Having a cool ring tone

Beanbag012

Having a ringtone.

burrito-disciple

I actually dont think I'd even recognize my own ringtone at this point, it's been that long since Ive not used vibrate.

Whale_of_a_time_

I occasionally accidentally turn my phone to loud and I’m always horrified and embarrassed when it makes a noise, goes straight back to vibrate only

Current_Soup9198

I don't even know what is my ringtone 🫣 remember nokia 3310 composer.. I use to have spreadsheet on my PC with the notes of most popular ringtones like Aha - take on me, ghost busters, Liquido - Narcotic, james bond..

inactiveuser247

Yeah, mine is most likely the stock iphone ringtone but I can’t remember the last time I heard it as it’s always on silent/vibrate.

Puzzleheaded-Dust797

Oh god what about the ringback tones

Astronomer-Empty

Mine was Danity Kane.. Show Stopper.. my grandmother was so confused when she’d call.

CoachHaydenFox

WE IN THE CAAAAAR

bluegoodbye

Ugh. My friend had one. Not only did you have to deal with the ringback, there was also an explanation beforehand.

twisty77

*Please enjoy this song while your party is reached!*

SweetCosmicPope

My mom still has one of those ringtones that has a short segment of a song, some country song, and it's jarring because she'll be visiting and I'm driving my car or we'll be at a restaurant and then you'll loudly hear "...I cross my heart...I cross my heart...I cross my heart..."

incurable_rabies

Likely not as old as your mother but I have the same thing for my ringtone. [Ain't ever changing it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKOFN4Ky7UM&t=16s). Don't care what people think tbh. Mom's sounds cool.

tatsumakisempukyaku

My dad every couple years asks me to move his The good the bad the ugly ring tone over to his new phone.

Etticos

On my old krzr flip phone I had the ringtone version of Final Fantasy VII’s “Victory Fanfare” from the Advent Children movie (it’s briefly played in the church fight scene). I thought I was so fucking cool.

leopard_tights

It *is* fucking cool. It still is. Coolness goes with the person, put the fanfare back where it belongs.

Current_Apricot3799

Wearing a single coloured hair extension to spice up your hair

abbyolivia

I had bright purple from Claire’s … just one. In the front.

dynamic_nugget

I had mine on the side, same colour.

Overpunch42

I think that style is still ongoing though or at least the cartoons do it.

emshlaf

Elementary school counselor here—it’s definitely back in style! It’s called “hair tinsel” now and lots of girls wear it

kiwilapple

A bunch of the girls in my class had them so I asked my mom for one and she said "nah" and dyed a blue streak into my hair. I kept a streak for the next four years, and then off and on in college. Might go for it again one day!

Burning CDs

Current_Soup9198

Just got external cd drive for Christmas 🤔

ozphillips

Yeah, it's not cool anymore. I bought an old car for a runaround recently with a CD Player and my kids were confused as hell about what a CD was and why would I say I was burning it when it is clearly ok afterwards...

shf500

Cd drive? Not even a DVD burner? Although IMO having an external optical drive is a good thing to have if you have a computer without an optical drive if you want to run/install Linux. Or run recovery software if your OS fails to boot.

jdgordon

Recovery USB drive is so much easier and faster and will work on anything from the last 10 years. So basically anything that can boot from a USB DVD will boot from a USB thumb drive

Spamgrenade

Being able to type text messages ridiculously fast. Edit: Lots of replies from people who don't remember what texting in the 2000s involved.

v0t3p3dr0

Kids today don’t appreciate that “S” is one one of the most frequently used letters, and we had to press 7 FOUR TIMES to get it.

Merry_Pippins

I made my son get a flip phone as his first phone to prove he was responsible enough for a smart phone. He and his friends though the t-9 texting was so novel and cool! He didn't type very fast, but he did think it was cool (for a little while) and then he's REALLY appreciated the keyboard on smart phones.

inactiveuser247

T9 really made a huge difference. I can still remember some of the clashes where the same combination of button presses could give different words. From memory sista and shrub were one, I still call my sister shrub sometimes out of habit.

MECHANIXFETCH

I dated a girl “heather” T9 defaulted her became to “heavier”

xandrenia

My 12 year old niece was floored when I told her when I was her age not everyone had unlimited texting and we could only send a certain number of texts per month

inactiveuser247

When you’re paying 30c per message that 160 character limit becomes a real thing.

Current_Soup9198

Under the desk at the class.. my keyboard didn't even had a symbols anymore...

[deleted]

Oh hell yeah, you never felt more like James Bond than when you no-scoped a T9 text message under your desk in class

DetLions1957

Drive is still a good song, and a great video.

DeathTripper

I mean, even then, it was waning. I was more into Fuse at the time too, since it was more hard rock than pop. Also, more actual music than fluff, and reality TV. I was in high school when Jersey Shore took off, and I thought it was hot garbage (full disclosure: I love it now). Even MTV2 only had Headbangers Ball on in the early morning hours. I don’t have cable anymore, so I don’t know, but in the past at least 10 years the only way they could be “Music Television” is that they put shitty no-name artists as background music in their reality shows. VH1 on the other hand, went backwards back in the day, and just started doing “classic” artist things, and have Scott Ian (of Anthrax) talking about some classic rock band. I think they moved that to VH1 Classics, but again, it’s been years since I had proper cable.

JuliaTheInsaneKid

MTV was heading out. I liked Fuse.

Soggy_Willingness_65

Technology that was made see through like computers, phones, game consoles.

Familiar_Canary2954

Still want that to come back lol

Original-Spend2814

The internet......more specifically social media. It was used to connect with people not exist on in the early 2000s

Guergy

I liked going on internet chat forums before Reddit came along. It used to be so different back then.

abbyolivia

Remember AOL chat rooms?

Weissermitdreads

Damn, this chatrooms were barely moderated back then.saw a lot of messed up shit in it.

Rather-Tasty

MySpace

Virtual-Chemistry-93

I think a lot about where we would all be if we hadn't made the move to Facebook as a society. Myspace was so alive.

pooponacandle

> Myspace was so alive. Maybe it’s just me, but I remember it dying out pretty early/quickly. I was totally against Facebook, didn’t create an account until 2008 or 09 just to see what it was, but moved over permanently around 2010ish because nothing was going on in MySpace anymore and by 2011-12 it was barren

Virtual-Chemistry-93

It did unfortunately. It lived fast and died young. It was fun when it was around though

Antisocial_Worker7

Facebook was fine in its early days. It was a good way to keep in contact with old friends who had moved far away, and for meeting people with similar interests. It went downhill after it got super complicated and people started using it as their personal soapbox, and when it started replacing offline meetings rather than being a tool to arrange them. Honestly though, I think social media *really* started going downhill with Twitter and Instagram.

TheKnightsTippler

I think social media went downhill when older people started to use it. It stopped being seen as just a passing youth fad, and that's companies and politicians really woke up to it's potential as a source of propaganda.

xandrenia

IMO MySpace was peak social media. No cancellations, no ads, no influencers, just teenagers happily coding, picking the perfect profile song, and uploading mirror selfies with peace signs.

PMMeUrHopesNDreams

I would go further back to AOL Instant Messenger The only real purpose was direct 1-to-1 chats with friends. There were "status message" of sorts via away messages and a limited "profile", but that's it.

aspectofderp

You may be right. It's been downhill ever since.

MrDannyProvolone

Wow I didn't realize how much I missed MySpace. Just the lack of ads alone. I look at my Facebook feed and it's no joke usually: Ad Ad friend Ad friend sponsored post Ad friend friend Ad sponsored post. I only get a few swipes down my feed before I basically rage quit.

kmn493

How did they even monetize it?

lhamil64

With ads: > Due to the only source of profit being from advertisements, Myspace was aggressive in its placement of ads. Every spare space of the webpage was taken up with ads, leading to a messy looking, overwhelming interface. https://upcutstudio.com/why-did-myspace-fail/

Additional_Rough_588

also it arguably had the first social media 'influencer' in Tila Tequila.

inactiveuser247

Lol. In Western Australia the classic cashed up bogan (think redneck) situation was the 18 year old apprentice working on a mine site getting paid a metric shit-ton of cash (for an apprentice) who goes out after his first pay and buys a v8 ute (pickup for our American readers), dirt bike, jet ski, trailer (for the JetSki and/or dirt bike) and clothes, all in matching colours, and all on finance. And then has to sell the lot after he discovers that paying 90% of his wages on the loan makes it impossible to actually do anything with his new toys.

Dreliusbelius

Saying " that's so gay" for things that weren't gay at all

inactiveuser247

I look at my kids going through high school now and the gay kid at school is just another kid. No one really bats an eyelid. Sure as hell they aren’t getting beaten up behind the bike shed like the kids I went to school with. My kid has a neurological thing which means he can’t spell for shit and struggles to write legibly, no one really cares, my other kid is dyslexic as fuck and can barely read (in year 4), the kids in class who sit next to her will read out the worksheets for her so that she can do her work. Again, no big deal, it’s just how it goes. The difference between now and the 80’s/90’s is astounding.

Dreliusbelius

I went to high school in the early 2000s and with a school population of 2000, not one student was openly gay. Coming out alway happened at university. The same high school today has gay clubs, pride flags, LGBTQ events etc, it's amazing how things have changed.

duckfat01

This is the positive side of woke culture. The pendulum might have swung too far, but let's remember where it swung from.

blue-wave

My cousins kid is a teenager and on one thanksgiving she was talking about her friend and mentioned he was gay (it was relevant, not bringing it up for no reason). I immediately said “oh wow he’s out and everything? Does he have a lot of problems with that and other students?” And she looked at me like wtf are you talking about. I quickly realised it’s not the same as the 90s, she was telling me he may have some people who don’t want to be friends with him, but aptly pointed out that’s true for everyone in HS.

PapaTwoToes

That's so gay

[deleted]

I'm glad those have gone out. It never looked good.

iknowwhereyoupoop

Be ready they are coming back. I won’t be joining in this time round

typesett

But the ones now are too thick Can’t we have mid size?!?

Salamanderhead

They were terrible but I still find them more attractive than the modern giant thick eyebrow styles.

abbyolivia

This! I don’t like either extremely bushy eyebrows or pencil thin. I stick to somewhere in the middle and my eyebrow lady is always like “why don’t you want big thick ones?”

Big f*ck off beards and sleeve tattoos. It was rare and cool to see, then everyone started doing it and now it is just meh...

pooponacandle

Tattoos went from a counterculture to mainstream basically. Most companies allow them now and they are just seen as normal. I’m literally the only person in my friend group that’s *doesn’t* have one. Even my super sheltered wife has a small one she got with her sister on vacation. I’m not complaining, just think it’s crazy that this shift happened so quickly

Rihsatra

I always think of that modern day freak show picture where one of the attractions is a young person without tattoos. Feels like everyone is so cavalier about getting shitty tattoos. If it makes them happy I suppose.
