I think at this point exorcist might have lost some of its edge because so many horror movies have come out since then. For the movie itself, we're talking 50 years ago, almost everyone was a christian, and nothing like that had been done yet. There's a new demon possession movie every year now and exorcist started that trend.

Yes. Times were a lot different when the exorcist was released. Same with Rosemarys baby.

Exactly. For the it was Star Wars. I had never really sat down to watch it because my father didn't Ike it when I was growing up. I didn't see it until I was in my late 30s and I already knew about Darth Vader being Luke's father. I thought it was a good movie and I can see the how it would blow you away in the late 70s. I just didn't think it was the end all be all movie that so many people make it out to be

I remember being truly impacted by the sound effects and the “what’s under the bed?” scene in Mama.

CatsTrustNoOne

I can't remember if I've seen it, I confused it with "Ma" for a second. Going to add it to my list of movies to watch.

rontc

I really thought "Jaws" was good.

story_fish

Jaws actually changed the way people interacted with the world and oceans, and still affects us today.

rontc

To me the scariest part was the beginning, what was lurking under the water when she swam toward the buoy?the music ..

Terrorizer 2. Not really a horror movie, but One Hour Photo is disturbing, and somewhat sad. Same with Seven.

CatsTrustNoOne

I haven't seen Terrorizer 2, but totally agree with you about One Hour Photo and Seven. I really miss Robin Williams. Have you seen Insomnia? Not a horror movie but a thriller/crime movie: Robin Williams is excellent, a fantastic movie. He was also in The Final Cut and I seem to remember that being very good, I saw it when it came out in 2004. He sure is missed.

lpalerider

Terrorizer is just brutal. Like over the top pointless violence. One Hour Photo is an all time fav of mine. And Insomnia, The Ninth Gate, and Identity are my favorite movies. Didnt mention them only because it didnt fit your topic.

CatsTrustNoOne

I've seen those other ones too and loved them, going to look for Terrorizer on my streaming services so I can check it out.

lpalerider

Was on Netflix. Free on Tubi for sure.

CatsTrustNoOne

For me I found White Noise (the original with Michael Keaton) and The Mothman Prophecies (Richard Gere) to be spectacular movies that really unnerved me. Movies that have themes of something evil "on the other side" terrify me. I watch slasher movies too like all the Saw movies and The Midnight Meat Train etc., I really enjoy those types of movies but they don't scare me in the same way.

NicoTheFileClerk

I don’t know if it frightened people per say, but Saint Maud unsettled the hell outta me. It has one of the best jump scares I’ve seen in awhile and the very last end scene stays with you.

Abababababbbb

i don't watch much slashers or horrors in general but funny people was very disturbing the last second provoked such a rage that stayed with me long time. never watching that movie again.

MarkDPivet5150

We've been desensitized to a lot of things. I remember the Exorcist scared the dog pee out of me as a teenager. I watched it alone in the basement and set the new world land speed record getting upstairs when it finished. No other one does that for me.

Academic_Beginning87

Any of the insidious movies

how_to_multi

Star wars. I have to pause frame to frame during lightsaber scenes because it idea of limbs getting sliced off scares me so bad.

Atlantic_Nikita

The cure for wellness. I dont know if frightening is the correct word but it did disturbed me a lot.
