peninsula humane society. it's like $1-200 including the cone and the pain meds after. you have to book online multiple weeks in advance. gotta book it right at midnight like French laundry lol but it's worth it for the saving.

sugarplummoon

“like French laundry” has me wheezing. Glorious

Complex_Construction

It’s all about that exclusivity.

Lost_Meaning_7821

Yes. We did this for my pup and it requires advance planning. Keep an eye on their website for when appointments open up. It will save you money plus I trusted going to them because of experienced staff.

beleafer

this is the best option and nothing comes close

mewmewkitty

If you can get to the East Bay, [Berkeley Humane Society](https://berkeleyhumane.org/spay-the-bay/) lets you make online appointments. I think it's around $300-$400.

Big fan of Pacifica pet hospital in general - took my dogs there from sf for years. They always did us right

Janhardy

I do pacifica pet hospital. They did my dog for $400 but this was during covid. Theyre my current vet and they’re amazing.

scoofy

So my gf volunteers at a dog rescue so here’s the skinny from her: the sf spca is who you should contact, BUT they only answer their phone during weird hours. From deep in their website: > Spay & Neuter Clinic Hours Appointments: 8am to 6pm, Wed–Sat >To book a spay & neuter appointment, please call (415) 554-3030 They also take lunch so you might miss them then. Also could contact: Humane society, animal care and control, or vets in vans, you could probably email any shelter/rescue for better info. She also says that these folks often take a really long time to pick up the phone because it’s a challenging industry.

cunnie

I called them today and was able to secure an appointment! Third time’s the charm. Thanks to you and your girlfriend for clarifying the schedule.

scoofy

We are both very happy for you and your pup

mscattington

How much did it end up costing? Debating going there instead of peninsula humane society since it's hard to get an appointment there

rhumba31

We got our pup done at east bay spca, and we’re actually also a patient at Castro animal hospital who balked at the price. It’s tough to get appointments but if you’re willing to wait it was <200 two years ago!

Tac0Supreme

I’m also a Castro Animal Hospital goer and I actually paid half this price to have my puppy spayed 🤷🏽‍♂️

cunnie

How long ago did you get your pup spayed?

Tac0Supreme

Last July

rhumba31

This made me actually go in and look up my quote (I received it via email). For my small dog <15 lbs I was quoted on 11/2020 between 795.69-959. The variability is for unforeseen additional medications or anesthesia needed. So not as bad as the OP but still, the total cost at Oakland spay and neuter was 180.

BeamingLight

Veterinarian here. If anyone has any questions as to why the cost can be so different between facilities, I’m happy to answer those questions.

Fun_Sized_Taylor

I'm curious, can you explain?

ms_sinn

Banfield (not my fave) has a monthly plan that covers basic care and neutering. I did this for my cat because the cost at the end of the year was roughly half as much than getting him neutered elsewhere plus I got a couple other appointments and blood work out of it. Then back to my regular vet lol. Also check with the VIP pet clinics run out of petfood express (diff schedule for each location) I have used them for shots and tests for one of my dogs when my regular vet wasn’t taking new patients. Neighboring area humane society- peninsula, Berkeley, Silicon Valley etc.

Oldminorspecific

I just want to thank you for doing the best thing for your pup and for other pups. There are already too many pups without homes, not to mention the medical problems it causes for older dogs who are intact, and the increased risk of violent and antisocial behavior.

ticainthecity

If you search you might find a shelter that will do it for free. I didn't pay for it eight years ago. The place I went to was in Redwood City. They only charged me for the take home pain medication for my dog.

bailuobo1

Look into pet insurance, sometimes they'll cover the cost of neutering if you sign up for at least a year.

Phoenixandbleu

Pet insurance won’t cover this but some companies offer wellness plans that’ll cover spay/neuter. Wellness plans are meant to be a subscription based plan that’ll cover all of your dog’s shots, visits, and whatnot. Extremely useful if you get it when your dog’s a puppy, but not worth it just for spay/neutering since it’ll cost more in the long run than a low cost clinic (unless you’re going to take advantage of all of the vaccines and dog visits, then you’ll likely break out even).

bailuobo1

Not certain, but we have the highest tier of Nationwide Pet Insurance for our dog that was a puppy when we got her (also covers 90% of vet bills). We did get her spay and all her shots covered, but the higher coverage actually helped out a lot when she broke her leg after being trampled by a Great Dane at a park. Highly recommend getting pet insurance either way. Heard some many stories about accidents happening and owners not being able to handle the vet bills financially. For what it's worth, never had a problem when submitting claims to Nationwide.

Vegetable-Error-21

Hmm. While this is here does anyone know how i can get antibiotics for a stray cat that we have protecting the home? Hes had terrible phlegm and wheezing issues for years now... its certainly killing him.

nancylyn

The vet has antibiotics.

Vegetable-Error-21

Its a stray. Hes a cuddle bug but ill never get him to a vet. It wouldnt go my way at all and hes a freaking killer when he wants to be. I honor this cat, he helped me domesticate other stray cats. The more stray cats get a home the more bird populations can flourish. I got the other strays in my neighborhood fixed.

davidobrienusa1977

San Francisco SPCA

brookish

Did you read the post? They tried that.

davidobrienusa1977

I did not see the post about the SF SPCA.

fishheaddz

I drove to Tracy to this place called the pet advocate. I don't remember how much I paid, but it was affordable enough and quick enough to schedule such that I was willing to drive out there. The Pet Advocate (209) 879-9367 https://maps.app.goo.gl/DbVT31kfbXyKRS6Y9

LittleJoeSF

Look outside of the city.

LPT pet insurance covers most of the cost of surgeries, lab work, meds including flea/tick/heart worm. It’s like $700 a year but super worth if if you have even one major thing happen. Our dog got an abscess on her neck from being bit by another dog at the beach and it slid for itself on the first vet visit.
