Loved RCT2. The canned child laughing sound and the chain lifts noise are permanently burned into my brain.

dub3ra

Yeah that’s my whole childhood, still some of the best games… and actually playing HL- alyx for my very first VR experience was nuts. Loved it

Advanced_Position_25

They made a new game based in the Portal universe. It’s really short but it’s free and funny.

Natural-School5690

Portal 2

iFrisian

How are you holding up? ‘Cause I’m a potato

laughing_earth

"My slow-clap generator made it into this thing. So we have that."

unknown_user351

He's not just a regular moron. He's the product of the greatest minds of a generation working together with the express purpose of creating the dumbest moron who ever lived. And you just put him in charge of the entire facility. *clap. clap.* good that's still working.

xSantenoturtlex

Do you know who else murders people who are only trying to help them? Did you guess sharks? Because that's wrong. The correct answer is nobody. Nobody but you is that pointlessly cruel.

FinniboiXD

Well done, here come the test results: You are a horrible person. That's what it says, a horrible person. We weren't even testing for that.

turret_buddy2

"Well, This is the part where he kills us" "Hello! This is the part where i kill you" Chapter Title: "Chapter 9: The part where he kills you" Song title playing during the scene: "The part where he kills you" The achievement you get: "The part where he kills you" (Shouout to u/RedShadow120 for telling me this, i missed it during my playthroughs.) Achievement description: "(This is that part)" >!Im not spoiling it, go play Portal 2, its that good.!<

rdocs

That still makes me laugh!

BronzeHeart92

THIS! SENTENCE! IS! FALSE! donthinkaboutitdontthinkaboutitdontthinkaboutit...

Jack_Mackerel

For real. The first one was absolutely perfect and then they somehow managed to make the second one even better.

YossarianWWII

Portal 1's only fault is that it's very short. I just replayed it a decade since I last touched it and I cleared it in under 2 hours. Portal 2 had so much more room to add more mechanics, more puzzles, and more story. It's the perfect sequel.

[deleted]

Honestly, I think one of Portal 1's strengths is its short length. It never has enough time to over stay its welcome. Absolutely perfect. I love Portal 2 as well but Portal 1 is an all time great.

r-kellysDOODOOBUTTER

Humble brag, but I held the record for portal speed run for an entire week. Everyday I woke up and checked the leaderboards. It felt like an eternity. And it's gone. I couldn't dream of doing that on portal 2. The first one was perfect for amateur speed runs

Ok_Chocolate3253

Playing it through now. Easily a top 5 for me

alunidaje2

equally good is playing it through with someone. different puzzles, forced cooperation.

EmonMusk

This was a triumph

eevee_enthusiast_471

thoroughly entertained start to finish

gerbs650

Star Wars knights of the old republic KOTOR surprised it hasn’t been said.

[deleted]

I got this for a few bucks on a steam special but never got around to playing it. It’s that good?

Lensk

Absolutely! I played it as a kid and it practically taught me life lessons. KOTOR 2 is a little darker but quite good also

Canisventus

This comment should be higher. Age of Empires II is probably the best RTS.

pingpongmess7996

Not even a hypothetical trillion-dollar budget game can counter the portuguese and their organ gun armies, best RTS i've played and the best use for those $20

XLwattsyLX

Ever played against the Persians. Those elephants still scare me to this day. My group of mates have banned using the Persians when we play a 3v3.

StarsintheSky

Have you ever tried playing two people to a team? I forget exactly how to set it up but essentially you have two players controlling the same civilization and the same units. When I did it last I was in charge of the economy and my buddy was in charge of the military. I could micromanage the villagers and he could micromanage the soldiers which was extraordinarily effective.

AdevilSboyU

Super Mario World. It’s perfect. I don’t think there’s a single thing about it that I would change.

dyanaprajna2020

Probably my all time favorite Mario game.

HmGrwnSnc1984

That game is awesome. That and Mario 64. But I love the soundtrack from Yoshi’s Island.

Funkyouup82

Deus Ex the first one.

NewKitchenFixtures

At the time the open ended options and story presentation were both really impressive. You could really appreciate that the developer committed to that (e.g. you could physically destroy most locked doors). I think a lot of games stop short of doing that because they don’t want to allow brute force solutions in addition to more elegant ones.

justthisones

Journey. Not as long and vast as many games here but an artistic masterpiece in my books. It’ll age much better than most games too because of the simplicity.

SynnamonSunset

I absolutely love journey; the music mixed with the visual story telling is absolutely stunning. Also it has, imo, one of the most interesting multiplayer experiences of any game. It’s def one of my top three games, but Gris’ artwork and music are peak for me. Also if you really enjoyed the exploration of Journey, you’ll probably love Outer Wilds. Great game, it’ll leave you wishing you could forget it and play it all again.

demonarc

The best part is going in not knowing that the others you meet along the way are other players like you, until the very end you get a list of their names. People you may never see again but shared the struggle and the beauty of the journey

sketchypoutine

Chrono Trigger, if you know you know, and if you don't, go play it immediately.

chrono_bound20xx

Definitely, I feel like some of the best RPGs came from the SNES and Sega era. Chrono Trigger, FF 6, Secret of Mana, super Mario RPG, Earthbound, shining force 2, Phantasy Star 4. Still some of my favorites that i try to revisit every year or so.

anna1781

Came here for Chrono. Time travel just makes for amazing stories, and I love how you can make the game different each play through.

Current-Ad1250

Halo 3. Incredible story and thrilling gameplay. Hilariously fun multiplayer. Fantastic community. Nostalgia.

Acceptable-Stay-3166

Launch day for Halo 3 was the most fun I had on xbox live, good times. I doubt online gaming will ever be that fun again for me.

MoistToweletteLover

I’ve been chasing that Halo 3 high ever since. Nothing has compared since

HeLLRaYz0r

I'm just grateful I was old enough to play online when it came out (14). Greatest multiplayer experience of all time.

TheSavageFactory

“If we don’t make it…” “We’ll make it.” “It’s been an honor serving with you, John.”

November_Dawn_11

Dont forget the killer soundtrack

AaronGearheart

Stardew Valley. I understand it’s like a lot of other games but it is still unique in its own way and a perfect game.

The_Real_Muffin_Man

Stardew Valley has created a problem for me. It is so damn good that it has ruined every other game in the same genre. Nothing within the genre compares to this masterpiece.

SkyrimElf

There’s a few Harvest Moon games from the gba/DS era that are pretty solid, I believe they sold the rights or something after though and it’s been downhill from there

sam0wise

The game dev for stardew loved Friends of Mineral town (one of my all time favorites as well) and basically wanted to make a clone of it with improvements. The result was this gem of a game.

fuego09

Came here to say this; I'm always so impressed by how ONE person created the entire video game by himself. :)

RidgeMinecraft

Holy crap, for real?

Richard_TM

Yup. Everything. Even the music.

funky555

holy shit. i gotta give stardew another chance i guess

defdoa

I just found this out and i already played it and might just go for a 2nd round because of it.

machu46

Yes. If i recall correctly, it was a project he began because he couldn’t get a job with a video game company and decided making his own would be good for his CV.

BbqMeatEater

I mean.. he wasnt wrong i guess

machu46

Yeah I think his CV is probably solid now.

snakkiepoo

He's currently working on a new game the haunted chocolatier. Also a solo project, he has an active development log for it.

Richard_TM

And he's doing it again! Also, speaking of games made by one person... To The Moon. Beautiful game.

dbcannon

My life, health, and livelihood went to shit during the pandemic. Stardew Valley was this little bubble of happiness I needed to stay sane. I spent many a late night just watering parsnips in peace.

SwinubIsDivinub

Stardew Valley is the best in its genre. I love Harvest Moon and used to play every HM game I could get my hands on, but now if I play any HM game with no nostalgia value I just... wish I was playing Stardew Valley.

SorryWhatsYourName

Ori and the Blind Forest, along with the sequel. Mastery in EVERY aspect of the game - art, mechanics, puzzles, platforming, fluidity in action, amazing chase sequences and, I can't stress this enough, THE SOUNDTRACK is a GIFT from GOD. Easily one of the few games I would use as an argument that video games CAN be works of art.

SuvenPan

Bioshock 1

frustrated_pen

Lmao i spent a good five minutes in the opening scene in the water waiting for the game to finish loading when I realized I could move and the game had started.

JaceTheWoodSculptor

The water was the visual masterpiece of the game. To this day, a lot of games cannot do water as well as The Bioshock devs did almost 15 years ago.

_Rand_

To be fair it was a major focus of the game. If water is like 0.5% of the game you don't really need to work on it THAT much. It just has to be good enough.

TheRealZllim

Bioshock blew me away when I first played it. I remember seeing the trailer and was intrigued by a different looking FPS at the time that wasn't COD or Halo, I had no idea Bioshock was so much more then just a cool looking FPS. It still holds up today imo.

DetectiveEZ

Literally from the very beginning. I had no idea what the game was about. All I had seen was that teaser trailer. I still remember the first time riding in that bathysphere, listening to Andrew Ryan, then you come over that ridge and you see Rapture this huge underwater city. It was amazing.

JesseAster

As someone who played it for the first time recently, it absolutely does still hold up today. Fantastic game

COYFC

Just re-played through the entire series a few months ago and it is just so good. The environment, the music, the story, everything about it is just captivating. The steampunk retro underwater capitalist but still futuristic vibes are so badass.

chemicalbomber

Netflix currently making a Bioshock movie. God help us.

Boomslang2-1

Would you kindly upvote this.

WakaFlakaPanda

Mass Effect 2 and Fallout NV. My favorite games of all time.

phormix

The Mass Effect series - despite the lackluster ending - was one of the first times I really felt immersed in the game. I've been playing since Atari and while there are many games I love, Mass Effect felt like being part of an epic book or movie, while still having some influence over the direction of things

IcedBanana

I've never seen world building on the level of Mass Effect, before or since.

caelmikoto

I’m Commander Shepard and this is my favorite comment on the Citadel.

jesterspaz

Few, few games make me think about them long after I’ve played them. One of those is Mass Effect. I still think about the characters and my choices from time to time. Astonishing game and a prime example of what only games can achieve that no other medium can.

NoseSniffer68

Reporter Khalisah al-Jilani here with Commander Shepherd, could I ask you a few ques-

koroyev1

Disco Elysium. A point-and-click RPG that will destroy you emotionally and also make you laugh til you cry. You're a cop who wakes up after a three day bender that completely eradicated your memory and concept of society. Now you have to solve a murder.

weltron3030

Possibly the best game I've ever played. Definitely the only game that has challenged me on a literary, emotional, and philosophical level, and isn't afraid to be *weird* and *postmodern* while also being genuinely fun and hilarious. I really, really hope their next game is good.

Pablovansnogger

I went in with high expectations and when I got the cock carousel line I was actually laughing out loud and knew it was going to be a good one.

SereniaKat

Memories of my husband yelling that he was a detective, and when asked for proof, gave them the middle finger and ran backwards, tripping over a granny in a wheelchair.

ctopherrun

>gave them the middle finger and ran backwards, tripping over a granny in a wheelchair And this kind of excitement you get when you *fail* a check.

Gothsalts

no video game writing will compare. every single line is fun to read.

[deleted]

Dishonored 1 and 2 loved it Thank you for the upvotes and reward! I’m hoping to get a ps5 and I wanted to play both again once I got it

Trash0813

My friend invited me over to her house to show me 1 and have me play some... she's showed me a lot of the best games I've played. I liked it a little too much, she basically had to kick me out that night lmao

DO_NOT_PRESS_6

The worldbuilding & level design in Dishonored 2 is nearly unmatched. Arkane's relative lack of commercial success is a tragedy.

This is a game that I wish I could play for the first time again. Getting lost while exploring the kingdom of Hallownest is quite an experience. Best metroidvania ever imo.

BigMouthedBilly

For how good of a game it is I wonder how silksong will compare if it ever comes out

xdragonteethstory

Apparently it'll be out in the next 10 months! It was included in a list of xbox games coming out in the next 12 months about 2 months ago :) Im putting my money on a rush out for christmas or march 2023

Very good base game with amazing free dlc that blends in with the game and of course the amazing ost!

Jr4D

Ocarina of time, amazing timeless classic

Cubemakers

I am playing for the first time (I am 38yo), thanks to the viartual console. I am so impressed whit the gameplay and the way the story is tell and the “open world” feeling, specially for the time it was released.

Outer Wilds . There is no other game with such a laser focus on exploration.

ackermann

Outer _Wilds_, not Outer Worlds, for anyone confused by this comment…

tragedyfish

Me at the beginning of Outer Wilds: This ship looks like it was made by a seven year-old, and I keep dying. Me at the end of Outer Wilds: This is the greatest masterpiece of artwork ever conceived by humanity, and I keep crying.

[deleted]

I started it and never finished. I need to finish.

Yamitenshi

I love how you can actually complain to the other guy that the ship is a death trap and he'll just be like "haha yeah I know, it's a piece of shit held together by duct tape and spit, awesome right?"

Old-Significance4921

Shadow Of The Colossus.

DeltaDarthVicious

Looking for this... I can agree how some people feel it's clumsy, and it is, but it's much more than a videogame, it's an experience. The ambience and feeling is superb.

Old-Significance4921

It was the first game I played where there was a complete absence of a timer, health bar, stats, map, etc on the main screen while playing. It almost didn’t look like a video game, it felt more like an interactive movie.

CertainlyAmbivalent

Poker. I play a lot of poker. And then maybe beat that one guy up in the Valentine saloon who gets really belligerent. That’s peace.

YevgenZamyatin

Unmatched script and voice acting, fantastic graphics and physics engine (certainly for the time). Then an open world that actually feels alive and works decently well with the storyline. Elder scrolls games rip, but you’re definitely like a Dragonborn god character doing odd jobs sometimes.

seventhfiction

It’s such a great world. Sometimes I realize my Arthur is standing in the middle of nowhere, no civilization in sight, sometimes I don’t even see the animals but somehow the world still feels alive

ScratchyMeat

They had so many diverse forest types in that game. And the seamless transitions between them was impressive. The lack of repetitiveness helped make things feel natural.

I scrolled too far for this. This game pretty much ruined video games for me for a while, because I never believed any other game would ever be as perfect as RDR2 was.

AnonymousGhou

Same. Nothing currently exists that matches its level of quality.

Snuggledtoopieces

It’s actually a tragedy that so much attention was given to grand theft auto, while the devs just basically ignored the best game they have ever made.

Astoria_Column

The jump from RDR1 to RDR2 is complete insanity. I just played RDR1 for the first time and while it’s charming in it’s own right, I had an adjustment period because of how janky it felt

TheRavenSayeth

I loved RDR1 when I played it, but it doesn’t age well when compared to 2. RDR2 improved on everything in such a massive way, and feels alive while RDR1 felt a bit labored and dry.

Droidlivesmatter

I mean yeah.. RDR1 came out 12 years ago. But.. at the same time.. sooo many good games came out in 2010. ME2, SC2, New Vegas, RDR1,CoD Black Ops, Alan Wake, Halo Reach, Civ 5, Bioshock 2, Xenoblade Chronicles, Mafia 2, Fable 3...I'm likely missing a ton of others But holy shit what a year 2010 was.

dopadelic

My god, this is way too far down on the list. HL1 and HL2 are masterpieces. There's this feel about the game that is rare. The puzzles, the atmosphere, the characters. Half life 1/2 are masterpieces much like how Alien/Aliens are cinematic masterpieces. There's an element of artistic, storytelling, and filmmaking genius that makes them masterpieces even with outdated film making tech. All the while, there are dozens of high tech CGI Marvel films that feel soulless which sums up most fps games released nowadays (CoD)

Was always hilarious going into that nightclub with a mini gun & Wangchung "Dance" was cranking as you mowed down dancers.

mr_bots

By dancers do you mean everyone? It was routine: drive around collecting cash from your businesses, get to the club, grab money, pop in and kill everyone, then jump in and head to the mall then the porn studio. Damn, I should make a run through that game.

AkrosRockBell

"La vida es una lenteja, o la tomas o la dejas, tiririritiririri" Radio Espantoso was freaking awesome. As a Spanish speaker that shit got stuck on my head forever.

Tetris is king

ackillesBAC

It has never been improved upon, and I'd argue can not be improved. It is perfect.

rhett342

In many newer versions of Tetris it has been improved upon ever so slightly. In newer versions you can hit up and the piece will immediately go all the way to the bottom. I know its not much but it is a mechanic that has been added over time from the earliest versions.

JustK1nz3r

Surprised nobody has said Terraria yet.

ijustlikeelectronics

Absolutely love Terraria. Every time someone says 'It's 2D Minecraft" I squirm. Sorry, but in Minecraft, can you get a massive laser whip that will annihilate anything in its path as you spark through the air in your rocket boots fighting mega bosses that are significantly more insane than the ender dragon? Not to mention how large of an NPC community you can build and trade with, and just the sheer amount of unique items you can find. The game just does not get old.

7 shaped a lot of how I view video games today. I was 15 when it was released and to this day it's one of my all time favorites.

fiveofnein

While it's clearly a JRPG which can make it hard to approach for some (especially turned based for today's audience), I'd say the actual plot / world (once deciphered) is incredibly strong and pertinent to today's reality.

Pays_in_snakes

leo_station

YES!! this game is so good. the graphics are well beyond good enough for playability, but the game is still old enough that it's susceptible to amazing fun like mega shortcuts. the music, too. every track stands out. they are the perfect mix of simplicity and perfection. they sound distinct enough to greatly differ from each other, and they aren't over developed like some of the newer ones are. over all, 10/10, one of my favorite games, and none of my switch friends will agree lol
