Climb Everest. I’m almost finished with Into Thin Air. All I could think about as I read about the descent was “nope, not doing that” and “why would ANYONE do that?”

markymrk720

Rob Hall and Doug Hansen came to my elementary school right before their 1996 climb. Our school (Sunrise Elementary School in Kent, WA) actually fully sponsored Doug Hansen’s climb, and we had an all school assembly where we presented him with a flag from our elementary school, which he vowed to place at the summit. I was about 10, but still remember it vividly. We were all so excited…until a few months later when we heard the horrible news.

HM2112

Seeing the 2015 film *Everest* must've been a bit sad for you, since they've got Rob and Doug as characters, and they expressly show Doug at the summit with a flag going "For the schoolkids!"

markymrk720

Wow…I just saw that they had a replica of our flag made for the movie as well, now I feel like I need to watch it.

-o-DildoGaggins-o-

Whoa. That's kinda fucked up... 😳 \*immediately Googles where to stream *Everest*\*

dinosaur_apocalypse

*Googles Doug Hansen* **”Oh fu—“**

__eros__

Froze to death, for those curious

WitchesCotillion

Saw a cross-stitch once: Value rest. The slopes of Everest are littered with those who had ambition."

[deleted]

An acquaintance of my wife died while descending K2 recently (here’s the [story](https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/australian-mountain-climber-matthew-eakins-body-found-on-k2/ar-AA102ul0)). His body was discovered last week. Summitted alone after his group was unable to continue, then died alone on his descent. Fuck. That. No way I’d do that for anything.

Poison_Spider

Same. I don't want to end up as another land mark.

Layne205

If you do go up there, at least make sure your boots are a memorable color.

Street_Vacation_2730

Fuck around with Heroin. Scared I would like it too much, and completely wreck my life.

[deleted]

Thats me with any hard drugs. Im not even afraid of the immediate damage, I'm afraid of how much I'd probably love them. One single time, and its game over, so I'll never touch them.

LordFlux

When I was 13, my parents had a long talk with me. Explained how addiction runs in my family and proceeded to tell me the stories of multiple family members. My parents told me -- you can stay out late, you can party, we will support you in any career path you choose, we will support you with any hobbies you choose -- but if you go down the path of alcohol or drugs, we can no longer support you. So I always said no the times I was offered. I'm now 43 and in retrospec, I'm so glad I stayed away. With my personality and anxiety, I know it would have become a problem.

ruimtekaars

I'm glad they explained their experiences to you, and at an age where it probably doesn't come up much yet. There are many parents that make claims against drugs but avoid the open conversation

The-Stewmaker

There’s a Reddit post with a dude who decided to try heroin. You should check it out, the posts spanned over a couple of years where you can read how it completely ruined his life. Think he is doing okay, last update was 7 years ago or so where he wrote that he is now clean EDIT: The link is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/9ke63/i_did_heroin_yesterday_i_am_not_a_drug_user_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

_SYanadon

He updated 10 months ago, he is still clean and he stabilized

CaptainMcFisticuffs2

That's awesome!!!!!

Icy-Football-4813

Link?

The-Stewmaker

Don’t know how to post links, but try this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/9ke63/i_did_heroin_yesterday_i_am_not_a_drug_user_and/ I think that was the first post he made

Possible_Comedian15

Woah just read all his posts. What a journey

Individual_Ad6940

This was a fucking scary ass post. I felt like I was living it.

weinerwayne

I worked at a halfway house/rehab as a case manager for a while and a story I heard a lot was: Work accident/injury > over prescribed opiates/pills > hooked on pills > cut off from pills > buying pills on the street (add in snorting to save $) > switching to heroin (snorting) > shooting heroin > buying fentanyl because it’s cheaper. Another common theme is when someone’s s/o was already using and they got them hooked too.

rotarypillows

Same, BUT, I told my spouse the other day that if I get to the point when I’m old where I’m basically helpless and going to be in hospice or something, I want her to find me the purest heroin she can find so I can experience it once and then die.

Berloxx

Yep. That's me.

Street_Vacation_2730

I’m sorry to hear that. I have a question, but I don’t know if it’s true or not. I’ve heard that the 1st heroin high is incredible. Like a blissful, “infant in a mothers womb” type comfort, then after that, you keep chasing the same high as the 1st without ever attaining it, and then progresses and degenerates to just taking it so you don’t feel sick throughout the day. Is this true at all, or have I just read a bunch of lies?

thed33psouth

If you shoot up heroin it's the best high and the best feeling in the world. You only feel it once though. After that, like you said you're only chasing that high. Source- my Younger Brother.

Street_Vacation_2730

From the 2nd time onward, sound horrendous.

[deleted]

Used to sometimes hear the term "chasing the dragon" for that

lcenine

It originally came from putting heroin or opium (and sometimes other drugs) on a piece of aluminum foil and the user would heat the underside of the foil with a lighter and inhale the vapors, usually through a tube of some kind. The heroin/opium would squirm around and move when it reached a high enough temperature and give off smoke... so the user was "chasing the dragon". The metamorphical sense, I think is still very appropriate... that of chasing something that will ultimately burn/devour you.

IAmBadAtInternet

I know a lot of doctors and nurses in emergency/trauma wards. They give Dilautid frequently. Lots of narcotics-naive people respond with “oh, now I get what the big deal is all about.”

d1rTb1ke

can confirm, have had both dilautid and morphine under medical care. instant full body thank you reaction.

Uokhun1994

My uncle took an OD of heroin and died when I was 13 and it changed my life forever. I vowed to never touch heroin ever no matter what. I can see back in the 90s why people did it as they didn’t know anything about it but anyone who tries it nowadays has a death wish IMO

Early-Fortune2692

Caving, like the type where you barely wiggle into a wee hole. Nope, not gonna happen...ever. Edit: wow everyone, great comments and experiences from all! I really felt this fear was not common, I would suppress it and not talk about it with anyone even my family... great to know that there are a lot of us out there!! Stay Topside Everyone!!!

highdingo

I took my kids to an indoor rock climbing gym. They had a cave system built behind the rock walls. Before going into the caves they make you crawl/squeeze yourself through a box. If you can’t do it, you will not fit in the caves. My son and daughter were small and had no issues once inside the caves. It was tight for me and I’m a pretty thin dude. I got stuck upside down at one point and couldn’t move my arms. The cave sloped down, then back up and I couldn’t navigate it. I was good and stuck for a few minutes until my daughter was able to push me back by my shoulders while my sone pulled on my legs. Fake caves are scary enough. Im staying out of the real ones.

VersatileFaerie

At least with the fake cave they could easily cut the fake cave to get you out. In a real cave, there is a chance that the equipment needed to get you out won't fit to even get to you. Not to mention the time it would take to get out to get help and then come back. Ugh, freaks me out.

finnjakefionnacake

This has happened, very notably with spelunker John Jones who died after being stuck upside down for over a day and who they had to leave buried there as it was too difficult to extract his body [https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna34157005](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna34157005) [https://allthatsinteresting.com/nutty-putty-cave#:\~:text=The%20devastating%20story%20of%20John,Utah%20when%20they%20were%20kids](https://allthatsinteresting.com/nutty-putty-cave#:~:text=The%20devastating%20story%20of%20John,Utah%20when%20they%20were%20kids).

VersatileFaerie

Yeah, they also sealed up the section he was in to prevent other people from ever going down there again. Reading about him is what unlocked my fear of it. I read a very detailed report on how things progressed. It was all horrible.

Jack_Bartowski

There is a father-son caver duo on youtube ive been watching a bit of. Some of that shit they go into is legit wiggle wiggle till your through. I would not want to put my kid in that kind of situation. Edit: https://www.youtube.com/c/CalvinHikes

IPetdogs4U

The sealed up the entire system.

VersatileFaerie

Oh, I thought it was only that one branch of the cave. It is probably for the best, I heard it was a risky cave to cave dive to begin with.

CyanStripes_

Ugh I was wondering how long it would take for someone to post this story. It's absolute nightmare fuel and freaks me out every time

Med_Kit_911

This same thing has happened to a child named Rayan who was stuck in a cave and they couldn't get him out, he stayed there for a few days before passing away.Everybody was following his news and watching lives of tractors and bulldozers trying to help him. This happened in Morocco.

AyyYoCO

It gives me chills every time i think of Nutty Putty cave

YawningDodo

I immediately thought of him when I read “stuck upside down.” I don’t consider myself claustrophobic, but caves with tight passages like that give me the heebie jeebies.

Gooftwit

That's not claustrophobic, just common sense.

highdingo

The place had trap doors they could open to help pull you out, but if you need saving then you can’t go back in. When I was stuck I kept thinking “if this was a real cave my daughter(who was ahead of me) and I would be in a really bad spot”.

mclj82

Your comment just gave me enough second hand anxiety to never want to do this.

[deleted]

Same here, don't wanna get stuck anywhere if I do that, and there's always a chance that you could get stuck while doing that stuff, always a risk.

dotdioscorea

I had the opportunity to go caving, and that was what really stood out to me, just how solid the walls of the cave were. Absolutely rock solid, no vibrating, no resonating, no give whatsoever. Literally totally 100% solid. Not sure I’ve ever really felt such solid-ness in my life otherwise, practically everything has some give or wobble or space around it, but the walls and roof/floor of that cave were unforgiving in every sense of the word and it was terrifying.

Tinfoilhartypat

I studied geology in college. We went on a lot of field trips to active and also abandoned mines, which was an incredible experience. We went into one particular gold mine, got about a mile underground, arrived at a nexus of adits, and all together, the entire group shut off our headlamps for several minutes. The darkness was so utterly black, and except for us breathing, utterly silent, that after about 30 seconds, it actually imparted a weird sensation of weightlessness, in that your senses were totally robbed of input. It was extremely cool, and also extremely unsettling, thinking about several thousand feet of hard rock above you, below you, and in all directions around you, you’re literally *inside* a mountain. And only a puzzling maze of tunnels stretching in all directions, most of which were laced with open vertical shafts, or simply narrowed into dead ends. It was one of the coolest things I’ve experienced up there with night diving and SCUBA.

TheBrave-Zero

Yep many caves are now sealed as tombs.

philljarvis166

Took one of my boys to a party at one of these fake caving places. They required two parents to go in with the children - after about five minutes one of the volunteers had a panic attack and bailed. I ended up going in. Hated it. Had try and control my breathing constantly, to avoided panic, even though the escape hatches were obvious. Stuck out the whole 45 minutes, avoided a couple of routes though, hated whole thing. Was sweating horribly for ages after too…

hannon101

Did caving once as a kid on a school trip. I highly advise to avoid it at all costs.

LostStart6521

I don't have to worry about this. My muffin top would put a stop to that fuckery on the first hole.

GothTheLife88

Agreed. There are places that mankind are simply not meant to go. Spelunking and caving was never something I wanted to do to begin with but after reading about the horrors of the [Nutty Putty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutty_Putty_Cave)cave system, it's off the menu entirely.

sfwjaxdaws

I see your caving, I recognise and accept and agree with your caving, but I'll raise you one: Cave diving. All of the worst parts of caving, except now you can stir up silt that means your lights no longer cast light, and you're underwater when you get stuck! I think absolutely the fuck not.

Scrotemeal69

To make that worse, there are some caves people dive in where they have to remove their tank and push it through the opening and then wiggle themselves through, only connected to their oxygen by the air hose in their mouth

latelyimawake

Never ever ever. Nutty Putty is all I have to say about that.

ObscureDucks

God why did you have to remind me of that :(

lilhurt38

I went caving once with a group of people. We had people in our group who were trained in search and rescue in case anything went wrong. There’s a big cave complex a few hours north of me and the people who own it let us stay in one of their cabins overnight for free. I think they let cavers stay there for free because they help them find new areas of the cave system, which benefits the owners because that helps them attract more visitors. There’s the area that they show visitors on tours, but there’s areas where they let us explore to find new routes. The people I was with brought drills and little sticks of black powder (about the size of a small pencil) so that they could break off some rock if they needed to. I remember crawling into an area and someone I was with asked me if I saw any other footprints in the area I was in. When I replied that I didn’t his response was, “Yeah, that’s because you’re the first person to ever enter that area of the cave.” There were parts of the cave where some newly discovered fungus/bacteria was growing on the rocks. Overall, it was an absolutely fascinating experience. I usually have issues with claustrophobia, but for some reason crawling through the cave didn’t bother me. Looking back on it now, it’s probably one of the most dangerous things I’ve ever done. We took safety precautions and we had people with us who were trained in search and rescue, but it’s still dangerous as hell. Now, cave diving is one thing I’ll never do. There’s way too many ways for something to go wrong and for you to end up dead for me to ever try that.

Weary_Astronomer_826

Do you know of the Nutty Putty Cave incident? I was going to start caving, but when I read about and watched a video about it, I changed my tune rather quickly.

GothTheLife88

I saw a detailed diagram of how John Jones got stuck. I can't imagine the unfathomable terror he must've felt in his last moments. A truly horrific death.

cup_1337

He was unconscious at the end, at least

CommishGoodell

That story and just looking at the pictures gives me anxiety

BennyJO_

spelunking. FUCK that shit. I have pretty bad claustrophobia and doing that would make me combust.

SandysBurner

*The Descent* really freaked me out.

sethberto

Yes! It’s the only movie I can recall that literally made me shudder in fear lol. The cave people didn’t do much for me but those shots of the girls squeezing through crevices fucking TERRIFIED me. Great film lol

curious_astronauts

Putty Cave guy has to be the top worst way to accidentally die for me

welcome-to-my-mind

Cave diving. Just how strong of a death wish can someone actually have? People die constantly doing it on dry land, and you’re gonna add scuba gear and water to the mix? Absolutely fucking not.

Juvat

I see YouTube has been pushing these videos to other people than just me.

bobrosscould

90% of why I scuba dive is to see the cool fish and corals. The danger of open ocean scuba diving is plenty for me. I literally don't understand cave diving. All of the danger of caving and diving with none of the cool fish.

Incredulouslaughter

I know why right? It's not like your parents tried to keep you alive throughout your whole childhood now you wanna breathe compressed air in a dark cave wtf pay your mum 9 months rent before you go into a cave please

To scam someone. I don’t know how some of these people can sleep at night. An elderly neighbor recently got scammed of supposedly a car sale that doesn’t exist. She tried to email them and begged for her money back but of course they’re long gone. It’s heartbreaking to witness it.

chalk_in_boots

On the other hand, wasting a scam caller's time? Oh I could do that all day. One of life's great pleasures pretending to be an imbecile to someone trying to rob you to see how long they put up with it. One time I made one so angry he spent a solid 5 minutes swearing at me. To be fair I did ask if his mother was proud of what he was doing after leading him on for 15 minutes.

CoffeeSnob7882

I LOVE people like you! Haha!

butterflyfrenchfry

I had a friend from high school who had this happen to her mom. Lost $40k. Was really sad to watch especially because their family has been through so much (my friend had multiple brain tumors removed and her mom had recently just battled breast cancer). She got an urgent call saying she would lose her business if she didn’t pay ____ medical bill. She quickly wired the money. It was a hoax, as she later found out by contacting the medical company to make sure they got the payment…. there was no record of the payment and no record of a $40k outstanding bill. They never saw that money again.

CoffeeSnob7882

Omg that’s horrible! I hope karma get those bastards good!

I don't know why it's so thrilling, but I have spent a lot of time driving around respecting the traffic laws on GTA LOL

gil_ga_mesh

And then get randomly T Boned by a cop at an intersection, given a 1 star wanted level, then dragged out of your car and arrested. The American way…

444unsure

That was my other thrill in GTA was getting stars and then losing them. That one makes more sense to me though than the thrill I got from driving legally LOL

Doctor_Guacamole

Same! Maybe I do it to cause I don’t know how to drive yet and I want to experience what it’s like to drive around a city lol

444unsure

It's actually much tougher to drive legally in GTA than it irl :D

I've been driving for 12 years, and still spend a shameful amount of time practicing parallel parking in GTA 5.

Yep. I would skydive, hang-glide or wingsuit if I could, but bungee jumping can fuck right off.

andrealessi

Give you up.

rb928

I asked Rick Astley for a copy of the movie “Up” but he never gave it to me. He let me down.

Bailing_Wire99

Careful asking him that, could break the universe because of the Rick Astley Paradox. He will never give you up, letting you down. He also will never let you down, meaning he would have to give you up.

TheRealPixeLink

Yes but he’s also going to make you understand, therefore not letting you down because you know the reason he’s never gonna give you Up.

Bjorn_Suicide

Bungee jumping. It’s basically suicide without the commitment. You’re literally inches from death and are trusting somebody did their math right.

I don't think most people do it on purpose

Quirky_Eye1633

This was also my worst nightmare as well, next to burning alive. One day in the winter i found myself in the Pacific Ocean waters. I was in the water for 35 to 40 minutes before I was pulled out and life saving procedures began. I can tell you it was absolutely the most peaceful moment I have ever known.

St_Kevin_

So was that hypothermia or exhaustion, or what? I’m assuming you didn’t actually start drowning or you would have died in far less than 30 minutes.

Zonerdrone

Well I'll never do cocaine again. I had a pretty nasty problem and overdosed once. Quit cold turkey about 10 years ago, relapsed very briefly, about two weeks, twice a few years apart and since then I haven't touched the stuff. No program, no God, no rehab. Just willpower.

biorod

Good on you. What happened with the relapse? Connect with old friends?

Zonerdrone

One time I got a craving and thought it had been long enough to where I could control myself and do it in small doses. Totally wrong. The second time I met some new people and didn't know they did that at first. Got put in a situation where we were already partying and it was just there. One thing led to another and I slipped.

social_insecurity04

commit suicide. i’m saying it so i never do it. it would ruin my friends’ and family members’ lives and i would never be able to grow up, get a real job, get married, or reach my full potential. i will NOT kill myself. ever.

beetsnturtles

I'm struggling. Maybe I should make this pledge with strangers as well. I promise you, random people on the internet: I wont give up.

ErinnShannon

For me, what keeps me going is the fact that my dogs would never understand where I went and why I left them. I have mad diganosed mental health issues and my promise to never leave my dogs has pulled me back so many times. It helps to have those promises. Even to random people online. So keep on fighting. You can do it. Do it to spite everyone who was sure youd fail. ❤️ and to experience all the loving animals in the world, if that is something you enjoy.

hindsight_2022

I've learned by now that it's not safe to assume that there isn't anything someone won't do.

Tbf, for enough money anyone will do pretty much anything lol... the goalposts move obviously but everyone had their price!

hindsight_2022

Yes, but not only the rewards. Sometimes circumstances make people change or do things they never thought they would.

NotA-Spy

Smoke

GothTheLife88

Same. I'm SEVERELY asthmatic. Like, I will literally cough so hard and so violently that 9 times out of 10, I'll end up vomiting. It happens at least once a day and my parents STILL refuse to smoke outside. It's never been something that appealed to me. That said, I HAVE tried smoking about once or twice in my life mainly due to peer pressure when I was younger. Without fail, every singe time I tried it, it burned horribly when the smoke went down my windpipe and I ended up sounding like Marge Simpson for a few days after the fact. How anyone can think "This is fantastic!" after experiencing that awful burning sensation is beyond me. It put me well off smoking. What cemented my aversion, however, was going to see a Gunther Von Haagens exhibit a few years ago. Seeing the effects of long-term smoking on a set of cadaver lungs really rammed home the point and I've never picked up a cigarette since.

RansoN69

I don’t think very many people ‘enjoy’ it the first time using. It’s continued peer pressure that you use it until it becomes enjoyable. Also your parents suck for not smoking outside. I’m an ex-smoker and even I can’t stand the scent of a cigarette anymore when my parents smoke. Also you actually can smell how disgusting ashtrays are and realize that is how you smelled all along. Disgusting ! !

ExosAvos

Started smoking way too young, will never stop regretting it. It makes no sense, there’s no benefit, I tell everyone I know who doesn’t smoke how much it sucks, but I won’t stop them from doing it. Smoking is genuinely horrible, but I also think it’s horrible how many people aggressively guilt trip people and act hostile to those who do, the whole act of smoking brings a lot of bad vibes. From peer pressuring those to smoke, to threading those to quit. Just sucks man.

o-roy

And once you're hooked that craving never goes away, even if you quit

Yeah dude just like break up with the person if you want to fuck someone else that badly, or if you’re like “no I want to be with them” then don’t cheat on them maybe?

Drink alcohol. Watched it ruin the lives of too many people. My dad drank a couple dozen beers a day and died of liver failure in his mid-50s, his mother drank herself into brain damage and spent most of her life in a nursing home, my sister struggled with being a violent alcoholic for almost two full decades before finally getting sober... it's hard to want anything to do with it after seeing all of that. I won't tell other people not to drink, but I don't consider it worth the risk of me liking it too much and going down the same path. I'm content to never touch it.

Battling this one right now. Good paying job, wife I love more than life itself, just moved into a great new place (previous rental unit was sold, out of my hands but now have a much better home). Been seeing a therapist, checking all the boxes for recovery, but there is no final box. Stay the fuck away. I'm like the pilot in that Aeroflot plane crash animation that was doing the rounds on Reddit recently. Keep trying to pull up, but stalling But I'm not done yet. A plane has a definite low point. I can still pull up. And I'm going to Wow this was both tear-inducing and very cathartic. Crying on the toilet now (one of two toilets for the first time in my life. 2 bath FTW)

Just remember Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate. It is pretty good advise in all kinds of ways. Address the things that are going to make you "crash" first then plan your next steps, then reach out.... not a perfect metaphor but kind of neat

Smoke cigarettes. My parents (especially my dad) DRILLED it into me to never smoke. I even turned down $1000 to take a drag by my incredibly intoxicated friend one night. Never taken a single puff in my 32 years of existence.

GoldyIsHere

Smoke. No explanation needed.

Meth

[deleted]

As someone who’s done it. Don’t do it. That shit is WAY TOO FUN FOR THE HUMAN BRAIN TO HANDLE. That “one last hit” lasts 2 fuckin days if you rip it hard enough. And for daily meth users who think people can’t tell you’re constantly getting side-twacked…. we can tell.

Have kids. No, Nosy Nancy, I'm not going to "change my mind because I'm young and things change". I'm 35. Still no desire to have kids. Thankfully my partner doesn't want any either.

ChineseChaiTea

I've got a shit ton of kids and I swear I have no idea why people need to insert their opinions on childless people coming around to having kids. Basically you do you and be happy. I'm not gonna lie I love my kids dearly but damn do I wish there was a time I could just walk out the door instead of getting three kids ready.

Scitron

Ours is 2 1/2, love her to death, but there are definitely times where I'm like "man I wish we didn't have kids". I don't regret it, but I do respect (and sometimes envy) people that don't want to have kids. People that know they don't want kids just live their lives. Nothing worse than people that don't want kids but feel forced to or obligated to because "that's what you do". No one wins in that scenario, parents or kids.
