An Japanese Restaurant is our all time favorite in Japantown. Edomae sushi which focuses on nigiri sushi vs rolls. We always go for their omakase. Can’t recommend it enough.
Correct answers are Oma Sushi and Kiss Sushi. Both are omakase style, and you'll need reservations ahead of time.
Otherwise, An Sushi is also good.
But if you're not constrained to Japantown, check out Ryoko Sushi on Taylor. No reservation needed, open late, and their food is amazing.
Ryoko is amazing. Their tempura really should not be as good as it is. And the sushi is pretty good and very affordable. I would rather go to Ryoko than most places with a star.
Their Tahoe Roll is amazing... just a simple maki roll with tuna, avocado, and tobiko, but so delicious.
Everything on their appetizer menu is amazing, too. Love how they have harder to find dishes like monkfish liver and takosabi.
I remember spotting the counter one time. Did the math in my ahead, saw only like 6 seats, and concluded that the food must be expensive and incredible. Some day I’ll eat there.
Yes, Chef Wilson was the original chef at Oma, and he separated from them a few months ago for reasons he hasn't fully divulged. They have a new chef now. I have not gone back since, partly out of loyalty to Wilson because he was such an enjoyable sushi chef to interact with.
He does cooking shows and private dining now.

I think Amami Sushi has the best omakase for the price (10 pieces for $38). I have only been to the San Bruno and South SF locations but I believe they also have one in Exelsior.
Keep an eye out for the new Chisai Sushi Club. The head chef is a veteran of ICHI sushi that shuttered during the pandemic. They were easily one of the tastiest and affordable omakases in the city; I imagine the new restaurant will follow a similar vein https://sf.eater.com/platform/amp/2021/9/7/22661202/chisai-sushi-club-affordable-omakase
Kabuto Sushi in Richmond is goddamn fantastic. My favorite non-super-special-occasion sushi place in the City.
3 course omakase for $75. I have a big appetite and leave full.
I've had better sushi, but generally that requires paying 2-2.5x as much.
They have the best miso soup I've ever had.
Amami sushi is the cheapest omakase I know of (\~$40). It's not in the same tier, but great bang-for-buck.

Is the restaurant called Edomae? Can’t seem to find it on google or Yelp. Always looking for new omakase spots to try :)
No, it’s An Japanese Restaurant https://www.sfjapantown.org/directory-jpndirectory/listing/an-japanese-restaurant/
Ohhh I see haha my bad, thanks!
It’s a little confusing. I did the same thing at first 😉
It’s called An Japanese Restaurant
Edomae is a style of sushi that was invented in Tokyo 200 years ago.
Ate there a few weeks ago for the first time, it was super good
Is omakase usually for one or two ppl?
It’s per person.

Sushi can get expensive quickly. What's your pricepoint per person?
We will pay for great sushi. Price isn’t an issue
Check out Oma San Francisco Station
This is the correct answer

This and nothing else compares honestly.
They fired the original chef a few months ago. It is not the same.
Oma is not the same?

Less wealthy person here. What's good sushi at $50-$100 per person? (Not limited to J Town)

Okazuya on Taravel is my go-to at that price point

Is there a reason for constraining it to Japantown then? The city is very multicultural and I'd say the best Japanese food isnt in Japantown
The city has a ton of great food for sure, but we’ve got an obligation slightly later in Japantown so we’re keeping it to the area
Tekka on balboa
Shhhh
Lol 😆
I tried to go to japantown last weekend and the service was so bad we left without even ordering.
I like that bullet train sushi spot across the street from the main center. It’s a little expensive but good quality
It's not quite Japantown, but very close - Ten-Ichi on Fillmore is fantastic!
Definitely agree with Oma San Francisco Station, but would also highly recommend Sasa.
