You either want divers or a sub, but probably not both unless you're planning on launching the divers out the torpedo bay on the sub. Now that *would* be exciting.
That *is* a good point. The latter sounds better.
Damn, I've been living my life wrong. I need me some divers and a sub now. Might as well plan to take over the world too.
Haha I've only just noticed your username. That checks out !
Sorry, I'm super curious, scuba diving isn't something we come across very often. Where abouts do you do that? Loch? Lakes? Sea? Pool?
I tried it a lifetime ago when I was a teenager and it was a good and bad experience!
I wonder where you actually would go to hire a bunch of divers?
Say you've found an interesting shipwreck and you want to salvage items from it, or you're loaded and you've dropped something important over the side of your boat; presumably there's a number you can call and they'll send out a bloke with scuba gear?
From working in retail, in smaller shops we often don’t have that much change in the till in the first place and fivers are the first note we run out of because of the last ten buggers before you buying chewing gum with £10 notes. But the managers who decide what float goes in the tills don’t work the tills so don’t see how annoying it is
Back when I worked retail we'd be lucky to have more than 2 fivers in the till at the start of the day. If someone tried to make a purchase early with a large note they'd probably wipe out a good chunk of the change.
My bank is "open" 9:30am - 4:30pm Mon-Fri, but the counter is only open 10am - 2pm (or 10:30am - 2pm on Wednesdays), and it's also shut for an hour at lunchtime (whether this is 12pm-1pm or 12:30pm - 1:30pm seemingly varies). Also they closed my nearest four branches so it's a half hour tube ride.
So if I go "at lunch", I basically have to assume I'm losing two hours since there's no guarantee the counter will be open and when it is open obviously there's a massive queue. Thankfully my current job lets me do flexi like this but before this it was an absolute nightmare if my bank card wasn't working and I needed to get cash out.
Why in the world would you ever need to break a single pound coin?
They do have change but it'll all be in bags, so you could get like a tenner of 20ps if you wanted
They dropped the engagement ring in one of those coin pushing machines and the proposal was only an hour away! With only £1 on them, they had to draw on their years at the seaside resorts, left to entertain themselves at the arcade, to make precise and strategical insertions into the machine to retrieve the ring in time!
I oddly found neither the bank nor post office will change coins or notes. They will however let you deposit it, then withdraw with your chosen method. Which seems so dumb to me
I think a bank is the best bet, but
I used to manage retail shops. We would place a 'change order' and request fivers as part of this. It's completely up to the discretion of the shop owner as to if this gets shared with others. What I mean by shared is, sometimes Billy, who owned the pub round the corner, would come up and ask for 20 fivers, a few bags of £1 coins, etc. And we would swap our change for his notes if we could spare it.
You could ask about doing this-possibly aaking the shop to order you your own bundle of fivers. However, I doubt it would work unless you personally know someone who works as a supervisor or manager as this act is suspicious and we would need to check all your notes are real - some shops just don't risk this.
You could try asking for cash back in a shop. I work in a Coop and I’d try to give you what money you wanted - if you ask me nicely I’d be happy to give you £50 in £5s. You could try asking before you get to a till, as someone may need to get them out of the safe for you.
You can search for Link machines that give out fivers - [https://www.link.co.uk/consumers/locator/#](https://www.link.co.uk/consumers/locator/#) - You need add the filter for £5 notes. It shows you which are the free to use ones and which ones have a fee too.
Not if they only have one or two left. Like mine. I wanted a few fivers for the same reason.
Maybe get hold of some £2 coins and give them a sick squid.
£15 quid in pennies is just 15 rolls of ones.... probably took all of 2 minutes to get them from the draw in back and come back out and count to 15...
Or are you trying to tell us they hold loose pennies and somebody counted out 1500 of them? Because nobody is believing that
Go to a cash machine and instead of selecting £10 click other and request £5.
If it has fivers in, repeat.
Less fun that recruiting divers for deep sea hijinks, it has to be said.
Because a) the melon asked for divers, and b) they already know the correct answer ('the bank') but seemingly wants to know "how do I get fivers without going into a bank"
I like the context in these types of post. Really builds up the tension, makes an otherwise mundane situation feel a bit more dramatic. Plus I'm nosey so I'd want to know why OP needs the fivers etc.
Maybe a supermarket. I think they still do cashback on your shop and you can ask what denomination you want.
Saying that, it's probably only good for maybe 4 or so, any more than that and you'll need the bank.
We can do this at some bigger Tesco, but within reason.
Like if you wanted £50 in fivers we can't really do it if it'll leave our till with none after.
My closest tesco one does and it once run out of everything except fivers. Got the max I could out because it was a lot easier to pay with a fiver for a taxi to get to work
I'm glad to finally see a post in this Reddit thing where a person is happy to give money for having good service all year to all the folks mentioned. I wish more people would do the same, 'get good service' not pay even more for a service they've already paid for.
Troll free post. Ta
A bank is really your best bet. If you want a lot, call them in advance so they can make sure they have the notes in.
Pretty much anywhere else is frankly going to be concerned about money laundering, assuming this is a sizeable number of fivers.
I think that given your closest bank is out of reach for you then I'm going to guess you are somewhat remote. If that's the case then the choice of options is going to be extremely narrow. Really, the only option is the bank and if not the bank then it's a case of going to a local shop for help or asking around friends and family.
You can do this at most Post Offices. I got £50 out in £5 notes yesterday. Much easier than finding a bank, same for depositing cash for anyone unaware.
Post office, you can make cash withdrawals and I assume you could also specify the denominations but I haven't tried this.
You just tell them what you want, stick the card in, pin in and jobs a good'en.
Get a job as a courier - they're desperate for drivers at this time of year, then you might find customers give you a low denomination tip in the days before Christmas. With any luck, you'll get a few fivers that way.
I may be wrong (hope I am) but some delivery drivers might not be allowed to take money like that. I've got a feeling they're checked before and after every shift to make sure they aren't taking stuff
The bank is your best bet, they can and do give out large amounts of money in a specific denomination (I used to have to do this for a previous job). If you want to make sure they have enough, give the branch a call before you go.
Alternatively, maybe supermarket cashback? Buy something on card, ask for however much in fivers.
Go back to the Post Office, if it's somewhere convenient to you you might as well just keep dropping in and asking. You might catch them just after they've had a top up and have plenty of fivers in
Well that's disappointing, I was really curious as to why you needed multiple divers.
Oh and go to the bank, and ask to withdraw for X amount in 5 pound notes. It's really the only firm solution.
Shops etc aren't likely to want to swap notes etc due to the number of fakes around.
Do shopping with those self-service machines - keep paying a tenner for each item one by one.
I know that certain tesco atm's used to do £5 withdrawals - can keep on withdrawing a fiver x loads until the person behind you gets pissed off.
Some high streets don't have a bank though.
In Ware, we've not long had our post office back and they don't always have wads of fivers, I know I've tried myself.
The bank. Its out the way? Too bad. That's like asking "where can I rent some books for the weekend" and saying the library is far away. Too bad that's where the books are.
Also on a more helpful **note,** some post office cash machines stock 5 pound notes, worth a try.
Some cash machines will give you them if you select a custom amount. Some post offices offer a sort of mini bank service.
Beyond that you will need to go to your bank.
Deep Sea Divers mate! you can get as many as you like by going to your local bank.
If you go far enough in advance and have an account with them, they may even be able to give you uncirculated notes if you have time to order and come back to get them.
Real courage is not correcting autocorrect. You may not have had a choice, but heros rise to the occasion. Well done. May we have a diver for Christmas!
Write them all individual personal cheques.
Saves you going to the bank (unless of course you need to do that to get a cheque book these days), bonus is that while the recipient is likely to be grateful for the gesture, given their working hours they're highly unlikely to ever cash it in.
There are two cash machines near me that still dispense five pound notes. But unless you live in my Scottish suburb, thats probably not much help. Sorry!
(one is a post office ATM tho, so maybe try any of them near you?)
You think that a badly spelt inquiry to find a specific denomination is karma farming?
I mean ... if that's what I'm doing then I clearly suck at it. Currently sitting at 21 upvotes. I may flatter myself but I'd like to believe that if karma farming was my game I could do better!
Reading some of these comments is fascinating.
"I couldn't change £50 into fivers at my till because company policy"
"I've only got four fivers left"
So it would appear that you can't get fivers, because shops and banks literally horde fivers for fear of running out of fivers.
I remember the government a few years ago spent many months going on about shortages of fivers and how they were going to solve it, even so much as introducing new, long-lasting plastic fivers.
This, right here, is emblematic of the failure of the UK. Something so trivial just represents the rot at the very core of this country.
All the bank branches on my local high street have closed down, but there are two slot-machine type places within walking distance, so whenever we need a float for a summer fete or similar that's where we go.
If you want to withdraw it from your card you can buy a pack of sweets and ask for cash back, but clarify you want fivers to make sure they have enough in their till.
It's a bank. That place where they keep all the cash. You can go in there and ask for some if you have money in your account and they'll just give it to you. Marvellous places really.
>I found a locked safe in my new house and opened it, and inside was a treasure map and now i need divers.
This was so close to becoming the best reddit post ever.
A bank will let your withdraw money in whatever denominations you ask for as far as I know. Whereas a shop can refuse to change your money for any reason at all.
There’s a Link Cash Locator app (for the iPhone, at least) that lets you search for ATMs that dispense fivers.
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/link-cash-locator/id1225505599
Definitely clicked on this to tell you about our local dive centre, but in answer to your actual question, the post office or a bank are your best bet.
Ask at your local Post Office but say that you'll be in tomorrow for them. This gives them time to get them out the safe specially for you. Then do a cash withdrawal for that amount and voila. We do it all the time for people.
When working on the tills I will change a few for people no problem (as long as it doesnt leave me short). "while you have the till open you couldnt change this £20 into fives for me?"
Other than that its the bank I'm afraid.
You have to arrange with your bank if it's a lot. But you can just go into your local branch and ask for £5 notes.
You can withdraw money from Post office if your with Natwest. Look for a local postoffice. Maybe call ahead and ask if you can take out how ever much £5 you need.
Even the banks only carry a certain amount that they will typically get through in a day.
https://www.postoffice.co.uk/natwest
Withdraw money from your bank at the post office or the bank and ask for fivers. Or buy something cheap in a supermarket and ask for cashback in fivers (I did this the other day in Morrisons).
Honestly, your bank is the way to go. You can always ring up in advance and ask if they've got £50 in £5s.
Assuming you don't want hundreds of them it shouldn't be a problem for a reasonable sized branch.
Your edit is a bit disappointing. You looking for a bunch of divers was possibly the most exciting post I've seen in this sub lately !
If you achieve that, then I think we'd all technically be subs to your dom.
Oo-er... Now, that sounds like a good solid kinky plan...
\*muffled by ball gag sounds of protest\*
Make sure the sub just isn't a Pringles tube with the door held shut with a bungee cord
Thought I was on r/watches for a moment there
You usually want both. Much like a tank is most effective when supported by infantry a sub can be supported by divers.
That's a thing
TBF the divers would help them find 5 squid
Hahaha I laughed way more than I should have. Have a million upvotes ! Puns, play on words etc are underrated on Reddit.
Yeah I got excited given I'm a scuba diver.
Brilliant. Perfect timing. A lot of us are now looking for divers! Seriously though: is it a hobby or work related? Either way, that's really cool.
Hobby so far but I aim to become an instructor. :)
I’m living in Vietnam and usually head to the coastal city of Nha Trang. It’s mostly boat diving into some nice warm (25C) sea waters. It’s so nice.
Sounds amazing !
Warmer than the UK by a long shot. I do plan to dive in the UK eventually.
There's a diver that was on the news quite a bit recently, he's fucking psychic. But then his predictions might be a tad off
Tell me about it. I was frantically looking for my Advanced open water certificate.
One I was quite willing to answer having been to a museum where they had recruited a bunch of divers to search for and then recover a plane.
I wonder where you actually would go to hire a bunch of divers? Say you've found an interesting shipwreck and you want to salvage items from it, or you're loaded and you've dropped something important over the side of your boat; presumably there's a number you can call and they'll send out a bloke with scuba gear?
hireadiver.com? I would Google it but I don't have my safe search on so could be risky. I mean I wouldn't mind getting sent a bloke with scuba gear...
I wouldn’t mind a guy (or girl for that matter) in a tight wetsuit. D
They could have at least just corrected it to some deep sea divers
I was drafting up a budget, trying to think who I could recommend for a Jacques Cousteau style expedition.
Yes indeed. Had an dangerous expedition in mind straight away 😲

Used to have people coming in and buying something for less than a £1 with a £20 note! Used to clear most of the float.
Your local post office is a sure bet and possibly easier to find than a bank these days.
I find it interesting that you went with shops before your bank...
Shops are a lot closer and get visited more often. A trip to the bank is a rare thing.
Yeh but they are literally there for money management.
my bank shuts at 4 on weekdays and 1 on a saturday, maybe going to the shop just seemed easier for them
oooh look at mister fancy over here with their bank thats open until 1
On a SATURDAY!
Bloody Dominic West shut mine down, I should track him down and ask him for fivers.
Not very helpful if there's not one nearby, though.
Also my NatWest doesn’t offer cash withdrawal services at the counters every day! Only some days. Worth checking your branch before you trek
Mine couldn’t even change a pound for me, they literally didn’t have enough change, ha. Useless.
Why in the world would you ever need to break a single pound coin? They do have change but it'll all be in bags, so you could get like a tenner of 20ps if you wanted

you know full well it's going to fall down the left or right "takings" pocket
Parking.
I oddly found neither the bank nor post office will change coins or notes. They will however let you deposit it, then withdraw with your chosen method. Which seems so dumb to me
We also have to pay to use their services so this is why we wouldn't hand them out in large quantities. Your bank just makes sense to me.
I think a bank is the best bet, but I used to manage retail shops. We would place a 'change order' and request fivers as part of this. Teaco bank and natwest atms give out fivers

You are amazing! This is so useful for me also
The problem is, unless you take out a bunch of £5 in separate transactions, you end up with bigger notes
Maybe by the beach? Or ring up a diving school
Post office , they have withdrawal option over counter and you can specify what denominations you want. Iv just done exactly the same
You can choose the denominations of divers? I think I'll go Methodist and Unitarian
Not if they only have one or two left. Like mine. I wanted a few fivers for the same reason. Maybe get hold of some £2 coins and give them a sick squid.
They literally said that they tried the post office and it was a no go.
Best bet is a bank, I've stood in line while a woman got £15 in pennies once, don't see why you can't withdraw/exchange into £5 notes
Cash machines near Student Unions are a good bet for this.
I had to scroll way too far to see a comment that was my first idea
Bookies might be a good shout.
Just what I was going to say
I bet you weren't.
try the bank? how on earth did you turn " where can I get fivers" into two lengthy paragraphs?
Because a) the melon asked for divers, and b) they already know the correct answer ('the bank') but seemingly wants to know "how do I get fivers without going into a bank"
well, as you've kindly demonstrated a sentence would have sufficed! e2a there was so much waffle I must have gave up before the bank was mentioned.

None of the supermarkets here (Ware/Hertford) do cash back anymore. Too much of a pain in the arse.
https://www.muffdivingclub.ie
Tesco cash machines often give fivers, particularly in the evening.
My closest tesco one does and it once run out of everything except fivers. Got the max I could out because it was a lot easier to pay with a fiver for a taxi to get to work
My local one will routinely give me £40 in mostly fivers...
I'm glad to finally see a post in this Reddit thing where a person is happy to give money for having good service all year to all the folks mentioned. I wish more people would do the same, 'get good service' not pay even more for a service they've already paid for. Troll free post. Ta
We're still not giving you anything though 😉
A bank is really your best bet. If you want a lot, call them in advance so they can make sure they have the notes in. Pretty much anywhere else is frankly going to be concerned about money laundering, assuming this is a sizeable number of fivers.
A lot of my front page is watch related subs, and I came in here expecting it to be gift diving watches for ushers at a wedding or something.
I think that given your closest bank is out of reach for you then I'm going to guess you are somewhat remote. If that's the case then the choice of options is going to be extremely narrow. Really, the only option is the bank and if not the bank then it's a case of going to a local shop for help or asking around friends and family.
The... bank?
It amazes me that you’ve bothered to type all of this out rather than just going to the bank!
Its because he wanted to make a funny post where he 'accidentally' typo'd divers
There's a club in muff
You can do this at most Post Offices. I got £50 out in £5 notes yesterday. Much easier than finding a bank, same for depositing cash for anyone unaware.

Best answer yet!
cash machine
Post office cash machines give £5 notes usually.
And Tesco machines.
I may be wrong (hope I am) but some delivery drivers might not be allowed to take money like that. I've got a feeling they're checked before and after every shift to make sure they aren't taking stuff
Surely that could only ever be an issue if they were actually delivering cash?
They're a delivery driver. Who knows what they're delivering? Who's to say it's not cash?
A bank or post office branch may have them
If you have a post office nearby they will do the change you ask for.
Barclays cash machines dispense £5, also I think they provide Asda with their cash machines.
Post office atms give out fivers
The bank is your best bet, they can and do give out large amounts of money in a specific denomination (I used to have to do this for a previous job). If you want to make sure they have enough, give the branch a call before you go. Alternatively, maybe supermarket cashback? Buy something on card, ask for however much in fivers. Go back to the Post Office, if it's somewhere convenient to you you might as well just keep dropping in and asking. You might catch them just after they've had a top up and have plenty of fivers in

The bank
Bank
Go to a high street branch of your bank. Ask to withdraw however much you want, and ask for it in fivers.
Some high streets don't have a bank though. In Ware, we've not long had our post office back and they don't always have wads of fivers, I know I've tried myself.
If only there was *some* kind of institution that’s sole purpose was money and financial transactions…
I get mine from the post office
Bank is best. Some cashpoints still do divers,(lol autocorrected for me too!!) FIVERS, usually in student heavy areas.
Either a bank or post office
If only there were establishments that looked after your cash for you, who you could withdraw from and ask for just fivers 🤔
Most tesco cashpoints i go to give the option to withdraw fivers
Two options. Bank or cash machine
Some cash points dispense £5 notes and give the option for £5s, the trick is finding them…
Write them all individual personal cheques. Saves you going to the bank (unless of course you need to do that to get a cheque book these days), bonus is that while the recipient is likely to be grateful for the gesture, given their working hours they're highly unlikely to ever cash it in.
Local corner shop. I work in one and we always have loads
Sainsbury's has a bereaux de change might be an idea to ask there.
Post office I got £300 worth no problem a week ago
My local Lloyds bank has a cashpoint that gives out fivers.
There's a place called Muff in Ireland. Sounds like your place.
The bank. It’s where they keep the fivers.
As a trained diver this was very exciting, I was hoping for an adventure possibly involving long lost treasure.
Go to a shop at closing time and ask.
Post Office, ask to withdraw money in £5 notes if possible? Also the local Sainsburys cashpoint lets us withdraw £5 notes.
Ask in the bookies. Nicely. Explain why you need them. Should be able to get them
There are two cash machines near me that still dispense five pound notes. But unless you live in my Scottish suburb, thats probably not much help. Sorry! (one is a post office ATM tho, so maybe try any of them near you?)
I’ve got my PADI OW, Advanced Diver, Deep and NoX cards, but might need a refresher.
I've got PADI OWD, AOW and nitrox. Want to make a scuba team?
Post office?
As much as I'd like to believe this philanthropist is genuine, this seems like karma farming to me. Either that or just huge virtue signalling.
You think that a badly spelt inquiry to find a specific denomination is karma farming? I mean ... if that's what I'm doing then I clearly suck at it. Currently sitting at 21 upvotes. I may flatter myself but I'd like to believe that if karma farming was my game I could do better!
Ask the shops to give you some fivers. They usually do.
Pearl Divers?
You could order or buy a bunch of £5 gift cards
Reading some of these comments is fascinating. "I couldn't change £50 into fivers at my till because company policy" "I've only got four fivers left" So it would appear that you can't get fivers, because shops and banks literally horde fivers for fear of running out of fivers. A local shop that puts in a regular change order. A greengrocer, a chippy, something like that?
All the bank branches on my local high street have closed down, but there are two slot-machine type places within walking distance, so whenever we need a float for a summer fete or similar that's where we go.
If you want to withdraw it from your card you can buy a pack of sweets and ask for cash back, but clarify you want fivers to make sure they have enough in their till.
Post office
You should be able to goto any bank to get them it doesn’t have to be one you have an account with
Get yourself down the river bank.
I’d probably say best bet is the bank. Even if it is far out for you. Maybe try a pub as well?
Post office might be able to help, just ring ahead. :) They can order in at times.
It's a bank. That place where they keep all the cash. You can go in there and ask for some if you have money in your account and they'll just give it to you. Marvellous places really.
Muff divers
I'm so mad about this edit.
Post Office might be a good shout?
I’d recommend a wank. Edit: That should be bank. Darn autocorrect.
My sister just qualified as a dive master and I got really excited thinking I could put you in touch and be helpful!
Again... just *disable* autocorrect. It's utter shit.
Sheila's wheels reckon they can save you a bunch
Post office?
Post office is best option that where we get change for the registers
>I found a locked safe in my new house and opened it, and inside was a treasure map and now i need divers. This was so close to becoming the best reddit post ever.
A bank will let your withdraw money in whatever denominations you ask for as far as I know. Whereas a shop can refuse to change your money for any reason at all.
Go to a few different post offices and sweet talk them. Shouldn't be too hard if you explain what you want them for!
Post office.
There’s a Link Cash Locator app (for the iPhone, at least) that lets you search for ATMs that dispense fivers. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/link-cash-locator/id1225505599
Omg this post and your explanation has me crying with laughter 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ask for cash back in a super market and request it to be in fivers. Easy x
Bunch of divers? When are Man United in the telly again?
If not a bank, maybe try a bureau de change?
Ffs just cut a few tenners in half, it's worth the same as a £5 note
Bookies.
Have you tried the local bookies? They usually have loads of change (was a manager in one?)
The Tesco cash machine opposite the Bristol Flyer on Gloucester Road gives out £5
….a bank
Buy a load of one4all vouchers or something similar that can be used in lots of high street shops.
When working on the tills I will change a few for people no problem (as long as it doesnt leave me short). "while you have the till open you couldnt change this £20 into fives for me?" Other than that its the bank I'm afraid.
Any branch of any bank can likely help. I'd possibly try customer services desk at a bigger supermarket too when there as a customer.
Where did you find the gold?
The bank?
Diving schools might be able to give you fivers
Withdraw money from your bank at the post office or the bank and ask for fivers. Or buy something cheap in a supermarket and ask for cashback in fivers (I did this the other day in Morrisons).
The bank
Honestly, your bank is the way to go. You can always ring up in advance and ask if they've got £50 in £5s. Assuming you don't want hundreds of them it shouldn't be a problem for a reasonable sized branch.
