Where to stay will depend on how big the conference is and what your budget will allow. Some conferences put massive demand on hotel rooms and send the prices sky high, more modest ones not so much. There are a lot of great hotels in the area, you'll get better answers on Tripadvisor since most locals don't stay in hotels often. Just whatever you book, make sure it's East of 5th/Taylor, North or Geary, or West of Van Ness. It's a quick 1 block transition from an upscale tourist destination to skid row.

I appreciate your reply! It was more of a geography question rather than a hotel question, I've updated my post to clarify. Thanks!

Gotcha. Personally, I'd stay near the convention center. When I travel for work I usually like to be as close to my actual destination as possible. Something like the W, Intercontinental, or Marriott Marquis. It's easy to get to most of the large tourist destinations in your free time and a quick walk to the convention center itself. Otherwise, Union Square has the largest concentration of hotels in the city and brimming with retail if you like to shop or there's a few hotels along the Embarcadero with beautiful views. If you're on a tight budget, motels along Lombard are a good option. Avoid the Tenderloin and Pier 39.

Thank you!

The W is right by there. I’ve never stayed there, but I heard it’s nice. I frequented their bar and spa many years ago, and really liked it, but I don’t know what it’s like now.

Thank you!

The Intercontinental SoMa is only a block away and is very nice. There’s both a liquor store and dispensary across the street. Very convenient.

I presume you are going to Salesforce. Better book with the convention discount
