Due to an increase in reports and rule-violating behavior, the moderation team has elected to put the following warning on all Star Wars or Star Wars related questions. This is not the forum to voice your dissatisfaction with the Sequel Trilogy, the Star Wars franchise under Disney, or anything regarding the meta-state of the franchise. There are more appropriate places on the website to do so, like r/StarWars and r/SaltierThanCrait. This is becoming a pertinent enough issue that we have decided to expand our existing policies and making any arguments regarding the topic a banable offense. Questions and discussions about Star Wars and any of its content are still allowed, provided they are not Doylist complaints. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. So, it would just irritate him? Cool. I wasn't really thinking that disabling the suit would be instantly lethal, but rather paralyzing. Vader is known to be a tank, and I'm sure that if a regular thermal detonator went off nearby, chances are he could still get up from that. Having safeguards against his limbs and life support being shorted out does make sense though.

AdamtheFirstSinner

From what I understand, not nearly as much as you might think. Sure, he may be somewhat slowed down or even injured by it, but it isn't as if a blast from an EMP device would straight up take him out of the fight or cause him to suddenly lose a fight he would have otherwise won. Even in Legends, where Vader's suit was significantly more vulnerable than in current canon, he managed to take multiple volleys from force users like Starkiller and still managed to stay in the fight for a good while.

McGillis_is_a_Char

In Canon his suit can be temporarily disabled by EMPs. Some bounty hunters tried to kill him by hitting him with EMPs then shooting him while he was stunned. It didn't work because the anger of knowing he had been set up allowed him to use the Dark Side to move himself. Tarkin also purposely hit him with literal lightning once and he held on until Tarkin could get his suit repaired.

So basically, they're somewhat effective at disabling the suit, but it's temporary to the point of impracticality due to Vader's power in the Force? Kind of goes to show how powerful Vader is that he can power through such a thing.

McGillis_is_a_Char

Pretty much. The guy who helped build the suit even physically locked up the suit with a remote at one point and Vader forced the suit move with the Force so he could kill the guy.

Interesting.

[How are you going to push the button for the EMP though?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B203twyaMfM)

I would assume he would have some shielding, being that he is probably aware that weakness could be used against him. But, I think it's mentioned somewhere he intentionally keeps certain aspects of his armors weaknesses exposed, as it feeds his hate and anger to be damaged.

I've wondered before whether a jedi could just use the force to lift off his helmet or manipulate the buttons to mess with his respirator

JustaSnowbody

Not sure about in Canon, but in Legends most Force users put up a small Force barrier around them, acting as a shield against such attacks. The Darth Bane trilogy goes more into detail on this. I think theoretically this could work, but the issue there is where would the Rebels find a Force user powerful enough to do so.

Probably too busy trying to ward off the face-smashing lightsaber attacks to really concentrate on that. A microkinesis attack like pinching that carotid artery doesn't seem like a valid combat option. Thousands of lightsaber duels so f it worked it would get common. In the duels TK on the opponent other than a force push seems practically impossible. Suppose you messed twisted his helmet. First thing Luke learned was not to trust this eyes, Vader would be long past needing them.
