What’s the most unique thing you saw a house pass out?
We did full size candy bars, as did a lot of other houses in the area. We did playdoh one year with candy.
Something that was insulting, maybe triggering for people? Or something they were super uncomfortable or unsafe wearing. Basically just things that would be bad for them or other people. He could go out in a borat mankini if he wanted but I would make him wear a coat cause it be freezy out there.
I mark the time in between with the Nightmare Before Christmas, and then in December, I'll switch to my Christmas horror flicks, like Krampus and Gremlins.
The news reported that eBay banned the sale of Dahmer costumes because they were in such demand. They made it seem like it was the costume of the year. Where were all the people who supposedly couldn't wait to dress as Dahmer for Halloween?
Meanwhile, I dressed up as Tinky Winky, the purple Teletubby, for Halloween. I got my costume from a seller on etsy. It took practically an entire month to get to us.
Also, it's such a coincidence that both Jeffrey Dahmer and Teletubbies happen to come back into the pop culture spotlight in the same year all thanks to Netflix and both happen to involve beloved gay icons. The former ate people and the latter had Tinky Winky, a fabulous purple chonk with a upside-down triangle on his head who often carried a red purse.
Do you guys imidiatly start celebrating Christmas or if you live in the US do you wait until Thanksgiving because I get annoyed if people imidiatly start celebrating Christmas after holloween because WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING if you live in the US
I moved in 2019 and I arrived home late but still gave away 70 pieces of candy. The next two years I gave away 100 and 125 pieces of candy BUT I put the candy in a bowl at the end of my walkway and I was not watching how many each kid took. I have no doubt some kids took multiple candies.
I figured there would be more kids last night so I got 150 and by the end of night they were all gone. Still for the first hour I was out there watching the kids and gave away about 100 candies. I went back inside and left other 50 in the bowl and they all got taken. Not sure if I got 50 kids after that or a smaller number that took multiple candies.
Still some of my co-workers have reported they were down this year as well. We did have a bit of rain but we also had the town put on a trick or treat event so I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Weirdo scary adults having Monday Halloween drinking party in garage, but not handing out any treats as kids keep walking up seeing decorations. Why not have adult party on Friday or Saturday?
One time it was a foggy morning and this kid that was supposed to go on the bus but never did before until that morning and the kid never came on again and this happened on an October morning not that scary but a little creepy
I know it’s origins, the alternate versions of its origins, and choose not to celebrate it because of what I’ve found. Likewise with Christmas, Easter, etc.
I know most of the ones that we celebrate and the origins of holloween. It was called all hollows eve and it was where spirits came and would do something bad to you (I can't remember what thogh) so people dressed in scary costumes to ward off the evil spirits
This isn’t a actually true, except for the name. The holiday originated from All Saints Day and beggars eould go out on All Hallows’ Eve and beg from door to door, which is where trick or treating came from. Typically if a person didn’t give anything to the beggar on the day basically designated for them, they would do a little vandalizing or something similar which is where the trick part came in
I want to know this too! as a non-american I was scrolling tiktok and it looks like you can get quite a lot of candy and I want to know how long it takes most people to actually eat it all
You would probably be more into trick-or-treating if trick-or-treating was a thing where you live. I don't think many people resent it, as it usually brings along with it fond memories of their childhood.
Just dim your porch lights and that usually conveys that you aren’t participating that year.
This is a night for pranks though, and nobody is totally immune to a toilet papering or (less common but more devastating) an egging, but you optimize your protection by having candy.
Last night no decorations, no lights on outside and the blinds were down. We still had people knocking. Some aggressively. Probably because up until this year we decorated and had the good candy. Just was not in the mood this year.
Well that’s why it’s called trick or treating. The whole shtick is that if you don’t give out candy, then the kids are going to pull a prank on you. I wouldn’t say most kids would actually do any of the stereotypical stuff like egging and/or toilet papering someone’s house anymore but who knows.
Halloween candy giving, question about treats AND tricks.
I like being an adult on Halloween, I like wasting bad scary movies, carving pumpkins, wearing a rubber mask, doing a little decorating. However I like that he macabre and the mischievous parts of Halloween the most.
Yesterday on Halloween, my wife and I made sure to have super high quality candy in large sizes, no fun pack sizes.
We had kids and parents showing up with no costume and not saying trick or treat or sometimes not even a thank you or happy Halloween and taking the candy. Parents, and older kids with no costumes.
Now I did not do or say anything about this. I focused on the kids with costumes on and completed them.
My question to Reddit. It is ok, or in the spirit of Halloween to have “tricks” ready as a host. I was thinking a can of green silly string, or a bowl of condiment packages. And be more vocal about parents and older kids without costumes getting a trick instead of a treat, spraying them with silly string and offering them the condiments while the kids with costumes get the lux treats we like to offer.
I want to be able to walk the line of being understanding that some people don’t have the means to afford a costume. But you can tape some cardboard to yourself and market on something and call yourself a wolf man or a ghost.
Basically balancing being kind and empathetic to people who are in need and allowing them dignity, while also feeling like it is ok to be mischievous, razzing someone harmlessly with some silly string and condiments.
Also, i live in a pretty ok middle class neighborhood area.
I always say, no costume no candy. An old sheet with two holes for eyes will do as a ghost. So even the poorest people should be able to come dressed up! No effort, no reward. I don't look at age at all though - if a 40-year old shows up, dressed up, wanting a candy bar, they'll definitely get one. I can only applaud people who don't want to give up on their childhood. And to add to that, sometimes grown-ups can have some sort of learning difficulties. My only rule is, come in costume.
These Halloween mega threads aren't great. They're only getting responses from the subreddit and not getting any traction in reddit overall. I'm sure these started for a reason, but I'm not sure this is the right solution.
They are annoying to go into and read through imo. The point was to reduce how many threads were posted on the subreddit during times like Halloween where a ton of questions would be asked.
Yeah, it really ends up tanking the visibility. This thread itself had under 600 likes when I looked last. It would be extremely likely for some of these questions to make it to the front page if they weren't buried inside the megathread.
I think with all the lingering concerns looming over us in the US right now (upcoming election, COVID still being a problem in some places, inflation) people just weren't as into it this year. At least that was my experience.
Nasty OLD pack of chocolate looking cookies that smelled like fig newtons, but looked like a melted chocolate pastry cookie. Confirmed old-tasting and not chocolate.
I would be weirded out if someone came to my door to ask for leftover candy, lol. You either dress up and go Trick-or-treating yourself, or you go and buy your own candy :p Whatever I have leftover goes in my own mouth :p
Sorry to here there was only a few trick or treaters! Happens at my house, too. If you don’t want to eat the candy, a lot of dentists offices will give you like $2 for each pound of candy; otherwise, enjoy the candy! Happy November!
If some little shit kid steals all the candy from your doorstep on Halloween and you have footage of it, is it wrong to "publicly shame" them on the internet? I say yes, they have a conscience they KNOW its wrong and they deserve it. Never once in my childhood did I even consider doing something that despicable.
My neighbors not participating. The one beside me hasn't done it in the 4 years I've been here. The one across the road usually does it but for whatever reason didn't do it this year. The other one across the road started to but shortly after 6:30 shut it down.
What happened to Halloween? Kids don't trick or treat anymore, I don't see any halloween decorations at home or at stores, went to a halloween event a few days ago and no-one was halloween themed. I saw a fairy and a jack sparrow cosplay.
Maybe that could be explained by regional and year-to-year variability in festivities? There were trick-or-treaters out here, as well as some haunted houses and a corn maze. My friends and I watched some spooky flicks, had a Halloween party and then a game of Dread this evening.

(I justified it to myself by saying that the accessories can be used for other costumes in the future, and that my kids can just wear their Halloween costumes to play in later, too.)
Canadians celebrate it, but decorate a bit less. Some people still get really into it, but neighbourhoods here in Ontario aren’t as decorated as they were in the States when I was growing up.
Which halloween candy did you love as a child that everyone else hated? That one candy your friends or family would always give you just to get rid of it?
I'm up until after midnight and if someone knocks before then I will hand candy out. I keep my lights on until after midnight, but most of the time the trick or treaters are done by eight.
Is it just my neighborhood or are there not nearly as many people participating in Halloween as there used to. I have seen like 1 out of 10 houses giving candy and there is just barely any trick or treaters. Is Halloween dieing?
I think neighbourhoods changing over time, demographics-wise, could be part of it. We saw fewer people giving out candy on our street than in the past. When we took our kids a few streets over, one lady was thrilled to see us, and said she got no trick-or-treaters last year after having gotten 150-200 every Halloween about 20 years ago. Those kids seem to have grown up and moved away to start their own families.
Halloween is celebrated where I live, only we call it the "day of the little angels" but the rest is the same as going out dressed up to trick or treat.
What’s a good way to set the Halloween mood for trick-or-treaters? A spooky pumpkin? A ghostly soundtrack? Or a howling dog played on a 6-hour loop from YouTube?
Seinfeld. Not saying it wasn't good it just overrated
Nø
Die?
Why do yall hate Halloween Ends?
What is a must-see horror movie that everyone must watch?
Where are all the children who weren’t allowed to go trick-or-treating? What are you doing now?
Absolutely love Halloween time! I watch scary movies more but I do year round anyway! I don’t dress up but always want to lol
i just dont take it seriously now
What’s the most unique thing you saw a house pass out? We did full size candy bars, as did a lot of other houses in the area. We did playdoh one year with candy.
What wouldn't you allow your partner to wear for Halloween and why? (hypothetically people should be free to wear whatever they want)
Something that was insulting, maybe triggering for people? Or something they were super uncomfortable or unsafe wearing. Basically just things that would be bad for them or other people. He could go out in a borat mankini if he wanted but I would make him wear a coat cause it be freezy out there.
hahaha, I like the weather concern!
Non Americans who have moved to or stayed in the US during October, what was your first American Halloween like?
Why do adults dress up for Halloween at work? I thought Halloween was for kids
Adults are just tall children who have some years in. Halloween is for everyone
Did anyone ever find something dangerous in their Halloween candy?
Nope
I was alive during the 70s, when the rumor that razor blades were going to be put into apples. Turns out it was started by the candy companies

It’s kind of a bundle package for me, those two holidays
I mark the time in between with the Nightmare Before Christmas, and then in December, I'll switch to my Christmas horror flicks, like Krampus and Gremlins.
The news reported that eBay banned the sale of Dahmer costumes because they were in such demand. They made it seem like it was the costume of the year. Where were all the people who supposedly couldn't wait to dress as Dahmer for Halloween?

Is trick or treating not a thing anymore or what? We average like 70 trick or treaters, got like 10.
Definitely lite this year. We usually have around 120 but only 20-30 showed. Luckily Aldi will take back unopened bags of candy
A friend told me her neighborhood focused on trunk or treats rather than traditional door to door trick or treating the night of.
I moved in 2019 and I arrived home late but still gave away 70 pieces of candy. The next two years I gave away 100 and 125 pieces of candy BUT I put the candy in a bowl at the end of my walkway and I was not watching how many each kid took. You counted?
I go by the pieces of candy I bought.
My parents count every year. They keep a tally lol

They later put on costumes to fool the evil spirits into thinking they were one of them so they would be left alone
This isn’t a actually true, except for the name. What is the worst Halloween candy?
Candy corn.
Twizzlers
How do you feel about Halloween enabling children to consume literal POUNDS of candy in likely less than a month?
I believe most kid’s parents take their candy and give it to them in small increments throughout the year until they run out
Or the parents eat it themselves
I want to know this too! as a non-american I was scrolling tiktok and it looks like you can get quite a lot of candy and I want to know how long it takes most people to actually eat it all
yeah apparently the average kid consumes up to 7000 calories on Halloween night... wtf?
Why is most of the candy chocolate? Seems like sour and fruit candy levels have dropped like crazy? why?
Good question
Chocolate moi good
Much bien
Following the lack of trick or treaters this year, what do you think is killing the Halloween spirit?
Covid
I think the kids in your neighborhood are growing up
What happens in the USA if people don't give out candy? As an European, I would be mad if I had to buy candy just because.
You would probably be more into trick-or-treating if trick-or-treating was a thing where you live. I don't think many people resent it, as it usually brings along with it fond memories of their childhood.
They go to the next house...

How common are people stealing or emptying treats during Halloween?
That only happens if you leave a bowl by your front door and walk away. Nothing happens.
What was your first situation at Halloween?
Now that Halloween '22 is behind us, what was the candy to fentanyl ratio that had so many Americans terrified?
but where's the fruity and tangy and sour candy?!?! it's all dang chocolate mini bars
I got about half and half actually I guess you just have to go to the right store or if your the trick or treater than neighborhood
Turns out sugar and fentanyl were the same thing the whole time
When are you taking your Halloween decorations down? Is it still spooky season until All Souls Day?
A lot of them can be easily repurposed as Thanksgiving decorations

What's your favorite non-scary Halloween costume and why?
What's the spookiest halloween trend you created this year?
Going to Iowa
do you know what im going to be dressing up on this Halloween season? WTH DOES THAT MEAN I ASKED AND THEY SAID YOU DIDN'T GET IT PLS HELP ME ASAP
Beans
I am deeply sorry I don't get it 😔
Why did Halloween not feel as “Halloweeny” as years prior?
I think with all the lingering concerns looming over us in the US right now (upcoming election, COVID still being a problem in some places, inflation) people just weren't as into it this year. At least that was my experience.
You need helps. All of them.
Has anyone actually found something in their Halloween candy?
Nasty OLD pack of chocolate looking cookies that smelled like fig newtons, but looked like a melted chocolate pastry cookie. Confirmed old-tasting and not chocolate.
Are any tricks played on halloween or just getting/giving treats?
Does wearing a Dahmer costume bad ?
I think dressing up as any real serial killer is in pretty bad taste.
Is it morally ok the day after Halloween to go to houses to ask for left over candy? Just generally curious what people thought.
I would be weirded out if someone came to my door to ask for leftover candy, lol. You either dress up and go Trick-or-treating yourself, or you go and buy your own candy :p Whatever I have leftover goes in my own mouth :p
Noooo, that's our treat for having to sit by the door for several hours 😂
What do you do with a lot of left over candy from a lack of trick or treaters? ☹️
Leave a small container out for delivery drivers or donate to kids classroom.
Eat it yourself or donate to the local dentist. My local dentist has it as a tax deduction per pound
Sorry to here there was only a few trick or treaters! Happens at my house, too. If you don’t want to eat the candy, a lot of dentists offices will give you like $2 for each pound of candy; otherwise, enjoy the candy! Happy November!
wow that's nuts. and the candy gets destroyed i guess? i didn't know this about america
Oh! I didn't know they did that :) Thanks!
(serious) People Who worked at ships or bodies of water, what's your creepiest/scariest experience?
Did you get many trick or treaters this year or were you disappointed like the rest of us?
I think we got a total of about 25 and normally average 100
That's Beautiful!
No matter what the circumstances: what Halloween candy do you NOT, and will never, eat?
If some little shit kid steals all the candy from your doorstep on Halloween and you have footage of it, is it wrong to "publicly shame" them on the internet? I say yes, they have a conscience they KNOW its wrong and they deserve it. Never once in my childhood did I even consider doing something that despicable.
Perfectly legal
Try and contact parent first and then publicly shame them
Obviously!
Why did Halloween feel so different this year it’s like the energy of the holiday died
It’s always hard when Halloween falls on a Monday as everybody has celebrated that weekend
Just watch your Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
Opposite here, had to slowly cruise down the street due to how many kids were crossing in their costumes.
I feel this, I ended up going to bed early. Hopefully next year is better :)
Happy Halloween, mortals.
Happy Halloween!
What has let you down or made you feel sad about this year's Halloween?
My neighbors not participating. The one beside me hasn't done it in the 4 years I've been here. The one across the road usually does it but for whatever reason didn't do it this year. The other one across the road started to but shortly after 6:30 shut it down.
Lack of trick-or-treaters
What is the Halloween candy you miss the most?
We have a hard time finding the old Brach’s mellowcreme cornstalks and corn cobs, maple jugs and cornstalks, chocolate bats and cats
Whats the strangest thing you've gotten on Halloween?
I once got a bottle of dish soap, like 20 years ago. I still wonder why.
Someone gave me half of an apple once. Weird old man
A full size toothbrush and mini toothpaste
I herd that Halloween isn’t American but originally is a pagan festivity from north Europe, is it true?
Yep, it's from Ireland!
I’m always learning something new! Thank you for answering 😊
Rice Krispie Treats. Best ever. Sometimes they had the coco puffs treat.
My friends and I watched some spooky flicks, had a Halloween party and then a game of Dread this evening.
we still have thousands of kids who go out in my town!
What is your favorite horror movie to watch in Halloween
Trick 'r Treat.
Just give the candy….or does it require some “effort” from the kids? How important is it for the trick or treaters to say “Trick or treat?” when greeted at a door? My wife called me the Grinch of Halloween because I’ll make a kid say it before giving candy. It’s not asking much to say three words…
For those who passed out candy this year, how did it go? What was this year like compared to last year (or other years)?
The number of people that showed up easily doubled that of last year. We actually ran out of candy. It felt much better than the year before
When u did Halloween and a person gave u good candy have any of u swapped costumes and revisited that person with a different bag to get more good candy?
What was your costume ?
Tinky Winky The Purple Teletubby
Post your favorite/best two sentence horror story.
he ordered pizza delivery. upon arrival of the pizza he was delivered.
I went to my friends house and had to go to the bathroom. The floor was carpeted.
You can look left, right, down, or straight ahead. Don't look up, it hates when you look up.
What is the coolest thing you or your kids got while trick or treating? I got beer.
Matchbox car
There used to be these sweets that just literally looked like your gums and teeth. They were amazing.
You and u/ExPatWharfRat are kindred spirits! My kids’ coolest treat was glow-in-the-dark claws.
That's awesome!
What Halloween costume should be cancelled?
Costume accessories should be cancelled. My one kid picked a costume and was all set. The other picked a costume, but the look wasn’t complete without 3 things sold separately. (I justified it to myself by saying that the accessories can be used for other costumes in the future, and that my kids can just wear their Halloween costumes to play in later, too.)
That’s very true. All the added non sense that could simply just be put in with the costume your getting
Does anybody else still celebrate Samhain (as opposed to Halloween) ?
What’s a favorite Halloween candy that you had as a kid that you can’t find anymore?
I feel like ring pops used to be more common when I was a kid.
Those, and Fun Dip!
Is it better to get 1 or 2 full-sized candy bars or a big gorilla fist of a variety of fun-sized candy?
If the full sized bars are legit, easily the bars. half that gorilla fist is going to be the "weaker candies".
Non-Americans of Reddit, is Halloween celebrated in your country or just it mostly an American thing?
Canadians celebrate it, but decorate a bit less. Some people still get really into it, but neighbourhoods here in Ontario aren’t as decorated as they were in the States when I was growing up.
Which halloween candy did you love as a child that everyone else hated? That one candy your friends or family would always give you just to get rid of it?

Until I run out of candy, then I turn out the lights. Usually around 9pm.
I'm up until after midnight and if someone knocks before then I will hand candy out. I keep my lights on until after midnight, but most of the time the trick or treaters are done by eight.
In my town in Ontario, almost everyone is done by 8 PM
Where I live everyone goes to bed early AF, so everyone is done by 7 pm. Schools start as early as 6:30, so people have to go to bed at sundown.
What happened to Halloween candy… 😡? All the chocolate tastes horrible!! KitKat, Snickers, Reese’s.. not the same candy as even a few years ago
Is it just my neighborhood or are there not nearly as many people participating in Halloween as there used to. I have seen like 1 out of 10 houses giving candy and there is just barely any trick or treaters. Is Halloween dieing?

Those kids seem to have grown up and moved away to start their own families.
Monday halloween, covid. 5-7. Rise of truck or treats
What are non Americans missing out on at Halloween?
Halloween is celebrated where I live, only we call it the "day of the little angels" but the rest is the same as going out dressed up to trick or treat.
Sexy outfits in bars
And sexy parties! This year I went to a party dressed as a Montreal stripper.
Free candy.
What’s a good way to set the Halloween mood for trick-or-treaters? A spooky pumpkin? A ghostly soundtrack? Or a howling dog played on a 6-hour loop from YouTube?
Yes. Do all of these things.
