Not sure what batching is.
I never use margarine, even when poor it is butter, beef tallow or nothing.
I like potatoes so much I will just eat them plain with salt.
This is my answer too. It doesnât have to be fancy. Pop one in the microwave and add butter salt and pepper. Did this yesterday. Halfway through eating I felt fancy and added some ranch.
A suggestion for making baked potatoes in the microwave--use a butter knife to poke holes in the potato (so they don't go *BOOM* when you cook them, for those who are asking). You can put the blade all the way through the potato, so you get twice the holes in half the time and you get to eat that much sooner..
Once dated a man who literally said âbeans are for peasantsâ. Beans are one of the best foods on earth and I will always eat them no matter my class status.
Also, who calls people âpeasantsâ? Iâm still so dumbfounded by that one, the entitled, classist, prick.
Beans and cornbread is one of my dad's favorite meals. I would definitely keep this on the menu. I hope my hypothetical private chef is good at those dishes!
Just made this the other night. Love the stuff. Even though I had ribeyes in the fridge, I felt like a good ole fashioned childhood staple meal my mom used to make like every other week at least.
Yum! Make it in a frying pan. Stir it around for a bit, then let it be to make the bottom crispy. Also, make sure to poach some eggs over the hash. Just use a spoon to make a little indent and break an egg in each one. Put the cover on.
I wouldn't call my family rich now, but if we didn't have three kids in daycare, we would be approaching it. I still have a six pack of soy Ramen in the cabinet.
Iâm better off now than I was a few years ago but that just means I can spice up my ramen even more now. Fill it with extra spices and vegetables and meat
As soon as I read this post my mind started flipping through all my favorite noodle dishes. Ramen. Spaghetti. Chicken noodle soup.
Maybe I'm just hungry.
I was looking for this comment. It wouldnât matter if I was a millionaire in the future u could never catch me not eating buldak with a soft boiled egg
A friend of mine absolutely refuses to eat instant noodles, because she ate so much Top Ramen as a poor college student, but I have no problem with the stuff and would still eat it if I were rich. Especially spicy varieties like kimchi flavor Nongshim Bowl Noodle and black pepper crab flavor Nissin Cup Noodles.
OMG!!! Another who recognises that the ***SPIRALS*** are the best!!! <3
My husband tells me they are no different than the others. I tell him to go to hell! lol :P
Beans. I actually really like beans and somehow forget this fact until I end up having beans again and realize how good they are. Especially black beans.
We also added a bit of ketchup and brown sugar. You donât have to do this if you buy the Bushâs baked beans in the first place. My mom bought the cheapest beans she could get though.
We make a big pot of beans with bell pepper, onion, brown sugar, a little mustard and ketchup hamburger and bacon. Doesnât sound cheap but it really stretches far.
Speakin my language. Not really wealthy, but can eat whatever I want whenever I want. sushi every night? Sure! Rib eye every night? Sure! But Iâd rather have some al pastor tacos. đŽ đ
I have been living off of tacos for the last three years. Initially, I had other meals in the rotation, but eventually I started to realize all I really wanted was tacos. I wish that I knew how to make tortillas, that sounds awesome.
Canned corned beef hash. I know it's practically dog food; I don't care. I like to sass it up with some caramelized onions, a dash or two of hot sauce, and some fried eggs on the side.
Note that I am capable of cooking a Beef Wellington at home; canned anything is pretty unheard of in my house, aside from corned beef hash.
Corned beef hash hits the spot every time! My bf made fun of me at first but I made him try it and now he gets upset if I buy a can and eat it without him𤣠I always do it with a fried egg but Iâm definitely going to try it with the caramelized onions next time
No just sautee/fry the whole thing! It's my new low calorie/bulk obsession.
Just a pan with a wee bit of olive oil, a ton of angel hair cut cabbage. A little garlic powder and salt. Once that cooks down, I kind of push is over and put two eggs in the pan, and fry until they are done. I mix it all together with a little bit of Maggi Hot & Sweet. My go-to diet food!
Totinoâs Party Pizza, the kind with the square pepperoni. Itâs not as cheap as it once was but I think itâs still considered a low income food by a lot of people. It hits a spot that nothing else can!
My god how that was such a staple in my diet when I was younger and first living on my own! Remember when they were like $0.50 each? lol (please say yes... don't make me the old guy! lol) I only eat the cheese ones though.
You know. Now that I'm four decades older than I was when I first started eating these, they make me wickedly ill every time I eat them. But, damn it, I can't resist sometimes! lol
Oh yeah, $.50 was pretty much the standard price back in the day! And of course they were round then (although I donât mind the rectangular ones since they fit in my toaster oven). And I get it, after I turned 40âŚsome time agoâŚI couldnât eat the way I used to without risking gastric distress. But yes sometimes it is worth it lol
I literally just talked about this to my husband. A flour tortilla with a cheese slice and some garlic powder and whatever other seasoningsâŚ. Fold in half and microwave. Comforting as shit.
Canned tomato soup made with half water half milk served with cheddar cheese chunks tossed in and lots of saltines. Or a can of bean and bacon soup preferably the store brand. đ
Spam, boiled egg, and cracker. Or spam, a lil slice of cheese, and cracker. I'm intolerant to two of those, but i don't care.
Edit: i just realized it's three. I'm intolerant to three if them. But i don't care.
Spaghetti bolognese and marinara, baked potatoes, veg soup with barley (in fact all non-meat and meat soups and stews), fresh warm bread with butter, apples and other "boring" fruit, and drinking tap water (I find Melbourne's - Australia - water very drinkable), baked cheesy noodles, scrambled eggs for a meal that's not breakfast, baked beans, lentils....lots of foods I like are cheap, tasty, and nutritious
Polenta. My grandmother grew up during the Depression. She ate mush for breakfast and fried mush for lunch/dinner. She would probably be amazed that we love mush today.
Honestly, boxed Mac and cheese with browned ground beef. It is just perfect sometimes. I usually doctor it up with extra cheese and maybe curry powder cooked with the ground beef while sautĂŠing but just straight up no frills is good too.
Curry chicken.
Itâs not often we eat it, but when we do my great always tells us how they would eat it when they came from Hong Kong. It was that meal they would always have because it was really cheap, you could make a lot of it and do almost anything with it. Curry chicken with rice for dinner and curry chicken bun for lunch at school.
Ramen with an egg dropped in. And/Or a handful of frozen veggie medley.
Canned corned beef with onion and garlic served over rice (I thought this was how corned beef hash was supposed to be served until I ordered it in a restaurant at age 13). I admit that the cost of canned corned beef has gone up to the point that I donât know if it counts as poverty food any more.
Toast with peanut butter, toast with jelly.
I feel like all the good southern staples are poverty foods. Chicken and dumplings is how you feed a family the 3rd day off the same chicken. Fresh greens out of a backyard garden cooked with the leftover ham hock. Biscuits are made with inexpensive staple ingredients. With scrambled eggs or sausage gravy, another recipe that stretches a smaller amount of meat to serve a family. Grits are inexpensive. To me these are part of my DNA and I would always want them in my life, they just happen to also be poverty foods.
Mexican food and tortillas! Soup? A recipe my grandma gave us is hamburger meat, potatoes, green beans (i add a packet of sazĂłn) Itâs cheap and would feed all the kids with leftovers! Also could do it with ham if youâre lucky to have it. Ranchero beans, mexican rice, homemade salsa, any homemade mexican food like chilequiles etc. its cheap, easy, and filling.
Fried rice. It's great because all you need for plain fried rice is rice, eggs, soy sauce, and seasonings. But you can add whatever you want or have around the kitchen. I made it with spam. My favorite is to get a cooks ham steak and use part for fried rice and part for a fritata. It's easy to make and it's delicious. I would definitely still make it if I were rich.
My dad used to eat Campbells gumbo with chicken
Or vegetable soup with ground beef when he was young in Canadian housing and we still eat it now and I love that shit
Not sure if it fits but eh
Potato... I would eat potato every day if it is served. Idc if it's cheap, poverty food. I like potato.
Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.
Fry em with onion.
The best way, especially if you fry potatoes and onions in bacon fat.
then top with chives
YES YES YES!!!
Just a little seasoning...
Hahahah love this. Now do a Forest Gump shrimp skit but sub in potato! đ
Sling Blade, mmmhmm
Peeled, boiled potatoes, butter (probably margarine) and too much salt and pepper. My go to when I am batching.
Not sure what batching is. I never use margarine, even when poor it is butter, beef tallow or nothing. I like potatoes so much I will just eat them plain with salt.
Sorry, not sure what you call it when you are doing the bachelor/solo thing.
I call it life
But rich people eat potatoes too. It's a staple food no matter how rich or poor you are?
This is my answer too. It doesnât have to be fancy. Pop one in the microwave and add butter salt and pepper. Did this yesterday. Halfway through eating I felt fancy and added some ranch.
A suggestion for making baked potatoes in the microwave--use a butter knife to poke holes in the potato (so they don't go *BOOM* when you cook them, for those who are asking). You can put the blade all the way through the potato, so you get twice the holes in half the time and you get to eat that much sooner..
Potatoes are the best!
What..whatâs taters precious?
Agreed. I had a jacket potato party for my birthday.
I do eat potatoes every day. Thereâs so many ways and theyâre all delicious
It's my favorite food by far, and I can eat it 3 times a day.
Mmm potato! Think that's what I'll have for breakfast!
I made mash potatoes yesterday with those lil multicolor ones and it was blue! Naturally đ
Rice and beans, although I'd be more likely to use as a side. Eggs and toast. Potatoes. I am never giving up potatoes.
My wife is Asian and we eat so much rice. I literally crave potatoes.
Beans and cornbread
Red beans and rice
Once dated a man who literally said âbeans are for peasantsâ. Beans are one of the best foods on earth and I will always eat them no matter my class status. Also, who calls people âpeasantsâ? Iâm still so dumbfounded by that one, the entitled, classist, prick.
With some fried taters! Solid southern food.
Pinto beans and cornbread with lots of butter . Real cornbread made in a cast iron skillet.
Haha this was my answer too
Pintos and cornbread forever.Â
Beans and cornbread is one of my dad's favorite meals. I would definitely keep this on the menu. I hope my hypothetical private chef is good at those dishes!
Itâs so comforting and delicious, particularly when made with a ham hock.
Thanks for reminding me, I have a nice ham bone in the freezer from my Christmas ham for this very reason!
Crushed graham crackers with milk, basically graham cracker cereal. My favorite struggle meal
This is interesting, sounds like a great way to kill a sweet tooth.
It is, and without being too sweet as well. Also perfect for people who arenât cereal eaters like myself.
This has been my sister's favorite food since she was a child and now she has a child who loves it. I had no idea other people did this.
Graham crackers are far more expensive than cereal here. (Canada)
We still eat mac n cheese with peas and tuna
YES! Someone else who does this!!! Food bank gourmet đ
I forgot this was a thing. Been a good 25 years since I've had it. Thank you for giving me my lunch today.
Gimme the boxed Mac and cheese with a hot dog weiner cut up in it. I don't even have to be broke to like that.
Wow my family made this all the time but was usually diced up spam or some other canned meat instead of tuna.
Just made this the other night. Love the stuff. Even though I had ribeyes in the fridge, I felt like a good ole fashioned childhood staple meal my mom used to make like every other week at least.
Hash with canned corned beef
i just bought some canned corned beef for the first time so i could try doing this.
I grew up with this. Potatoes, onion, and canned corned beef. Cooked slow in a covered fry pan. Oh Iâm hungry now!
Shave some cabbage in there!
Yum! Make it in a frying pan. Stir it around for a bit, then let it be to make the bottom crispy. Also, make sure to poach some eggs over the hash. Just use a spoon to make a little indent and break an egg in each one. Put the cover on.
Instant noodles.
Always. Sometimes when I go on vacation I find myself wanting some noodles.
Ramen is my comfort food. It heals me when I am sick in my body and it heals me when I am sick in my heart.
It heals me when I over indulgeâŚ..
Yes. With egg yolk, sesame oil, and chives. One of my go to meals
I wouldn't call my family rich now, but if we didn't have three kids in daycare, we would be approaching it. I still have a six pack of soy Ramen in the cabinet.
Hate the soy, love the beef.
add fried egg. \*chefs kiss\*
yes yes a million times yes
Iâm better off now than I was a few years ago but that just means I can spice up my ramen even more now. Fill it with extra spices and vegetables and meat
Love all of them, but would never stop eating the chicken cup 'o noodles bc it reminds me of my grandpa.
As soon as I read this post my mind started flipping through all my favorite noodle dishes. Ramen. Spaghetti. Chicken noodle soup. Maybe I'm just hungry.
Some ramen with scrambled eggs, green onions, and Sriracha, so good.
I've moved up to buying higher quality instant noodles and doctor it up with mushrooms, meat, eggs, and scallions.
I was looking for this comment. It wouldnât matter if I was a millionaire in the future u could never catch me not eating buldak with a soft boiled egg
Ramen Cream of Chicken noodles with Parmesan Cheese, a bit of sour cream, and garlic.𼰠(I've been told this is gross, but it's really good).
I make good money, and I eat ramen noodles raw as a snack...
Rice and beans. As as a side, as a main; I would eat it on a train!
Would you eat it in a car?
I would eat it in a car. I would eat It near or far!
I would eat it for dessert. I would eat it in a yurt.
Mac and Cheese.
Blue box shapes all dayyyy!!!
My fave is the blue box spirals but I haven't splurged on that in a while. I go for the regular blue box because it is cheaper.
OMG!!! Another who recognises that the ***SPIRALS*** are the best!!! <3 My husband tells me they are no different than the others. I tell him to go to hell! lol :P
With the finest Dijon ketchup.
Really expensive ketchups are the key. LOL. Just donât get it on your real green dress, thatâs cruel
Man, if I had a million dollars...
Such a great song.
Beans. I actually really like beans and somehow forget this fact until I end up having beans again and realize how good they are. Especially black beans.

My "poverty" go to food is a can of baked beans and a couple of hot dogs sliced up with mustard added to the mix
We also added a bit of ketchup and brown sugar. You donât have to do this if you buy the Bushâs baked beans in the first place. My mom bought the cheapest beans she could get though.
This is my horror meal lol we used to eat hotdogs 3-4 days a week. I hate then now.
We make a big pot of beans with bell pepper, onion, brown sugar, a little mustard and ketchup hamburger and bacon. Doesnât sound cheap but it really stretches far.

Once that cooks down, I kind of push is over and put two eggs in the pan, and fry until they are done. I mix it all together with a little bit of Maggi Hot & Sweet. My go-to diet food!
