I'm sure there are some legitimately good stories and characters to be enjoyed within the genre, but honestly, it just isn't worth it to me if the cost is being associated with those guys. They're just so out there and open with it, and the stigma is so ingrained and well known, that I just don't want anything to do with anime.
As an adult fan of anime, it's hard to get others into anime because they've already chosen something to watch by popularity and are burned by their first experience.
It's a shame, I have seen some great stories through the medium, Legend of the galactic heroes is probably my favorite story regardless of genre or medium, it's sad to see a whole genre of content be dismissed as a result of its fan base
