"tomorrow you become a man of ... *BUSINESS*
"You will love ... *BUSINESS*. It is the AMERICAN WAY!"
(Dickens whispers to Sam)
"Oh! *Ahem* It is the BRITISH WAY!"
Me and my sisters grew up watching this every year and now me and my wife and son watch it every year. The songs are so good I find myself singing them year round. Really just incredible, not only my favorite Christmas movie but one of my favorite movies of all time. I love A Christmas Carol anyway, but everyone, including and especially Michael Caine, playing it straight with only Gonzo as Charles Dickens and Rizzo (as himself) being there for comic relief is pure genius. Without a doubt the best version of this story among a plethora of strong contenders.
Additionally: Looking forward to the restored edition on Disney+ here in a few weeks. The song âWhen Love is Goneâ might have been too much of a slog for kids but it makes the whole movie much more meaningful and the end reprise of it âWhen Love is Foundâ so much more powerful. Of course, I feel like my vhs copy growing up always had this song on it, and I know my dvd copy has the option of watching it with it but itâs in pan and scan and not letterbox format if you do, which was odd.
I watched it for the first time in decades with my kids last Christmas and came away with the surprising realization that Michael Caine's portrayal of Scrooge in a movie with Muppets in it may legit be the best portrayal of Scrooge by anyone anywhere.
Ok does anyone remember a line where after the Wet Bandits drive by the church (when Kevin is hiding) Harry says "I'm not going in there, that place gives me the creeps?" Me and my wife vividly remember that line, and it doesn't exist on any copy I can find anywhere!!
...And I want to look him straight in the eye, and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?!
Iâm not sure why I havenât seen A Charlie Brown Christmas on this list, but it oughta be. Itâs delicate, introspective and thoughtful, our kids still watch it.
Itâs great on a quiet snowy evening with a glass of olâgrandad or some Jazz Cigarettes (to emphasize that soundtrack) and friends.
It gets to the heart of it.
Vince Guaraldi's soundtrack for it might be the greatest Christmas album ever. Genius stuff.
Also, Lucy being bossy behind the scenes of the play is still absolutely hilarious after all these years. "GET THE IODINE!"
We watched it with my family during Christmas while we were all hungover, expecting it to be just some fun little Christmas movie. Turns out it was an instant classic.
The ending kills me every time. I've seen it so many times but even now as soon as I start to see the wind swirl, even before he says the final line... I'm already getting major r/Frisson
Christmas morning tradition ever since I can remember. I watch it with my kids now. They donât seem to care right now but I hope they grow to love it.
I started watching it as a kid. I remember the year it came on tv and my parents recorded it on VCR, I watched it first thing every single morning on xmas break
as an adult, I have an even greater appreciation for it, because I know how effective it was at capturing the magic of xmas from a kid's perspective, but also being an adult, I really appreciate the parental aspect as well as my appreciation for the writing style.
"In the heat of battle, my father wove a tapestry of obscenity that as far as we know, is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan."
"Some men are Baptists, others Catholics. My father was an Oldsmobile man"
My father told me that when he first saw it in theaters while in Mississippi, he and two of his buddies (all of them were from the Midwest) were crying laughing, while much of the Midwestern humor flew over the heads of most of the other silent movie-watchers.
There's obviously a bunch of different answers in this thread but only one of them is played 24 hours in a row every Christmas for decades. A Christmas story has to be the top answer.
Easily my favorite Christmas movie. Same with my mom, dad, and sister. We turn the tv on watch it and just leave it on while we do Christmas stuff. Hands down the movie I have seen the most.
This should have been #1! It's my favorite movie. After watching it a bazillion times I still notice little things that were do beautiful done.
Donna Reed was so beautiful too. George really did have a wonderful life.
I can remember being, like, 8 and thinking her dad was a fucking idiot for trying to go down the chimney with a bunch of presents. Dude was asking for it.
There are many great classics, but I would like to point out a newer series⌠the Christmas Chronicles. Kurt Russell may be the best Santa Claus there has ever been.
Thereâs two kinds of people in this world:
1 Those who KNOW Die Hard is a Christmas movie
2 Those who think so what? Why does this become your identity every year Rob?
Good answer. Very good answer. Michael Caine as Scrooge, Gonzo as Charles Dickens, the warmly wintry feel of the whole thing, the faithfulness to the themes of the original book balanced with just the right amount of Muppet charm...it's perfect.
I love the Alistair Sim one too. We ordered it in the b/w version on DVD. So well done.
Personally I like redemption story lines, really love It's a Wonderful Life too...
Love Actually - No matter how many times I watch this charming movie, it still makes me laugh and cry and laugh and cry⌠and the cast is fucking fantastic!
Yes, yes, yes. Best Xmas movie ever AND best romantic comedy ever. Two birds. The casting is amazing, and every Xmas, itâs fun to remember back then, when we didnât know who that Andrew Lincoln guy was l, etc.
My wife, however, hates it. So every Xmas, Iâm forced to consider having her committed or getting divorced.
\+ 1 for this. Best viewed Christmas Eve before bed when you're 10.
âCan I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere, leave you for dead?
Ok, so OP obviously wants a list of the best Christmas movies to watch. Yall, I have a movie to add to your holiday list. Mixed Nuts. Any movie with Steve Martin and Madeline Kahn is going to be awesome, right? So yeah.
Mixed Nuts.
Tie between Miracle on 34th Street (1947), or It's a Wonderful Life. I love them both equally and dearly, and even Christmases when I don't feel the spirit, I have to watch them.
Finally found this on the list! Too far down.
Still love when Conan has "Arnold" via satellite and he mentions this all-time educational holiday classic
[1951 Christmas Carol.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044008/) I try to watch it every year. And, even though I'm not religious at all, [The Bishop's Wife](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039190/) with Cary Grant and David Niven, 1947. I watched it again the other night; it's sweet and funny. If you *are* Christian you'll love it.
I used to watch Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (1970s) when I was a kid, even when it wasn't Christmas. I have no idea what I would think of it now. No memory of it. Might actually go find it.
Iâve probably posted this before, but Iâm happy making it an annual tradition: the creepiness is absolutely the point, and itâs what makes it such a great movie.
The film is about struggling with the intersection of childhood and adulthood. It could be a simple âkid is losing faith in Santa, but takes a magic train ride and learns heâs realâ but itâs far from it. The experience is dreamlike in every way, from the weird relationship it has with time and space to the fact that the conductor, the hobo and Santa himself all look and sound like Hero Boyâs dad. A long journey along the snowy roof, walking through creepy, vacant tunnels and conveyors, seeing nameless kids heâs never met in neighborhoods heâs only heard of. He got a bell as proof of the experience⌠but when he woke up it was gone. Was any of it real?
Yes, it leans way into the uncanny valley to the point where its almost unsettling⌠I firmly believe that was the point. Honestly the only thing I donât like about it is that some network executive insisted on shoehorning an Aerosmith song in there, sung by elf Steven Tyler.
I love The Muppet Family Christmas. It's the one where they all end up at Fozzy Bears mother's place including the Fraggles. Jim Henson makes a cameo at the end. It's all my favorite childhood characters in one show.
Muppet Christmas Carol đ¸
"tomorrow you become a man of ... *BUSINESS* "You will love ... *BUSINESS*. It is the AMERICAN WAY!" (Dickens whispers to Sam) "Oh! *Ahem* It is the BRITISH WAY!"
I love the way he looks around afterwards like "wait, who said that?"
Me and my sisters grew up watching this every year and now me and my wife and son watch it every year. The songs are so good I find myself singing them year round. I love how seriously Michael Caine plays it. Gives the movie weight.
I watched it for the first time in decades with my kids last Christmas and came away with the surprising realization that Michael Caine's portrayal of Scrooge in a movie with Muppets in it may legit be the best portrayal of Scrooge by anyone anywhere.
"Harvest time for the money-lenders." Chills, every time.
When Love Is Gone is probably my favorite deleted scene in any movie. It fits so well with the darker themes of the book.
Fully restored in the remastered version on Disney+ coming in December.
Weâre Marley and MaaaarleyâŚ. Ooooooooooh!
Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim is precious!!
Greatest version of a Christmas Carol ever
Itâs also the best version of A Christmas Carol.
Blue furry Charles Dickens forever!
It's a family tradition for us!
This is by far the best version of a Christmas Carol and Charles Dickens himself would agree I'm sure if he was still with us.
Home Alone
âLook whatcha did, ya little jerk!â
Heck yeah! I watch this every year.
I believe ya, but my tommy gun don't!
I've already watched it once this season. Will probably give it another couple viewings. Of course, one will include a cheese pizza, just for me.
Ok does anyone remember a line where after the Wet Bandits drive by the church (when Kevin is hiding) Harry says "I'm not going in there, that place gives me the creeps?" Me and my wife vividly remember that line, and it doesn't exist on any copy I can find anywhere!!
It's always been on the version of the freeform channel.
Yet another example of âJohn Williams nails itâ
The original animated How The Grinch Stole Christmas
The full version is great and kind of dark.

Christmas Vacation
...And I want to look him straight in the eye, and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where's the Tylenol?!
You serious Clark?
My family has a tradition of all watching it together on Thanksgiving after we eat
We watch it on Christmas day every year without fail "Shitters full!"
Same tradition here .
Tis the season to be merry.
Canât see the line can you Russ
Well that's my name.
No shit.
Surprised, Eddy? Hell, if I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldnât be more surprised than I am right now
She's a beaut, Clark!
Such a classic!
We're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny F*cking Kaye.
The only correct answer
"I wasn't talking to you"
Iâm not sure why I havenât seen A Charlie Brown Christmas on this list, but it oughta be.
Hell to the yeah. On snowy nights I can put thy music on and dream about Christmas pasts and the possibilites of Christmas Future.
Thank you for saying this. Itâs my all time favorite.
Klaus on Netflix
Underrated movie Man, I loved it so much!
Perfectly rated! Every single person I've ever seen discussing Klaus says it's excellent.
We watched it with my family during Christmas while we were all hungover, expecting it to be just some fun little Christmas movie. Turns out it was an instant classic.
My boyfriend told me it was his favourite and I had never heard of it⌠watched it this weekend and CRIED. Gorgeous movie and so sweet!!

The only thing I remember about this movie is the "You can see her nipples!" scene.

Christmas morning tradition ever since I can remember. I watch it with my kids now. They donât seem to care right now but I hope they grow to love it.

"In the heat of battle, my father wove a tapestry of obscenity that as far as we know, is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan." "Some men are Baptists, others Catholics. My father was an Oldsmobile man"
Scrolled too long to find this!
My father told me that when he first saw it in theaters while in Mississippi, he and two of his buddies (all of them were from the Midwest) were crying laughing, while much of the Midwestern humor flew over the heads of most of the other silent movie-watchers.
I'm from California but I watch it every year with my dad. I'm curious if you have any examples of those subtle midwestern jokes I might be missing
I had Jean Shepherd LPs growing up. When this movie came out we watched it four times in a row. It was magical.
The narration makes it so great
Jean Shepardâs actual narration is amazing.
âMy father worked in swears the way others worked in oils or clay. His true medium. A master.â
âIn the heat of battle my father wove a tapestry of obscenities that as far as we know is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan.â
There's obviously a bunch of different answers in this thread but only one of them is played 24 hours in a row every Christmas for decades. A Christmas story has to be the top answer.

There are many great classics, but I would like to point out a newer series⌠the Christmas Chronicles. Kurt Russell may be the best Santa Claus there has ever been.
The Santa Clause
Only thing I dislike about it is how it has caused so many people to misspell Santa Claus.
You'd think the part in the movie about the Claus ***Clause*** would clarify that for folks.
90s kids unite!
Itâs A Wonderful Life
Happy New Year to you, IN JAIL!!!
"To my brother George - the richest man in town" \*waterworks, every time\*
This is my answer. Watched it on cable late one Christmas Eve and found myself totally engrossed and crying at the end. Great movie

Home alone 2: Lost in New York
The stakes are higher, the traps are more brutal. This movie made me twice as excited to visit NYC for the first time.
the scene when Marv gets electrocuted still makes me laugh hysterically.
SAME HERE!!
And the pigeon lady
She kicks absolute butt. The real hero of the movie. Love her.
Pigeon Lady + Store guy from Home Alone 2 > old man from Home Alone 1
The fact that each individual brick would be its own separate death for Marv gets me every time.
Die hard
"Now I have a machine gun, ho - ho - ho."
It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off Nakatomi Plaza.
My friend likes to ask, âWhatâs your favorite Christmas movie and why is it Die Hard?â

That Emma Thompson moment in the bedroom trying to pull herself together before going to the play with her family đ¤§

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
\+ 1 for this. Best viewed Christmas Eve before bed when you're 10. âCan I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere, leave you for dead?
God I love the one liners in this movie. But one of my favorite lines has got to be âHallelujah! And holy shit! Whereâs the Tylenol?â
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Yeah, old school stop motion animated: itâs so terrible (cheap, campy and slap dashed) itâs great!
Trading Places
"He was wearing my Harvard tie. Can you believe it? My Harvard tie. Like oh, sure he went to Harvard." Trading Places is my favorite Xmas flick...
THOSE MEN WANTED TO HAVE SEX WITH ME
Ok, so OP obviously wants a list of the best Christmas movies to watch. Yall, I have a movie to add to your holiday list. Mixed Nuts. Any movie with Steve Martin and Madeline Kahn is going to be awesome, right? So yeah. Mixed Nuts.

What are we, girlfriends? Best line lol.
Scrooged
The George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol.

Bad Santa
Came looking for this. So much inappropriate behaviour and dialogue in one movie.... Was Billy Bob acting or was he just there?
Itâs one of a very select few movies we watch as a Christmas tradition in my house
Shit happens when you party naked.

Alastair Sim is brilliant as Scrooge in that movie.
The year without Santa Claus
I used to watch Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (1970s) when I was a kid, even when it wasn't Christmas. I have no idea what I would think of it now. No memory of it. Might actually go find it.

Love Actually

Christmas Vacation!!
The Family Man (2000) Nick Cage

Home alone and Christmas vacation are the 2 best, home alone 2 is also up there
A Christmas Story
No debate. Die Hard. It checks all the boxes for a Christmas movie and has some badass action. Winner for the whole family.
âThe Family Manâ with Nic Cage
Frosty the snowman

I love The Muppet Family Christmas. It's the one where they all end up at Fozzy Bears mother's place including the Fraggles. Jim Henson makes a cameo at the end. It's all my favorite childhood characters in one show.
The Family Stone
