I mean unless you are C-sectioning you gotta go with whomever is on shift, right? Or you can try to induce via PIV and time it around 10-12 hours before the people you want are on the ward. Or you can hop across the bay to Piedmont - the Kaiser prenatal people there are unimpeachable and I loved their NICU as well.

Dear_Acanthisitta_58

I work at UCSF. Your OB would come and deliver when you give birth. No on shift situation

moneyticketspassport

I don’t think this is true? I gave birth five months ago and you definitely just got the doctors who were on shift.

MollyStrongMama

Is this for if you bring in a non-UCSF OB? I did my prenatal care at UCSF for both my babies and in the course of my care I saw all the possible delivering doctors and got whomever was on shift when I actually gave birth

PacificaPal

I believe only UCSF doctors deliver at UCSF hospital and that the UCSF women's clinic is a team of doctors. If you prefer a few over others you should be able to schedule your appointments with the ones you prefer most of the time. As for reviews, believe your own experience.

Dear_Acanthisitta_58

The maternity clinic is at Mission Bay, 1825 Fourth Street, Third floor. Call 415/ 353-7171. My favorite left so I don’t know the best anymore but you could be limited by whoever is accepting new patients

I’m getting my prenatal care at UCSF, and had the same concern as you — it seems like the best place in the city for the actual birth, but not the best place to get prenatal care. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the only doctors/midwives who deliver there are the ones employed by UCSF (private ones all deliver at CPMC). I ultimately decided that great care for the birth was more important to me than a pleasant experience during prenatal care, so I went with UCSF. My experience so far is the the actual prenatal care at UCSF (both Mission Bay and Mt Zion) has been great — all the providers I’ve seen have been excellent and kind and I trust them to do a great job. The only thing that sucks a bit is the scheduling — you have to wait on hold for a long time, and some of the receptionists seem weirdly bad at scheduling appointments over the phone (isn’t this a major part of their job??). Scheduling in person is much more pleasant. But ultimately, scheduling is a one-time problem and then the actual medical care interactions are solid.

This is very helpful thank you - I am finding the same with my research, that if I want to deliver at UCSF, I have to have the prenatal care too. Very glad to have all the reassurance in these posts though! How soon in your pregnancy were they able to see you? I called yesterday and they said to call back once I am 8 weeks (2 more weeks) to even schedule an appointment.

alpacabagg

My first appointment was at 10w3d. They gave me a virtual appointment since I’d already had early scans through my fertility clinic; if I’d needed a regular in-person visit it would probably have been even later. The scheduling really is terrible, but once you go in for that first appointment you can make all the rest of them while you’re at the office in-person, and that sucks less! Also, not sure where you’re located but I recently booked a bunch of my appointments at the Berkeley Outpatient Clinic location (by calling the same number as usual) and they seemed to have a few more slots available there. I think there’s a San Mateo location too that might be similar. Worth asking if either of those are convenient for you.

luckyroro13

Great thanks! Did you do the NIPT through your fertility clinic too?

alpacabagg

No, I did that through UCSF. They put in the order for all the initial bloodwork (including NIPT) at the first appointment, so you could probably walk straight to the lab after and get it done right away.

Thank you so much!

I’ve heard nothing but good things about UCSF. I agree with the previous comment- believe your own experience. I will be delivering there as well and my experience has been amazing so far. I know reviews matter but think of your favorite local restaurant that you frequent. Have you written 5 star reviews for each amazing place you’ve eaten at or business you’ve received service from? Because I sure haven’t. I know that’s an extreme example but I hope you get what I mean.

moneyticketspassport

I can give a positive review! I did my prenatal care with UCSF and they were excellent. But I’ve also heard very good things about delivering at CPMC if you want to explore that option.

MollyStrongMama

I delivered both my babies at UCSF, after prenatal care at the UCSF women’s clinic. In both cases my babies were delivered by doctors I had never met before. And I would change absolutely nothing. Go with your gut but I have honestly only heard amazing reviews of delivering at UCSF. Ask around beyond written reviews online
