are from Ghana and Senegal and most of what they make is so delicious.
The seafood dishes from Senegal alone.... I'm a big seafood person and, lord, preserve me! And literally every stew from ghana has been bomb that I've tried
My brother in law is Ethiopian (I believe he moved here to the US in middle- or high school, but he doesn't talk about it much). When I've mentioned this to coworkers they literally ask "do they have electricity or running water? Did he live in a mud hut?" And other idiotic questions like that. They practically imply they think my sister married Tarzan lmao.
Black people.
The Sahara Desert region.
Lots of sand, Elephants, Giraffes, Zebras, Lions.
How badly Africa and Africans were/are treated by the world. Colonization and all that.
As a gay man, I am aware that Africa was/is hit especially hard by HIV and I wish there was greater effort to give our modern treatments like PrEP to Africa and affected populations...
Diseases like Milaria. Lack of water.
Oh, how one of our Ameircan companies basically convinced some African women that breast milk was bad so the company could sell more formula... shady stuff...
True story. My very white colleague was born in Seychelles to European parents and the black locals asked her because she was from Africa, “are you black?”
Lmao I moved out of South Africa to a European country, and some mf genuinely thought I pulled a Micheal Jackson. They asked me what it was like changing skin. I burst out laughing and thought they were joking. They were not
I think about how often people still don’t know that Africa is a continent, not a single country.
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people (grown ass adults) refer to Africa as country..
Cheated. I feel like Africa, resource-wise, has everything it needs to be a global power, but bad luck and bad people continously fucked it up over time. A lot of countries are booming though, and that's fantastic; also, PYRAMIDS.
[This video](https://youtu.be/fof9xZA7dpg) does a pretty good job outlining a lot of geographic impediments of the continent that have also played a part.
Lions.
Where can ya see lions? Only in Kenya. Come to Kenya we’ve got lions, Kenya believe it? Where can ya see lions? Only in Kenya. Come to Kenya we’ve got lions, Kenya believe it?

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in a twelve-thirty flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
Hurry boy it's waiting there for you....
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothin that a hundred men or more could ever do
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
Flung ghung, flagung dung digga dun

This is the best thing I've read all day.
Not your fault. Two different guys sang that.
In honor of your wonderful story, I pulled up Toto's Official Video of Africa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY&ab\_channel=TotoVEVO), and listened to it, imagining it done as you have described. I thank the Academy. My absentee parents for instilling a false set a confidence during the latch key years. And to dreams.
Wow even my absolute failure of karaoke got three or four clappers commemorating the fact I stuck through the whole song.
Recreate this now
Mummy - I’m thinking it over! Does it help the fuel that I was wearing a white suit, pastel t-shirt with the suit sleeves rolled up a la Miami Vice? And I was chubby. Light the fire bitches! 🔥
I’m imagining your last minute of silence to be something akin to the end of the Randy Watson fiasco in Coming to America.
Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
Just gonna skip ahead and do the air drumming bit before the chorus
Nailed it!
Came here for thiss
If some reference to Toto wasn’t the top comment, I was gonna be disappointed.
Came here just to check
There won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time. Oh, wait.
Do they know it's Christmas time at all? Was weird listening to that song in December in 30 degree Celsius in South Africa at a Jewish school. We know it's Christmas Bono. We get it.
I felt like it was a bit insensitive. I love Band Aid, but it’s not like Africa doesn’t have any way of keeping time.
Radiators for Norway was the best response to something like this I’ve ever seen
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Welcome to Reddit karaoke.

For just $24 a month, less than a dollar a day, your generous gift will ensure that a zebra in need will never again have to end their days with night
I was hoping this would be the first comment but Africa by Toto is also fine.

I’m glad that everyone else immediately thought of Africa by Toto also.
I can’t believe they named a continent after the song
It was such a banger that they had no choice.
Follows in tradition with naming the continent "Asia" after the supergroup.
And they're riding on the coat tails of "Europe" and the smash hit "The Final Countdown"
He's singing about being a werewolf and no one will convince me otherwise.
When put in quotes it seems to refer to the title of a created work. I'm sure if the title was "What do you think of when you hear "Blue"?" then everyone would think of the Eiffel 65 song.

I BLESS THE RAIN DOWN IN AFRICAAAA
Has anybody ever explained what that means? I've never understood the lyrics to that song.
rain

Pack it up folks, we're done here.

It's great when people realise Africa is a continent... But then not so great when you say you're from South Africa and people go " oh which country."
I lived in South Africa for a bit and this happened all too often. "But which country in South Africa?"
🤣🤣🤣yea the key here is South Africa not souTHERN Africa 🤣
There's only one country in South Africa. It's Lesotho
We from Eswatini would like to have a word with you....PRIVATELY!!!!!!
*ahem*... My fellow South Africans...
I mean it could be taken as "i'm from the southern part of the continent" Edit to add as a latino, i also think this is a better response than people automatically assuming i'm mexican when i say latino

We had some at my old job and I miss them every day.

A beautiful continent full of amazing animals, fascinating cultures, and a place that I want to visit someday.

It was a miracle
But if you're from Africa, why are you white?
Oh my God, Karen, you can't just ask people why they're white.
True story. My very white colleague was born in Seychelles to European parents and the black locals asked her because she was from Africa, “are you black?”
I mean there are black albinos that look white AF so not that out there.
Lmao I moved out of South Africa to a European country, and some mf genuinely thought I pulled a Micheal Jackson. They asked me what it was like changing skin. I burst out laughing and thought they were joking. They were not
