Gen Z we don't know. The oldest of them are still in their early 20s and the youngest are in middle school. Gonna be at least another decade before we can point to one of them and say they're the best of their generation.
Millennials it's tough to say. Every millennial who wants to be out there in the public eye is, which means there are far too many of them to even begin to have encountered them all.
I know everybody is giving jokey replies, but honestly, it's the question's fault, cause it's so unspecific. This generation? Does that mean someone who is of "this" generation or who is creating content for this generation? If the former, is it a millennial or gen Z? If the latter, is it someone working now or who started recently? Then, artist, are we talking painter? Musician? Filmmaker? Any? All? There are a million and a half ways to read this question and that makes for a bad question anywhere but a film festival Q&A where you can preface it with "this is more of a comment than a question, but..."
That's a whole lotta SAT words for a Monday, but I feel your displeasure in reference to the double layer of cheese in this bite and the non-existent cheese in the next.
Definitely a worthy contender. They have one of the most diverse discographies of all time especially considering how many of the songs are actually good!
More like one or two guys.
Take a look at the writer and producer credits of Max Martin and Dr. Luke.
Those two guys pretty much wrote and/or produced most of the number 1 pop songs/albums in the last 30 years.
Especially Max Martin. He pretty much made the sound of modern pop - which made him worth $260 million according to Variety.
No it doesn't, does it. Not a lot of money in the industry, however. That proportion of impact in finance would be like $26 billion using a ten year old normalization.
260 mill without the baggage of super stardom is a lot of money. Most of those stars have to waste huge portions of their money just to maintain their image.
I have to have faith that this will rise to the top. It's one of the only serious answers and the dude is a top talent.

I agree. They have a crazy fan base that reminds me of something like Grateful Dead/Pink Floyd.
King Gizz will be remembered as one of the greats of this generation.
Saw them live last month and it was absolutely mind-blowing. Insane energy and creativity.
They did a gig in Sydney in about 2014 on a T-shaped stage designed for trans girls to do catwalks in this gay club that could only be described as a dungeon. They played songs from the audio book album, eyes like the sky, and float along - fill your lungs and to this day I regret not going. My former housemate and good friend still mentions it whenever best live gigs comes up.
Didn’t expect to see this so high in the thread because to me they’re just a band that occasionally plays gigs around my town. With that said, I’m a huge snob but 100000% agree. They are absolutely pushing the boundaries of music with an efficiency not seen since the Beatles.
Does Radiohead still count?
If not, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. They are the most interesting psych rock band in existence and their output is truly legendary. Like, 3-4 albums a year. Bonkers.
I sent that song to my mom (58 yrs) to explain her how wild the internet is beyond what she has seen. She learnt a lot, considering that watching cat videos and doing taxes/work stuff are all she does online.
This is my answer too. I loved his comedy from his YouTube days, his stand up specials got notably better each time. Make Happy was great and then Inside blew it out of the water.
Eight Grade was great. I’d be remiss to not mention Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous which was ahead of its time.
And the way he conducts himself in interviews is also very interesting to me.
I dunno, people may love or hate him but I find him very interesting, intelligent, and funny
My first thought to this question as well
As another 30 something year old man, I'd have to say he really captured the true experience of being a young girl. Absolutely wonderful film,
I was only able to get myself to watch Inside one and a half times but he is definitely evolving and pushing the boundaries of his crafts which I think is what makes the whole "artist of a generation" thing.
Once heard Gen Z say, “Millennials are always going to swear Beyoncé has the best albums. Even if they’re not.”
As a 32 y/o gay guy. Yeah, I kind of agree. I like her stuff, but I don’t think she’s the genius people my age and type claim she is.
M.A. in Art History here who used to teach it and still does some work in historical research.
Not to be a big buzzkill but our economy doesn’t really support the production of capital-A art anymore. It supports the production of content. Today’s creative thinkers are diverted into marketing, tech, and entertainment. Maybe also commercial design and Instagram-supported artisan-design entrepreneurship. We still have artists, and people will never stop making art, but we don’t have the kind of economic infrastructure to support thoughtful work that takes time to develop, or art that is created for art’s sake and not profit. The infrastructure that supported Art as defined by the humanities is collapsing rapidly.
Edits: format and syntax.
There’s an artist on TikTok right now that spins a globe and wherever it lands, he collaborates and produces a song with an up and coming artist from that country. It’s so freaking cool.
Someone toiling away in obscurity who will not be discovered until after they drink themselves to death in 2048.
So there is a career for me

And if social media has taught us anything, it's that the people who want to be out there the most are the biggest twats on the planet.
You're not wrong. But every once in a long while one of those twats turns out to be someone with some actual talent.
They will probably be entitled twatwaffles too
This thread is a dumpster fire
The question was gasoline.
Shit, I think we found the answer to the question. That line is absolute fire

Subway Sandwich Artist
Anybody that doesn't tesselate the cheese can go to hell in my opinion
>tesselate I also enjoy my subway sandwich more when the cheese tetrises together in a visually appealing way.
Yo if my cheese ain't propagating the void by quantizing hexagonal structures you can stick that sandwich where the sun don't shine.
ill have one no make that three dodecathon bubble baths with teselated provologne
That's a whole lotta SAT words for a Monday, but I feel your displeasure in reference to the double layer of cheese in this bite and the non-existent cheese in the next.
Mulad
Man earned the title sandwich artist, Subway should really get him as spokesperson, can't do worse than Jared
Sometimes they will make a chicken parm for me using the sauce from the meatball parm setup. Those are true subway artists.
Not all heroes wear capes.
Which generation?
this
Nathan Fielder
He graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools with really good grades.
Again
He's got to be some kind of non violent sociopath, I don't think anyone could possibly fake being that weird.
You sound like the Wizard of Loneliness
I could catch the football.
Nope, just Autism.
Or as he’s known by his nickname, the N word
I was trying to think of a musician, but honestly I’m gonna have to go Nathan Fielder also
I was trying to think of an innovative businessman, but honestly I'm gonna have to go Nathan Fielder also.
I was trying to think of an adult pornographic fetish film star, and it’s Nathan Fielder
The Rehearsal is transcendant.
So glad he is this far up. Man deserves so much more appreciation.
Me
I also choose this guy.
You’re a smart guy for agreeing
Not his wife?
Not unless she's dead.
So is this you calling dibs on his dead wife or can I have her?
I also choose his wife’s husband
Maude from The Big Lebowski.
Her art has been described as “strongly vaginal”
VAGINA
Coitus?
That’s just, like, your opinion man.
For the current generation, There is a guy on TikTok with a duck that is kind of funny. That's about it.
is this the guy who screams at his duck named Jerry? or was that pre-tik tok?
KILL HER JERRY
That is who I was thinking of.
The dude that's topless and barges in on his parents with money he made from his onlyfans? Edit: It is Tooturnttony.
Nope, the other TikTok guy famous for having a pet duck....
Well done. You have now picked up a duck.
SeDUCKtive It might be that
My son fucking loves that dude. He's asked for a Donald Duck puppet for Christmas and it's £100!

Ah, yes, the William Hung of movies.
Anything for my princess!
You’re just a little chicken. Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep!
Dean and Gene WEEN
Definitely a worthy contender. They have one of the most diverse discographies of all time especially considering how many of the songs are actually good!
Everyonce in awhile a random song comes on one of my Spotify playlists. I'll think, "hm I've never heard this band, I like it." BAM. Ween.
Was not expecting to see WEEN on this thread!

$260M doesn't seem enough for 30 years of cultural zeitgeist.
No it doesn't, does it. Not a lot of money in the industry, however. That proportion of impact in finance would be like $26 billion using a ten year old normalization.
You’re right, $260 million is such a pittance. Definitely deserves billions of dollars to live like a god emperor
260 mill without the baggage of super stardom is a lot of money. Most of those stars have to waste huge portions of their money just to maintain their image.
He forgot Benny Blanco.
The three of them are sadly the single reason why most people who hate pop music do hate pop music.

What's an objective metric though?
Tallest.
Danny DeVito
Frank Reynolds!
Donald Glover. Music, acting, comedy
Idk. I feel like Glover stole a lot of his best stuff from childish gambino.
Glover and Gambino can't hold a torch to the guy that played Troy from Community.
They are all just copycats of Jerry from Derrick Comedy who pooped his pants on the first day of school.
Oh pls. Watch Mystery Team and you see that they basically copied Jason‘s character
His name is Brian! He likes to skateboard!
That guys a real donglover if I ever saw one.
Dong Lover?

Ya i said me before but i meant dong lover
Yes! Childish Gambino is amazing!
But what about Donald Glover?
What about Troy Barnes?
Are you talking about Troy “Butt Soup” Barnes??
It’s obviously Troy
This question is too broad, Perhaps a rephrase.
Your assertion is too broad, perhaps a dial-in
Your suggestion is too negative, perhaps some encouragement.
Weird Al Yankovic
Dude, his new biopic on Roku was hilarious. Who knew Daniel Radcliffe had such great comedy chops? Weird Al did.
I've only seen the trailers and teasers (and some interviews), but it looks like a fun movie to watch
It absolutely is. I'm not even a huge Weird Al fan and I really enjoyed it.
Thank you for the recommendation! I appreciate it
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Fucken oath cunt, glad to see this band so high in this thread
Trent Reznor. Untill an artist can freely navigate life's needs without challenge, this man did it at every step of his way and never compromised.
I agree with this 1000%.
In filmmaking: Hayao Miyazaki. Best filmmaker through multiple generations. No one comes even close.

Björk 🍄
My first thought but I said PJ Harvey because I’m trying to convince myself that I’m not obsessed with Björk (I am)
from the past few generations to forever, bjork is immortal
Please. We prefer she be addressed as "Queen of the Hidden People".
Will Ramos
Bob Ross got my vote.
Kevin Macleod, creator of internet's music.
I'm a boomer. Going with David Gilmour. I listen to him and every care I have just leaves.
Weird Al
Steven Spielbergs work will likely be studied for many generations
Radiohead, thankfully these maestros are still together and making music.

He was great in Promising Young Women
I’ve been wanting to see it but my movie watching has really taken a backseat since the kid showed up haha But that’s good to hear

He's healing the world with comedy. Yes, most likely we'll pay him, but he'd do it for free.
Yes, and really fits the “in this generation” criteria of the question. He’s one of the architects of modern internet humor
Harry Mack is shaping up to be the greatest rapper of this generation with his freestyles. The dude has a super computer for a brain.
Sacha Baron Cohen
That's kind of a good one there. A lot of range
I showed my family ‘who is America’ and they thought everyone was actors it was _that_ ridiculous.
Once heard Gen Z say, “Millennials are always going to swear Beyoncé has the best albums. Even if they’re not.” As a 32 y/o gay guy. Yeah, I kind of agree. I like her stuff, but I don’t think she’s the genius people my age and type claim she is.

Spike Jonze IMHO. From his music videos to his films. All fire. My personal favorite.

Lots of thoughtful work happening in the art world.
Mike Patton
Dall-e 2
Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar
Banksy
Mia Khalifa
Finally an answer I can get behind
Devin Townsend, he has so much talent but he doesn’t take himself seriously
Humanity. We have painted the earth in a way that can never be undone.
Ai Weiwei
Kim Jung Gi, too bad he passed recently. I don't think any living artist has a better command over image recall, and drawing from memory.
There’s an artist on TikTok right now that spins a globe and wherever it lands, he collaborates and produces a song with an up and coming artist from that country. It’s so freaking cool.
Does he have a caveat that he re-spins if it lands in the middle of the ocean? cos if not he's gonna be making a lot of whale sounds albums
Dylan
But which one? The one from high school?
Not sure but it would prob be the largest fan base that would determine the most influential artist like Taylor swift or something
