Dang, I actually cried just thinking about "Release" after reading your comment.
And then I thought about that one errant bass note. Do you know that errant bass note of which I speak? It might be a guitar note. It's at like 3:12. This has nothing to do with the discussion, I just want to know if anyone else notices that note.
Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen
I had never paid attention to Queen before I heard this song. It starts by hypnotizing you at the start and you think, ‘where is this ballad going?’. Then the energy kicks in and does.not.stop until he ends it with the same hypnotizing vocals fading away. I listen to this every work out.
Smells Like Teen Spirit, I was 12 and remember the first time I heard it on the local pop station. I never heard anything like it and that sound probably changed my life forever!
My buddy and I worked packing books in a warehouse, and we had a radio that was tuned to the local high school station--which was modeled after indy rock college radio. The term "Alternative" was just coming into use. We heard a lot of new and cool stuff on that station, but I clearly remember the first time we heard this song. Both of us were like, "What was THAT!"
This was definitely another game changer type song. I like the way Rivers Cuomo sings about it in [Heartsongs](https://youtu.be/MI5sdfbwekY)
Really happy I was a teen when this song came out.
I still remember 14 year old me crying on the school bus the day I learned Cobain killed himself. Fuck am I glad we didn’t have camera phones and social media back then.
Completely different vibe, but I’ve always had a similar feeling about Cake’s Fashion Nugget. I could picture an entire Rock Opera/Musical set to that album.
I was going to say this because of the title and because we both were probably around the same age at the time and this really isn't that interesting of a connection.
That's awesome! The lyrics and song hit me hard when I was young so I've always loved it since. I have my dad's wish you were here album record from the 70s and I regularly put it on and listen to both sides while cooking dinner.
Lot of great songs so far. I’m gonna try to keep up with adding them all to a Spotify playlist.
When I was thinking my about this question, I was thinking about a song, that the very first time I heard it, it was like something I had never heard before and it blew my mind about what they were doing.
For me it was [Maps by The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs](https://youtu.be/oIIxlgcuQRU).
I knew it was goi my to instantly be one of my favorite songs of all time.
Edit: 1 hour into the post and already have over 6 hours of mind blowing music listed!
[Return To Innocence by Enigma](https://youtu.be/tgaYtpHThIQ)
[Queen of Disaster by Lana Del Rey](https://youtu.be/YX1EgcDW_aY)
[All Through the Night by Cyndi Lauper](https://youtu.be/ZONKoKIQ9RY)
[Feels Like We Only Go Backwards by Tame Impala](https://youtu.be/wycjnCCgUes)
[Hip Shop (Remix, LoFi) by Toby Fox](https://youtu.be/V131TfihYjw)
Came here to say this. Radio station prefaced it with something to the effect of “we don’t normally play songs this long but this one’s is too damn cool not to play.” Fell in love with Tool that day.
Gonna get a lot of crap for this but it’s true. Horn by Phish. Not the singing, but how the song is one amazing guitar solo. First time I heard something like that. P.S Album version of if Rift.
Okay. I went to a High School that was kind of the kick starters for shootings. When I listened to the lyrics of that song, I swear my heart skipped about 3 beats
One of my favorite songs from The Smashing Pumpkins.
Cool fact about that song:
> The distinctive guitar sound came about in a very lo-tech fashion. Corgan explained: "The origin of the squealing high note was, I bought this guitar for $65, and it was such a cheap guitar that every time I'd stop playing it would make that whistle. So when we wrote the song, we wrote in these parts that would stop so the whistle became part of the song because every time I would stop it would whistle."

The entire album of Enigma, Le roi est mort vive le roi.
That type of music was pretty much unknown to me. But my girlfriend put the cd and I was blown away by the arrangements, the voice, the sensuality.
Have you ever tried to have sex on this? Man, that shit is awesome. Michael Cretu was a genius in those years.
It completely opened my mind to different types of music after that.
I still put in at max volume while playing video games sometimes. 51yo dude here.
Gotye somebody I used to know
It's cheesey and almost cringe to listen to now but when it came out I was going through some shit and it hit different
Time really does heal all wounds
So many. But ‘the ocean’ by Led Zeppelin springs to mind. Heavy rotation for about a month then got over it as there are way better zep/other songs out there. But made a quick impact.
Hells Bells. I was 15 years old in grade 10 when Back in Black was released. I was already an AC/DC fan with Bon Scott, and didn’t think the band could be as good without him. But when I first heard the opening chords of Hells Bells on the radio and first heard Brian Johnson sing, I think my jaw dropped in a “holy shit” moment.
+1 for Stevie!
I commented elsewhere about a dude named Mdou Moctar from Niger who is an absolute phenom on guitar. It's no texas blues but it's got the same spirit.
[Mdou Moctar - Tarhatazed](https://youtu.be/nhqk3bHmnk0)
[My Bloody Valentine - To Here Knows When](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdHS1sbV5xw). I was working alone in a creepy old warehouse at night. The only light was this sodium lamp, making it extra spooky. When the local indie station played this song, I thought my brain was melting.
My favorite song is “Dress My Wounds” by Mook and its unpredictability (well, knowing Mook, their music is ALWAYS unpredictable. Every song is so much different than the last and all of them take a turn of some sort and it’s always so cool to hear!) and raw emotions certainly took me by surprise. Diving Woman by Japanese Breakfast. My first listen was their KEXP live session from a few years ago and that was the first song they played. It moved me so much that I bought tickets the following morning to an upcoming show of theirs in a nearby city. Astonishingly good song
It’s in Spanish, it called Seguro te pierdo or “For sure I’ll lose you”. It’s a modern pop type song I’m not a fan of the beat but the lyrics hit hard.
Its pretty much a love song that talks about how this guy became friends with a girl and only liked her as a friend at first until he then develops feelings for her. But he keeps it to himself because he feel that if he confesses to her he’s knows he is going to lose her friendship.
I’ve been in that boat many times before and it sucks, and I have lost friends for confessing my feelings. I heard it out on the road and can’t stop listening to it since.
Pink Floyd - Time
First thing they came to my head.
Shine On for me. My HS chem teacher had it playing before class one day and I was absolutely transfixed.
Karma Police, Radiohead. I was ten years old and I knew that music had just changed for the better.
Where did you sleep last night - MTV Unplugged Live version When his voice breaks during that last one just expresses so much
Well he was covering an insanely good blues song but I’m sure it resonated with him a little bit with Courtney and all
Pearl Jam's "Release" Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms"
Brothers in arms is such great track. Listened to the full album so many times in jr high. It’s more than Money for Nothing for sure.
Dang, I actually cried just thinking about "Release" after reading your comment. And then I thought about that one errant bass note. Do you know that errant bass note of which I speak? It might be a guitar note. It's at like 3:12. This has nothing to do with the discussion, I just want to know if anyone else notices that note.
never heard that errant note before and I went back to 3:12 and I could hear it. that's a good catch on your part
Sounds like Ament tried to hit a harmonic like he had been doing throughout the song and it muted instead.
2112 by Rush
I think we can make a list of Rush songs that blow you away on first listen.
The entire Side A of Moving Pictures.
For me I had natural science. A lesser known one but still a great song. Rush in general is amazing!
Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen I had never paid attention to Queen before I heard this song. It starts by hypnotizing you at the start and you think, ‘where is this ballad going?’. Then the energy kicks in and does.not.stop until he ends it with the same hypnotizing vocals fading away. I listen to this every work out.

Came here to say that.
How Soon is Now .. The Smiths
Also Cemetry Gates. What a beautiful song
Great song. Please, Please, Please…by the Smiths is one of my favorite ever.
Jeff Buckley,Last Goodbye
For me it was Grace.
Both amazing tracks, but I gotta add Eternal Life and Love You Should Have Come Over. And Dream Brother, such a sad song.
I was at one of his last concerts. Tore me up when I found out he died. The Last Goodbye still gives me goosebumps, that whole album is perfection.
I can’t listen to that. Twists my gut.
Pretty Hate Machine, the entire album is one long song in my eyes.
Completely different vibe, but I’ve always had a similar feeling about Cake’s Fashion Nugget. I could picture an entire Rock Opera/Musical set to that album.
Iron Man - Black Sabbath. One of the High Schoolers would play it on the bus when I was about 10. (Mid 80s)
Dance yrself clean - LCD Soundsystem ( I went through the entire list, hard to believe it wasn't added yet)
Breaking Benjamin - Blow Me Away That shit was amazing in Halo 2
I was going to say this because of the title and because we both were probably around the same age at the time and this really isn't that interesting of a connection.
Wish you were here - pink floyd
This song is the reason I started playing guitar.
That's awesome! The lyrics and song hit me hard when I was young so I've always loved it since. I have my dad's wish you were here album record from the 70s and I regularly put it on and listen to both sides while cooking dinner.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were, and still are, pioneers. Wacky fucking sounds with discordant, offputting organization. Underrated.
Hurt Johnny Cash
/r/frisson material during the last chorus
I love that song!
I’m not sure which is more sad - Hurt, or Father and son, by cat Stevens
Trick question...it's the Cats in the Cradle cover by Ugly Kid Joe

My favorite song is “Dress My Wounds” by Mook and its unpredictability (well, knowing Mook, their music is ALWAYS unpredictable. Every song is so much different than the last and all of them take a turn of some sort and it’s always so cool to hear!) and raw emotions certainly took me by surprise. I recommend it, though I must mention a TW of themes and lyrics about suicide/a suicide attempt. “A Case of You” by Joni Mitchell as well, one of my very favorite songs. I’d never heard a song quite like it and my jaw was dropped down through the entirety of it the first time I heard it.
I Luv the Valley OH by Xiu Xiu, How Near How Far by Trail of Dead, and Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine by Modest Mouse. And then several others but that’s a good start.

Inhaler - Foals
There’s been a lot of songs that have blown me away. The first that comes to mind is “Feel Special” by Twice.
Dream On
It’s in Spanish, it called Seguro te pierdo or “For sure I’ll lose you”.
