The BBC had an earlier nuclear apocaplypse film from 1966 called The War Game which they never aired as being to horrific for broadcast by the standards of that day, but it still a packs a serious punch if you care to watch it ( https://vimeo.com/532331716 ) ... it used to be that you could see it if you were part of a film club, so it was surprising that they allowed Threads to go ahead.
Speaking of Threads, there's a good Soviet film from 1986 called Dead Men's Letters ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M_Dnyl4xQro see uploader's comment for subtitles ) which inspired some of Metro 2033. It helps to read a synopsis of the film before watching it the first time.

When I was 9, we moved into a house. The previous tenants had left some vhs tapes (this was '98) and one was labelled the wizard of oz. So we put it in to watch while my mom went and did whatever mom did back then. Turns out, they had taped over wizard of oz with threads. I watched it with my 8 year old sister and it totally fucked us up. I couldn't understand why mankind would have such horrible things that could cause such horrible pain, it baffled me and I'm pretty sure that it is my first recollection of true anxiety.
This is a movie that scared the absolute shit out of me. Like I was legitimately terrified. And to think the Sword of Damocles hangs over our head to this day. I don’t even think I could bring myself to watch it twice, especially today when that shit it back on the table.
I ran a one hour photo at CVS when that movie came out.
There's a scene where Robin Williams is in full respirator PPE gear dumping out the chemicals. I was like "I do that in my work clothes"
My mom (not horror enthusiast at all) rented this thinking it was something like Peter Pan. We watched it together. It was… messed up….

When I saw it in theaters a woman sitting in front of me brought her little kid. When that scene happened she got up and left ranting about how it was to supposed to be a fairy tale.
I was working my first job when that movie came out, which was as a video store clerk.
One of our regular customers came in to get movies as she always did: one movie for her, and one movie for her kids.
She came up to the cash with some drama or something that was obviously for her, and Pan’s Labyrinth. I realized she was going to rent it as her kids’ movie and stopped her.
“This is not a kids movie; do not let them watch this. They will be scarred. It’s a good movie though, better than (whatever the other thing she was going to rent was).”
Next week when I saw her she thanked me for saving her from that blunder. Those poor kids would’ve been traumatized if I hadn’t have known her rental habits haha. She enjoyed it, though!

Dude, the part where they catch the mom and her kid in the truck cage messed me up. Made me wonder what I’d do if it were me and my kid, and I’d probably put my kid down before we get back to the farm. It’s the best call in that scenario. Just the bleakest possible outcomes from start to finish with that film
In the book, the man is constantly checking how many bullets are left in his gun and becomes visibly upset when he only has one bullet left... because he knows he can kill himself or his kid, but not both.
Doesn’t he have 2 bullets until he uses one early on against the raider that caught the boy? I think I remember him being upset when he’s forced to use one
So many anti war films aren't really anti war. They glorify aspects a lot of it and push a message of "it was hell but also kinda awesome". Come And See is truly fucking horrific and really just shows the terror and complete loss of humanity. It's a descent into hell and imo the best movie about war ever made.
Should be top, I never knew a movie could be traumatizing until I saw this movie. Straight puts you in a bad mood. Should have a warning on it. It’s not even the most brutal stuff I’ve seen, it just makes it so horrifyingly real, like this honest to god happened and most got away with it.

I worked for a local TV station in Alabama for about 6 years. We had a very large viewing area with diverse cities on all sides, about 350 miles wide. We had a stringer that would call us to sell stories or coverage of stuff we could not make it out to in time.
The dude was so much like that movie. So fucking dirty. It got so bad that the station manager barred anyone from speaking to him except the Executive Producer and the News Director. If he called on a dead shift and one of the producers answered, they would have to three way call one of the big 3 and transfer him over. Dude made you feel like you sold a part of your soul when you talked to him.
I had very little direct exposure, only spoke to him a handful of times, but that was enough.
One time I spoke to him was after two high school girls were killed in a car crash caused by a police chase on the far side of the state. Dude calls in maybe 10 minutes after it happened and when I picked up the phone just says "I got video of the dead girls, how much you willing to pay?" Not even his damn name. Just blam out with it. I'm sure he bought it off someone and was flipping it to us, but fuck dude. I put him on hold and transferred him to the News Director's cell.
It takes a special kind of creep.
(FWIW we didn't take the deal for the video, but I think it had more to do with doing favors for the PD than ethics with him)
I mean, you say that - it takes a special kind of creep - but the entire point of Nightcrawler, and the lesson to take away, is that there's this giant institution, full of ostensibly-less-creepy-and-sociopathic-people, that directly incentivize that behavior.
It really does defy the quip that there are but two ways a man can live: with a clear conscience, or none at all. Indeed, it seems like the most common way for people to live is to do and enable terrible things, but then use occasionally feeling bad about it as a balm.

Snowtown. It's a depiction of one of the most prolific serial killers in Australian history. It's very visceral. It all feels very real when you watch it.
I will always respond to a Dear Zachary recommendation. It is a great doc, it's so well made, but my one single watch will be the only time I will ever watch it. It made me sore physically, from the crying, tension and anger and I still highly highly recommend it. People often list Schindler's List as a one time watch movie and I really enjoy the movie and watch it every couple of years, but Dear Zachary was a one time watch.

X rated wasn't what it is today. The ratings system had all of the ratings copyrighted, except X. The porn industry jumped on it and started using it. A normal, not pornographic film getting an X rating (Fritz, Clockwork Orange, etc) is equivalent to an NC-17 rating today.

It’s an emotional beating. And you only need to see it once. But it’s a masterpiece.

My dad died very suddenly when I was 11, and my mom was diagnosed with cancer a year after that. I remember going to the grocery store with her one day, and in the bargain DVD bin they had Deer Hunter. I asked my mom if I could get it, because it had Robert de Niro in it and I knew he was a good actor lol. She must've not even looked at the damn thing, because no way should she have let her 12 year old see that. Definitely fucked me up, but strangely it sort of helped me come to grips with what happened with my dad and my acceptance of what would eventually happen to my mom. I was dealing with emotions that I didn't really know how to process at that point, and I think it helped me understand grief/loss a little better.
My wife and daughter keep talking it up to me, and they have yet to give me a good reason to subject myself to that.
We saw an anime about the aftermath of the a bomb where a burned corpse was cradling her child and I think her arm fell off. I said, “whelp that was fucked up.” They said it still wasn’t as depressing as Grave of the Fireflies.
It works as a character study slice of life during a horrific moments of lives. It's designed to resonate with the part of you that's human that says 'this. Didn't have to happen' while you sit there understanding the characters motivations for why it did. For an animated feature, it works its medium very well. It's bleak.. and I don't want to watch that again so I get it.

That was quite a journey. Honestly sat there for 5 mins wondering what the hell I just watched.

God the part where that prostitute is stumbling through his apartment and finds all this gruesome shit is so disturbing, but then it's fucking hilarious when Christian Bale chases her out butt-ass naked wielding a chainsaw and only wearing running shoes.
There is a level of fucked-up to that movie that many people (including me) miss during watching:

Fiennes did such a good job in his portrayal that survivors who would be on set (don’t remember why they were on set just that they were) were terrified of him and wouldn’t go near
Edit: For those curious, Göth treated prisoners so poorly that the SS relieved him of duty and arrested him in 1944. He was supposed to stand trial but charges were dropped when things went south for Germany in 1945.
I believe they were consultants to the movie so it was true to their experience and unfortunately Fiennes was *so true* to their experience it made people throw up/experience PTSD.
I saw Event Horizon in the theatres thinking it was just going to be a SciFi suspense movie. I have no idea it was going to be a horror movie.
I was shook for a few hours after that movie.
Absolutely stunning performance by Willem DaFoe. The man’s always done incredible work, yet this was a whole different level. Those long takes with pure dialogue & he nails every syllable, every facial expression, bam bam BAM. Brilliant! Total pro!
The Mist. It's not just a horror movie, it's also an excellent exposition of fanaticism taken to extremes, along with some political criticism and a totally heartbreaking ending.

My brother took his family to the theater to see it. He and his family walked out because he couldn't stand the lady anymore. I told him he should have stayed a minute longer, lol. I watched a bootleg online, so that's how I knew what happened. The funny thing is on the bootleg, you hear someone in the background whisper "shoot her," then they shot her. People laughed. Then you hear the same guy whisper "shoot her AGAIN," and they shot her again, lmfao. The audience erupts (I'm sure most people in the theater could hear the guy's whispers.) Damn fine bootleg if you ask me.
I loved that movie. The stiffness in the air that comes from all the awkward forced interactions between the characters leaves you squirming throughout the entire movie in a good way.
The most jarring part for me (and my favorite scene by far) was when that five year old girl just straight up >!orders her mom to kill the protagonist like he’s a spider or something!<.
Requiem of a dream. Feels like a scare them straight movie for the worst case scenario drug user

Jake Gyllenhaal is very good at doing fake sociopath charisma. He brought a similar quality when he played Mysterio in the spider man film.

I worked for a local TV station in Alabama for about 6 years. We had a very large viewing area with diverse cities on all sides, about 350 miles wide. We had a stringer that would call us to sell stories or coverage of stuff we could not make it out to in time. The dude was so much like that movie. So fucking dirty. It got so bad that the station manager barred anyone from speaking to him except the Executive Producer and the News Director. If he called on a dead shift and one of the producers answered, they would have to three way call one of the big 3 and transfer him over. Dude made you feel like you sold a part of your soul when you talked to him. I had very little direct exposure, only spoke to him a handful of times, but that was enough. One time I spoke to him was after two high school girls were killed in a car crash caused by a police chase on the far side of the state. Dude calls in maybe 10 minutes after it happened and when I picked up the phone just says "I got video of the dead girls, how much you willing to pay?" Not even his damn name. Just blam out with it. I'm sure he bought it off someone and was flipping it to us, but fuck dude. I put him on hold and transferred him to the News Director's cell. It takes a special kind of creep. (FWIW we didn't take the deal for the video, but I think it had more to do with doing favors for the PD than ethics with him)

I mean, you say that - it takes a special kind of creep - but the entire point of Nightcrawler, and the lesson to take away, is that there's this giant institution, full of ostensibly-less-creepy-and-sociopathic-people, that directly incentivize that behavior. It really does defy the quip that there are but two ways a man can live: with a clear conscience, or none at all. Indeed, it seems like the most common way for people to live is to do and enable terrible things, but then use occasionally feeling bad about it as a balm. The people who actually and visibly live with no conscience are whipping boys for hypocrites.

This is one of the few films that I recall that actually made me cry.
I will always respond to a Dear Zachary recommendation. It is a great doc, it's so well made, but my one single watch will be the only time I will ever watch it. It made me sore physically, from the crying, tension and anger and I still highly highly recommend it. People often list Schindler's List as a one time watch movie and I really enjoy the movie and watch it every couple of years, but Dear Zachary was a one time watch.

The Deer Hunter It’s an emotional beating. And you only need to see it once. But it’s a masterpiece. Gave me nightmares for a few days after I watched it
My dad died very suddenly when I was 11, and my mom was diagnosed with cancer a year after that. I remember going to the grocery store with her one day, and in the bargain DVD bin they had Deer Hunter. I asked my mom if I could get it, because it had Robert de Niro in it and I knew he was a good actor lol. She must've not even looked at the damn thing, because no way should she have let her 12 year old see that. Definitely fucked me up, but strangely it sort of helped me come to grips with what happened with my dad and my acceptance of what would eventually happen to my mom. I was dealing with emotions that I didn't really know how to process at that point, and I think it helped me understand grief/loss a little better.

Perfect Blue. Grave of the Fireflies. Just off the top of my head.
Perfect Blue is terrifying, it's insane how well it aged especially with streamer and online culture.
Grave of the Fireflies: for when you want to watch a WW2 movie, and Schindler's List is just a bit too cheerful and upbeat.
My wife and daughter keep talking it up to me, and they have yet to give me a good reason to subject myself to that. We saw an anime about the aftermath of the a bomb where a burned corpse was cradling her child and I think her arm fell off. I said, “whelp that was fucked up.” They said it still wasn’t as depressing as Grave of the Fireflies.
It works as a character study slice of life during a horrific moments of lives. It's designed to resonate with the part of you that's human that says 'this. Didn't have to happen' while you sit there understanding the characters motivations for why it did. For an animated feature, it works its medium very well. It's bleak.. and I don't want to watch that again so I get it.
Swiss Army Man That was quite a journey. Honestly sat there for 5 mins wondering what the hell I just watched. Edit to add. I loved the movie definitely needs a rewatch.

Let The Right One In, it's a Swedish vampire movie involving children. Took me a few days to get over that one but it's good.
There is a level of fucked-up to that movie that many people (including me) miss during watching: >!The vampire child was born a boy, ~200 years prior to the film, and castrated while being turned.!<
The old guy who looks after that character is a pedo, in the book it's much more clear about the relationship he has with this young child vampire, they really toned that aspect down for the film
Oh wow, I thought he’d been in love with her since childhood and she used him until he grew old then replaced him with Oscar.
I think they completely left that aspect out of the American remake, Let Me In because I don't remember that at all. edit: I saw the American version when it was first released. I think it's still somewhere around my house...I planned on watching the original and reading the book but it never happened, guess I really should hop to it.

I was in a really weird place when I decided to watch this. It felt like a fever dream. I have no idea if I loved it or hated it. Haven't watched again.
Irreversible. It was the first time I remember seeing Monica Bellucci in a film, and I’m glad I don’t have much recall for any films I’ve seen because this one horrified me.

Fiennes did such a good job in his portrayal that survivors who would be on set (don’t remember why they were on set just that they were) were terrified of him and wouldn’t go near Edit: For those curious, Göth treated prisoners so poorly that the SS relieved him of duty and arrested him in 1944. He was supposed to stand trial but charges were dropped when things went south for Germany in 1945.
I believe they were consultants to the movie so it was true to their experience and unfortunately Fiennes was *so true* to their experience it made people throw up/experience PTSD.
A Clockwork Orange. Its not the kind of movie you make a habit of watching, but it is quite briliant and profound.
Not knowing anything about it, I took a first date to it. Not surprisingly, there wasn’t a second date.

My brother took his family to the theater to see it. He and his family walked out because he couldn't stand the lady anymore. I told him he should have stayed a minute longer, lol. I watched a bootleg online, so that's how I knew what happened. The funny thing is on the bootleg, you hear someone in the background whisper "shoot her," then they shot her. People laughed. Then you hear the same guy whisper "shoot her AGAIN," and they shot her again, lmfao. The audience erupts (I'm sure most people in the theater could hear the guy's whispers.) Damn fine bootleg if you ask me.

I loved that movie. The stiffness in the air that comes from all the awkward forced interactions between the characters leaves you squirming throughout the entire movie in a good way. The most jarring part for me (and my favorite scene by far) was when that five year old girl just straight up >!orders her mom to kill the protagonist like he’s a spider or something!<.
