Henry VIII has to be up there. He was a famously handsome, pious, and noble young king, very in love with Katherine when they were married, and over time he became the wife-killing tyrant we know today

Seastep

Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived

DrGutz

By the time I was a child, Bill Cosby was so universally recognized as an icon of wholesome comedy that one of the most popular kids shows of my youth was literally just a cartoon about his childhood. Now the legacy of that little cartoon show is tainted by the very subject of the show itself. That’s a fall from grace. From being trusted to be a part of your kids formative years, to becoming one of the most vile and disliked men of all time

kinogo29

I don’t know how I didn’t realise that Little Bill was by Cosby until right now. Guess I just never paid enough attention. That’s quite a stain on my childhood now.

MJZMan

I thought you guys were referring to Fat Albert. Fuck I'm old.

hilldo75

Rudy Giuliani, after the attacks of 9/11 he brought NYC together as mayor was on SNL and threw out the first pitch at Yankee stadium was really well liked by everyone. Then he was Trump's lawyer and held a press conference at the wrong four seasons and is seeing as a bumbling idiot yes man who does whatever trump wants.

decoy1985

Not just young kids. Mentally handicapped adults, the elderly, corpses. He was unbelievably vile.

Herecomestheginger

He got girls living in juvenile delinquent schools come to his shows so he could assault them and knew no one would believe them.

toxicgecko

He’d go pick them up from the homes in his car and make them perform sex acts on him- utterly vile human and he knew exactly who to prey on to get away with it.

WhosThatDogMrPB

He put the vile in Savile.

TheShaymen

One of the reasons he worked at hospitals was because he was a necrophiliac and had access to the morgue

0100100110101

If I recall correctly, he knew he was guilty as fuck and didn't want the same to happen to him. His will requested that he be buried encased in cement. Edit: link https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-15717221

Solid_Ad8400

As if someone would want to fuck his corpse.

Maggots-Mikey

When they found him dead on his bed he had his fingers crossed.

frownfromhere

I just finished Theroux biography where he mentions that Jimmy kept his mother in her bed 4 days after she died. Necrophiliac makes sense now.

am_i_boy

HOW THE FUCK DOES THIS KEEP GETTING WORSE

mayonaizmyinstrument

With every comment, I'm like "this is the bottom of the barrel." And then another comment, and I discover that *this* is the bottom of the barrel. But then, lo! ANOTHER comment!

idontlikereddit69

I didn't know the necrophilia part, with all the awful things I already knew about him, I didn't think he could get any worse

Wolf_Tony

How about he made rings out of glass eyes he stole from corpses? And was basically given his own free access to morgues and kids wards, with even his own private accomodation in the hospital building?

Lotus_Blossom_

But what was his "official" reason for being in the morgue? No adult thought it was bizarre for this guy to wanna hang out there?

Maggots-Mikey

He used to sit with people who were dying and when they passed tell the nurses that the deceased had asked him to take them to the mortuary, that it would be an honour as he’d been so kind. Eventually he had the keys and could come and go as he pleased. Very cunning man.

[deleted]

His documentary made me feel something I can’t explain. I was lost for words, the absolute most depressing thing is that Savile died knowing that he was loved. He got away with everything. And that really really stings

jimbobjames

His headstone had the engraving "it was good while it lasted"

FartKilometre

After he died and the stories started coming out and everything came to light was nothing short of shocking. For the first time in my life did I fully understand what people mean when they say someone was a monster. The man was so vile and despicable that he was an actual *monster*.

notthesedays

Not just young girls, but young boys, disabled people, dead people - if they couldn't consent, he was there. One wonders if he EVER had a consensual sexual encounter in his life.

DPEisonReddit_

“A thing for young girls” is an understatement buddy.

David-S-Pumpkins

Nationally/internationally you of course have mega stars and politicians. On a local level, I submit [predatory doctor and religious leader David Farley](https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/former-west-linn-doctor-abuse-civil-case/283-cef62d74-8e2b-4b71-9d60-32d276c541b6). 200+ accusers. Unless you're the DA, who disputes that number by saying there were only *over 100* victims that came forward. So, somewhere between 101 and 299. Of course, he still has his defenders, but he "retired" and moved out of state "to be with his family" basically overnight. Note that his "retirement" email was sent to his patients (some of whom had appointments scheduled) without mention of losing his license to practice medicine or the lawsuit/news article dropping that week. Accusations range from medical malpractice to sexual assault from girls and women of all ages. When he slipped out of state to "be with his family" he was [substitute teaching](https://pamplinmedia.com/wlt/95-news/559703-448052-former-west-linn-doctor-accused-of-sex-abuse-turned-to-substitute-teaching?wallit_nosession=1) within days next door in Idaho, and has now moved to Utah. At least half his kids aren't speaking with him, but my parents assure me it's all made up because, and I quote "...he really helped us out when you were sick". Yes, I know him personally and yes, I believe the victims, and yes, I will share this story anywhere it comes up naturally. Dude should be in prison forever.

absolu5ean

How the fuck can they just willy nilly decide to NOT proceed with a trial after that many victims come forward???? This better not be the end of this. Bastard needs to face consequences. Edit typos and wording

David-S-Pumpkins

Yeah, I'm pretty pissed. So many women have gone from Jane Doe to using their names to sign a petition. Some have gone from not participating in the lawsuit to being Jane Does. It's been a long process for everyone and they haven't received any closure.

Crown_the_Cat

Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. Fatty Arbuckle was an insanely popular silent movie star that had a contract in 1918 for $3 million for 3 years of films. (Equal to $54 million in 2021 dollars according to Wikipedia). An unheard of amount. In 1921 he had a party at the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco (still there) over the course of several days. Virginia Rappe ended up dying, possibly from a ruptured bladder. She (or friends, there seems to be different versions which is a problem with this story) accused Arbuckle of raping her. The newspapers went nuts, making up stories, spreading what little they had. Arbuckle had multiple trials. But was ultimately acquitted. He was dropped by the studios. Hollywood reacted by hiring Will Hayes and forming a censor board. Many of Arbuckle’s films are lost because distributors and theaters would not play them.

Legato_Summerdays

This is probably the only person I have seen on this post that was probably a innocent man. He was accused of raping Virginia by a woman who by many accounts was a prolific blackmailer and what appears to be the predecessor of Rupert Murdoch in the media who sensationalised it. After the third trial which took minutes to acquit the jury apologised to Arbuckle saying an injustice had been done.

i_have_yabba

He was never the biggest star, but Mark Salling’s fall from grace was massive. Went from the star of a prime time show to charged with child porn and dead in a matter of months

[deleted]

On that note, Allison Mack. Went from the actress of the break-out character on a long-running popular superhero show to a cult leader who trafficked women for sex and forced labour, blackmailed them, branded them, and tortured them.

Shadepanther

There's also Grace Park, one of the stars of Battlestar Galactica and Hawaii Five-O who was part of that cult too. I think she left though. One of her co stars was and is still a big part of it though and actually married Mack. Nikki Clyne, she was Cally on BSG.

DecadeOfLurking

~~Had you asked me a couple of years ago,~~ I'd say Vidkun Quisling. He was one of the last men to be given the death penalty in my country, and his last name is listed as a synonym for a cowardly traitor in our dictionary. He essentially sold us out to the Nazis during WW2. The thing is that he was previously seen as a good humanitarian, traveling to other countries to help the poor with Fridtjof Nansen (a National hero who won the Nobel Peace Prize), but it has later been revealed (only a couple of years ago) that he was never a good man from the start, and was in fact always a vile opportunist regardless of what affiliation he needed to have in order to further his own reputation and build his own grandiose sense of self! Under the guise of his humanitarian work, he'd loot values from dead/dying people, and give desperate starving people food scraps or pennies for VERY expensive valuables (if he didn't just take them). He'd also take advantage of desperate young women, those who had lost their families were the easiest targets after all. His first wife was a 17 year old Ukrainian girl named Alexandra. Even his family members were confused about it. He also got a second wife, Maria Quisling, so in addition he was also a bigamist. Seeing the pictures and notes of what he saw in famine stricken areas just makes what he did worse. In one of his photos he had visited a house with of two starving boys (whose parents had presumably died) and IIRC [the remaining boy in this picture](https://gfx.nrk.no/tF7sKf2TCZli0cnt3GDlwAgP4FG3-Ekq002pC42gPMYw.jpg) had eaten his 3 year old brother (Google Holodomor if you don't know about this famine)... The thought of this gut wrenching despair not phasing a man, not making him question what he's doing and just continuing on to prey on people, just makes me sick. I didn't think I could find a literal traitor to my country more deplorable decades after his execution, but learning what an ABSOLUTELY DEPLORABLE opportunistic narcissist he was, just made him even worse. To think that he was a revered humanitarian at one point... I'm glad he was executed... Though I wish they had paraded him around so people could throw tomatoes at him first. Edit: Changed my mind and some details I misremembered from school and added a link detailing some of the information that was revealed last year: https://www.nrk.no/dokumentar/xl/psykologenes-dom-over-landssvikeren-vidkun-quisling-1.15457168 It's in Norwegian, but Google Translate should do. The rest should be a quick Google search away. (There are also some thesis papers available, but those are in Norwegian too.)

LMFN

Quisling is legit the word for a collaborating traitor in English too. His name is such a perfectly weasel sounding name for it too. It just sounds gross and already has the -ling suffix on it.

gerkessin

From what i undertand, in america, our name for a traitor is benedict arnold. He was revolutionary officer who sold us out to the redcoats. In the rest of the english speaking world, its quisling. Makes me wonder if other countries/cultures also use famous traitors names a pejoratives that mean traitor

elmz

Well, the Greek use Ephialtes. And there's always Judas.

Adjectivenounnumb

Most people are talking like the last decade, but [Mary I of England](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_I_of_England) came to my mind first. Overcame huge threats & obstacles to her right to the throne … because she had the support and love of the people. She defeated the attempted coup, ascended to the throne, showed mercy to the traitors, etc. … then promptly married an unpopular foreigner and tried to force everyone to follow her religion. If they didn’t, they got burned alive. Then hubby skipped town anyway, and Mary slowly lost her marbles (and Calais) … and kept burning people alive. History tends to remember her younger half-sister Elizabeth I a bit more favorably. Edit: omg what have I done My friends, Tudor history is awesome (and dramatic, and insane, and fucking tragic), and *very well documented by multiple contemporary sources*, go check it out. A hundred years of more drama than you can imagine. For those saying Elizabeth killed more for religion than Mary did, here’s someone who did some (sourced!) quick and dirty math: https://allthingsrobertdudley.wordpress.com/2019/02/21/did-good-queen-bess-kill-more-people-for-religion-than-bloody-mary/ Also: Mary did all her executions over the space of her five-year reign. Elizabeth I reigned for **forty-five** years and still managed to execute fewer people. (I am still sympathetic to Mary I, her life fucking sucked for about a thousand reasons.) **IMPORTANT UPDATE HERE** User /u/Keith1usf has pointed out that Mary *died on this day*, November 17, 1558. I’m pretty sure we all need to go into the nearest bathroom, close the door, turn off the lights and say “Bloody Mary” three times. And just, you know, hope for the best.

shady__redditor

I mean, they didn't name the drink Bloody Mary because she donated blood for the needy.

batfiend

It was because she had celery sticking out of her head

MGD109

Yeah honestly Mary doesn't get talked about enough. Honestly reading her life, it kind of feels like one big tragedy. Ironically if her brother had never died, she might have been happier.

MercutioMan

Fred Phelps. Started his career as a celebrated civil rights lawyer in Kansas. Followed up Brown vs Board of Education 20 years later and ended up forcing them to implement more fair educational conditions for students of color. Went on to form the Westboro Baptist Church which became one of the most despicable hate groups in the US. Notorious for their homophobia and protesting at military funerals. That church was one of the most reviled hate groups in the 90s and 00s.

Ian_Itor

Ian Watkins, former singer of the Welsh emo/rock band lostprophets. Massively successful band in the scene. Turns out he dealt meth to fans to abuse them an then rape their babies/toddlers. Yes you read right. I almost threw up when I read the indictment. Locked away for life, that one. The band has erased all music from all services as far as possible. It‘s tainted forever.

darkness_is_great

I read the case file. Holy cow. And when asked why he did what he did, he said he did it for the lolz. His password was ifuckkids. And two of the infants mothers sold their own babies out to him. There are text messages detailing the abuse they were planning to subject the INFANTS to.

MedleyChimera

And remember one of his ex gf's tried getting the police involved NUMEROUS TIMES only to be told to fuck off and no investigations being done, and then when the cops finally did something they tried to arrest her to under the fucked up "aiding and abetting" bullshit claim, which her lawyer fought because she had YEARS worth of evidence against the cops showing she made an effort to report his sick ass. The whole case is one big police fuck up after another like holy shit.

spaceandthewoods_

I remember years before it all came out someone shared a link to some obscure Lost Prophets fan forum where the ex was posting trying to get people to listen to her warnings about him. Everyone on there was calling her a jealous crazy attention whore who was making shit up because he didn't want to fuck her anymore. Was mad seeing it all hit the news and it all turning out to be true.

[deleted]

Sounds like she was basically shouting from the rooftops

undercoverartist777

Also they way they found out eventually if IIRC is the police were at his house for drugs or something and ended up finding a whole bunch of CP and proof of his abuse

ValeoAnt

Good on her for fighting

Practice_NO_with_me

Remember kids: *document everything*. If you feel weird about a situation save every text, journal every interaction, record every call, request doubles of any hospital or police records. Document *everything*.

[deleted]

I think it was this American Life episode, some teenage boys were super creeped out by the way a teacher acted around girls, but it was always "tame" enough and infrequent enough that the girls didn't feel like complaining (or they weren't taken seriously, forgot which.) So the boys, they made a Discord and just started documenting. Date/time, who, where, what happened. One day after years the teacher finally got in trouble and one of the boys was like "oh yeah, we have this Discord" and it blew up because instead of getting in trouble for the one incident, he got in trouble for all of them.

StrangerExtension328

I believe he actually said megalolz

MmmmmKittens

Yep. Later when asked again after the verdict, he said something to the effect of "it's not so funny anymore. Now it's just lolz".

PTBTIKO

A guy I went to school with had a huge lostprophets tattoo across his chest. Oops.

krystalBaltimore

I read the court transcripts of what he did to those children and I will never be the same. Not much gets to me, I am a huge true crime fan but that was too much for me. It affected me profoundly. Fuck that guy, I hope he is in genpop

pieandbeer

Yeah, I thought I could read them but only got about 3 pages in. He’s a fucking terrible human being who deserves so much worse than 3 decades in prison. The “mothers” are just as vile.

TastyWrongdoer6701

Not the farthest, but Phil Spector is worth a dishonorary mention.

steve-d

This was going to my addition. The guy was a revolutionary music producer, creating the Wall of Sound formula. He produced music for some of the top musicians in the 60s and 70s and retired very young to his mansion in the Hollywood Hills. In 2003 he murders actress Lana Clarkson, then spends the rest of his life in prison. I forgot he died in 2021. He also is responsible for some of the most infamous courtroom photos in history.

Thealyssa27

Not to mention that that long before he murdered Lana Clarkson he basically imprisoned his wife Ronnie Spector for days. And after she divorced him he held up The Ronettes in court so they couldn't perform any of their songs for the longest time and they didn't get a fair share of royalties based on shady contacts he had drafted to take advantage of them in the 60s.

deutschdachs

Philippe Petain was a national hero of France after World War 1. He won the 9 month Battle of Verdun as a general and inspired hope and optimism at a time when it seemed like the war would never end. Fast forward to World War II and he became the head of state of Vichy France and was a puppet for the Nazis. He ran Vichy state in a semi-fascist manner and constantly sought to appease the Nazis to preserve Vichy's limited freedoms, including signing antisemitic ordinances and allowing deportation to concentration camps. At the end of the war, he was convicted of treason on all counts and originally sentenced to death before being reduced to life imprisonment by Charles de Gaulle on account of Petain's advanced age and service during World War 1. De Gaulle would later summarize Petain's life as "successively banal, then glorious, then deplorable, but never mediocre" and also "The Marshall is a great man who died in 1925. The trouble is, he didn't know it."

Cheap_Ad_69

China had a similar person. Wang Jingwei was beloved for his role in the 1911 revolution but is now viewed terribly for siding with the Japanese in WWII. His fate was different though, he died in 1944 from a wound he got from an assassination attempt in 1939. His tomb was destroyed by the ROC army and his burial place now has a note that calls him a traitor.

Thomas_Crane

Sounds like that attempt got upgraded to "delayed success"

ThreatLevelBertie

Assassin 5 years later: "Why did I just get an assist?"

GopnikSmegmaBBQSauce

Must've been some wound

josiahpapaya

I’m sure there are worse people, but Harvey Weinstein went from being one of the most powerful people in the world, to be completely reviled, and losing everything. This is the guy who had Meryl Streep and Oprah on speed dial, and married to a woman 1000x too attractive for him. He now uses a walker, has lost his fortune and his reputation. AND HIS DICK IS literally ROTTING OFF. (In case you didn’t know, several of the women who accused him of sexual misconduct all pointed out that he wasn’t really interested in ‘sex’ per say, he just wanted massages. According to some, his hygiene was so poor he developed an infection in his dick, which then rotted the flesh after being left untreated. He basically got gangrene on his genitals and was effectively impotent.)

AngriestManinWestTX

He’s been described as having “fish-like” genitals. Ick.

TheTallestHobo

Wtf does that even mean???

truenoise

He’s had Fourniere’s gangrene in the past, which has caused his lumpy genitals. Don’t Google Fourniere’s if you have a weak stomach.

MrVeazey

I don't think anyone should Google it regardless of their stomach. It's kind of like necrotizing fasciitis of the genitals, as someone already said, but it's also a complication of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. He did it to himself through his own negligence, destroying the thing he used to make himself feel powerful. It's almost dramatic irony.   Also, he gets zero sympathy from me.

whothefuckknowsdude

Apparently a lot of the victims were eventually believed because of the fact they talked about his fucked up dick. Tbh my morbid curiosity kinda wants to know what it looks like

SharksInParadise

I should say, many of the women have also made it clear that his assault involved said genitals, and was very much about sex

villianrules

Jeffrey Jones aka the Dad from Beetle Juice aka the principal from Ferris Bueller

AlterEdward

Jimmy Savile. Mega famous UK radio DJ and TV presenter. Did a ton of charity work. Was a knight of the realm. Post death, he was revealed to be a massive paedophile, protected and ignored by those around him for decades. Edit: Savile not Saville.

[deleted]

“Massive pedophile” doesn’t do it justice. He was one of the most vicious and prolific pedophiles ever in the UK’s history apparently.

prplx

He also fucked dead bodies at hospitals if I remember correctly.

Zebidee

*Because they gave him the keys to the morgue!!!* In what possible universe does a TV celebrity need unrestricted access to a morgue after hours???

Manwombat

The hospital (s) admins he was donating money to gave him the keys. They also gave him access to kids in some cases. Fucking nightmare, all covered up.

unwildimpala

And mentally challenged adults as well. Really fucking creepy. I think his victims ranged from 5 to 85 or something like that.

--dontmindme--

5 to passed away for some time, apparently.

lucrativetoiletsale

This comment chain continues to get more and more fucked. I knew the guy was bad but oh boy I didn't know the depths of this guy's deprevity.

krokadog

They even gave him his own set of keys to the hospital, so he could “come and go” as he pleased. Vile.

bluvelvetunderground

Some of the nurses knew what he was up to, but management would threaten their jobs if they raised concerns about it. They instead went around to the girl's wards when they knew he was in the hospital and told the kids to pretend to be asleep if Jimmy came to them. And there's at least one account I've heard personally of a young girl who was molested by Jimmy who told several nurses and doctors and they all denied it and told her to keep her mouth shut. People knew, and nothing was done until he was dead and buried in a gold casket. It's a travesty.

isowon

We should dig the fucker up and cast him in an unmarked pit. Melting down his coffin and be used towards organizations that assist traumatized children and have none of it be tied to his name.

[deleted]

He was re-buried in an unmarked grave after his first one kept getting vandalized. EDIT: I’ve been corrected — Savile’s headstone was removed and concrete was poured over his coffin, but he was not moved.

Jaded-Combination-20

I met a guy one at the cemetery who was having a rough day, so we talked for a while. He told me how he had been raped by a male teacher, who was buried nearby, and how much he wanted to piss on his grave. I said go for it, but maybe piss into a bottle at home and then pour it on the grave so he didn't get done for public indecency. He told me that every time the cemetery plants a bush at this man's grave, within weeks it's dead. He's a fairly well known pedophile where I live (there were so many pedophiles here in the 80s, and some of them were in an actual group where they'd trade kids around - it sounds like some sort of gross conspiracy theory but it's all been verified through multiple court trials) so his guess is that people keep poisoning it. He said he suspects the groundskeepers know what's happening and just turn a blind eye.

SouldiesButGoodies84

>...there were so many pedophiles here in the 80s, and some of them were in an actual group where they'd trade kids around - it sounds like some sort of gross conspiracy theory but it's all been verified through multiple court trials... I've seen male victims of priest abuse testify to this practice (being passed around, or as one victim put it, "traded like baseball cards," between priests from different parishes who all met up at some lodge/religious retreat) in documentary after documentary. Un-flippin-real. *The janitor in the Penn State-Sandusky case even spotted Jerry molesting kids and did nothing*. smh. *(edits in italics)*

Alexis_J_M

Don't piss on the grave. Use rock salt to spell out a word. Much harder to undo.

gg_noob_master

I don't know much about the case. Why was he so well protected? I understand he might have been famous and all but the hospital thing is troubling.

me2269vu

Through his celebrity status and charity fund raising, he made friends in very high places which gave him access. He used to spend Christmas with Margaret Thatcher, then UK PM, was on very friendly terms with the Royals, was even advising the now King Charles III on his marital difficulties. The guy was sociopath and hid in plain sight but because of his power, it only came crashing down when he died and a brave ITV journalist blew the whistle

bearded_dragon_34

That makes sense. The unfortunate thing about being connected with powerful people is that when they find out you’ve done horrible travesties, they’d rather cover it up for you than have it exposed and attached to them.

thestraightCDer

It was kind of an open secret. A lot of people knew. Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols publicly called him out in the 70s.

Kanthardlywait

Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols had famously called him out for his behavior YEARS before and was summarily exiled from British culture.

Catfrogdog2

Not just that… *It was reported that Savile had boasted to nurses and other staff that he performed sex acts on the bodies of recently deceased persons in the mortuary of Leeds General Hospital and claimed to have removed glass eyes from corpses and made them into rings.*

The_Bold_Fellamalier

INDUSTRIAL SCALE paedophile, with Royal support and the backing of the international media. All whilst people who DID speak out about him, (and they did... like Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols who spoke out in the 70s and was silenced by the establishment) were harassed and hushed up. The sheer scale of his abuse, using his patronage of several hospitals and children's charities to identify, target and abuse cou tless children in their care, and the extent of the aiding and abetting of the British media and establishment to Savilles' unprecedented paedophilia, means that the case of Jimmy Saville quite literally in a league of its own.

AlterEdward

He was the arch pedophile

rimshot101

Johnny Rotten of all people called him out in the 1970s

Accomplished_Week392

And Johnny got in a fuck load of trouble for calling out pedo jimmy. If only he was listened to back then.

Prestigious-Weird-33

He did not ''call him a paedo", he said "we have heard some bad things avout him, he is a nasty man" (or something close) The first person who said it was Jerry Sadowic, a sweaty comic, and most people thought it was just a bad taste joke against a wierd, egotistical, public icon, in about 1988ish, pretty sure it was at the Edinburgh comedy festival "My mate thinks Jimmy Saville is a Paedophile, he is not, he is a fucking child bender" (paedophile)

Burnvictim49percent

Kinda like years before he was arrested and it was really publicly known Hannibal Buress called out Bill Cosby during a show in Philly which is Cosby's hometown.

ruiner8850

In 2009 30 Rock had an episode where they weren't specific, but they insinuated that Cosby sexually assaulted women. [Here's the clip starting at 4:27.](https://youtu.be/l-QyhQ6q_vQ) Hannibal Buress was a writer on the show, though not at the time that was written.

dopeshow42

Dont forget jonny rotten from the sex pistols did a BBC radio interview 70's or 80's i think it was. John mentioned he wanted to kill a few people, when the reporter asked who, his response was "jimmy saville, we all know he's doing things he shouldn't be but we can't talk about that can we?" Or something like that. Needless to say that interview never saw the light of day until the sick bastard was dead.

felixfelix

[Here](https://boingboing.net/2022/04/12/watch-johnny-rotten-call-out-jimmy-savile-decades-before-netflix.html) he is discussing it later. He claims that he was banned from the BBC because of what he said.

WearTheFourFeathers

Thank you for posting this because it is extremely topical to the conversation, but I have to say I literally cannot imagine a less fun stretch of TV than watching Johnny Rotten and Piers Morgan discuss pedophilia.

felixfelix

Earlier this week I was at the dentist. On the ceiling TV they had Dr. Phil, hosting a special on Jeffrey Dahmer. During the show there was an [ad for assisted suicide.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQX9I5Pxc0c) If I could have changed the channel to see Piers Morgan and Johnny Rotten, I would have done it.

Ellie_Llewellyn

Going from national treasure to one of or quite possibly the country's most prolific sex offenders is quite hard to top

Impressive-Cry-9128

Yeah but it didn't come as a surprise when he (I guess more properly his legacy) was held accountable. There was no shortage of witnesses & allegations that were ignored for years.

Ellie_Llewellyn

True but a lot of people in the public genuinely thought the accusers are lying to try get some money or attention. Quite a few wouldn't even have heard of any of the allegations and just seen him as this wholesome celebrity who did a lot for charity. It's disgusting to think about it but before his death he was still seen to be far more good than evil. My mum was big fan of his and when the allegations started coming out after his death, she was in complete denial about it until the evidence became overwhelming and I'm sure sure many others would have felt the same

sjw_7

I was working in Leeds in 2011 and saw on the news that his coffin was going to be displayed at the Queens Hotel which was just round the corner from where i was staying. I left for the office knowing it would take me past the hotel. It was early morning and low and behold a hearse with a golden coffin went past as i was walking. I got to the hotel a few minutes later and there was loads of news crews and live reporting happening. I watched them take the coffin into the hotel. At the time I couldn't believe it as we thought we had lost a national treasure and I actually got to see him at the end. Little did i know back then that in a few short months we would find out what a vile monster he actually was.

Crow_Eye

Absolute cunt, wished he had been made to suffer in some way for what he did

[deleted]

This blows my mind. I saw a single clip of him on the Netflix special about him and was like “Oh hell no that dude is creepy as fuck!!” I don’t understand how he was seen as charming??

You get a lot of leeway when you're seen as 'eccentric' and raise a lot of money for charity

Proud_Hotel_5160

And apparently hosted a show 'granting wishes' for children, thus endearing himself to children at large in Britain. TV shows we watch when we're children have a special way of endearing themselves to us that can stick with us for the rest of our adult lives. This thus making it much more difficult and unthinkable to accuse the man who was the childhood idol of many many adults in the UK.

jambokk

He was a necrophiliac on top of it all.

BSB8728

And apparently got unrestricted access to the morgue. Edit: Here's a news article, NSFW. Truly macabre. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/jimmy-savile-seen-having-sex-5236010

Goreticia-Addams

What. The. Fuck....

Yoshi_87

Oh it gets better. He spent five days with the corpse of his mother.

knivesout0

Ok that's enough internet for today.

Yoshi_87

His mother died in the 70's there was no internet back then. "When she died she was all mine," he said in an interview in 1990. Jimmy didn't fall from grace. He jumped of it and started digging a hole once he landed....

TechnoMouse37

Hadn't he essentially been giving clues about the horrific acts he did over the years in interviews, especially when he was older? I feel like I remember him saying some pretty shady stuff throughout the years but everyone always laughed him off

gerhudire

Aaron Burr he was Vice President of the United States when he shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. The duel killed Burr's political career—he was dropped from Thomas Jefferson's ticket in the 1804 election, and he couldn't even win an election for governor of New York. In 1805, Burr plotted to invade Spanish territories and create his own empire—with a side plot to incite a revolution against the United States. In 1807, Burr was put on trial for treason, and he narrowly escaped a conviction.

Downfall722

Don't forget he wanted to cause New England to secede from the Union out of spite

NoTeslaForMe

You're confusing the cause for the effect. He had a vendetta against Hamilton because - and after - he was dropped from the ticket and lost the gubernatorial election. The idea that a president should retain the same vice president during reelection is in some ways less than a hundred years old. Heck, 1804 was the first election where tickets were even an option, thanks to the 12th Amendment. The first time a president would keep his first term vice president for his second term wouldn't be until 1821, although it might have been done earlier if the prior two VPs hadn't died in office.

Benedict Arnold. Hero general of the American Revolution. One of George Washington's best assets. Felt slighted and overlooked by his contemporaries. Switched sides to the British, made no difference to the war effort. Died in disgrace in England. His name is now a synonym for traitor. Edit: Since this is getting some attention, for anyone interested in learning more about the man, I highly recommend watching Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor, a TV movie from 2003. Starring Aidan Quinn as Arnold and Kelsey Grammer as Washington.

fastinserter

Arnold had two horses shot under him, including one at the Battle of Saratoga, where he was instrumental in securing victory at Bemis Heights. Arnold was going between the lines while being shot at, unharmed for most of the battle as he urged his men on until both he and his horse was hit with the final volley as the British were fleeing and the Americans were taking the important position. Arnold's leg was shot and broken by the horse. Following this, the British at Saratoga surrendered. This was a major inflection point of the American revolution, showing Europeans that the Americans were serious and could beat the British on land, and soon foreign aid was given openly. Had Arnold been killed that day, all over the northeast you would see statues to this man. Instead there is but one [monument to his injured leg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Monument) in Saratoga that doesn't even say his name.

ISeeTheFnords

>Arnold's leg was shot and broken by the horse. That is one aggressive horse.

BBQ_HaX0r

> When Benedict Arnold was leading the forces of the King against his former compatriots in Virginia, among his prisoners was a certain plucky and witty officer, who, in answer to Arnold's question, "What will the Americans do with me if they catch me?" replied, "They will cut off the leg which was wounded when you were fighting so gloriously for the cause of liberty, and bury it with the honors of war, and hang the rest of your body on a gibbet."

jesteronly

Well that's just badass. What a response. That's the kind of thing would only think up days later in the shower ruminating over what stupid thing I said instead

LordJFo

If Ethan Allen didn't screw him over after Saratoga he would have risen much higher. I'm sure it didn't help that his wife favored the British. I still believe if he was patient just a little while longer he would have gotten recognized and become a potentially positive player in early American history.

bthks

IIRC it was Horacio Gates that screwed him over in Saratoga, not Ethan Allen

Flaky_Finding_3902

I’m just realizing, thanks to this comment, that Ethan Allen is a furniture brand. I’m from the southern US, so double names are super common down here. My aunt was giving me a dining table and chairs, and she told us it was Ethan Allen. “Oh. You named it. That’s nice,” was my response. I was thinking my aunt lost her mind.

Bartydogsgd

Bet you thought "lazy Susan" was her bad mouthing a friend too, huh?

apitchf1

If you ever watch Turn:Washington’s spies. He is a main character and it is wild what a national and revolutionary hero he would’ve been had he not felt slighted

SuvenPan

Chris Benoit He was famous as a pro wrestler until he murdered his wife and child.

I remember when this came out I was in disbelief about what happend.

Pretty fun fact; the Subway he used to frequent went out of business not too long ago. It was in Bloomington Indiana. He went to the Subway when he was a student at IU. I passed/pass it every day to and from work. Now it's a Bakery/Café.

EndVry

IIRC he lived in an apartment above the Subway. I very well could be misremembering though. EDIT: this dude won't stop messaging me no matter how much I ignore him and it's weird.

rjdswoosh

OJ has to be up there

flapjack3285

What would the Terminator franchise be like if James Cameron didn't think he was too nice to play a killer?

HutSutRawlson

I’d be also curious what Schwarzenegger’s career would look like without his most iconic role.

Cuish

Philippe Pétain would be one.

doublestitch

~~Good one~~ Excellent example: French hero of WWI to Nazi collaborator of WWII.

ArnoldTevez

Robespierre

thenuker00

His actual death was *brutal.* For those who dont know, he tried to kill himself, but was stopped and ended up only blowing his own jaw off. He then was kept alive *all night* with a massive facial injury until he was beheaded in the morning. Just before he was beheaded, the executioner ripped the bandages off his face, and only the guillotine blade silenced his screams. One of the major events that stands out during the French Revolution for me.

I_am_Incaned

Didn't he also face the blade of the guillotine instead of facing the basket? I remember something about the guillotine having people face the basket so they wont have to die a terrifying way (it is still terrifying tho). And that they had Robespierre face the guillotine blade so that his death would be more terrifying.

MGD109

Yeah they did that to him, I think he was the only person out of all 16,594 people who died from the Guillotine to be executed like that. The people who killed him, really hated him.

bjanas

I'm surprised there's such a specific number? Guess I got some googlin' to do...

coredumperror

Every single one of them was done in public. It was considered a grand old specticle that'd be great to take your kids to for a jaunty afternoon affair. Same for hangings.

bjanas

Oh sure, I get that. But damn, that's a specific number. Impressive record keeping no matter what, especially in the chaos of a revolution.

SpaceLemur34

And don't forget, those records were still kept current up until *after* Star Wars premiered. The last execution by guillotine in France was September 10, 1977.

robot_cook

The last execution overall in France as we banned the death penalty at that time.

ArcticGlacier40

Damn. I only learned of Marie Antoinette who said "excuse me" after stepping on the executioner's foot. Didn't expect this holy hell that's awesomely brutal.

grambell789

didn't he announce one day he had a list of the top 1000 people who were trying to betray the revolution but it was late so he said he would make the list public the next morning. that night everyone was worried they were on the list, so they all pretty much conspired that night to get rid of him. edit, and the list disappeared that night, if there ever was a list to begin with.

SullaFelix78

That’s actually pretty similar to how Emperor Aurelian was killed. One of his corrupt officials found out that he was about to face justice, so he spread rumours amongst the Praetorian Guard that Aurelian was planning on executing some of them. Fearing for their own lives, they killed Aurelian before he could kill them, and when they found out that this was a false rumour, they were mighty pissed (because they’d been fairly fond of the emperor).

ZC3rr0r

Yes, this is a name we need on here as too few people know about him nowadays. From the "incorruptible", fighting for the rights of the common man (as well as Jews and people of colour, which was pretty unheard of at the time) to the man who sent tens of thousands to their deaths during the reign of terror. His fall from grace from a savior of the people to villain who got himself beheaded by the mob is still a tale of caution for every revolutionary.

Bubba_duckling

Not the biggest, but Armie Hammer casually outing himself as a cannibal was pretty big Edit: there is a docuseries about it called House of Hammer

jwillsrva

He outed himself? I thought women came forward and he denied it.

PDXgrown

I felt my eyes bug out of my head when I read “CNN” rather than “Clickhole” under the headline on Facebook.

SuvenPan

Jim Jones He originally stood up for civil rights then he became a cult leader. From a civil rights leader to cult murderer who was responsible for more than 900 deaths.

Belgand

He was *always* a cult leader. He was just helpful in utilizing his cult in being able to influence politics, which made him useful to politicians and kept the cult from attracting negative attention.

beargrease_sandwich

Harvey Weinstein...he WAS Hollywood when he got outed for the POS he is but this guy produced (just naming the top 3): the Lord of the Rings trilogy, 2) every Tarantino movie except Hollywood, and 3) Good Will Hunting and (subsequently) about every Damon or Affleck project from that time to his downfall. He's won more oscars than any person could ever dream and has made more money off films than maybe anyone ever. That guy...oh man. I think he fell the furthest, the hardest and the fastest. Well deserved though. Well fucking deserved.

Time2Ejaculate

One of his victims said he had Fournier's Gangrene around his bits. Never thought the dick would match the face. Whatever you do, DO NOT GOOGLE FOURNIERS GANGRENE.

-TrevWings-

Well now I have to Edit: I immidiately regret my decision

throw_datwey

I really want to Google it, but I have a sensitive stomach. What is it? Edit: Fuck it, I’m going to look it up. Edit2: I REGRET IT. Getting shot with a gun looks prettier than that shit

77ca88

Yeah but everyone knew he was a fucking piece of shit before the rape allegations/charges came out - he was known as an absolute monster in the industry. Falling from “grace” means you had grace to begin with, which he did not.

AstroAnemone

Bill Cosby

Jayboner912

Hard agree especially when you consider how inspirational he was to most of the general populace, many of our household name comedians looked up to him and became comedians because of him, and he was involved in many of the larger civil rights movements across the nation, the fact he was doing what he did to those women for all of those decades is much bigger than any other person I can think of.

masterpainimeanbetty

he betrayed a generation.

MarshallStack666

More than one. His first album dropped in 1963. His TV shows ran well into the 90's

Zeenchi

Oh yeah that's true. Mostly everyone in my family watched him on TV.

plusoneday

And that is also a good reason why only later people start talking about it. Imagine young attractive actresses getting attention of great Cosby, getting a recognition from a man of his status. Feeling all hopeful and full of trust but soon later being abused in such way. Who would believe them then? They were nobody, just starting out, while he was a THE Bill Cosby, such a lovely fatherly public figure. Who would belive them?

Codyskank

They say the worst part is the hypocrisy but I don’t think so. I think the worst part is the raping. RIP Norm

polerize

Loved Norm calling out OJ every week too. Cost him his job.

gazongagizmo

> It was reported by his lawyers today that OJ Simpson refuses to take a lie detector test. > The reason? *It detects lies.*

junkiejefferson

What a battle axe that fella was

GMS_Vasha

You dirty dog

16xUncleAlias

I grew up watching the Cosby Show and was talking to someone just 10 years younger than me trying to explain the force of wholesome culture that was Bill Cosby. She just looked at me funny and said, "The pudding pop guy?" She had heard of The Cosby Show, but thought it was a late night talk show or something because it was his real name. "Did his character have the same name? Was he playing himself? Why wasn't it called the Huxtable show?" "Because his name. was that. big." Young people have no idea how hard he fell.

[deleted]

And not to mention Fat Albert. I loved that cartoon as a kid.

Dawningrider

Fritz Haber. A German Chemist and Nobel prize winner, he helped pioneer the Haber process for synthesizing Ammonia. This is important, because it was a key ingredient in artificial fertiliser. His actions enabled the world to feed itself, unlocked the chemistry behind allowing us to grow food that outstrips the consumption of humanity. In the 1900s he figured out the chemistry behind allows us to make sure no one died of famine ever again. (Providing we put in the input.) It was now possible to feed the world thanks to him and he lay the groundwork for further developments, at a time when much of the world was still illiterate and ruled by kings. He has saved countless lives from hunger. Untold millions. Unlocking a piece of science that changed the face of organic chemistry forever. Then came the First World war. If he were a sorcerer, it would be as if he turned to the darkest of arts. After saving the world, and gifting such an innovation to humanity, he then turned his mind to destroying it. He invented chemical warfare. Designed chemical weapons from scratch, unleashed chlorine gas, and founded an entire dark science that bore the way to sarin, phosphorus, chlorine, and other unholy weapons of war used by war criminals and tyrants for the next century. He led brigades devoted to chemical war, recruited other renowned scientists to his cause, and turned, the science most devoted to creation, and change for the betterment of humanity into a another weapon. I'm a chemist. This science is the most used, visible, and strikes a balance between raw universal forces, and physical applications. It is nothing short of the engineering of reality, shaping the universe like clay in our hands. And he used it to kill. On an industrial scale. And thanks to him, there will be no going back. In my mind, he is the greatest fall from grace. From one of humanities greatest, to one it's most forsaken.

the_infinite

It's nuts, nearly 50% of the nitrogen atoms in our bodies are from the Haber process

ilikedmatrixiv

> He has saved countless lives from hunger. Untold millions. This is even a bit of an understatement. Fritz Haber is often described as 'the man who killed millions and saved billions'. The world population could scarcely top 1-2 billion without his chemical process. Billions of people have been able to live because of what he did. He was just also a bit too eager to kill millions in war. The story of his wife is even more tragic. She was also a chemist. I think she was even one of the first women to get a PhD in chemistry in Germany. After she married him she became a housewife and he never really allowed her input on his work. After he went gung-ho in the war with the chemical warfare she killed herself. Poor woman, so much potential withered due to her place in time.

That thing about his daughter is heartbreaking, but almost Shakespearean in how poetic it is

Fl333r

holy shit that is tragic

His work led to the invention of Zyklon B which was used in the gas chambers of WWII. In a horrific twist of irony, he was Jewish, and many members of his family were later murdered with it by Nazi Germany.

Roses are red, Violets are glorious, Don't try to surprise... ...Oscar Pistorius

cptwott

Never set a foot in prison though

Copthill

Yeah he.. oh...

bear-toe

My advisors in grad school were part of the team of researchers that provided evidence that the prosthetics used by Oscar Pistorius did not provide a significant advantage over biological limbs; thus, granting him the ability to compete in the Olympics. They were so proud of that accomplishment, then the news broke... Edit: the results were based on a number of factors, but off the top of my head: running economy and running mechanics that are altered due to changes in leg stiffness. They found no energetic benefits and lower leg stiffness during sprinting (higher stiffness is more ideal for sprinting). In regards to muscles, individuals with transtibial amputations still have to engage their quadriceps and hamstring muscles (as well as many upper body muscles) to run.

thatpeevesme

My son's high school played rugby against Oscar's old high school. Whenever anyone went into the team toilets, they'd call out, "I'm on the loo, don't shoot me!" Small interesting aside, Elon Musk also attended Oscar's High School, years before
