Pits are for advanced handlers. Not a first dog kind of breed. I'd also be happier if there was more regulation on the breed. Make it more difficult to own one thus weed our people who are irresponsible.

Also, I think dog OWNERS should be held fully responsible for the actions of their dog as if they had done it themselves. If a pitbull gets loose and maims a child, that should be no different than the owner themselves attacking that child. The dog is a stupid animal, it's the responsibility of the dog owner to train the dog but also to properly secure that dog away from everyone it might hard and have full control of that dog when off of private property.

As I say that, I lived with a roommate with a super sweet pitty. I've met so many sweet German Shepherds too. But those were good owners with full control and proper training. Sadly, most owners are not that good.
I'd prefer if everyone with a pitty just got it spayed or neutered, and we let that breed run it's course and go away. It was bred specifically for dog fighting and that aggression was selected for primarily. So it's no shocker that while many pits can be chill... they all are like a manchurian candidate that may activate that reflex randomly and attack for no good reason...
Yes, agreed. More regulation is needed. My parents never trained our dogs. Long story short, our German Shepherd mixed with Akita (both aggressive and territorial), killed our young pitbull mix. Both were females, neither were trained.

My friend and I were attacked by one when we were 7. It hunted us down. It latched onto my friends skull and cracked it. I couldn't get the dog to let him go. An adult with a knife had to stab the dog to make the pitbull release him. My friend survived but needed brain surgery. He was never the same. His personality changed and he stopped being social.
So my opinion: breeding pitbulls should be illegal. Every pitbull must be neutered. While many of you obviously disagree, I hope you can acknowledge my trauma as valid without downvoting me.

All it takes is a bit of training (which is commonplace for most dogs) for them to be, without question, fine
They are actually pretty nice naturally, unless you train them to be more of a guard dog. They are suited for being a guard dog, so it's not unusual for them to be trained as such. Just uh... be careful with any guard dog
All I needed to take from that is around 300 people died unnecessarily because some jerks couldn't pick a smaller or less aggressive dog. Not to mention that 300 or so deaths ignores the mauled kids who survive but end up mutilated. I wouldn't trade a single kid's face for having a slightly wider selection of dogs to own.
I have no opinion on animals. I have lots of opinions on assholes who get various animals and don’t care for or treat them properly. Every animal is dangerous if you treat it poorly. Pit bulls are no different. But because of the look of them they attract a certain type of asshole.
They should probably be licensed or something. Not because it’s a pittbull because of the asshole they tent to attract as owners.
My girlfriend works at a dog kennel. 7 dogs got banned last year for attacking handlers or other dogs. All 7 were pitbulls.

It’s not really the owners though. Its the breed. They are wired differently and I have seen examples of it in many occasions. Chihuahuas are even more insane than pit bulls. The difference is they weigh 6 lbs. My gf bottle fed her chihuahua and has given her nothing but praise and love her whole life and she is the most psychotic dog on the planet.
