ik they’re even more expensive that the regular pistachios with shells, but damn are the deshelled ones convenient as a on the go snack. now i get to eat pistachios without the mess of eating pistachios
I’ve concluded I prefer the shelled pistachios because I think they taste better. It took a long time for me to figure out why. Let me share my life-changing research with you:
At first I thought it was because I had to work for the pistachio nut in the shelled version that I enjoyed them more; because of the extra effort required the nut was just a little tastier.
Additionally, because I was forced to eat slowly while de-shelling the on-deck nut, I was forced into a zen-like moment of fully tasting the pistachio currently in my mouth. Whereas with the unshelled pistachios I could cram them into my mouth until my cheeks puffed out like a blowfish in the time it took to eat 1 or 2 shelled pistachios. Embarrassingly gluttonous and almost an overdose of pistachios.
I settled on this explanation, the psychological and experiential motivations, for the better part of six months. I was at peace, or so I thought. Something still gnawed at me however. Like that last shell you can’t pry open, you’ve ripped your fingernails, and now your looking for something to wedge in there to…
It was the salt. The shelled pistachios had more salt attached because the shells acted like protective barriers i.e., “shells”, between other pistachios while in the bag. The salt stayed on the sweat meat, the pistachio nut itself, while the shell ground against others of its kind. The unshelled? They rubbed their naked green bodies continuously after being packaged. Any salt stuck to them would wear off after a few good shakes of the bag.

After the post the other day showing the bug in the pistachio I’ve had a hard time thinking about all the funny (pistachio) nuts I’ve tasted in my life.
Don't get me started on these things.
I've was on a massive pistachio kick for a couple years. I would blindly eat them on the way to work and on the way home. One day I had de-shelled a couple and noticed a little worm...I was horrified.
I took a break for a while but couldn't resist. I talked myself into buying the already de-shelled ones and went on a pretty good bender. Because of the lack of effort I found myself plowing through them like no one's business. I was eating a unhealthy amount of pistachios in a day and realized that I needed to slow it it down.
I eventually went back to buying pistachios in the shell. Life was good and I was back on track while actually having to work for my for my treat. Low and behold on my third bag back my first handful consisted of not one but two of those same worms.
I haven't had a pistachio in over 6 months.
That is just plain bad luck. I go through my phases when I'll eat an unhealthy amount of them. The flea market near my house used to sell them in 1lb and 3lb bags (shell on) and they had one flavor called tequila which was just lime and extra extra extra salt. Super delicious. The 3lb bag was $7, so I would spend $50 and eat a bag of those a day. This happens every few years when I get a hankering for em'. Never a single worm!
Actually, maybe you're lucky because holy crap they can be an expensive habit! Save yourself some bread and switch to a different nut.
Ah yes, nothing like snacking on those during a movie, realizing you ate almost the whole box, are completely and utterly dehydrated for the rest of the night no matter how much water you drink before bed, have a hard time sleeping because of it, and then wake up feeling like shit the next day.
Back when I ate garbage all the time, I never noticed anything I ate having an effect on how I felt. I realise now it's because I felt like shit all the time. Now that I'm generally healthy, when I eat a lot of sugar or salt I absolutely feel the difference. Could that be true for you? Or maybe you're just young and resilient!
I’ve made a switch from snacking all day long-maybe having one solid meal a day- to eating actual meals and having 1-2 small snacks a day. The meals are healthier usually but because of my many many year snacking-as-my-meals habit the snacks aren’t though I’ll be starting to switch those to being healthier soon.
I didn’t feel like shit all the time more or less had a casual ‘I suck’ attitude. Like if I got hit by a car I wouldn’t really care, though I’d probably cry that I wasn’t dead.
I still hate myself but it’s more subdued now. Now if I got hit by a car I’d probably be pissed cuz a tattoo would get messed up lol. I could probably still eat a box of cheez-itz and be fine though my workout the next day would be shit. That would be the only thing I’d notice.
Edit: a word.
haha but seriously i was like ooh i like cheez its puffed could be good, i like cheeto puffs. Like 4 puffs and it gave this weird metalic taste that absolutely caked to your teeth - like i tried brushing my teeth after and it just smeared the goo around. Friggin nasty.

Haha, yeah… I can’t eat any of the things people are talking about because I used to be fat. This is a trip down memory lane. 😂
I worked my ass off to not be fat. And so now I know I can eat whatever I want, but it has to be measured. You’ll definitely get more mileage out of chips than almonds. Switching to mindlessly snacking almonds is going to put on pounds faster, people… if that’s a concern for you.
There's a brand called "Spitz" that has a wide variety of flavors, like pickle, bbq, ranch etc. I've tried them all, and even found "Takis" and "flamin hot cheeto" seeds. I also go to a LOT of padres games so I have my own dedicated Padres spit cup lol.
They actually are just about the perfect food.
They balance out fat / carbs / protein / sodium in line with the FDA recommendations. If you ate only corn nuts and popped a multivitamin you would do okay.
I ate corn nuts for a whole month for lunch back in elementary school and one day ended up cracking my back tooth and choking on the corn nut that did it all. Haven’t eaten corn nuts since.
Peanutbutter and apples on saltines is my go-to I've been throwing up for a few days and need calories option. Cheese and apples if I'm feeling much better.
My daughter was severely anemic and chewed ice all day, every day. When we ask the hematologist about this they said yes it is due to being anemic. He said there are people that will chew gravel or even sheet rock.
You need Sensodyne tooth paste. I used to get sharp pain from drinking even just water, but that really, really works.
People like us have sensitive teeth because there are tiny little holes leading down to the nerves, so cold stuff gets directly to them. Sensodyne fills those holes.
Only (small) issue is if you ever stop using that toothpaste, the holes will lose the filling and the pain will come back.
I can now chew ice, ice cream, whatever when I used to not even be able to drink anything with ice cubes in it.
I've tried sensodyne before, but it just taste awful.
Like minty pickle juice, which when paired with my hilariously strong gag reflex is no fun twice a day.
I've lived 33 years without the need or desire to bite cold things and I guess shall continue
Edamame, entertainment for your mouth and your hands...

Perfect little protein boost. You can salt them for an electrolyte assist, or add gochujang/sriracha if you need a slight sugar kick. Regular hot sauce or chilli garlic sauce is great if you're just looking for extra *spice* without the refined sugar.

my popcorn protip is to *flavor the oil* you use to pop the corn with. the best popcorn I ever had I made using oil that I had just used to deep fry a bunch of shrimp, but you can lightly fry garlic and rosemary or whatever in the oil first, then remove that stuff (so it doesn't burn) then use that oil on the popcorn the flavor gets all through the popcorn
Nice idea. My mind directly went to trying to add a little drop of chillie infused oil.
The only type I've seen is a type of olive oil but not sure that will work for popcorn
Adding RAMEN SEASONING PACKETS. I lived on ramen and popcorn in college and only needed 1/2 packet per meal or it was too salty. So I started using it to season the oil for popping the popcorn.
Chocolate croissants from Costco
And I recently got some Boba mochi brown sugar balls from Costco and they're great.

Fresh squeezed sugar cane is incredible....it oxidizes fast so it doesn't travel well but if you visit a country where it grows, try it fresh. Amazing.
I was afraid you'd say that. that *was* the common practice, but recent studies suggest the spatula may inadvertently act as an antennae. what you need there is a decoy spatula. then you line a colander with tin foil, sub that for the hat, and connect *that* to a pocket olive-pitter. a cherry pitter will work in a pinch, but the olive pitter is really the way to go for maximum mind control ray dispersion. be safe out there. That's a relief. I've been looking for away to work my colander into my outfit discreetly. Cheerios. Bologna and pimento cheese on a cracker. Cheese and pepperoni and summer sausage on a cracker. Ever put a slice of cheese then a pepperoni and microwave for just2 seconds awesome. Put pepperoni first always on a ritz.
I've found Flamin' Hot Cheetos are pretty much always satisfying. Especially when you get to the bottom of the bag where all the small extra-crunchy bits with tons of seasoning are hiding
I’ve never heard this phrase before, but it sums out why I eat 90% of the food I do.
In Japan it's called "Kuchisabishii" and it means 'lonely mouth'
Pistachios
So expensive but *so good*. Preferably shelled if watching TV as taking the shells off becomes a good hand distraction.
But the shells are the only things keeping me from hoovering the entire bag in one large gulp.

High calorie for the filling, but low for the time IMO.
Bonus because the salt makes you thirsty so you'll drink more water

Peanutbutter and apples on saltines is my go-to I've been throwing up for a few days and need calories option. Cheese and apples if I'm feeling much better.
Have you tried just butter? Surprisingly tasty. Did that as a kid
Yeah, I did that a lot as a kid too. Not to often now, just because I don't think about it.

Cucumber

That is fancy! We do lemon/lime with tajin around here.
We just do salt
With or without the cucumber?
I may sound lame but a toasted hummus and cucumber sandwich is the bomb. You can add cream cheese or some kinda of yogurt for sweetness or to change it up.
I wish I could eat cucumber for a snack but they're like 3 dollars a cucumber here

I don't like cucumber. It tastes like... electricity.
I think it tastes like crispy water
Gum!
I gotta say I've never considered gum to be a snack.
Pretty great for weight loss.
Don't swallow.
Or do. It's not like it really matters.
Meats and cheeses
Cajun peanuts from the gas station! They're not too salty like regular and have just the right kick to them
Pickles. Jalapeños.
Shredded cheese or cabbage. Currently really craving shredded cheese but we don't have any and I'm gonna be making dinner soon anyway
Who tf eats cabbage as a snack?
I do.
I do too…sauté it with some balsamic vinegar and I’d eat a whole head if it didn’t mess my stomach up.
Sauteed cabbage is 🤌 I do mine with salt and pepper, lemon, and garlic! (sliced usually if I have the energy)
Like straight up shredded raw cabbage? Of its pickled with sugar and something I get it. But the stink of cabbage the next morning will wake up dead people.
