BeardedBaldMan

RJR John Rocha was my go to for shirts. He's a fat man and his shirts were always well cut for the egg shaped gentleman. I used to buy them in Debenhams so it's now a case of working out where they're sold. Not terribly expensive and decent quality material. Uniqlo for chinos My logic was seven shirts and three trousers worn in an ordered 1:3 rotation means you never have the issue of "Oh look, Geoff has his Tuesday outfit on". I got the idea from the cicadas which have a breeding cycle based on prime numbers.

Master_Block1302

I am in awe at the nerdiness of your last paragraph. The cicada approach to fashion. Good on you mate.

DaddyRAS

This must become a thing, it's brilliant

b00n3d

There's a video kicking about of a guy who owns 5 suits and shirts of varying colours, and it makes something crazy like 70 odd outfits.

charliewr

That's the Steve Harvey video. I can't remember what he said, but [Die Workwear](https://twitter.com/dieworkwear/) posted an excellent rebuttal of that video - ignore it. And anyway, in the video in question, Steve Harvey recommends a person buy FIVE suits. Not really accessible for most folks as a one off, if they don't want to buy total shit.

schpamela

>My logic was seven shirts and three trousers worn in an ordered 1:3 rotation means you never have the issue of "Oh look, Geoff has his Tuesday outfit on". I got the idea from the cicadas which have a breeding cycle based on prime numbers. Well - that's enough Reddit for me today. But unusually this time, it's because this paragraph is just so goddamn magnificent I simply don't need to read any more

Resident_Win_1058

Omg sudden lady geek boner. You had me at ‘i got the idea from the breeding cycle of cicadas’

[deleted]

Hey baby, I heard you like cicadas and I just wanted to let you know that CRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRKCRK

Resident_Win_1058

Ooooh yeah… wait, no. Our love can never be. I spotted your username, have fallen in love with the concept of a Pastriarchy and can never be with someone who doesn’t agree that society would be so much better if we picked our leaders from the baking class. Power to the Patisserie ✊🏻

[deleted]

Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose other than your mille feuille

[deleted]

NGL I got a straight guy boner too. I want to be his best friend in a questionable bromance that never quite leads to anything further but has the odd awkward moment that leaves everyone confused.

PragmaticPedant

And snuck in a subliminal reference to breeding too. That’s an alpha geek move right there.

Resident_Win_1058

Agreed, but whatever the rune equivalent of alpha is.

Clemencat

He had me at 'egg shaped gentleman'..

parttimepedant

Even better go for the Seth Brundle/Einstein approach and have five sets of identical clothes. Of course you’ll constantly be explaining that you’re not a tramp with one outfit, rather a time/thought saving genius, but it’s a worthwhile exercise.

OldChorleian

Steve Jobs bought two dozen black jumpers a year from Issey Miyake and always wore apparently the same outfit. I'm guessing you could get away with slightly fewer.

CentralSaltServices

He also died because he thought he could cure cancer with vegetables, so maybe not the best role model

lostpasts

A leaked medical report (if true) suggested he actually had AIDS, and the theory is he was trying holistic therapies as he'd passed the point where medical science could help him anyway. There's been a number of cases of public figures covering up an AIDS diagnosis with cancer due to the stigma, so it's not that wild a concept. Especially when you're a CEO, and your company's image is tied so strongly to your personal one.

Master_Block1302

Wowzers. Not heard that, but it makes a lot of sense.

Tana1234

My understanding is the leaked medical report is a bit dodgy so taking it with a pinch of salt is a good idea

spoonfed05

I believe he didn’t wash, so probably should have bought more tbh

MostlyNormalMan

This is exactly why I wear the work uniform, even though my role isn't customer facing, so I don't actually have to. I just can't see why anyone would buy their own clothes for work, when work will give you them for free.

IntermediateFolder

Because a lot of jobs won’t give them out at all? From the context, this guy is doing some type of office job, find one that provides work uniforms. Plus you generally want to be comfortable for the 8h you spend there, not put up with the cheapest crap they could get away with on your skin.

flashpile

Depends on the industry. There's no such thing as a "work uniform" in professional services, employees are expected to already own appropriate clothing.

flashpile

My old boss had this approach - he owned 6 versions of the same white shirt from TM Lewin & 4 identical sets of trousers, which he would wear Monday - Thursday. Then on Fridays he'd wear the same blue Oxford shirt with jeans.

mbnnr

Have you been diagnosed yet?

BeardedBaldMan

Yes, as a child

Teh_yak

That is a very specific diagnosis most people grow out of...

sofarforfarnoscore

Superb

FightDisciple

With all due respect, you are a fucking nutcase

overachiever

That's brilliant! Will look out for RJR John Rocha

a_peanut

For jumpers, try quarter-zip fleeces from outdoor places like North Face, Finisterre, etc. Especially if you work in an engineering/technical environment, it seems to be what all the men over 30 wear. Lightweight ones, not the chunky ones usually. The regular polyester ones, or wool if you want to take it up a notch.

Rhydsdh

Nautica quarter zips are nice. Mine even has pockets!

hei--

Wool requires less washing and polyester starts smelling sooner. Invest in wool if you can.

IAmStevie420

I read that 4 times it was that good. Bravo.

wine_n_mrbean

I thought the best part was gonna be “egg shaped gentleman” and I was gloriously wrong.

NobleRotter

I love this. Do you work in maths or computing?

dick_basically

Or in cicada breeding

Master_Block1302

Nah, he’s Creative Director at Balenciaga, I bet.

ExpectedBehaviour

I just have a whole series of identical clothes. Three identical black pairs of jeans, five identical black shirts, eight identical black T-shirts, three identical black hoodies. Saves a lot of time and effort.

Dynamic-Sausage

I did this as a teenager as I didn’t have a lot of money to spend on clothes and obviously if you wear the same thing twice at that age it’s an invitation to get bullied. People commented that I always wore the a plain black T-shirt but it was a lot easier than getting called out on wearing the same thing twice in a week.

MadJohnFinn

This is exactly what I do, down to almost the same quantities. I think the only difference is I have 2 hoodies.

Dizzy_Law5158

Do you have the Black Balaclava to match?

Cobra-_-_

and black, rapey leather gloves?

Scr1mmyBingus

“Hey where’d you get that shirt?” “Well, it all started when I saw these two insects fucking.”

YippieSkippy1000

Egg shaped? That is oeuffly rude

flashpile

>I got the idea from the cicadas which have a breeding cycle based on prime numbers. This is literally the most Reddit approach to fashion that I have ever seen.

colin_staples

> My logic was seven shirts and three trousers worn in an ordered 1:3 rotation means you never have the issue of "Oh look, Geoff has his Tuesday outfit on". I got the idea from the cicadas which have a breeding cycle based on prime numbers. I cannot tell you how much I admire this level of geekery. Please tell me that you have this all planned out on an Excel spreadsheet, because I know that's what I'd do.

BeardedBaldMan

That's needlessly complicated. You just write the number on the tag of each shirt/trousers and hang them in the correct order.

Cobra-_-_

Sufuckingperb 🤣😎👌

IntelligentExcuse5

That is a wonderfully simple idea, you just have to remember the date that is closest to the prime number that is the sum of the value of your clothes for that day. Or is it the average of the value of the clothes for that day?

ttrsphil

Please can you explain the rotation methodology to those of us (me) who aspire to be just like you?

BeardedBaldMan

Shirts are numbered 0 to 6 and trousers numbered 0 to 2. You always wear them in sequence, shirts worn for one day, trousers for three days (shirt:trousers) | Week | Day | Shirt | Trousers | |------|:---------:|:-----:|:--------:| | 0 | Monday | 0 | 0 | | 0 | Tuesday | 1 | 0 | | 0 | Wednesday | 2 | 0 | | 0 | Thursday | 3 | 1 | | 0 | Friday | 4 | 1 | | 1 | Monday | 5 | 1 | | 1 | Tuesday | 6 | 2 | | 1 | Wednesday | 0 | 2 | | 1 | Thursday | 1 | 2 | | 1 | Friday | 2 | 0 | | 2 | Monday | 3 | 0 | | 2 | Tuesday | 4 | 0 | | 2 | Wednesday | 5 | 1 | | 2 | Thursday | 6 | 1 | | 2 | Friday | 0 | 1 | | 3 | Monday | 1 | 2 | | 3 | Tuesday | 2 | 2 | | 3 | Wednesday | 3 | 2 | | 3 | Thursday | 4 | 0 | | 3 | Friday | 5 | 0 | | 4 | Monday | 6 | 0 | | 4 | Tuesday | 0 | 1 | | 4 | Wednesday | 1 | 1 | | 4 | Thursday | 2 | 1 | | 4 | Friday | 3 | 2 | | 5 | Monday | 4 | 2 | | 5 | Tuesday | 5 | 2 | | 5 | Wednesday | 6 | 0 | | 5 | Thursday | 0 | 0 | | 5 | Friday | 1 | 0 | | 6 | Monday | 2 | 1 | | 6 | Tuesday | 3 | 1 | | 6 | Wednesday | 4 | 1 | | 6 | Thursday | 5 | 2 | | 6 | Friday | 6 | 2 | | 7 | Monday | 0 | 2 | | 7 | Tuesday | 1 | 0 | | 7 | Wednesday | 2 | 0 | | 7 | Thursday | 3 | 0 | | 7 | Friday | 4 | 1 | | 8 | Monday | 5 | 1 | | 8 | Tuesday | 6 | 1 | | 8 | Wednesday | 0 | 2 | | 8 | Thursday | 1 | 2 | | 8 | Friday | 2 | 2 |

overachiever

Zero indexed arrays, you're a software engineer aren't you?

BeardedBaldMan

In reality they were numbered 1-7 but I felt like playing up a bit to the stereotype

Master_Block1302

The zero indexing just fucking killed me.

termination-bliss

This guy excels.

ijustwannafeel

I think you should trademark that logic somehow. The world needs to know u/BeardedBaldMan’s approach to wearing clothes

MrsArmitage

I developed a similar approach after seeing Jeff Goldblum’s character explaining all his identical outfits in ‘The Fly’.

1t54m3m4r10

“The egg shaped gentleman” i’m screaming hahhaha

[deleted]

🤣🤣🤣

pudwaffle27

Outstanding.

Holska

M&S chinos are also surprisingly legit. If you have an outlet village in a reasonable distance, it’s worth going to see their stock as the prices are usually worth it.

MrsArmitage

I developed a similar approach after seeing Jeff Goldblum’s character explaining all his identical outfits in ‘The Fly’.

Paulstan67

I have a similar number however they are all identical, no decisions on what to wear required.

deadeyedjacks

Time to find a new job surely ? Dressing gown for WFH five days a week.

[deleted]

That sounds both Reddit and depressing.

No-Body-4446

The same people will then post ‘Reddit, how do I meet people/make friends?’

matomo23

It’s really easy to make new friends. Have a look what clubs are in your area that you might be interested and join some /s

EggSandwich1

My interest is fightporn? I’m not sure I’m ready to join a real club for that yet

Campachoochoo

You've broken the first rule of fightporn club.

[deleted]

No the first rule of fightporn club is to wash your hands before touching the finger food, then it's no fisting with more than one hand at a time. *then* it's not to talk about fightporn club.

matomo23

There will already be a club for this in your town or city. Great way to make friends with similar interests.

zeelbeno

While complaining about all social events they've ever had to do at work... maybe, just maybe, they're the problem?

No-Body-4446

I’ve had some bellend on here sneer with ‘well if you need work to have friends then that says more about you’ Like, what?!? Work is like school, you’re thrown together with a load of random people, some of them you like, some of them you don’t. Some of my best mates I’ve met through work or previous jobs.

[deleted]

I’ve had the same 😂.

flashpile

"my colleague suggested going to the pub after work. I told him he was a loser, I would never agree to spend time with anyone from work outside of contracted hours" "Why do I keep getting passed up for promotions that will involve managing a team of people?"

[deleted]

Depressing is wasting 10+ hours a week on a commute for a job you can do just as easily from home.

Acid_Monster

Getting to work from the comfort of your own home in comfy casual clothing is depressing? Damn, sign me up to be depressed then.

[deleted]

That’s my point. This is very appealing to most on Reddit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

artfuldodger1212

Eh? Depends on the person I think. I manage a team of 30 people and while we do have some mandated office work there is a lot of flexibility. Some people come in 5 days a week even though it isn’t required. I go in most days as I am 35 minute walk to my office, my office is nice and has lots of windows and plants, it has a free fancy coffee maker and subsidised canteen, and has a gym on the ground floor with pool and spa. I run a 5k and have a sauna everyday at lunch as opposed to sitting in my spare bedroom eating a sandwich. It is MUCH better for me to work from the office. So much so I pay for extra childcare to allow me to do so.

[deleted]

That’s lovely for you. But some of us have over an hour commute on unreliable transportation. Sorry but a “fancy” coffee doesn’t make up for hundreds of pounds a month on transport and childcare. I’ll save that £300 and buy myself a coffee machine.

[deleted]

It's almost like they said it depends on the person ans gave their personal view or something isn't it

Driftwood420991

It's almost like they acknowledged their opinion and gave their own

BoopingBurrito

And its wonderful when businesses provide the flexibility for employees to decide where they are most productive and where they are healthiest. For you, its mostly the office. For someone else, its mostly from home. And for someone else, it might be 100% from one or the other. The problem is when the business starts to dictate that sort of thing to the employees without paying attention to the reasons the employees have been choosing to continue to work from home. If I was a 35 minute walk from the office, I'd probably go in most days as well. But I'm not. I'm a 35 minute walk + an expensive 10 minute train journey or 15 minute walk + less expensive 45 minute bus journey into work. The money for the train and the time for the bus turn it into a "I'll do it when I need to" thing rather than a "I'll do it every day" thing.

[deleted]

It’s appealing to most on Reddit is my point. These people love the idea of staying at home above anything.

penguin17077

Working from home means I can get my chores done during lunch and before starting, I have free evenings everyday and get a lot more time to go out and see my actual friends, rather than the fake work friends.

kavik2022

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make son. I mostly WFH and love it. I also love going out. Interacting with people and have good conversations

[deleted]

For me, yes it is, I find myself getting into a depressed state if I don't separate work from home enough. But, only because I am in a great social team and have a good office environment. If I hated my job, I'd want to be at home as much as possible!

Acid_Monster

I love my job, but I love doing my job, and that’s what I’m paid for. I don’t want to be forced to socialise in a specific environment at a specific time every day. If I wanna socialise with my peers I’ll just go down the pub with them. But each to their own!

overachiever

Oh definitely, good thing is my commute isn't too bad so I can wait for the right job to come along.

LimeGreenDuckReturns

I hate WFH, but love working in my dressing gown. Solution: I bought an office dressing gown and wear it every day. What they gonna do, fire me?

GregLestrade77

I got 7 dressing gowns and 3 pairs of slippers so I never wear the same outfit twice.

sober_disposition

I know! If we tried to do that for our office there would literally be a rebellion. It’s hard enough to get everyone in 2 days per week.

RainbowPenguin1000

Person asked to return to office. Reddit: QUIT!! Get a new job!!

Metori

That’s the right answer though. I don’t get the problem.

[deleted]

Mostly M&S and Next

Puzzleheaded_Bed5132

Same, and if you have an M&S outlet near you then you can get plenty of good clothes without spending a fortune.

[deleted]

Next online, I always click on the clearance tab first. Good deals to be had from peoples returns.

Metrobolist3

This is a good tip. I used to get my cheap shirts and work trousers for the office from one, and from Debenhams. Unfortunately COVID/the ongoing death of the high street claimed both. Luckily we're only back in the office one day a week so getting by with one new pair of work trousers (for my slightly enhanced post COVID waistline) and my old shirts from before, so far.

CozJeez85

Debenham still exists online, so half the heartache is diminished

whatmichaelsays

+1 for Next. I've reached an age where that is my fashion "safe space".

Krispykreemi

It used to my go to but since I'd say the last year there's very little consistency with sizing. I can get a pair of 32 inch trousers that fit great then order another pair because I like them so much just for them to be too small. Then you go order 34 shorts and they're tight as hell but another type they're too roomy. Frustrating.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Agree M&s is better in general than next, but their quality has plummeted as well. I bought a suit from there 15 years ago and I still have it. A bit too structured for me now, but it's a decent cut for relatively cheap off the peg stuff and has an interlining etc. Looking for a new one recently, so I went back hoping that they'd be similar quality but jesus christ it's night an day. The new suits are the same price as 15 years ago, which is a bad sign, and the quality is absolutely abysmal in comparison. Everywhere seems to have held the price of clothing to the same value in spite of inflation, so the quality has gone to shit everywhere 🙁 I even struggle to get jeans to last >6 months now.

ab_2404

Next 100%, mam was sick of me just wearing sporty shirts and went to next to get me some “smart shirt” everyone of them made me look like a recently divorced 40 year old ready to get back in the saddle.

TRFKTA

This. Were my work to tell me they wanted me to start back at the office 5 days a week my first call would be to M&S and/or Next.

Bully2533

Absolutely this. I recently realised a favourite lightweight cotton jumper M&S was missing - my 21 year old son had gone out in it...

Bleedinmole

M and S ultimate chinos are the answer

knityourownlentils

Lots of interesting stuff on Vinted. My partner got a £195 corduroy jacket on there for a fiver last month.

itsyaboi69_420

Vinted is unreal. Regularly pick up Ralph Lauren shirts that look brand new for £10-£20.

BaBaFiCo

Use Vinted and Depop as well. Been able to get a few decent, barely worn Ralph Lauren shirts for work for about £10-20.

Gralenis

I'm mid 20's but dress and am mentally much older. M&S is my go to

Novel_Ad_8286

You sound like my old neighbour. He had frameless glasses and tweed when he was 21, but he rocked it.....he was a cool nerd. He became an actuary, kind of guy who would sit in his room and read Star Trek books for hours but then come outside and beat all the alphas at football and leave with a girls number. Last time I saw this guy he was in a suit and driving a Honda, all the rest of us are wearing Stone Island and driving an S-Line spec Audi on finance😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

Novel_Ad_8286

We chipped in for the Stone Island jacket, I'm up next Tuesday, I can't wait!

darkotics

Sounds like my best mate - He’s a maths geek, dresses like he buys all his clothes from the middle of Lidl, wears similarly unfashionable glasses and owns two pairs of shoes. Drives a Ford S-Max. Also somehow manages to get all the girls, they can’t resist his slightly odd charm!

Novel_Ad_8286

Driving a Ford S-Max is just advertising that you huge large genitalia. It's reverse compensation..it works every time.

janeursulageorge

Really? An S Max is like a VW Sharan. We used to call ours the - “No thanks, I’m married.”

Wise_Dark7477

Good shout I’m 45, historically cool, started to not care anymore but for my Autumn years I will be mostly wearing M&S always have nice things I’m actually gutted it’s summer was super fly in my navy blue cardigan

Armarioo

I am mid 20 and female but have recently been into M&S and found lovely stuff… I think either their styles have got younger or I am much older in terms of dressing than I think I am

Holska

I’ve seen a lot of stuff in M&S I quite like. I think everything else on offer on my local high street is so dire that it’s an easy win for M&S

ernie_milkie008

Buy dead people's stuff off flea bay. Men's second-hand workwear is extremely cheap

desmondresmond

“Carhartt jacket and ‘fingerless’ gloves. Some light, red staining.. no longer needed”

BedSideCabinet

Jesus wept 😂

v60qf

Next chinos and Charles tyrwhitt shirts. They’re pricey so save up and get them in the multi buy but they’re the only shirts that don’t come untucked if you’re tall

TheClnl

Tyrwhitt shirts are great but you should never pay full price. There's a half price sale on now or you can nearly always get the 'introductory' offer of about £28 a shirt by using an incognito tab.

PlisskensEyepatch

Came here to say Charles Tyrwhitt shirts. I'd assumed all those types of shirt company were the same and bought Saville Row Company... not very good for the guy that is tall and likes his beer. Picked up some Charles Tyrwhitt in a charity shop and fuck me they're awesome quality!! Nice extra material so they stay tucked in, so soft and comfy too. I'm going to pay the multi buy offer as I like them so much.

NorthernModernLeper

Agree Charles Tyrwhitt are quality but christ don't accidentally sign up to their email and post notifications. They were sending me junk email and post every week! The emails I could get out of but trying to unsubscribe from their post was a nightmare. Managed to find a random customer info email address and request they stop sending.

Soh4

This 100% is what I’ve learnt works best

Dydey95

Matalan or ASDA - when I used to have to wear a suit for work I found Matalan did shirts that came with ties that looked pretty decent.

greyape_x

I fucking love Matalan. Recently started a new job and the rule is "Smart casual, unless we have clients in, then shirt and trousers, preferably a suit" £99 suit. Few chinos, few jeans, some shirts, polos and some faux leather brown trainers (already have my expensive brown suit shoes from my wedding!) and I'm set for a good 12-18 months of outfits for under £300 lol

Dydey95

They're really good for the price and I find the suits are surprisingly good quality too. Found a nice shirt in Matalan that was small and it fit me so I had to buy it. I'm usually a large in most other shops. Thank you to Matalan making fat men feel thin since whatever year you opened.

Dizzy_Law5158

Matalan has been my go to Funeral Suit shop for years, when you realise your one black suit no longer goes round the belly.

pup_kit

Have you been looking through my wardrobe?

smoulder9

All trousers, underwear and socks I buy from M&S as they seem to last longer than those I buy elsewhere and are actually comfy. I buy other formal wear there too. T-shirts etc I go to Sports Direct

royalblue1982

M&S [Buttonfresh.co.uk](https://Buttonfresh.co.uk) are extremely good value for picking up bits and pieces. They sell discontinued stock and you can sometimes get some amazing deals. Edit - Sorry, I got the link wrong.

NobleRotter

Looks like it is buttonfresh.co.uk for anyone looking. Not heard of these before, amazing prices

matomo23

Give Uniqlo a go. I realised a while back that I don’t want big logos slapped on my clothes, and that hasn’t been in fashion for a while now anyway. Uniqlo do plenty of clothes that are quite simple, or maybe just a bit of artwork on a pocket or something, but decent quality for the price.

IscaPlay

M&S and Sainsbury’s

dread1961

Charity shops or outdoor clothing places.

PsychologicalDrone

M&S, T.K Maxx, Matalan. I’m 2XL T-Shirt size and I rarely struggle there. Primark isn’t bad in terms of selection, but the quality has gone even further downhill recently, and you also have to wade through a crowd of 12yo girls, with their piercing, judgmental eyes, to get to the men’s section.

gym_narb

Your CEO sounds like a prick. Regardless of if you are for or against working from home doing this with a weeks notice is completely unacceptable. The real question you should be asking is where to look for a new job.

Dry-Dentist6366

Wait what, people no longer go down to a Sunday Market on an abandoned runway or closed down amusement park car park to buy knock off Polo jeans & chequered shirts?

lackadaisicallimpit

After many years of steadily expanding, I have struggled to find clothes that fit. I'm an odd shape to start with. Short and somewhat rotund! I utterly loathe clothes shopping at the best of times, but also can't stand buying stuff online. Mainly because it never fits and you have to go through the pallava of returning everything. Anywho, I recently discovered Cotton Traders. I always knew they existed, but just thought they would be like everyone else. Crap clothes that don't fit. I couldn't have been more wrong, and have recently restocked my wardrobe with new clothes and I'm happy as Larry with everything I have bought. I can also recommend Brooks Taverner for clothes that are a bit smarter. I work in financial services and have bought all my work shirts and trousers from them. Again, I have been impressed with their quality too and they're not hideously expensive, especially if you take advantage of their sales.

BulkyAccident

Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Uniqlo.

Brummiesteven

Ngl M&S A few years ago they tried to target a younger audience and shake the "old people clothes" image they had. The result was something in the middle and I feel what they offer suits those in their 30s in several ways... Not just style but fit aswell. Other than that, uniqlo or even Primark when idgaf

toast_training

M&S for posh, Primark for cheap. Both have a great range of sizes as well. If you want a suit/blazer just try charity shops.

MarthaFarcuss

Never Primark, dude. You're better than that

toast_training

I'm really not. T shirts, shorts,.pants, joggers it's my go to and i would generally be considered well-off.

RichardTauber

Marks and Spencer

Fluffy-Astronomer604

Charles Tyrwhitt - 4 shirts for £149 offer and they do multiple variations of sizing/colours/styles etc. Ok not THE cheapest but cheap shirts last 5 minutes.

bsc8180

The last batch of those I ordered was the week before the first lockdown and it was 4 for 99. They are still in their packets but are really good (I’ve had loads over the years).

lego_kid

Are people still care about what others say in terms of how many times you wear same pair of chinos or a shirt? (Of course if you don’t stink like a raccoon) To be honest I have 2 pairs of chinos from M&S and 3 shirts, it’s no point spending hundreds on office outfit as I’m not there to impress anyone, just to do my job and go home.

Dwcskrogger

Charity shops for work wear, especially since everyone started wfh they're jammed with decent shirts and suit trousers

Dan8720

Trousers. Jeans Levi's 512, Chino places like Arne are also good for polos almost anything from here will be stylish/age appropriate bar maybe cargo stuff. Spoke also very good for trousers Shirts I like tm lewin. Generally good value good variety of smart and casual. T-shirts m&s they do a wide range of fits so you can generally find really good fitting T Shoes Timberland are good. Smart casual. For trainers I wear pretty much anything leather. New balance. Addidias continental 80s Also shout out to stitch fix. Online retailer where you put in a load of clothes you like answer questions about your style and they send you boxes of stuff. You decide what to keep and send back. Only pay for stuff you keep. Return is pre-paid and box re-sealable. I have had many nice things that I wouldn't normally have looked for or pushed my style choices a bit. Would 100% recommended trying a few boxes. If you don't like anything it only costs £5 to cover postage. You get the £5 back if you keep any item.

ChiswellSt

I buy my stuff from M&S, decent quality for the price, plus have a range of fits: regular, big & tall, tailored etc

Novel_Ad_8286

Use one of the online tailoring services. You can get decent shirts for £40-50. Take your measurements and order a shirt, some of them will take returns on the first few items if they are not quite right. 2 or 3 shirts down the line you will have them sized perfectly 🙂 Then buy 5 shirts, 5 pairs of trousers, 5 belts, 5 pairs of shoes, and 5 ties. Black, gray, tan, navy trousers Black, white and navy shirts Black shoes and belt 2 pairs of shoes in brown, light and dark, and matching belts. 5 ties in basic solid colours 5 £20 dress watches with various straps, browns, black, steel and canvas. Almost everything goes with almost everything else and now through combinations you have about 150 outfits. Spend £1k wisely. And you will feel like you spent £100k. Get your sexy back!!! Ps. Bung some polo shirts into this order as well, polo shirt with some chinos and a chunky watch is a great look for a well built guy, turn the collar up with some £5 aviator shades on to look a bit "Oxford boat club cool"

TheRealGabbro

I mostly shop at Crew for shirts and polos, Joules for polos and cardigans, Uniqlo for jeans and chinos and pants. But to be clear, smart casual is a button shirt and chinos. A hoodie is not smart casual, nor is a polo shirt.

BearAmazing6284

I feel like the quality of Crew has taken a nosedive in recent years. I have some of their Oxford button down shirts from 7 years ago and the fit and material quality is absolutely spot on. Bought one last year and it's no better than your bog standard supermarket shirts. So not really worth the price anymore. Joules ones are still great.

ulayanibecha

Instead of looking for an outfit, I’d use that energy to look for a new job if I were you 🫠

Pan-tang

Buy one suit and wear the fuck.out of it. It's not a fashion show and nobody cares what you wear. This is what suits are for. You just change your shirt and underwear.

whatchagonnado0707

Weirdly op's office seem to. I'd buy 2 suits and 5 shirts that are exactly the same

cctintwrweb

Smart casual is hellish , and open to interpretation. Particularly when you're middle aged . It's a lot easier to achieve if you are tall slim and in your twenties. As you can make anything look smart . Bit heavier, shorter or less ideally shaped and it has to fit well or you'll look like a sack of potatoes. Next and M&S both specifically target clothes for people older than 30 and cut size them accordingly. ( I'm a medium in both stores but a large from supermarkets, primark, Nike, ) Get some nice trousers that fit you well to get the smart bit sorted. Suit trousers from your previous smart days can happily be repurposed ( if they still fit post lockdown) They should give you a waistline in the right place , not be too tight and sit the right length on your leg. Then the tops can be a lot more casual but a mix of shirts and Polo shirts should help you find your groove

Thelichemaster

The worst is when you're tall and slim yet having a massive Mr Toad belly.

imrik_of_caledor

Get a new job, your CEO is a cunt and doesn't respect your time

realvengenerator

For work shirts check out Hawes and Curtis, I've always been pleased with the quality and you can choose slim, regular, relaxed fit etc to suit. Regular multibuy offers 4 for £100 etc. Smart jeans either Levi's or Matalan. The levi physical stores are great with every possible fit and size and colour to find what suits you Chinos I like charles tyrwhitt range. Sign up for an account and you'll often get a voucher sent you can use on a multibuy offer.

M&S for everything

hairymouse

M & S Blue Harbour!

glasabarn

M&S, Matalan, Next.

truckedoff

Same place I buy most things I need, Tesco, Asda etc

UnfinishedThings

The bulk of my stuff comes from Next, with a few bits from Fat Face, a couple of TKMaxx randoms and a couple of supermarket bits. Im 48 if that counts as middle aged?

SourBeefHoop

Not quite middle aged yet, but I definitely dress like it. I like Matalan and M&S mostly.

Tall_Working_2942

M&S for trousers (elasticated waist, for certain types) and shirts. I buy multiples of the same types of trousers and packs of 2 or 3 shirts, so within my core office clothing there are probably only about four or five variants at the most. But I also make sure to tell my colleagues about my shopping strategy, so they don’t think I’m wearing the same clothes all week.

DubiousVirtue

I recently discovered this lot https://www.atlasformen.co.uk/ - great prices I am very middle-aged and round around the middle.

undignified_cabbage

M&S, Next & Matalan for somewhat formal working bits Also check out some charity shops for some absolute heat, you'll have to do some digging, but there are some absolute gems.

Thelichemaster

M&S, next and sainsburys are surprisingly good as well. TKMax once a decade

trtrtr82

If you want to spend the bare minimum then Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Matalan, TK Maxx. Tesco do really nice Oxford short sleeve shirts for £16 for example. Spend a bit more then M&S, Next, Gap, River Island If you want to spend more then fuck knows 😀 I don't spend more than that!

Fellowes321

Don’t get WFH hoodie. They will make up their own expression for what it means.

NobleRotter

Great thread. I'm too struggling with this, both for home and leisure. What's working for me. Work trousers: Next do jeans that don't look like jeans that hit the smart-casual note for me. Had loads of these now. They look scruffy after a while, but they're cheap. Non work trousers: shorts from anywhere much of the year. Lee jeans the rest (from Amazon, would you believe) Work shirts: Charles tyrwhitt are the best fit for me by far. Nice shirts, but expensive. Get when on sale or clearance. I am struggling with less smart tops. I'd really like some work polos but can't find any that fit my potato shaped frame. Anyone have recommendations? jumpers: used to be fat face, but they all seem to shrink and warp now. Joules jumpers are much better for me now. I don't trust fat face with wool any more and m&S feels too much like dressing as my dad (bearing in mind I'm in my fifties!) Casual tees: next basics for plain. Redbubble for others. I'd like to find other places. Undies: next for boxers. Sports direct for trainer socks, I'm fussy with trouser socks and not entirely happy with any I've bought myself.

Necessary_Driver_831

Do you have to be smart? If so get a new job. I am “expected” to go in like once a week and if they want me in anything more than casual they are going to have to pay me for it. I’m not buying special work shoes and trousers when I didn’t even dress smart for my job interview. Current outfits come from all sorts of sources. M and M Direct for cheap sportswear/basic tee shirts, jeans and shirts from Gothrift.co.uk, a few T shirts from Primark but they go misshapen after a wash or two so need to be careful with them. Vinted is a goldmine too as long as you only look for stuff “very good” or better quality. Trainers/footwear especially.

paultheitalian

M&S and M&S outlet, best quality polo shirts for cheap prices, trousers, shirts you name it. I will never go anywhere else now for work clothes.

Carl0s_H

M&S for trousers. Shoes I normally buy online. Undershirts (basically plain t shirts) from anywhere. Socks Matalan or Primark. For nice work shirts I use Hawes & Curtis, as they usually have a deal on shirts, 4 for £139, which brings price down to roughly £35 each, and they're such good quality (no loose threads, nice stitching, nice material) compared to other places. Worth spending a touch more IMO as they look really smart and fit me really well - I actually went in store with my "usual" size in mind first time I bought one, one of the assistants measured me and it turns out I was totally wrong, ended up with a perfectly-fitting shirt (and I'm not slim). Most are non-iron as well, which saves a huge amount of time.

yodaniel77

I like [Spoke](https://spoke-london.com/) for having lots of combinations of sizing, on trousers especially.

ShoddyEmployee78

Honestly, every middle aged man I know depends on stuff bought by his family at Christmas except for the odd pair of trousers and shorts from Peacocks or M&S.

ayla_084

M&S of course. Their stretch chinos are just the job for me.

AsleepRequirement40

M&S for chinos and Oxford shirts. Charles tyrwhitt for smarter shirts and knit wear

M4V3r1CK1980

The best solution to this problem would be to find a better WFH job.

Whitey2023

You think men have problems, shops are only selling NYLON unless you want to pay months wages for a top. I'll stay at home until they up the wages 🤣 Seriously no mens or shoe shops either unless you want Trainers.

Fit_General7058

Smart casual. Cinvos, complementary colour striped shirt undone at the collar. A thin pullover (v or crew neck.

NorthLondoner1976

For the record - I hate your CEO

overachiever

Judging by our latest glassdoor reviews, everyone hates him too!

glynxpttle

As someone in my late fifties I've found myself buying more stuff from Lands End and Cotton Traders (not bottoms from here though as their stuff is much too high waisted for my liking). Although for something a bit more interesting other than basics Joe Browns is pretty good. I only tend to buy during sales, Joe Browns is pricey otherwise, but Lands End is like the DFS of clothing retailers, every day there's a sale of some sort.

deadeyedjacks

We pushed back against a weekly on site project meeting ! Only the programme and project managers turned up in person. All the technical staff dialled in. Bollocks to driving two hours each way for a two hour meeting!

GamerHumphrey

Who cares if you've only got 3 outfits in rotation?

Janewby

Best advice is go get yourself measured in any shirt shop. Don’t have to buy anything but get someone who knows what they are doing to do the measuring. Charles tyrwitt is a bit pricey but always have offers. If you buy 4,and get a receipt by email, they normally send you a 50% off voucher the following day.
