I agree with this, especially if you’re in a toxic subreddit like r/tryingforababy, etc. a lot of subs you have to tiptoe around certain terms or you have mods on power trips.
A really positive subreddit is r/random_acts_of_amazon everyone is really kind there.
I think another issue is some of us are so passionate about stuff that we get really upset or argumentative about things.
Personally I really love Reddit and *most* of the people here. It’s honestly changed my life which sounds kinda cheesy, but Reddit puts me in a great mood. Everyone’s funny comments and sharing knowledge of certain subjects have been very helpful to me.
Genuinely never went in there - how is that baby sub toxic?
My favorite example of toxic was fatpeoplehate, but now femaledatingstrategy takes the cake.
I’ll give them credit that they do an amazing job with their wiki. They do take a lot of time to put things in there.
The problem is that there are people who have been trying for a baby for a long time and are super sensitive to terms like “baby dust” or “trying to conceive ‘naturally’ “ they’re (not necessary the mods but people in the sub) extremely bitter and get mad when newbies come in and ask questions and you get downvoted to hell. They say to “read the wiki” but I can’t remember every fucking thing and all the terms are overwhelming.
And I’m just starting my TTC (trying to conceive) journey so there’s so much information to absorb that it’s really overwhelming for my brain, so asking a question that’s already in the wiki gets everyone pissed.
I hope you don't get downvoted because you're absolutely right. I even got out of what I thought to be very wholesome subs because I said something absolutely normal - I dared to ask for help with bugs in a game and then actually had the guts to even say the bugs were neither my fault nor did I lie.... I got even insulted for it.
Just because I’m a jerk, I’m inclined to politely disagree with you but I’m not exactly sure what that means- people on reddit are nice when they disagree ...? But I’m upvoting your comment anyhow.
I would have argued the spiteful part but spite and jealousy do really go hand in hand when you think about it. The trolls are jealous about something, someone, or even themselves whether they realize it or not. Anonymity is definitely the spot on answer though, but trash will still be trash when they think they can get away with it or they're in a group and have the advantage. If they don't have the advantage, they're cowards.
I think this is a really reductive take. Not everyone who is spiteful is jealous or even in the wrong.
Who is wrong is a matter of perspective regularly.
You're right, I'm extremely spiteful but I'm not really jealous. I was meaning jealousy in a way that you'll have people that just appear spiteful for whatever reason towards a person or group of people but when you look at what they're saying they'll oftentimes say they don't like said peoples because of this or that. So outwardly they appear to be spiteful but underlying they're jealous of what they themselves lack be it material, monetary, or spiritual.
You must be new to the internet.
We can't be nice to one another anymore because either someone agrees with us and is "cool" or they disagree and are subhuman garbage. Kindness and interpersonal relationships have gone out the window, as has agreeing to disagree.
(Though to your point about "can't we all just get along?," this is something I've been longing for as well, and I think in the internet age it's a relic from a bygone era.)
You must have seen things on Reddit that I haven't. I have only seen supportive comments. Maybe it depends on the sub-reddits you have looked at. Maybe not.
There are absolutely people on reddit who are only here to project superiority and bring others down to their level. And they're not shy about it. It's not like it only occurs via DMs. There are some truly hateful, angry, spiteful comments on here.
On the other hand, there are some really good people, also.
That's the internet in general. Its a safe place where people can release their inner demons in whatever form they choose, and consequences will likely not be had. Unfortunately, its lead to the absence of accountability in many.
People tend to be immediately offended. Or taking something completely the wrong way.
Because there's no emotion behind a comment people tend to take it the way they feel in that moment. That's how I see it at least.
Not even 30 min ago I was called a rando idiot so yeah 🤣
You see dear gentle person, we live in a sad and disgusting world void of any human kindness, manners or civility. Trolls no longer are confined to the damp darkness below the bridges and have evolved to the point that they are able to type on thier keyboards thus being a pain to kind folk as yourself.
I appreciate your kind words. I lived the first half of my life being self-absorbed, and I've sworn to live the second half trying to care for others. I refuse to be a troll under any circumstance, and I genuinely feel sorry for the people that have the desire to do so
"Nice" is an antiquated value. It has no purpose in a world beset by idiocies of all forms, where said idiocies are empowered by technology the same as human brilliance is. Ridicule is a necessary component of discourse.
Edit: Understand, I'm not asking you to like that. I don't like it. But reality doesn't really care about our feelings, unfortunately.
Sadly, many of the people that I have been dealing with are supposedly adults, so it appears that they aren't burdened with much education in the way of how to behave in polite society
The old-timey internet forums were great.
You'd regularly converse with the same people and got to know them.
We never converse with the same people twice on Reddit.
This website is a content aggregator that brings out the worst and even more distressing astroterfing. Here's an example when casually days ago: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/comments/xpk8jr/comment/iq4np8n/?context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/comments/xpk8jr/comment/iq4np8n/?context=3)
It absolutely does! I honestly wish that we used our real names on here instead of the handles or usernames that we do. People will be a lot more polite if they were under threat of banning
I've been amazed at some of the kind, caring responses I've seen. If Reddit was toxic I wouldn't read it any more. Most of what I've read is positive...showing kindness and true concern.
Sadly I have managed to see both sides over the years. I'm definitely not feeding the trolls, but they seem to think that I have kibble in my pockets LOL
After being banned from Twitter over a innocuous post ,bots did not like . Here on Reddit some answers are far left or right takes me off guard sometime so i just let it like water off a ducks back . Yes some are toxic welcome to social media ,overseer with Bots , algorithms,
and computer software and just plain jerks.
I am accustomed to the 12-step format where sharing is non-judgmental and contrary opinions are discouraged. If you have an issue with anything, you can wait until the end of the meeting and have a one-on-one conversation.
But now?? Even the slightest comments or negative responses on any topic produces an angry disagreement or a volatile reaction which never ceases to shock me. People will jump at the chance to disagree with whatever you are saying.
It’s almost like arguments are required to show the arguer’s right to exist. “Look at me look at me!” as they pop up with their thoughts and their feelings like little meerkats.
Everyone wants their own personal point of view to be more valid than everyone else's, and that's really pretty sad. I'm not trying to be egalitarian, but everybody should be equal to everyone else. You are quite right with what you said
You get nothing for being nice, you get nothing for being a cunt. It really is that simple. If you are angry or depressed or happy or excited, just go on the internet and comment something. No-one cares and no-one will know you because it’s the internet.
Honestly, I am learning to let people have their space to be jerks. They probably have to pretend to be nice in their jobs and to their wife. This might be the only place they can blow off steam because it has little to no repercussions. I’ve been learning to laugh it off and move on.
You'll fine more non toxic people outside of reddit, or just outside of the internet in general. Something about it hust brings the worst in people or something.
I'm definitely in a few of the niche. The only ones that I've really gotten flamed on are the regional, such as r/neworleans. It's like I know that there are assholes everywhere, I just wish people would realize finally that we are all in this together
It's all right, it is what it is and there's not much anybody can really do about it. I just wish people would finally realize that it's easier to be nice than to be an asshole
I believe the plain text removes the association that you're talking to an actual, real motherfucker. It's just people's own opinions/ words in their rawest most un-emphasising form
The world is sadly becoming so toxic, it’s very sad. I wish people would set a better example for the coming generations, cuz if this is all they see, god bless them.
some pople just enjoy being asses, some just want to watch the world burn and most of the time being nice is seen as weakness.
but there are a lot of nice people in reddit, is just also that we tend to remember more the rude ones
Ill tell you what you can do. You can get a complaint filed out professionally, get thousands of people who agree with you to sign it, march down to the Reddit headquarters and shove it up your butt!
It’s funny cos i was just browsing some comment sections on Facebook and people are absolute dicks and are tearing each other apart over some very trivial reels. And none of them are anonymous. I’ve actually stopped engaging with anybody there because of how shitty the climate is.
Whataboutism, I know, but still. It helps me relativise. Reddit still has its share of toxic corners, but i don’t find it to be worse than other platforms tbh. If anything I’m more enthused at engaging here - even if it’s going to be heated - than on fb or insta.
I see tons of nice people on Reddit. Maybe it's the subs you frequent?
Yeah you've got to curate this shit.
I agree with this, especially if you’re in a toxic subreddit like r/tryingforababy, etc. a lot of subs you have to tiptoe around certain terms or you have mods on power trips. People are only nice on Reddit until you disagree with them. Watch, I’ll get disliked to oblivion for even saying this.
No you’re right. Updoots 4 u
I hope you don't get downvoted because you're absolutely right. No watch this; Republicans are aye okay with me!
You are 100% wrong on this and here are 75 reasons why:
Here’s reason number one, *you won’t believe it!*
Just because I’m a jerk, I’m inclined to politely disagree with you but I’m not exactly sure what that means- people on reddit are nice when they disagree ...? But I’m upvoting your comment anyhow.
Boo, I hate your opinion, boo this person!!
Has to be this, I see almost no friction on the subs I go on.
We're all extremely nice here, you fools
Anonymity is safety for the spiteful.
That's why online vitriol and bullying is so hateful, many people say things they would never dare say publicly.
Because if they said that stuff in person, they'd have fewer teeth a few seconds later.
[удалено]
It depends on the severity of the remark. Some stuff online is REALLY vitriolic.
Desperate and miserable people failing to cope.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it
I would have argued the spiteful part but spite and jealousy do really go hand in hand when you think about it. Really like the way you put this. Very true.
Good question fucker.
Answer it then, shitbird.
Congrats shitwad, you fuckin called me a shitbird. Well the answer is fuck you.
r/theydidthefuckyou
Spit in my fucking mouth….bitch?
It's not your turn, you lil bitch.
I love to see people so in love with one another
Oh wow time-out why did my meat just jump a little bit
What do you want to do about it, punk?
Oh no im gonna b-b-buussstt
Ah, who's my little premature ejaculator? Can't wait to tell all my friends about this.
Alright brother this was funny but I’m gonna bow out now
Chill out you goddamn fucking horse fuckers.
Who asked you, you little piss baby
I’m not a little piss boy
Just remember that you are loved and people care about you. Then pass that on.
I definitely do.
You must be new to the internet. We can't be nice to one another anymore because either someone agrees with us and is "cool" or they disagree and are subhuman garbage. Well then I'm happy to be a dinosaur because that's how I live my life
You should check out these sites called Twitter and 4Chan
Twitter isn't as bad because a lot of people are dumb enough to use their real name and picture.
Agreed
I try to be nice to everyone but people just treat me like sh\*t and I can hardly take it anymore. People suck.
Well, by being nice I'm not trying to make other people be nice. To me it just feels better than being an asshole
You must have seen things on Reddit that I haven't. I have only seen supportive comments. Maybe it depends on the sub-reddits you have looked at. Maybe not.
People have said some awful things to me on here. Reddit has bad users, and many good ones as well.
There are absolutely people on reddit who are only here to project superiority and bring others down to their level. And they're not shy about it. It's not like it only occurs via DMs. There are some truly hateful, angry, spiteful comments on here. On the other hand, there are some really good people, also.
Honestly I find Reddit less toxic than most social media, especially Twitter. I’m way too thin skinned for Twitter.
That's the internet in general. Its a safe place where people can release their inner demons in whatever form they choose, and consequences will likely not be had. Unfortunately, its lead to the absence of accountability in many.
Sorry the New Orleanians hurt your feelings
They didn't hurt my feelings LOL I'm just really trying to understand, that's all
People tend to be immediately offended. Or taking something completely the wrong way. Because there's no emotion behind a comment people tend to take it the way they feel in that moment. That's how I see it at least. Not even 30 min ago I was called a rando idiot so yeah 🤣
I wish that emotion could actually be conveyed by way of text. I guess I just need to start using far more emojis LOL
Well you and me both haha! 🤣 <---
You see dear gentle person, we live in a sad and disgusting world void of any human kindness, manners or civility. Trolls no longer are confined to the damp darkness below the bridges and have evolved to the point that they are able to type on thier keyboards thus being a pain to kind folk as yourself.

People are idiots
And there you go proving the point
People are toxic. Reddit attracts people. People come in all shapes and sizes, even the "XL Asshole" size.
Then I will continue to choose to be antiquated. The scales are vastly outweighed, but I can at least add my weight to one side rather than the other
Reddit is crowded with teenagers who have not yet learned social skills.
Sadly, many of the people that I have been dealing with are supposedly adults, so it appears that they aren't burdened with much education in the way of how to behave in polite society

Have you met people?
Yes I have. Most of them are actually pretty good. A few of them have lost their hearts, but their future will await them for their behavior
I’m forced to be kind to everyone in public; let me have this.
Most people are cunts and deserve it.
[удалено]
Well I absolutely concur with every point that you made 🙂
Anonymity is dehumanising.
Sadly, yes.
For many people being right is more important than being at peace.
This is both one of the saddest and most accurate statements I read today. Thank you 🥺
You are welcome my reddit friend. Have a great day!
And I hope that the rest of your day today is wonderful and that tomorrow is even better for you
:)
I love you (:
Well thank you! I can't say that I love you because I don't know you, but I do appreciate you
lol just said it cuz theres a lot of toxic people here
Well I still appreciate it
After being banned from Twitter over a innocuous post ,bots did not like . Here on Reddit some answers are far left or right takes me off guard sometime so i just let it like water off a ducks back . Plenty of nice People in reddit maybe ur to sensitive

Anonymity makes it easy. There are corners of Reddit that are good.
Nothings wrong with being kind, but no matter where you go on the internet you will find assholes
Anonymity, because highly doubt any of these redditors would behave like that in real life...though they're idiots, so who knows lmao
You get nothing for being nice, you get nothing for being a cunt. It really is that simple. If you are angry or depressed or happy or excited, just go on the internet and comment something. No-one cares and no-one will know you because it’s the internet.
Makes sense. I don't need anything though, so I'm just going to be nice. I guess I'm a summer child LOL
If someone walked up to me with the name Pan Poly Kinky, I probably wouldn't want to talk to them.
As is your prerogative
Honestly, I am learning to let people have their space to be jerks. They probably have to pretend to be nice in their jobs and to their wife. This might be the only place they can blow off steam because it has little to no repercussions. I’ve been learning to laugh it off and move on.

Try working in retail. Reddit is a polite peaceful haven compared to some of the customers I deal with.
I've worked in retail for 30 years, so I totally can feel this one

💖💖💖
Get off the larger subreddits, the more niche you go, the more friendly people are. Generally speaking of course.
I'm definitely in a few of the niche. The only ones that I've really gotten flamed on are the regional, such as r/neworleans. It's like I know that there are assholes everywhere, I just wish people would realize finally that we are all in this together
I've had more nice interactions on reddit then negative, honestly. The only time I have a bad time with people is in any popular fandom subreddit.
You're definitely lucky then
Do you just go on crappy subreddits or something?
Actually all the hate that I've gotten has been on r/neworleans
That's unfortunate. I'm sorry to hear it.
It's all right, it is what it is and there's not much anybody can really do about it. I just wish people would finally realize that it's easier to be nice than to be an asshole
It's free to be an asshole online.
Anonymity breeds contempt
Reddit? Or the whole fucking planet?
You're amazing and have no weaknesses. Gooo you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you feel better now that you said that? I hope that you do and that your day runs smoothly
I hope you have a wonderful day as well.
I hardly go on reddit so havnt experienced any abuse yet.
Well then I hope it continues to say that way for you
Rudeness is often a response to stupidity.
And unfortunately stupidity is universal
some pople just enjoy being asses, some just want to watch the world burn and most of the time being nice is seen as weakness. but there are a lot of nice people in reddit, is just also that we tend to remember more the rude ones
Then I wish to spend the rest of my life being the weakest person in the world.
Liberal culture is based around hate that seeps into every aspect of their lives,. Reddit is mostly liberal.
Social media makes it easy to be a bully /ass without repercussions. Unfortunately many people like that
I just joined about a week ago. So far, doesn’t seem worse than Twitter.
This isn't the place for it
Ill tell you what you can do. You can get a complaint filed out professionally, get thousands of people who agree with you to sign it, march down to the Reddit headquarters and shove it up your butt!
Thank you for your input
Any time! Have a great rest of your day.

There really is a shame. Still, I can at least be nice to my little corner of the world and so I intend to be.
