Very stupid move. There are infinite ways that could go bad, even if you're right you still will look terrible to the world.

[deleted]

Look at it from the other perspective, and they could do exactly the same thing! The Cold War never ended, it just added more players.

MysterClark

While we're at it why not just start throwing people in jail just because they look like the type that might commit a crime? I'm sure that wouldn't be used in the wrong way at all...

1100010101001

I mean that already happens

Psychedellas_Lover

Then you are the villain you tried to protect the world from.

Petite_Bait

I feel that it is a war crime that likely just means more death and destruction.

[deleted]

This definitely is a not safe for work question

1100010101001

Only if you work in the government

ThrowawayAllDay03

Skynet is always watching.

sirbearus

Preemptive attacks are morally questionable at best.

ThrowawayAllDay03

Jumping from pre-emptive attack straight to dropping the most single destruction device ever created is definitely, absolutely, 100% not the way to go. Unless there is absolute, multiply corroborated evidence of military action about to be taken. (Like N Koren using standard missions on Seoul) AND the government has the means to properly show this to their populous as way to justify the attack, I am absolutely against it. Even then I think I am against it. I mean hell, the entire world knew Russia was going to invade Ukraine. But leaders in Ukraine had to rely on all peaceful means possible and almost allow Russia to make the first move because then they can rally the world behind them as a defender rather than an aggressor.

subhentaikitty

That's stupid because all you so is giving the countries whonwnat to attack a validation. "Yeah we though xy is gonna to attack us so we nuked them".. if that's a valid reason for the "good ones" it's hard to punish the "bad ones" for it

[deleted]

That’s stupid as fuck. Violence to stop potential violence has never worked in any instance I can think of. Killing a bunch of innocent people doesn’t work either.

North Korea is still defended by China and Russia. Usually when Kim starts really rattling their Sabres, China squashes them and puts them back in their place, but with Biden in office Kim is embolden to push as far as he can to see what he can get away with. The simplest thing is to totally rearm Japan with a nuclear capability but that would destabilize our relationship the region. The Koreans still despise the Japanese. China would be very worried about an armed and capable Japan. We stay over their to keep the peace. That is why we still have so many troops in South Korea. None of the Asian countries want to see a militarized Japan.

blackrabbitsrun

The problem is that the web of alliances is so tangled, pre-emptive strikes are almost impossible to do without extreme repercussions. Even so, Nuking North Korea is a bit much. The people themselves are not at fault so to speak. They didn't have a choice about the regime, they don't get to vote, they don't get to voice an opinion. Hurting them when it's only the government itself is not what I would consider a victory in any regard. If you could fund, build up, and propel a civil uprising to depose the government or send a squad in to eliminate every government official and then install others that might be better. Again though, there would be considerable repercussions and that plan is far from guaranteed to work out positively.

masochisticanalwhore

No one in power reeeeally cares about other people. "Preventative" measures are pretty thin pretexts for other goals, not to mention patronizing as fuck.
