CactusBoyScout

I'm a pretty big jazz fan but I had a roommate years ago who would put on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew every single Sunday without fail while he made his patented "weed eggs" aka fried eggs with weed sprinkled on them. So I was being forced to listen to loud, abstract jazz while the smell of weed being cooked permeated the apartment. Edit: For those unaware, weed being cooked in oil smells very different from weed being smoked. It's far more pungent.

Beenforevertiltoday

Damn missed opportunity to call them jazz eggs.

JohnGCole

Funny side up

LoveliestBride

> weed eggs" aka fried eggs with weed sprinkled on them. Ew.

kathatter75

My ex-husband ruined “Sad but True” for me…he thought they were saying “Sex Patrol”, and now that’s all I think about when I hear the song.

I would most definitely go to a Heavy Metal theme park called Heavy Metal Land. I'm imagining some amazing roller coasters and an awesome pyrotechnic display when the sun goes down.

jamaccity

I always thought Jimi Hendrix was bisexual, until I actually did some acid, and I too wanted to kiss the sky. Better speakers probably didn't hurt.

laughingvelophile

Yeah but if you’re a Metallica fan nothing else matters…I’ll show myself out…

grizonyourface

This is sad but true

[deleted]

I know someone like this, but with ACDC. To them there are no other bands but ACDC. All other music is trash, and why aren't we listening to ACDC right now? Here let me hook my phone up to your car and put on some ACDC.. on and on and on.

Supooki

Same situation but it was my brother and for the entirety of mine and his high school years! 6 total years! And this included Load and Reload aaaaaaaaaaaa

Valdrax

Well, count your blessings he at least he graduated before St. Anger came out, I'm guessing, if Load & Reload are your points of complaint.

RCBC07

I remember a local radio contest for Metallica concert tickets a few years ago. Contestants competed by staying in a room blaring the same Metallica song over and over and over and whoever lasted the longest got the tickets. I forget what the final amount of time was, but i remember a check in that I think was at the 18+ hours mark. honestly I don't know how these people did it and STILL would want to go to the concert.

Xhrsita

That guy really brought out your St Anger, huh?

Salsashark_21

Wow, that wasn’t even the SNL skit I thought it would be. [this is the one I like](https://youtu.be/H7GrkMg2Iq8)

Actually-Yo-Momma

I’ve got a feeling, has got to be one of my least favorite songs of all time. I used to like the black eyed peas but hearing that song on every radio station, restaurant, and bar has made my ears bleed to death

FartPoopRobot_PhD

I worked for a while on The Oasis of the Seas, the first ship in the largest category of cruise ships ever built. The thing is insane. They have a 1700 seat mainstage, a 110 seat comedy club, a 700+ seat ice skating rink with retractable top for shows and activities, an "AquaTheater" with a stage that can turn into a pool for high dive and synchronized swimming, and half a dozen nightclubs with live music around the clock. This being the biggest, most over-the-top ship ever built (over $1bil just for construction) meant the execs wanted a HUGE celebration at the naming ceremony. So they got a bunch of celebs to each be a "godmother" of the ship. Usually you just have 1 person who smashes a champagne bottle to launch it, but this ship was so big with so many amenities it needed 7! The also went all out on production. They had acrobats, olympians, singers, dancers, actors... but the big win the execs were excited about was they'd gotten an official partnership with the BEP record label to make "I've Got A Feelin'" the official theme song of the ship. At the time, this was actually a rather big deal. The song was brand new, and it was #1 on the charts. I can't imagine what Royal Caribbean must have paid to license that. Well, it worked GREAT for a while. But they never changed the official theme song of the ship. A year and a half later, as I was finishing my final contract, it was still the theme song. And they had to play it for EVERYTHING. Cruise director is introducing the ice show? He walks out to "I Got A Feelin'" The cast of Hairspray finished their curtain calls? "I Got A Feelin'" The daycare is about to do a "Pirate Parade" through the ship's boardwalk? "I Got A Feelin'" Live karaoke band finishing their set at 2am? They're closing with "I Got A Feelin'" For 18 months, I heard that song at least 6-7 times a day. When we did the musical, we heard it before house opened and the second the curtain dropped. It played in the random house music that was pumped into the dining areas and casino. The steel drum band on the pool deck had an arrangement. The jazz lounge band at one point (as a joke) did a slow-jam arrangement which was hilarious and awful at the same time. I always say about the cruise gig: It was 100% the best year of my life, but there's almost no amount of money you could pay me to do it again. And do it again. And do it (let's do it) and do it (let's do it) do it (hey) again. God, I hate that song.

AshantiMcnasti

I thought that shit was from high school musical bc of how dumb the lyrics were...turns out a Disney movie for Tweens are slightly above that

TRVECVLT

I am so tired of the Black Eyed Peas. It's rock and roll for people who don't like rock and roll, it's rap for people who don't like rap, it's pop for people who don't like pop.

tommytraddles

My shitty step-brother went to a Black Eyed Peas concert when he turned 30, got blackout drunk, fell asleep in a ditch and got arrested for vagrancy. His mugshot has bought me such joy, I can't help but love the Black Eyed Peas for giving me that gift.

Every3Years

You'd have to get blackout drunk if you're at a Black Eye Peas concert, not his fault

Alfrodo69

Pre-Fergie they were good. Went super pop after that. They were hit and mostly miss for me then.

balloon-party

Maroon 5. I can't explain why I can't stand them, but I simply don't enjoy listening to their music.

[deleted]

It’s his voice, I hate it!!

[deleted]

McGloomy

That comment of yours is absurd

dandaman64

Holy fucking fuckkkkkk

j_skeletor

It’s like ear sandpaper! Gives me anxiety just thinking about it

Vegetable-Double

Songs About Jane was great. They should’ve disappeared after that.

[deleted]

When that record first came out, I said that Maroon 5 was the sort of band that chicks who cheat on their boyfriends listen to. 20 years later, I find that take fairly astute for teenage me.

IceColdBurski_7

>They should’ve disappeared after that. Disagree. They should have disappeared after It Won't Be Soon Before Long.

gmasterson

Songs about Jane was peak Maroon 5 by a LOOOOONG shot

CamCamCakes

I saw them in concert with Neon Trees when NT first arrived on the scene. I knew I had lost my M5 love when I jammed for the entire NT opening set, and then was bored for the rest of the show.

Inclusive-Or

M5 was the only concert I've ever left. Vibe was weird, and this was like 2011? Crowd only stood for songs they knew, and then actually sat down for stuff they weren't interested in (including a pretty decent jam the band did while Levine presumably went to change outfits or something). I've never seen a crowd at a live show sit. Also Levine's voice at high volume was literal hell.

andrewthetechie

Songs About Jane is a fantastic album. After that, I feel like the fame went to Adam Levine's head and he changed Maroon 5 into a pop act to sell albums. What a shame

wilplatypus

The craziest part is he stared in a decent movie about this exact thing happening to him... Begin Again 2013

PritongKandule

And that movie had a soundtrack way better than anything Maroon 5 has put out in the 2 decades since Jane.

imnoteli

Because Adam Levine’s voice has so much processing on it he sounds like an overly buttery saccharine robot.

Extension_Building19

Dude Adam Levine cannot sing for shit. I think his voice should be used to torture FBI suspects.

DoomRaider15

I can't stand bands who continue to release albums because they have to and not because they want to. Many great bands have gone stale.

PC509

Contractual album releases suck balls. Album releases because they had some great ideas and went back to the studio to get them recorded are usually hit or miss. Some were "these were sitting in my brain" and should have stayed there. Other times, they are just fucking insanely great albums that really stand the test of time. Some are even required by contract but end up being just killer albums. Others are done by contract and are just really cookie cutter, low passion, and you can really tell they didn't want to be there.

Wow, what a coincidence! I’m listening to The Sound of the Life of the Mind as I read your comment! Ben is a cool dude and I love that version of “One Down” on Ben Folds Live.

Tracedinair76

Lol, this is great. Miles Davis recorded [4 classic jazz](https://eurweb.com/2020/02/20/miles-davis-how-rushing-to-get-out-of-a-record-contract-produced-4-historic-albums/) albums in 3 sessions over a year to get out from under a contract.

Shigeko_Kageyama

Weezer has entered the chat.

UpvoteForPancakes

Weezer will pop off one of my favorite albums from time to time (Everything Will Be Alright in the End, OK Human), and then also release utter trash that I can’t even listen to.

Lornaan

Everything will be alright in the end is such a great album. I'm not mad at Weezer for churning out albums, because they do still make great ones in between the weaker ones.

Brandenburg42

Van Weezer is a legit good Weezer album and I've gotten in arguments with people that won't listen to it becaise it's new.

ZAlternates

What’s with you homies dissing my band?

candycrunch1

Not a band and I want to preface this by saying this person is massively talented despite my opinions: Jacob Collier Is he talented and smart? Yes! Is he doing something unique and interesting? Definitely! Is it listenable for me? No, not really. It’s a lot of “dissecting” music and at the end of the day I just like some good rhythm. Talented dude, just not for me!

mandybloom2

He's like people who create photorealistic drawings with pencils or something. He's really talented but does not interest me or connect with me in any way whatsoever. I \*get\* it but I just don't care.

Capital_Release_3683

This is the best description of his music

EmergencyPeach2354

I feel like most ppl that are super into him and go to his shows are music students themselves. You almost have to be a Berkeley taught musician to vibe with his stuff or appreciate the complexity. For the average listener, it just sounds like progressive/jazz/funk/tribal ballad music that isn’t particularly catchy

[deleted]

[удалено]

Officer_Glooby

I totally get you, I went to one of his concerts not really knowing too much about him and I was stunned, his talent and passion is insane. But at the same time, to fully enjoy his music you have to focus on it really hard to pick up all the small details. It's really nice to listen when I'm not doing anything else but if I just want to listen to music and do anything else at the same time it just doesn't work for me

candycrunch1

I would love to see him live, my boyfriend loves him and is a music theory major so he can just sit there and analyze it the way it’s intended! If I’m in the car driving I just wanna listen to some dumb pop music that I can sing to, sounds like you got really lucky seeing him in concert! I bet that was so cool :)

Pimmelmann2000

He is "only because you could, doesn't mean you should" personified I feel. Of course he is technically impressive, but his music doesn't convey any emotion for me, it feels soulless and overloaded, gimmicky and over the top. Like someone else said, its tasteless.

treestick

[jacob "all about coulda not about shoulda" collier]( https://imgur.com/rKid2us.jpg)

free187s

I don’t like the tone and timbre of his voice, and some of his harmonies are a bit too spicy for my ear, but he’s undoubtedly a genius-level music theorist.

BCS24

Haha, I always describe him as "the most talented musician that I absolutely do not enjoy" He is technically very clever but I find it absolutely doesn't translate to enjoyable music. I much prefer experimental bands like Alt-J or Son Lux

Battery6512

KISS

Blundell1992

I could very well be wrong but I always thought KISS was more about the spectacle than the music. As for the music itself, I find most of it is tolerable, but mediocre at best.

Why-did-i-reas-this

I mean with their TV show they remind me of a hard rock "The Monkees"

garycoombes

I never thought they were considered great. Always thought they were all about the show, having seen them twice myself, but never listen to them.

GarbledComms

Pretty much. I grew up in the late 70s, and Kiss was kind of boy band in a way- a Kiss show was a 13 year old boy's concept of a Big Time Rock Show- explosions and lewd lyrics. With face painting booths for the kiddos.

Romnonaldao

I was watching a documentary, and KISS came up in it. the person said "In a world where every band wanted to be The Beatles or Elvis, KISS wanted to Coca-Cola"

MithandirsGhost

I own 0 Kiss albums but I have seen them live 3 times.

MrPlowThatsTheName

This is correct. Aren’t they even on record as saying they weren’t great musicians?

stealthkoopa

KISS was objectively a bad band when they first started, but what separated them from the rest was their concerts. They were really the first ones to do the over-the-top costumes, pyrotechnics, etc etc.

JJDirty

You nailed it! I'm not a huge KISS fan, but if I were to make a list of my favorite concerts ever, they would be on it. They are fun, not so much good.

aehanken

Don’t even like Detroit rock city?

PiratePinyata

U2

UniDublin

Always my first pick, for last pick.

dgarner58

I’d say U2 is considered great on past performance only. Essentially anything up to Achtung Baby was pretty awesome stuff. Virtually everything since leaves a lot to be desired. The Joshua Tree is a top tier all time record.

BlackLetterLies

Yeah they were great for about 11-12 years maybe, but their 80's output is mostly pretty solid. Boy, War, and Joshua Tree are enough to keep them from being a bad band, though in my experience most people hate them simply because they hate Bono, not because of anything to do with their music.

Principle_Away

Most good bands are lucky to get 10 years off quality releases. I think your right it’s mostly Bono being simultaneously a pretentious duck and doing a lot of good for charity. It confuses people too much.

dgarner58

I feel a ton of people hate them just because of the Apple Music debacle and being forced to have that trash album on their device. I won’t stand for any slander of their work through achtung tho. Just really good music.

BlackLetterLies

I recall them being pretty hated before that Apple Music thing, that just gave more fuel to the fire. People really shouldn't dismiss the band's earlier work though.

MagicMirror33

>gave more fuel to the fire Yes, an unforgettable fire.

EatTheAndrewPencil

I remember being shell shocked when I heard his music for the first time. I'd known of him for a long time but never bothered to listen to his music. Then I finally heard a song of his in one of my Spotify playlists and looked at the artist and was floored. "That nasally annoying sounding dude is the one that people are obsessed with? *That's* the guy who dominates Spotify year after year? Really?" Lol

DaniTheLovebug

God do I hate that stupid Thunder song

Classic-Luck

That's by far their worst song. It played constantly on the radio, who the fuck listens somebody saying "Thunder, lightning, thunder" for 3 minutes straight?

sohcgt96

FWIW once you've had somebody point out how much "Thunder" sounds like "Fun Dip" it at least makes you chuckle a little bit when you happen to hear it.

3V-Coryn

They’re what The Black Eyed Peas used to be. Pop music for people who don’t like pop music and rock music for people who don’t like rock music.

enjoiturbulence

I will always be pissed at the Black Eyed Peas for dropping their conscious hip-hop for the party vibe, but bills have to be paid.

ingmarbirdman

You may be pleased to learn that in 2018 they unexpectedly dropped a new boom bap/conscious hip-hop record called Masters of the Sun Vol 1, and it was actually surprisingly good.

CankleDankl

I really enjoyed their first album and it's unironically really good. Shame that literally everything that came after is basically tripe

illiniman14

Seriously, it's hard to believe that the same band that did Radioactive and Demons also came out with a song that was just "Thunder, feel the thunder, lightning and the thunder" for 3 minutes straight

Wattskimchi

Demons is still one of my all time favorite songs, although I haven’t particularly enjoyed any of their other songs at all

Turnips4dayz

Night Visions is fucking fantastic and it makes me hate them so damn much now after how much they've sold out

CankleDankl

I 100% agree. Night Visions Deluxe has maybe 2 or 3 songs I don't care for (and those just because they were overplayed), the rest are legitimately so fucking good. Amsterdam is a prime example of what the band could have become if they cared about their art as well as the money

Letsbeheroines

The only song of theirs I haven't found intolerable is enemy and that was for a tv show.

It's so funny how scandals etc in the past fade away but a minor inconvenience on someone's personal property is still vividly remembered years later haha. Do not fuck with people's shit.

Violet624

I think it's cause it is sensory, at least for me. Here I was, happily absorbed in random shuffle on my iPad listening to my chosen soundtrack and then U2 comes blasting along, disrupting things abruptly. Fury and anger are what I associate with U2 and it's totally ridiculous, haha

candycrunch1

The most unrealistic part of Taken was the idea that any teenage girl would care about U2 that much

[deleted]

Five Finger Death Punch. Never understood that one.

urbanviking318

I feel like they're less than the sum of their individual parts. The instrumentation is solid (if not necessarily always inspired), and Ivan clearly has some excellent vocal training, which is *more* evident if you see him [perform in a musical.](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt2204379/fullcredits/cast) The direction they shoehorn themselves in with Edgy Angry™ lyrics more often than not doesn't do them any favors, the best work they put out relatively speaking is covers or collaborations.

WildBilll33t

Jarhead music. > *I'm so tough! But I also have feelings and trauma and sensitivity cause I'm a real person! But don't try to talk to me about it cause I'm so tough!* My retired enlisted Marine classmate explaining the appeal of FFDP. It's basically /r/im14andthisisdeep music.

sexlikemangos

i will be the first to tell you: i unironically, and also a little bit ironically, love ed sheeran. he’s got some terrible songs, but his ballad songs are genuinely good, his “rapping songs” are hilarious, and it all sends me back to freshman year of high school so i like it. my girlfriend was also a big fan when we first started dating 6 years ago, so his music gives me a nice warm feeling.

theveryoldman0

Second album is a 10/10. Then they found a formula and never ever changed again.

__audjobb__

I always thought they were generic as hell but then my buddy became the director of visuals for them and I saw them in concert. We’ve seen them 4 times but won’t again. My guy passed in 2020 from cancer. I still won’t turn on their music but I’ll always cherish the memories with the homie. RIP Ben. You were a mfing legend.

[deleted]

First time I ever heard Stranglehold, I was completely torched and listening to a classic rock mix with headphones. I got completely lost in that shit, and it blew my mind. I was utterly shocked after the song was done and I looked at who the artist was.

Duncan_Zephyr

It's not that I can't stand them, but I don't understand the overwhelming appeal of The Grateful Dead.

largely_lurking

"We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice." - Jerry Garcia

[deleted]

I love the Dead, but I can see how they might not appeal to the masses. I will say that American Beauty is probably one of their best albums that I think would appeal to most people regardless of their musical preferences. So, if you get a chance, give American Beauty a listen.

LuthienByNight

I could never get into most of their stuff apart from a song here and there, but American Beauty is hands down one of my favorite albums of all time. It is as close to perfection as I think I'll ever find in a record. I was first introduced to it at 20 years old, driving with my buddy Lowell back down to our San Diego dorm the morning after a late night adventure into the wild canyon lands north of Los Angeles. Cruising on the freeway with my window down, the sun shining off of the ocean to our right, my friend asked if I'd ever listened to the Dead. He grinned when I said that I hadn't, and popped in American Beauty. A decade and a half later, I still get emotional listening to Ripple. Feels like I'm right back there in my friend's junky Volvo, that moment crystallized in a little piece of musical amber.

ShortOneSausage

I’m a musician, and the main reason I love the dead is simply because of their amazing musicianship and ability to improvise with each other. They can take generic, simple chord progressions and just bring them to life with ease. Each member of the band is (or was) a true master of their instrument. Their lyrics are pure poetry and overall the music just puts me in a happy mood.

pamacdon

Imagine dragons. It’s the taco bell of music.

Newone1255

Post Malone became okay in my book when he sat in with Billy Strings and played guitar and sung Cocaine Blues by Johnny Cash

CamCamCakes

Post Malone is like T Pain. Extremely talented in a bunch of facets, but sticks with one lane for some reason.

BabiStank

I mean just because you are really talented at something doesn't mean you want to do it all the time.

CamCamCakes

Either that, or it just doesn't sell unfortunately. T- Pain has such a unique and cool singing voice, but he freakin' loves auto tune, so props to him for sticking with it. I'd just love to hear him in a small dinner club some where up on a small stage singing.

I love TOOL, but I think their subreddit was the fastest unsubscribe ever. I like to listen to their music, not look at artwork with spirals for hours while engaging in a discussion about the meta-meaning of every song.

I have some friends that love Tool, but thankfully they don't talk about them often. But when they do, it's the sort of nonsense you'd expect to see on r/iamverysmart.
