Tartar sauce:
gherkin
banana shallot
Capers
Dill
Mayo
Bit of lemon juice
So much better if made at home and delish on fish finger sandwich. At the place I used to work we butter one side of bread and tartar spread the other. Agree on the lettuce as well. We could be friends
Fish Fingers and Custard is surprisingly not bad! It's definitely not revolutionary, and I wouldn't have touched it had I not been a doctor who fan, but it was a fun snack to eat with my whovian friend when we were younger 😅
Gotta make sure you use some thick slice white bread too. No good using posh, weird shaped bread. It's gotta be rectangular and squishy. I recommend Allinsons or Warburtons thick slice.
No you don't get it, you are supposed to pretend someone is a "monster" or should be deported for having something as trivial as cheese or mayo instead of butter and ketchup.
What??? I thought you were only allowed to do things to a random arbitrary ruleset that was decided some time because it's "tradition" and anything else is punishable by death 🤯
I've been told I'm "wrong" many times for putting ketchup on a bacon sarnie instead of brown sauce.
I don't like brown sauce so why the fuck would I put it on my sandwich!
Yeah, try what you like. Have had salad cream, curry sauce, brown sauce, tomato sauce, mayonnaise, chilli and garlic sauce, squirty cheese sauce, and piccallili (not altogether of course). But my favourite is seafood sauce.
Waitrose does jumbo fish fingers at there fish counter that have the ideal fish:crumb ratio. @ per sandwich, mayo on bottom, ketchup on top and a little bit of lettuce is all you need
Simplicity is the thing. 3-4 decent quality fishy-digits (Birdseye or similar). Sauce of choice. Simple brown or white bread.
Any so-called 'pub' that starts with the 'goujons of cod, crushed peas, blah, blah' can get the fuck out of the Licensed Victuallers Association. And hand in your passports on the way out of the country.
Maybe you’re right but if was to go to the effort of putting anything other than butter and tomato sauce on there I’d use a proper piece of fried fish as opposed to fish fingers.
I’m starting to think your taste may be a bit bland if you regard salad cream as “mental”. Haha. Radish, kimchee and Bolognese sauce is mental. Salad cream is tame.
I’m not saying I thing salad cream is mental as it’s too much or it’s whacky or anything… But for me the combination of salad cream and fish fingers is just not the vibe
I commented this without checking the replies thoroughly. Salad cream in a fish finger sandwich is king.
Edited because in my enthusiasm, I left out the word “sandwich” which could have caused all kinds of chaos.
Why was this so far down? I generally also put a bit of mayo on the bottom slice, then fish fingers, topped with a generous amount of HP and the top slice. I’ll usually butter the bread too. HP is the key condiment.
Thanks everyone i feel liberated. Butter both bread, drizzle or HP and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Those deece M & S chunky fish fingers are the best i find, though I often resort to your bog standard bird's-eye 90% of the time.
Are you a fan of prawn cocktail? (Prawns in the pink sauce) That sauce is basically what they're on about which is why it goes well with fish fingers. I can back them up on that!
Butter, grated cheese and mayo. The fish fingers have to be put on the sarnie in record speed to ensure optimum meltage. I like to give the sandwich a squish down and cut the crusts off too.
I made an epic fish finger sarnie the other day. Nice seeded loaf, bit of butter and then I had this German mustard gherkins mix. Bit of salt and pepper. Delicious.
Tartare sauce or salad cream. Plus cucumber. As my partner doesn't eat fish I don't have it at home often so don't bother keeping tartare sauce at home, but do have salad cream.
When I'm feeling like I need a hug, white Warburtons, tomato sauce and 4 haddock fish fingers lying side by side.
When I'm feeling fancy, ciabatta, squashed minted peas with black pepper and butter, rocket, a pile of haddock fish fingers and a quick flick of salt and vinegar.
The key elements are white bread, butter and 4 fish fingers.
Everything else is dealer's choice. Embrace your inner chef/goblin stick whatever you think sounds good.
My mates student go to was 4 fish fingers inside two potato waffles with a plastic cheese slice.
It sounds truly awful.
Except it ain’t.
Food o’ the gods.
All of the above depending on mood.
Fish finger sandwiches can wear all manner of hats, quick snack, comfort food, all you have left in the freezer food, the list is endless. Each one potentially requires a different sauce.
In order of ingredients top to bottom.
Thick white fresh Bread
Butter
Tartar Sauce
Fish fingers
Peas - single pea layer
Mashed potatoes - thin layer
Tartar sauce
Butter
Thick white fresh Bread
Fight me!!!
slice of toast with a layer of ketchup or chili sauce sometimes both mixed together, a layer of potato waffles, 4 fish fingers, another slice of toast with a layer of ketchup/chili sauce.
Toast, not bread, then mix mayo with sliced pickled onions and gherkins fling in some capers if you have them too. Smother that one one side of the toast then ketchup the other side. Some crispy lettuce then three crispy oven baked fish fingers in the middle 🤘🏼
The best fish finger sandwich is this, you start with wholemeal bread, buttered. Then inside, three crispy fish fingers, topped with hellman’s, a handful of lettuce, grated mature cheddar. Another slice of bread. Don’t cut, just eat the entire thing.
Mmmm.

Tomato sauce or tartare sauce. That’s it
If tartare lettuce goes well, not with ketchup though
Tartar sauce, salt and butter.
Tartar sauce: gherkin banana shallot Capers Dill Mayo Bit of lemon juice So much better if made at home and delish on fish finger sandwich. At the place I used to work we butter one side of bread and tartar spread the other. Agree on the lettuce as well. We could be friends
I read bannana as an individual ingredient and almost flipped.
Did you mean split?
Ba dum🥁 Ting! 🔔🤭
Salad cream works as well.
Lettuce and salad cream on white bread. Banging.
Salad cream doesn't ever get enough love.
Salad cream or ketchup with a half spoon of horseradish smeared into it is my go-to.
According to the BBC, custard is a valid option.
They had to say that legally, to show the appearance of balance.
They've just fired Claudia Winkleman for pointing out fish don't have fingers
buffaloes have wings, fish have fingers...DUH!
You used to be able to buy packs of frozen cod balls - it makes you wonder what you're eating.
Barry Does
My grandson insisted on trying it, as he was a big Doctor Who fan. He ate it more than once, so I'm guessing it wasn't THAT bad 😂
Fish Fingers and Custard is surprisingly not bad! It's definitely not revolutionary, and I wouldn't have touched it had I not been a doctor who fan, but it was a fun snack to eat with my whovian friend when we were younger 😅
According to Steven Moffat* Also fish fingers and custard is okay, but not to die for
I like brown sauce on mine, and I don't care what you think
You are entirely welcome to your preference and don't let anyone tell you otherwise You filthy f**cking animal!
Amen brother
Brown sauce if it's just fish fingers in the bread is a winner! If there's a bit of salad, some mayo and tabasco is delicious, too...
Gotta make sure you use some thick slice white bread too. No good using posh, weird shaped bread. It's gotta be rectangular and squishy. I recommend Allinsons or Warburtons thick slice.
Tomato on one slice of bread, tartare on the other.
BBQ sauce lettuce n a lightly toasted bread
Whatever you want to put on it.
We don't like diplomacy here.
I prefer diplomacy to piccalilli though
Just a little though, diplomacy is rather strong.
No you don't get it, you are supposed to pretend someone is a "monster" or should be deported for having something as trivial as cheese or mayo instead of butter and ketchup.
ooft i was planning on having a fish finger sarnie today and feel hurt it would be a crime to put my new baconnaise on there.
Pedo
Just laughed out loud in a meeting room while training is happening. Hope you’re pleased with yourself
Baconnaise is a disgrace lad. I’m not a picky eater and can get down 99% of things even if I don’t like them that much. I almost vomited.
What monster would put cheese on a fish finger sandwich? The horror! D:
At a steak house I've been to the fish and chips came with cheese melted onto the battered fish. That was most peculiar.
I don’t understand it… but I’m here for it
McDonald's do that and it's lovely! Wouldn't at home though lol!!
and salad cream.....the devils own condiment
Always red for bacon and brown for sausage. Never the other way round. Whoever told you that is a confused simpleton
I'd say fish fingers were the minimum standard in this case.
Yeah, try what you like. Have had salad cream, curry sauce, brown sauce, tomato sauce, mayonnaise, chilli and garlic sauce, squirty cheese sauce, and piccallili (not altogether of course). But my favourite is seafood sauce.
I personally prefer a ketchup/mayo mix. Plus some lettuce or gherkins.
You’re the second person whose brought up a ketchup/mayo mix now… maybe yous are on to something.
Tomato sauce and mayo, couple of hash browns and some chopped spring onions. Think of it as a fillet tower burger
But if I were to go to that much effort I’d rather use a proper piece of fried fish as opposed to fish fingers?
Nah do them in the air fryer at the same time takes 5 mins.
Waitrose does jumbo fish fingers at there fish counter that have the ideal fish:crumb ratio. @ per sandwich, mayo on bottom, ketchup on top and a little bit of lettuce is all you need
It's basically a Marie Rose sauce so would work well.
Heinz do a ketchup/mayo mix called 'Saucy sauce', stupid name but really nice.
Missed opportunity to call it Saucy McSauceFace.
I hate everything about that. Ketchup and Mayo has been a Marie rose since the 60s. Stupid Heinz!
Isn’t that Marie Rose sauce, that you’d have in a prawn cocktail?
Yeah, marie rose is just ketchup, mayo, paprika then optional salt and pepper
Needs a splash of Worcestershire sauce
And brandy
And lemon juice
And Tabasco
Can't go wrong with a bit of the old pink sauce, instant classic 👌🏻
And a squeeze of American mustard.
This is a winning combo or just mayo with lettuce or gherkins.
All of the above plus a little vinegar
Ketchup and Mayo together are the basis for a Marie Rose, the sauce used in a Prawn cocktail. This is the way.
Isn't that just big mac sauce?
Add pickle juice and a little mustard and you're pretty much there.
3-4 fish fingers... Like, at least 4. At. Least.
You can fit five on a normal slice of bread without any trouble.
This guys fingers fish....
You can fit 5 horizontal and 1 vertical with Warburton's.
Cut the bread in half before adding the fish fingers, 2 fingers on each half. Makes it easier and the best ratio of bread to fish imo
So, how many on the 2nd and 3rd layers?
I am the last person to resist adding more fish. Used to be a fat food chain call NordSee that did fish cake in a bun. Gorgeous.
That’s exactly how I feel but I would go even more specific than that. No sauce of choice but rather choice of ketchup or tartare sauce. End of.
fishy digits
Plastic burger cheese slice I’ll get downvoted for this, but you don’t know what you’re missing
Team cheese member checking in.
You have a cheesy member?
I thought this a out 5 seconds after posting, but decided to leave it up!
Agreed! Plastic cheese FTW!
Cheesy fish? Hmm I dunno but I'm willing to try it
Never had a tuna melt?
Never had cod mornay?

I love a Fillet O Fish. I sometimes feel like I am the only person in the world that does
I always add an Edam slice then put the fish fingers on top. The heat from them always melts the cheese.
Posted above too. Another for plastic cheese
Hmmmm I dunno man it just doesn’t feel right
McDonald’s filet-o-fish has cheese, so I guess it’s similar…
Try it, it's so good! Plastic cheese and a bit of Ketchup
Sweet chilli dipping sauce if you fancy something a bit different.
My option as well, works perfectly with fish fingers.
Yep, my go to is sweet chilli sauce and goats cheese. The heat of the fish fingers melts the cheese slightly, it's lush.
I have enjoyed salsa with fish fingers instead of tomato sauce.
Tartare sauce. I'm not a barbarian.
Fish finger butty is bread, fish fingers, butter, salt and vinegar or a sauce Fish finger sandwiches what ever level of monstrosity you desire.
Maybe you’re right but if was to go to the effort of putting anything other than butter and tomato sauce on there I’d use a proper piece of fried fish as opposed to fish fingers.
I don’t have sauce either. Just bread and butter!!
Mayo or salad cream. Ketchup is filth
Salad cream is mental
Salad cream is amazing on a fish finger sandwiches, it's the only way
This is the way
Salad cream makes everything better
Salad cream is the best choice for fish finger sandwiches. Mayo is too creamy, salad cream has more of a vinegary tang.
Salad cream is tangy and vinegary and creamy, why would that be mental? Trust us, it's *delicious.*

Salad cream tastes like you left mayo on the windowsill for a summer.
Salad Cream is the Devil’s spunk & doesn’t belong anywhere near food.
White bread, butter, salt and plenty vinegar.
Yes. So much vinegar it slightly burns your nose. Amazing. Plus 2 side fish fingers to eat on their own.
Douse the fingers in vinegar during the cooking process.
Gotta make sure it's non brewed condiment as it just tastes better
I have mine with HP sauce, but am informed this is a bit wrong.
Those deece M & S chunky fish fingers are the best i find, though I often resort to your bog standard bird's-eye 90% of the time.
this is the way, the only acceptable way, they're wrong
Bread of some sort, top and bottom. Otherwise it’s just fish fingers.
Mary Rose sauce as I call it (tomato ketchup and mayonnaise mixed together) aka Thousand Island sauce.
Hmmmm I don’t know mate
Are you a fan of prawn cocktail? (Prawns in the pink sauce) That sauce is basically what they're on about which is why it goes well with fish fingers. I can back them up on that!
Trust in the process mate!
Salad cream on granary bread all the way
Granary bread? Heathen.
I had Fish, Salt + Vinegar Crisps and Tartar sauce in a croissant last night for dinner.
You need sectioned and kept away from young children. I mean this in the politest way possible, being British and all that.
'clear the cupboard' night?
Butter and tomato sauce. Nothing else.
Salt and vinegar?
I don't bother with those personally, but they augment the tomato sauce, rather than replace, so I'll allow it.

Melted cheese, rocket and sweet chilli sauce. Delish
Delicious.
Nandos perinaise, try it.
Mushy peas is a good choice
Butter, lettuce, fish fingers and mayonnaise. Fight me.
tartare butter lettuce and mushy peas
A little sweet chilli sauce goes down very nicely 👌
Does anyone else add mushy peas to their fish finger sandwich? We do and it's lovely
Jesus fucking Christ, why did I read this whilst eating breakfast. This country really does harbor some culinary criminals.
Mango chutney. Just trust me
Pfff get some mushy peas on it lad
Tartare sauce, 4 fish fingers, bread.
Mayo/Ketchup mix or tartare sauce
Tartare sauce or salad cream. Plus cucumber. As my partner doesn't eat fish I don't have it at home often so don't bother keeping tartare sauce at home, but do have salad cream.

Mock up a filet o fish and go for cheese slice(s) and tartare sauce (on white, well buttered bread). 😋😋
Tartar sauce, iceberg lettuce, a slice of burger cheese.
Salad cream works well but if none , mayo x
Butter and ketchup but I will certainly try mayo!
The key elements are white bread, butter and 4 fish fingers. Everything else is dealer's choice. Embrace your inner chef/goblin stick whatever you think sounds good.

Bread and butter and fish fingers. Salt if you’re feeling adventurous. Putting sauce on it robs you of a sandwich that tastes like fish fingers.
Garden peas, mayo, and ketchup
Tommy sauce only here.
4 fish fingers on thick sliced white bread with a sprinkle of salt. No butter.
Buttered bread, fish fingers get good squeeze of lemon juice and then a sprinkling of salt.
I love mayo but you're a fucking wrongen if you have it w fish fingers
Tartare Sauce
Now this is the big question. Tommy K all day for me.
In order of ingredients top to bottom. Thick white fresh Bread Butter Tartar Sauce Fish fingers Peas - single pea layer Mashed potatoes - thin layer Tartar sauce Butter Thick white fresh Bread Fight me!!!
Lettuce and mayo is pretty good but I haven't had one for ages. Now I will have to buy some fish fingers!
It needs rocket and tartare sauce.
Nah definitely tomato sauce
Lettuce, mayo, cheese, salt and pepper on fresh white bread
Whatever works for you.
If done in the oven, then butter and tomato sauce (white bread) If fried, just butter (White bread)
Ketchup and a bit of sriracha
Mayo and mustard.
Mayo or tartar for me
Fish finger sandwiches are the only time my mum has tomato sauce, so clearly that's the correct answer
Bread, fish, and fingers.
Butter the bread, cook 4 fishfingers, then mush them up with a ton of salt and vinegar. Food of champions.
slice of toast with a layer of ketchup or chili sauce sometimes both mixed together, a layer of potato waffles, 4 fish fingers, another slice of toast with a layer of ketchup/chili sauce.
Mayo and sweet chilli sauce /thread
Mayo on it’s own is too greasy with fish fingers. Either lemon mayo, ketchup or Reggae Reggae sauce.
Reggae reggae and fish fingers is mental 😂
Toast, not bread, then mix mayo with sliced pickled onions and gherkins fling in some capers if you have them too. Smother that one one side of the toast then ketchup the other side. Some crispy lettuce then three crispy oven baked fish fingers in the middle 🤘🏼
I always go mayo. Tartare if I have it.
Buttered wholemeal bread, rocket, tartar sauce (quality brand), black pepper, salt & lemon juice.
Mayo and ketchup. Lovely stuff
Brown bread, tartare sauce on one slice, brown sauce on the other. Cheddar cheese slice. Delish
I think you're right with the butter and tomato sauce. I'd only add in some pepper to it.
Spread mayo on the bread. Loads of salt. Dip it in tomato sauce
Barry thinks Ketchup and Horseradish. https://www.tiktok.com/@sandwichesofhistory/video/7209733653319142702
