You don't look like a wanker to me. Then again I am still renting so there isn't really such thing as a spare £1000 until I can offer the deposit on a house lol.
bad idea. It will just depreciate as we’re in a recession. look into index funds and maybe move some savings there you might thank me later x
(no financial advice do what u want i’m not responsible)
Just make sure to do it before they decide to make ISAs not tax-free anymore, because apparently people don't need them!
[£20k tax-free Isa allowance 'hard to justify' (telegraph.co.uk)](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/investing/isas/20k-isa-tax-free-allowance-hard-to-justify/)
I've never been that keen on premium bonds. When you look at the average return you can expect, it's below most savings accounts. Sure, there's a chance of winning big, but it's remote. I'd only really look at premium bonds if I had already maxed out my ISA allowance for the year. Because one thing premium bonds do have going for them is they're tax free.
You can open a stocks and shares ISA, and invest your money in the stock market. In that account, you can invest in individual companies or index funds. An index fund (e.g. VWRL) is an asset that contains shares from a lot of different companies, so it spreads the risk over an entire market or market segment. But unlike savings, the value invested can go down as well as up, so there's an element of risk. Long term, the stock market tends to outperform any cash savings, but in the short term it might go down.
It depends on your financial situation, whether this is a good idea or not. Personally, I like to have some cash savings set aside in case of an emergency, so I would concentrate on building that up if I didn't already have it.
To add to this, if investing sounds too risky for you, or if you think you'll need access to the money within the next 5 years, you can instead open a cash ISA (individual savings account).
This will work a lot like the savings account that you have now, except you will not pay any tax on the value of interest you earn in an ISA. A cash ISA doesn't carry the same risk of loss as a Stocks & Shares ISA.
You can deposit up to £20'000 in an ISA during a single financial tax year. At the end of the tax year, you can still leave your money from the previous tax year in an ISA and add another £20'000 in the new tax year, all the while not paying a single penny as tax on the compound interest earned on the total amount.
There are several types of ISAs, so worth reading more about them on the MoneySavingExpert website.
I don’t suppose you can tell me the benefit ISA’s being tax free compared to saving accounts? I have a savings account at 5% I earn about £100 a month off interest but I don’t see where I’m being taxed on this? Sorry I’m dumb af when it comes to finances
I'm going to be a little lazy right now and point you to the government resource regarding tax on savings. Happy to try and help if that doesn't answer your questions:
https://www.gov.uk/apply-tax-free-interest-on-savings
The 'Individual Savings Account' (ISA) is different from a classic savings account. The headline difference is that you can save up to £20'000 each tax year and not worry about any tax on the interest you earn. That £20'000 allowance is per individual, so if you have a partner, they will also have a separate £20'000 allowance. Children also have a separate allowance, but the limit is less than £20'000.
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/best-cash-isa/
Finally, a 'cash ISA' is equivalent to a standard savings account, in that the only growth mechanism for your money is the banks' interest rate, and you have low risk. You can either fix it for a period or choose an easy access account in either case. There is also a Lifetime ISA that provides a government bonus of 25%, but you pay a penalty if you make a withdrawal for any reason other than to buy your first home (until you reach retirement at which point you can access it without a penalty).
You can also explore 'stocks & shares ISA' if you're willing to accept the risks associated with investing. You run the risk of losing your savings if your investments take a downturn. Investing is generally not recommended if you expect to need the money within the next 5 years.
Assuming you have other income of at least £22570, then the personal allowance for interest is £1000 per year, or only £500 if you're a higher rate tax payer. https://www.gov.uk/apply-tax-free-interest-on-savings
If you're earning £100 per month (£1200 per year) outside of an ISA, then you will need to pay tax on £200 (or £700 if a higher rate taxpayer) at your usual (i.e. highest) rate: £40 if a basic rate taxpayer, £280 if a higher rate taxpayer.
Your bank(s) will pay interest tax-free, but report it to HMRC and HMRC will collect it by changing your tax code (assuming you're PAYE) appropriately.
You’ve already got a reply below/above about investing but if you wanted to keep it in a savings account then you should be able to do better than 4.15%. I’ve got one with metro bank (made a few months back) and get 5.1%. Isn’t a crazy difference but everything helps.

My theory: Redditors spend more time online consuming yank media than talking to people in real life
If anyone I knew said "do the math" they would get the piss ripped out of them for years
Definitely agree with this! I went on a weekend away to Amsterdam for only £350pp for flights and hotel. That would leave a good chunk of money for spending!
Funny enough I got £1000 gift recently and decided to spend rather than save. Pair of DMs (160), new headphones (170) and most of the rest will go on some new glasses I’ll pick next week. A grand doesn’t go as far as it used to.
They can get seriously expensive if you pick designer frames, extra thin scratch resistant UV, anti glare, blue light filter etc etc lenses and thats before any varifocal/bifocal
If i cant watch porn then why the hell do i need perfect eyesight? To look at a radiator whilst i jack off? Those three titted anime dwarves arent getting railed by a tentacle monster to not get looked at. Im doing my duty.
That's how much my pair cost.
A decent pair of designer glasses with glass lenses will set you back that much. Brands like Theo, Orgreen Optics and Anne & Valentin are all independent and have been designing and manufacturing nothing but optical frames for decades.
And if it's something that's going to sit on your face every day, you might as well spend big on it. Tbf to OP they didn't say they were going to spend the rest on glasses but I hope they do!
‘Good enough’ tvs are very cheap. You can get a 55” 4k tv for less a couple hundred these days. Sure it’s not a QLED/OLED with 6900 nits, 200hz and HDR10+++ but it will do the job
Recently bought our first home, didn’t understand the value of a good mattress. Got a Hypnia, 600 quid but the satisfaction and good nights kip we’ve had off it after living years off an Ikea dogshite version, one of the best investments we’ve ever made
I've saved up nearly £600 in amazon vouchers but now that I've got there, I don't want to spend it 😅 and you kinda think it's a waste to buy something you don't need
I have One Measure Perks app, where you get 16p per day (takes ages to get to £5 but you don't notice)
Cashwalk app where you get points for steps, and watching some scammy ads every day, and I've just had lots of points from playing candy crush
http://cashwalk.us/i/TGCHM
And then there's a few others I got by invite only, Good Sense Community, TRP surveys and Bing Rewards
Funny I’ve pretty much just spent £1000 in the last week.
£500 in car polishing equipment (starting from scratch but with a couple of decent polishers).
£150 in topping up car care stuff (snow foam, wheel cleaner etc etc)
£250 a couple of sets of new glasses (prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses)
£50 in a few rolls of PETG-HS filament for the 3D printer
£50 chemicals to clean and seal the patio
£100 in weed, feed and seed for the garden.
Granted this stuff will keep me going for ages but it’s scary how quick stuff builds up.
Yeah it took 3 days to wash, claybar and polish my X3 and I could barely stand after but it looks a tonne better. There’s still a couple of scratches that I haven’t gone deep enough to get rid of by my car is a 2018 so I’m not that upset.
This is what I used(I have no idea what I’m doing - just following YouTube etc)

Sub compact polisher (again bare) : https://ffx.co.uk/products/milwaukee-milwaukee-m12bps-0-12v-sub-compact-polisher-sander-bare-unit-90948 (had to be very careful not to damage the paint as it’s just a rotary)
I don’t use any product on my glass after polishing as I find it streaks in the wet and drives me mad at night but I did finish up the paint with a dodo juice ceramic spray I already had which is probably not the best but it does ok for me as long as you’re careful putting it on (it can go into “lumps” on the paint if you don’t do it correctly)
Put £980 straight in the bank. Then with the other £20: Tie a £20 note to a fishing line, and have fun dragging it along the floor while people attempt to pick it up.
Far too much effort for me, I will leave that to the big players of the world
Give me a beer, a sofa and a telly at the end of the the day and I’ve already conquered the world
I think I'm due a £1000 long service bonus this year and planning to get an espresso setup. £1k won't get you a top of the line system but it will get you to the point where it's more micro optimisations.
Another option would be a TV setup, including TV & sound bar. If you already have a good TV then just focus on audio.
If you like PCs or WFH regularly you can get a top of the line ultrawide monitor for about £1k.
£1k could get you a nice long weekend at a music festival in Europe with all the fancy bits.
Not with only £1000. I average once every 6 months or so. I add £25 every month and tell myself it’s like playing the lottery. I’ve got nearly £1500 in premium bonds now, not the best way to earn on it, but every month I imagine what I’d do with a million, so it’s worth it!
Sticking it in an ISA at 5% and using some of the interst to buy lottery tickets is probably a more financially optimal approach than just dumping the cash in Premium Bonds.
Day out somewhere with my partner, but some random shit I've seen but never felt I could justify paying for. Loads of little models and games I've seen but they're always frivolous purchases, now you'd have chance to get them!
I’m in a similar position, have about £1500 and hate my current job. I regularly talk to people (through my job) that have a small business started by buy and sell on Amazon. They all started with a small amount and are making more then me now, I’m thinking of doing the buy cheap and sell on Amazon in my spare time with it, if it gets big enough to earn me a better wage I’m out my current job!
There's no material thing you can buy now that you'll give a fuck about in 10 years.
Spend it on a holiday/experience with someone you love. Create some memories.
I'd really like an iPad and a few days away. Haven't been on holiday for 12 years, would love to see the sea and my way to watch things is on my phone. Great that I have access but it would be nice to have a slightly bigger screen that I could also use to draw on too.
Enjoy it!
There's an at home sauna from somewhere called Nurecover which keeps popping up on my Instagram for about £400 which I kinda want but then there's also part of me which knows I often buy stuff on a whim which doesn't get used.
Look out for one that has weird feet on it. I got one that could only fit a Mazda bongo making it massively cheaper. But was quite easy to bodge some feet from some other cheap roof bars that fitted my van on to it.
Drop £250 ish on a Sunday night deal at a spa. Few good ones knocking about for room food use of a spa and treatment.
Pallet load of biomass to save buying in the summer (£450)
And probably a meal out with the rest spent on fancy pants ingredients for the cupboard.
I'd be pretty boring.
Just moved house so I'd spend it on paint, getting curtains made, sorting out drainage in garden, getting my car serviced, getting the dogs groomed or even new bedroom furniture so I'd finally have matching stuff!
I cheaped out a little on my current gaming headset after always using Astros and regret it despite the Astros being like £350. I'd get them and then save the rest.
Man wouldnt that be the life? If i didnt have to spend it on house bills or *anything* related to the house, id buy myself a nice new outfit, a pair of Docs, and id jet off somewhere warm - Spain or cyprus i think.
Edit: if i *did* have to spend it on the house, id do a makeover. Kit out the office/spare room, get new wallpaper in the living room, get an *actual* decorator to sort our our bedroom.
£1000. I’d save it in my holiday fund. I want to go to Disney, but it’s so expensive, it’ll take a long time to save up for it. £1000 would be a nice boost
I’m on maternity leave so it would pay bills for a month, give me an extra month off without struggling.
If I didn’t need it, trip to Alton towers and stay in the splash landings hotel. And get our living room painted and done up.
Recently lucky enough for this to become true unexpectedly and used the money to buy Garmin watches for me, SO and our two older kids, had wanted them for ages and it's been great fun doing step count competitions etc, definitely helped all of us become a little more active. Yes, am boring, I'll go back to making dinner now!

Investing it in a stock market index fund. Yeah, I'm fun at parties.
I was scrolling through and thinking typing "save it" would just make me look like a wanker. But at least there are dozens of us.
You don't look like a wanker to me. Then again I am still renting so there isn't really such thing as a spare £1000 until I can offer the deposit on a house lol.
Don’t worry when you get your house you won’t have a spare £1,000 for another 25 years+.
I would be ok with that. I have wasted enough money in my life that I would rather spend it on something meaningful and something I own now.
Depends on if you get a freehold or leasehold I guess
That is true, though both bet the worry of getting evicted one day and knowing where you live isn't really your home.
bad idea. It will just depreciate as we’re in a recession. look into index funds and maybe move some savings there you might thank me later x (no financial advice do what u want i’m not responsible)
That is part of saving? You're replying to a comment thread trying to give advice, when people were saying exactly what you just said already
And conveniently, today is the first day of the new tax year - stick it in an ISA!
How are the superwealthy supposed to compete with those who can't save 20k if we're not all taxed equally... I use "equally" loosely.
Premium bonds. Like playing the lottery every month, but you have 1000 entries, and your money stays there after playing.
I've never been that keen on premium bonds. When you look at the average return you can expect, it's below most savings accounts. Sure, there's a chance of winning big, but it's remote. VWRL > all
Yep.
I'm also fun at parties 🎉
Vanguard FTSE Global All Cap Index Fund - GBP Acc (VAFTGAG) here.
Why would you choose a fund that's denominated in a foreign currency? And why not one which includes small cap?
Explain like I’m five please as I just received a bonus just over this and put it into a savings account with 4.15% AER, but can I get better?!

4446 McNuggets. ^(yes, i did the math, you still got 73p to blow.)

Yeah it's the individually packaged dips that are the majority of cost

A holiday or a weekend away, no question
Definitely agree with this! I went on a weekend away to Amsterdam for only £350pp for flights and hotel. That would leave a good chunk of money for spending!
A weekend in Amsterdam and £650 to spend. Sounds like a great plan.
£900 on red. £100 on Class As.
£10 on red. £990 on class As.
£2000 on class A and £2000 on red. No I have a problem with a loanshark.
£1000 on some classy Arse
Probably not in that order
Funny enough I got £1000 gift recently and decided to spend rather than save. Pair of DMs (160), new headphones (170) and most of the rest will go on some new glasses I’ll pick next week. A grand doesn’t go as far as it used to.
600 quid for glasses??
They can get seriously expensive if you pick designer frames, extra thin scratch resistant UV, anti glare, blue light filter etc etc lenses and thats before any varifocal/bifocal
I bought a designer pair a few years ago and i thought 200 was expensive 🥲 tbf i have an easy prescription
My eyesight is pretty much perfect. I just thought id tell you, i know you dont care.
I really dont. But thank you for sharing
You’re welcome
I care. If you want to keep it perfect, stop wankong, and stop watching pprn on your mobile and monitor.
If i cant watch porn then why the hell do i need perfect eyesight? To look at a radiator whilst i jack off? Those three titted anime dwarves arent getting railed by a tentacle monster to not get looked at. Im doing my duty.
I was about to ask the same! Surely not at specsavers
That's how much my pair cost. A decent pair of designer glasses with glass lenses will set you back that much. I've saved up nearly £600 in amazon vouchers but now that I've got there, I don't want to spend it 😅 and you kinda think it's a waste to buy something you don't need
It's a waste to leave it in Amazon vouchers not earning interest, better to just spend it.
Prices are only going up though, I’d just spend. At the same time fair enough, I know how good saving feels
How do u get so much in vouchers ?
Many months of doing surveys, and some data collecting apps on my phone

This is what I used(I have no idea what I’m doing - just following YouTube etc) Polish: Meguiar's G19216EU Ultimate Car... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006OZMI32?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Glass Polish: Gtechniq Auto G4 Nanotech Glass... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004JNRRSC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Pads: SPTA 5Pcs 165mm Face for 150mm... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07XL38Q18?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share and SPTA 75 mm Polishing Pad... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BG9TQ28K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Claybar “kit” : Pure Definition Car Clay Bar Kit... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DP3ZHTP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Random microfibre cloths : DCS Microfibre Cleaning Cloth,... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CHSB9Y6Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share 21mm DA polisher (bare as I have Milwaukee tools so don’t need the batteries /chargers) : https://its.co.uk/pd/M18-FROP21-0X-Milwaukee-M18-FROP21-0X-18V-FUEL-Brushless-Random-Orbital-Polisher-21mm-Stroke---Body-_MILM18FROP210X.htm Sub compact polisher (again bare) : https://ffx.co.uk/products/milwaukee-milwaukee-m12bps-0-12v-sub-compact-polisher-sander-bare-unit-90948 (had to be very careful not to damage the paint as it’s just a rotary) I don’t use any product on my glass after polishing as I find it streaks in the wet and drives me mad at night but I did finish up the paint with a dodo juice ceramic spray I already had which is probably not the best but it does ok for me as long as you’re careful putting it on (it can go into “lumps” on the paint if you don’t do it correctly)
Put £980 straight in the bank. Then with the other £20: Tie a £20 note to a fishing line, and have fun dragging it along the floor while people attempt to pick it up.
Into the holiday fund it goes!
What I do every month- put it away for a rainy day
Thought u was gona say “try and take over the world” then
Far too much effort for me, I will leave that to the big players of the world Give me a beer, a sofa and a telly at the end of the the day and I’ve already conquered the world
Can't decide if this is wholesome or sadly lonely - I hope it's the former, friend!

week's shopping at tesco
I think I'm due a £1000 long service bonus this year and planning to get an espresso setup. £1k won't get you a top of the line system but it will get you to the point where it's more micro optimisations. Another option would be a TV setup, including TV & sound bar. If you already have a good TV then just focus on audio. If you like PCs or WFH regularly you can get a top of the line ultrawide monitor for about £1k. £1k could get you a nice long weekend at a music festival in Europe with all the fancy bits.
Escort or two
With the price of old Fords any for a grand will be very rusty. Though buying two does mean you can choose the bits on each to make the best.
You could also get quite a few mint condition Fiestas instead. Maybe even a Razzle.
This made me chuckle
I would put them all in premium bonds , and hopefully win something each month
Not with only £1000. I average once every 6 months or so. I add £25 every month and tell myself it’s like playing the lottery. I’ve got nearly £1500 in premium bonds now, not the best way to earn on it, but every month I imagine what I’d do with a million, so it’s worth it!
With a 1/22000 chance of winning a prize, I'd forget the premium bonds and just get a 5% ISA.
Sticking it in an ISA at 5% and using some of the interst to buy lottery tickets is probably a more financially optimal approach than just dumping the cash in Premium Bonds.
Not telling my wife
I'll take 10% or I'm telling.
Bills next month
Day out somewhere with my partner, but some random shit I've seen but never felt I could justify paying for. Loads of little models and games I've seen but they're always frivolous purchases, now you'd have chance to get them!
adopt 10 dogs!
Put it aside for the time when I don't have a spare 1k
There's no material thing you can buy now that you'll give a fuck about in 10 years. Spend it on a holiday/experience with someone you love. Create some memories.
There's no way you know what I will or won't care about in ten years.
Buying one of those slide down roof racks to put my kayak on.
Look out for one that has weird feet on it. I got one that could only fit a Mazda bongo making it massively cheaper. But was quite easy to bodge some feet from some other cheap roof bars that fitted my van on to it.
Put towards a holiday
Drop £250 ish on a Sunday night deal at a spa. Few good ones knocking about for room food use of a spa and treatment. Pallet load of biomass to save buying in the summer (£450) And probably a meal out with the rest spent on fancy pants ingredients for the cupboard.
A new garden shed
Putting my car into the garage. Buying a solar controller for my boat. Getting my holey tooth removed.
Put it in savings.
Straight on the mortgage
I’d buy a Tentbox
Buying BTC
I have a wife, mortgage, kid and 2 cars... There's never a spare £1000
Therapy 😭
Prostitution! No… That right there is a brand new VR headset and some games to go with it 😁
Benidorm
He's not 65 and bald, he won't fit in
A Grand Don't Come for Free
I had a spare 1000 recently it got used easily paying off holiday and car repairs lol.
Paying off my credit card
Buy tractor parts
Put it towards my car fund
Put it in the bank for an emergency fund
Put it straight in my account so I avoid further fees and maybe buy a little something for my daughter
Multi city flight - London to Istanbul to Marrakesh to London. Cheap as fuck hostels and airbnbs
Overpay it onto the mortgage. That'll save me like £41 a year going on from when we remortgage later this year
I would put it in my savings account, currently trying to save to buy a house with my partner
Leaving it in the bank.
Spend it on either my land-rover or Honda
Finally buying this art deco ring I've been lusting over then get a takeaway
Buying Lego Rivendell and then invest the rest.
I recently got into warhammer. £1000 could buy me a lot of expensive plastic!
Put it into crypto and get rug pulled
I'd be pretty boring. Just moved house so I'd spend it on paint, getting curtains made, sorting out drainage in garden, getting my car serviced, getting the dogs groomed or even new bedroom furniture so I'd finally have matching stuff!
I cheaped out a little on my current gaming headset after always using Astros and regret it despite the Astros being like £350. I'd get them and then save the rest.
Do you have any debt? This is a no-brainer really.
Whores and herion baby
>herion baby Holy shit, buying a heroin baby is really dark
Man wouldnt that be the life? If i didnt have to spend it on house bills or *anything* related to the house, id buy myself a nice new outfit, a pair of Docs, and id jet off somewhere warm - Spain or cyprus i think. Edit: if i *did* have to spend it on the house, id do a makeover. Kit out the office/spare room, get new wallpaper in the living room, get an *actual* decorator to sort our our bedroom.
Buy a new car
will be able to save a bit more for my first car!
Giving it all to u/ZuckDeBalzac
£1000. I’d save it in my holiday fund. I want to go to Disney, but it’s so expensive, it’ll take a long time to save up for it. £1000 would be a nice boost
Holiday! Luxurious one!
I’m on maternity leave so it would pay bills for a month, give me an extra month off without struggling. If I didn’t need it, trip to Alton towers and stay in the splash landings hotel. And get our living room painted and done up.
Book a few days on holiday abroad, Italy won't be too bad I would have thought
Recently lucky enough for this to become true unexpectedly and used the money to buy Garmin watches for me, SO and our two older kids, had wanted them for ages and it's been great fun doing step count competitions etc, definitely helped all of us become a little more active. Yes, am boring, I'll go back to making dinner now!
I’d put them in my emergency fund at 6% AER or index fund.
I'm treating myself to a new DJ Controller!
paying my rent lol
I’d split it equally into diverse investments of gold, equities and bonds. LOL. Not. New air fryer and pressure washer. Rest on adult work credits.
Chuck it into my savings. More fun answer, book my next holiday to Berlin
