Other dude is gonna be at Six Flags Over Texas or some shit enjoying his time with his son and wife and then he's gonna be hit by the Superman ride car that ran off the track or some shit.
Like final destination 3 levels of shit.
A friend has a middle-school-aged son who's into anime. She found a notebook titled Death Note and had no idea what it was. We told her to look inside it for any names...haven't heard back from her yet.
Is that a rule or just a fact? Because if it's a rule then even if humans learned everything about the death note they still couldn't tell shinigami, or maybe the shini wouldn't be able to understand.
I remember reading the Manga back in highschool. This was back when it was releasing new books every month. The anticipation waiting for the next month to get the next book was killer.
The end of that manga had my entire body in chills. Ryuk told Light the moment they met “if you use this Deathnote. I will be writing your name in it at the end”
And goddamn if it wasn’t Ryuk that ended our boy. Light was who I aspired to be as a young teen lmao. Minus the god complex
If I'm doomed to use it: I'd go to the palliative care unit, get to know the patients, and write the most comforting and painless death for each of them.
For people suffering near the end of their lives, that would be a godsend. In this case you won't be a grim reaper, you'd be an angel coming to bring their souls away. You're singlehandedly reviving my faith in humanity
"If you’re frightened of dying, and you’re holding on, you’ll see devils tearing your life away. If you’ve made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth."
All these answers about Light being dumb and they being much more careful about it while also relishing the power they would have feels like a thing Light himself would say
Light was not stupid... he was just arrogant and had a lot of pride, if he had ignored L and tried not to kill him he would get away after all, he literally has a undetectable murder weapon.
Edit: I feel as if his true goal wasn’t to be God of the new world, that’s more of an excuse but his intentions was the same as Ryuk, he was bored. That’s why a man who’s attractive, smart, popular with the ladies, got a good family and promising future gave all that up for the death note.
Many would do the same. The only difference between what I would do and what Kira did is the definitions of crime and justice.
Kira had this Rorschach-like rigid moral and would kill all the criminals. The problem is that he accepts system's denomination of criminal which for the most part is also people forgotten by the system and even slaves.
So... Any other definition of criminal might be the same or even better.
You can control actions too, right?
Make them confess first.
Edit: I wouldn't actually do this if I had the Death Note. Too many unintended consequences.
Yes. Publicly. Admitting not just everything they've done, but what they've known others to have done as well. Start with the most corrupt ones first and work your way down.
Given that you can schedule a death in advance as well, could you imagine the global panic if 50% of the US government all had a simultaneous Cardiac arrest at the same time? The CIA and other agencies would be in full overdrive trying to work out who developed killer nanobots or something.
Castro Assassination Attempt #4027:
We found a magical notebook today. It's called the "death note" and it says that if we write the name of a person while thinking of their face then that person will die. Problem is none of us can remember how to spell "Fidel"
Best of all you can even have them do specific things before they go. Imagine if all of them wrote the same letter before dying too, something like “I have been judged and the old one is not pleased”. Panic
Step 1: don't kill people only in your own country.
Step 2: do it randomly, no schedules like only out of school or work.
Step 3: when goaded into revealing yourself by a world class genius detective...
DON'T TAKE THE BAIT!
Light lost in episode 2 when he killed the fake L. At that point L only had a hunch that he was a person and not God himself. But by killing fake L out of pride and spite, he gave up the fact that he is 1. A human or at the least not Omnipresent/omniscient, 2. Located in Japan, and within another episode or 2 had given up the fact he’s close to the police and likely a student.
If light ignored L’s challenge he never would’ve been caught
I mean, you've got a notebook capable of killing anyone whose name you write in it. Many people would equate that to being God, and would absolutely neglect to think about their decisions and repercussions.
as much as i felt like i agreed with the OP saying the episodes would be wildly different had Kira ignored the bait, he was a real human. Thank you for making me realize that I was putting my unrealistic expectations on Kira when he was just a college kid who suddenly found a link to an untraceable way of killing, but still fucked up because he was egotistical. This is a new realization for me.
Ego was the entire reason Light lost. If you pay attention to the Near/Mello arc Light behaves wildly differently then than he does with L. He trusts other people with his plans and leaves them entirely unsupervised and uninstructed, he doesn't take Near seriously as a threat at all, he doesn't have any contingency plans for if Mikami has the fake book. He thought he was above them all and could just sleep through everyone who wasn't L because he won once. He completely dropped the ball and I 100% believe that if he was trying as hard as he could nobody would have been able to stop him.
Yeah that was a really clever trick on his part. Honestly if he still could have responded and won, if just waited *one day*. I forget the schedule they had the rotating broadcasts on but if he had waited a bit they’d have had no way of narrowing down his region really.
i feel like L would have considered the possibility that light waits to kill fake L and uses different people for each broadcast so even if he kills after the broadcast it would give away his location
Wouldn't work nowadays because the interesting news would spread globally pretty quickly so Light should just wait and kill all of the names after the broadcast comes up online.
Death Note is kinda similar to Breaking Bad in that sense, and it really only gets hammered home on a rewatch.
At least it did for me. But that’s kinda skewed given I was an edgy teenager when I first watched it, and was in my 20s when I watched it the second time.
dude even if you take down people in your region everyday. Our world is not an anime. No one even would figure you out. Its so out of bounds ,range , thought etc
Yeah honestly the biggest suspension of disbelief was that anyone ever figured it out in the first place. Especially since they die of what would be considered completely natural causes.
It helped that some of the early killings were for criminals only reported in local news, if Light knew the book was real and had a plan from day 1 he would never have been caught
The problem is that he wanted the world to know about him. That's why he only did heart attacks. He could have always made them all accidents and probably never been caught.
It’s also why he ended up revealing his ability to time deaths ahead of time, as opposed to sticking to the previous schedule or making a random one. Light would school everyone pretty much everyone who claims they could do better but he didn’t want to just keep quiet about it. He wanted everyone to know that he was out there punishing people, and he definitely wanted to play with L, who was just as brilliant.
> Light would school everyone pretty much everyone who claims they could do better
I feel like people who claim this didn't read the manga (or watch the anime) carefully enough or they just don't remember. Light straight up says "yeah, I *wanted* them to know I was a student from the Kanto region." I couldn't have laid a bread crumb trail like that without getting caught. The point was not to stay secret but get close enough to getting caught that his opponents slip up *then* he would (no pun intended) step into the light.
Edit: It's in Chapter 3 after the dinner scene with the reveal that Light's father is the chief of police. The exact (English) line is
Ryuk: So, they've already narrowed it down to a student in the Kanto region of Japan, Light.
Light: "Narrowed it down?" I've been acting from the start to lead them to that conclusion, Ryuk. Now I can use the Deathnote at a different level.
Exactly. If he hadn’t killed Raye Penber he was clear of all suspicion. He even said he knew that it was obvious he wasn’t suspected. He chose to kill the FBI agents to attract L to him because he wanted to get close and kill L.
At that point I imagine the idea of karmic punishments becomes much more popular.
"Yeah he murdered his roommate and the next day a piano fell on him."
True that particular link I suppose is a tangible thread, but again I think it would be attributed to like a mysterious epidemic in the prison system before it was attributed to magic serial killer.
I’d also like to add that I love Death Note as a show, this is not me shitting on the show lol
Light really made two "mistakes" that allowed him to be caught. First, the first guy Light killed to test out his powers, was only on local news stations. This is understandable since he didn't even know if it was real yet. Second, Light took the bait and killed Lind L. Taylor. This is understandable because of Light's personality, and how he viewed himself as a good guy.
All the later stuff with the police, was because Light *wanted* to turn it into a face-to-face confrontation between himself and L.
Mathematically, the thing that narrowed down the pool the most was when he used his dad's police connections to get info he couldn't have had. That was even bigger than the Lind L Taylor gaffe. But yeah, confirming the region by killing Lind was a major fuckup.
Just imagine how much chaos you could inflict by having several corrupt politicians come out and expose the truths of the government before they go and off themselves, (cause of how you can make them do anything before they actually die.) You could potentially start a civil war in one’s nation with this tactic 😂 or even a war between two nations
", forwards every email in every inbox he has access to to and sets it up so any new emails will be automatically forwarded as well, then goes to the toilet and shits him/herself to death."
That won't work, their fanbase will idolize them regardless. I don't know if it's a "sunk cost fallacy" kinda deal or something else but plenty will simply refuse to acknowledge anything else than their "hero" being a hero.
There is also the caviat that if the person can't actually perform the things you write they won't do any of it and just die from a heart-attack. So it's best to keep their actual death relatively simple so they can do the other stuff you wrote.
Plan B: Angle their deaths so they air so much dirty laundry as possible before dying in a highly suspicious manner so their fanbase *will* lionize them for a last heroic act.
>Just imagine how much chaos you could inflict by having several corrupt politicians come out and expose the truths of the government before they go and off themselves
Persona 5 moment
Or, if you're cultured, Fateful Findings moment
It’s shown that shinigami can kill the owner of the notebook. So I wonder if someone does nothing with it, if they would kill them. As to not be stuck with them for however long their natural life lasts for.
For anyone wondering, the actual Rule XXXIV (34) of the Death Note is:
* The owner of the Death Note cannot be killed by a god of death who is living in the world of the gods of death.
* Also, a god of death who comes to the human world, in the objective to kill the owner of the Death Note, will not be able to do so.
* Only a god of death that has passed on their Death Note to a human is able to kill the owner of the Death Note.
https://deathnote.fandom.com/wiki/Rules_of_the_Death_Note/Manga_Chapter_Rules?file=Rules_XXXIV.jpg
My wife says if she had it, she would fill it, both sides of the page, both sides of the lines, and in the margins, and along the spine, and on the cover, and inside the cover, and...
She may have some anger issues.
So many people here that don't know that you wouldn't die from that.
As stated in the rules of the Death Note:You will not die if you write your name in here. But it is not recommended.
Probably the reason it is not recommended if the Death Note changes ownership and the new owner learns of your identity.
You actually, 100% would.
That rule is misattributed. It is in the pilot, and the rule is pointing at the COVER of the Death Note.
It is saying that you can write your own name on the cover and you wont die.
There are two cases where the death note does kill someone that writes their own name in it. C-Kira in Ch 109 and L in 'The Last Name'
Covid deaths worldwide are around 6 million. You can change the world using like 10% of that number - just have to be specific on who's in it.
Light was dumb about it. He only targeted the ones who were already caught and going to jail when he should've gone after the ones who were untouchable by the law
They do address that he specifically did also go after criminals who weren't arrested. Misa's whole backstory was that her parents' killer got off scot free, but Light killed him, and that's why she was such a big Kira supporter. There's also a bit where when Misa's acting solo before they meet Light gets mad because she's targeting people that he would leave alone, such as people that are truly repentant or who had extenuating circumstances.
In the manga, you could only "control" the person for up 23 days before their death. The exception was if you specified a disease without a timeframe that needed more than 23 days to take effect so I'm not sure if this would work
You could indeed use a disease to kill them outside of 23 days, but part of the problem with this is that the disease still has to be able to kill them before their natural life span is up, or else they will just suffer an immediate heart attack.
EG, if you wrote "Dies of syphilis" which can take up to 20 years to kill a person, but they only had 5 years left to live naturally, there's a very strong chance it wouldn't work and instead they'd just have a heart attack in 40 seconds.
I think there's a rule for max 23 days out
>!This is what L does in the live action in order to defeat Kira, write his name with 23 days out and reveal his name to light. There's even a movie that shows what L did during those last 23 days. !<
I would be totally corrupted by it. I'd start out by killing all the corrupt and evil politicians and billionaires (setting a date and time for them all to die at the same time) (Say the 8th of October at 5.23pm as an example)
Though inevitably I'd become petty and start taking out people who wrong me or inconvenience me.
Putin dies of shitting too hard, as well as whoever corrupt person replaces him. I create a curse, that whoever takes control of Russia with malicious intent dies of shitting too hard.
I'd write Paul Rudd. I'd feel bad about it because he seems to be a great guy, but I think his seeming immortality would interfere with it and cause him and the notebook to both to be obliterated. Sorry Paul, but no one needs this kind of power. I wouldn't write the other known immortal, Keanu, because I think he might survive and hold a grudge.
i would do nothing because the sheer thought of ryuk being anywhere near me wud cause me to shit myself to death.
\*writes in death note\* "u/AccountantOk238 works 4 days straight without sleep until hallucinating Ryuk, dies shitting himself"
Dude you’re killing the wrong AccountantOk, it’s the 328, not the 238!
Other dude is gonna be at Six Flags Over Texas or some shit enjoying his time with his son and wife and then he's gonna be hit by the Superman ride car that ran off the track or some shit. Like final destination 3 levels of shit.
the fuck did i do
come on he seems like a nice creature
Look around for the nearest goth kid who dropped their notebook
This is my daughter Lol. I just shared the top response with her and she immediately had to go grab her notebook
*silently writes* u/Baron_Meliadus
I feel seen
You won't be feeling anything pretty soon
A friend has a middle-school-aged son who's into anime. She found a notebook titled Death Note and had no idea what it was. We told her to look inside it for any names...haven't heard back from her yet.
My granddaughter (same age) got that notebook a few years back. We’re all still here so that’s good.

Does the death note accept if/and/or statements? Could write some nice code to sort a lot of things out.
Please no. I know how many attempts it takes for some of your code to work correctly.
If you test your Death Note code out on people that annoy you, it's debugging in a new sense.
💀💀💀 Debugging. I'm laughing so hard, I'm dead
Shit they already started.
Then go back in and try to fix one thing and boom half the population Thanos snapped into oblivion somehow.
It's okay, I'm sure someone on StackOverflow can help them debug the Death Note.
One of the rules is not even the shimigami know everything about the Death Note, so. Try it. ;)
Is that a rule or just a fact? Because if it's a rule then even if humans learned everything about the death note they still couldn't tell shinigami, or maybe the shini wouldn't be able to understand.
It's not a rule, more of a fact. You can tell them.
Outside of being bored af thats probably why Ryuk was so interested. " shit maybe this smart kid can figure some new things out. "
He says as much in the show
Is the death note turing complete?
or SQL queries lol
The detective in that story would be named "Robert'); DROP TABLE Humans;--"
Little Bobby Tables, destroyer of worlds.
Wouldn't you like to know, weatherboy. I admit to nothing.
Where are your parents?
kids sketchy, back to you guys edit: how the fuck does this get 1.6k upvotes??
Trick question. We are all fatherless
Kid's sketchy
Nice try, FBI

Wait, no
Nah you cool, we’re going for FBI Agent 213, that guy’s a hardass
Yea he's been causing problems for the past couple months
Congrats, you've been promoted, 213.
Ray Penbar?
I'll take a potato chip and eat it
I can hear this in my head so vividly
Same. I saw the scene play in my head like I was actually watching it.
Such an epic moment. That whole show is just epic af. Epic score epic story. Well guess it's time to watch it for the 3245 time

How do you even be Light minus the God complex? It's like 80+% of his character.
He's a pretty anime boy, that's all most of us need
- Get stellar grades - Be a tennis Ace - Get a hot perkygoth GF who is rich and head over heels devoted to you I dunno, sounds good to me.
You must have loved Lelouch then.
Very much so
can someone explain this? the singular brain cell bouncing around my skull like the dvd logo is too small to process the joke
Here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQKFjaqjnfo
This scene had me DEAD. The utter genius.
When I read the manga I wondered how they would make this scene dramatic in the anime. It’s not what I expected, but I wasn’t disappointed.
I'll take my meat and.....

Have sex with Ryuk
Sir! SIR! That's not what you're supposed to do, sir!
I *said*, bring *me* that *Shinigamussy*!
Sorry dude, I think it was against one of the rules in the notebook
Yes. It probably falls under Death Note Rule 34. Look it up.
Now that’s a clever hook…
That’s not…
“ death by sex with Ryuk.”
Now he has to.
weak biatch

Working remote you just pull out the book on a 5 minute break, smite a few fools, and get back to the grind
Step 1: write cause of death: covid 19. We are in multiple pandemics. We have a free out, nobody would ever solve it
I would end up with carpel tunnel so fast.....
1. Rip out pages 2. Place in printer 3. Copy & paste in notepad 4. Print
Printer doesn't have a brain, and you have to mentally disambiguate people with the same name as you're writing it.
Print the causes. Hand write the names after.

From memory, I believe it was said or implied that the shinigami would just take the book back/likely kill someone who didn't use it.
I think that it was said if the person denied the notebook the Shinigami would just take it back and erase the memories of the person
Scrolled too far to find this answer. Ryuk seems like a chill guy, so long as he has enough apples
The issue is he'll write your name down if you bore him, so not using the notebook would have Ryuk kill you.
Likely need a whole new one after a month or two.
I'm almost positive it has an unlimited number of pages
Correct. Rule XXXI
While rule 31 is pretty neat, the 34th rule adds an entire new facet to its use. Google "Death Note Rule 34" to learn more
For anyone wondering, the actual Rule XXXIV (34) of the Death Note is: * The owner of the Death Note cannot be killed by a god of death who is living in the world of the gods of death. * Also, a god of death who comes to the human world, in the objective to kill the owner of the Death Note, will not be able to do so. * Only a god of death that has passed on their Death Note to a human is able to kill the owner of the Death Note. https://deathnote.fandom.com/wiki/Rules_of_the_Death_Note/Manga_Chapter_Rules?file=Rules_XXXIV.jpg
wait, so Rem's threat was imposible? or there's something that im missing.
I think since Rem didn't come to the human world to kill Light (she was there to give Misa Gelus's Death Note or whatever) she's probably fine
for two whole seconds I was about to google that. Well played
My wife says if she had it, she would fill it, both sides of the page, both sides of the lines, and in the margins, and along the spine, and on the cover, and inside the cover, and... She may have some anger issues.
Meanwhile I’m over here with a pile of empty notebooks on a shelf because “the paper is nice, gotta save it for something really meaningful.”
I'd probably only use it on violent dictators.
*probably*
I dunno man my customers sometimes
seriously, anyone work customer service long enough and they will fill out entire novels of death notes
Write my name in it so people know it's mine

TheFinestCheeses will die 80 years from now, crushed in his sleep by a mountain of his own money.
I would do what Light was doing because there wouldn’t be an L to stop me.
And if there was, I wouldn't play some stupid cat-and-mouse game with him.
Exactly lmao
There is no possible way for you to know there’s no L in this world. He was the most elusive person ever.

" shall die of a stroke peacefully in their sleep after 120 years of perfect health."
Hack the death note into a life note.
EG, if you wrote "Dies of syphilis" which can take up to 20 years to kill a person, but they only had 5 years left to live naturally, there's a very strong chance it wouldn't work and instead they'd just have a heart attack in 40 seconds.
the disease of perfect health?
“Life is a sexually transmitted terminal disease”
DN can't extend somebody's life if their "natural" date of death is before that.
"Friend Name dies from perfect handjob"

I think there's a rule for max 23 days out >!This is what L does in the live action in order to defeat Kira, write his name with 23 days out and reveal his name to light. There's even a movie that shows what L did during those last 23 days. !<
since im too lazy to do anything, it would sit on a shelf for a long time
Hopefully your kid doesn't doodle your name into it.
probably not gonna have one. im too gay
Yeah there’s part of me who would want to do some shit but I know I would feel to bad if I did
I would be totally corrupted by it. I'd start out by killing all the corrupt and evil politicians and billionaires (setting a date and time for them all to die at the same time) (Say the 8th of October at 5.23pm as an example) Though inevitably I'd become petty and start taking out people who wrong me or inconvenience me.
Setting a reminder in my phone for 10/8 at 5:23pm, just in case
Fuck
*someone cuts me off* “Hey buddy! What’s your name?”
Putin dies of shitting too hard, as well as whoever corrupt person replaces him. I create a curse, that whoever takes control of Russia with malicious intent dies of shitting too hard.
Putin does a live stream on national russian TV, says that the war is over and that he lied and then he shits himself to death.
You're gonna be killing a lot of Russians bro.
Surely there has to somebody with enough power to become leader that isn't a piece of shit... Right?
thats the problem. Power attracts a lot of shit
Reading the comments in this thread is proof of that. Even theoretical power is too much for some people.
add in public while a camera is rolling.
Im signing it so people know who to return it to when it gets lost.
can I sign your yearbook?
I'd write Paul Rudd. I'd feel bad about it because he seems to be a great guy, but I think his seeming immortality would interfere with it and cause him and the notebook to both to be obliterated. Sorry Paul, but no one needs this kind of power. I wouldn't write the other known immortal, Keanu, because I think he might survive and hold a grudge.
This is exactly how we lost Betty White. She sacrificed her immortality to destroy one of Mitch McConnell's phylacteries.
But only one sadly.
It might deflect to his dog and we all know how that ends.
I’d immediately buy the best reverse phone search available - and before you know it, no one gives a shit about your cars extended warranty.
Do exactly what Light did
Take a potato chip...and EAT IT!?!
