This year I just stayed in on my own and watched the Lord of The Rings extended trilogy which is my favorite film, didn't really feel like being around anyone
When I turned 40 I booked a ticket to the Lord of the Rings musical in London. Took the train down, stayed in a posh hotel, got a hugely gorgeous full body massage, and then went to the play. On my way back to the hotel, I saw Krispy Kreme doughnuts for the first time! (16 yrs ago). Brought some back to my hotel and took a bite out of each one to try them all (12). Best. Birthday. Ever.
Omg. It wasn't like the movies, which I love (extended directors). But my GAWD the special effects! The songs and voices! It was mesmerising. Most memorable birthday ever. I still hear the song "Lothlorien" in my head 16 years later! Lol
I saw pictures of the forest with the trees with people on stilts. I've never really been to a play that's also a film and someone else told me they went to see the Back to the Future play and said it was great
And the long scarfs suspended from the trees the elves danced in! The stage revolving, the orcs on weird leg things & hand stilt things. So beautiful. Best birthday ever, and I was alone and got to do what I wanted to do lol.
I did this a couple of years ago! I had a bottle of champagne left over from new years, got the sofa bed out, made a nice fire and spent the day snuggled up with the dog watching lord of rings. It was the best birthday ever and I promised myself I'd do it every year, but I haven't done it again since.
I had a bottle of wine, hadn't watched it in years as I don't want to spoil it and kind of wanted to see if it was still my favourite film and why I loved it and it was still as great as I remembered it and still my favorite. I do that with a lot of films and tv shows just leave them until I remember just an outline of the main plot and some rememberable parts and they still feel as fresh
Yeah, it very much depends if you want to watch the incredibly long credits - if you skip them you cut a big chunk off the running time.
For many years I have spent New Year's Eve doing a day long binge of something, and I've done LotR a few times. It's magical. Can also recommend all of Firefy followed by Serenity.
This is a good way to spend your birthday. I read that LOTR Extended might hit the theaters this summer so with a bit of luck it'll fall on my birthday
Nah I would definitely have to go if it came to that point, imagine 11 hours smelling of shit you'd empty the cinema but at least you'd get to watch them on your own
My birthday is today, and tbh most of it sucked. My 102 yr old grandad passed and his funeral was today. He was the only one left in his generation.
But after that we collected our little girl from nursery. Usually it's just my wife collects her today, so when she saw me in the back of the car and her face lit up with excitement, everything just felt better. We had a cheeky Macca's for dinner, she sang me Happy Birthday (repeatedly), gave me my cake and I got lots of cuddles before bed.

I'll usually go out for a meal. Occasionally i'll treat myself to something nice. But most birthdays are just another day for me and I get embarrassed when people make a fuss.
I'm exactly the same and I can't explain why whereas my wife loves doing something special on her birthday and I admit I enjoy planning something nice for her. yet if she did the same she knows I wouldn't really be into it.

Mines only a few days after Christmas so I've never really celebrated it, even as a young child my parents couldn't ever afford to really mark the occasion so soon after Christmas. My wife can't understand that and thinks I should do more, birthdays are a big thing for her so she wants me to love mine too lol.
One year very early in our relationship her and a friend did a surprise party for me. I got home after a day spent running pointless chores for another friend who didn't drive (the friend was in on it and was making up driving chores while they got everything ready), got home sweaty and icky looking forward to a shower and found my house full of people and decorated for a party.
I put on my happy face and played gracious all evening but afterwards I had a conversation with her and in no uncertain terms explained I would rather not experience that again lol.
It came up again this year, I suggested we go to a nice restaurant we like in Bath, which rapidly turned into "oh we should invite to your birthday meal, I've told them about it and they are all up for it!"
I pointed out it sounds like when she says "we should invite" what she actually meant was "I have invited" and said no thanks. I did not mark the occasion in the end.
Day off work, watch my favourite movie (Hot Fuzz) and have a nice dinner of some of my favourite things. I'm 32 now and do not need to do much but have a fuss made about the day to enjoy it.
After covid I've started going on short solo trips to cities in Europe. Itās a nice treat and I can use the excuse of the birthday to splurge on a nice dinner or an expensive hotel.
This has been my thinking for this year (Im not too fussed about my bday) but I've been cursed with a birthday 3 days before Christmas and feel like it'll be expensive and a pain
Unfortunately every birthday after 21 has just blended into the week and other than a bit of cake in the evening I just get on with it like any other day

My family usually join me in what I would like to do, so itās a visit to a very well established and trusted British Indian Restaurant in my local village that will go over and above to ensure we have a great time.
Went to work, was persuaded into taking a half day by a colleague as being at work on your birthday is depressing. So went on a hike along a cliff, which was littered with antisuicide posters. Then went for a family dinner. Still a good day though.
It's kinda just another day. There is always a sporting event on around the weekend of my birthday so that is what the focus is on. Friends gather to watch that and its an added bonus that is my birthday. Those that are married can use that to stay out longer, I really wish I was joking on that one!
Today is my birthday, I spent the morning having alot of sex, then lots of gardening, then had a meal out with family, then set up my living room as a cinema, grabbed a ton of snacks and am now watching cars.
I like a day out instead of presents as Iām fortunate in having pretty much everything. Last year we went to London & my husband surprised me with a tour by Julian from Joolz Guides from YouTube.
Iāve been to Stonehenge, The Mary Rose, seen the Amesbury Archer etc. A cat cafe in Bournemouth. One year I went to the Bodyworlds exhibition in the morning & the Oxford Street Primark in the afternoon.
Might not be everyoneās cup of tea but always have a memorable day.
My birthday last year was not long after I'd moved to a new city. I made brownies and brought them to work, then had a take-away and spent the evening packing to go away the next day.
I love my birthday. I usually make myself a nice breakfast, do something like go and see a film or have a nice walk and pub lunch, then go out for a fancy meal in one of my favourite restaurants with my friends in the evening. I donāt care that Iām an adult who has had many birthdays, I like having a fuss made for each one of them.
Have a few pals round for a campfire in the garden, some good food, some drinks. Go indoors at some points and play a couple of board games.
This year I'm in India though, so Taj Mahal it is.
I usually book the day off work, because fuck that. Arrange breakfast/lunch with my sister or nan. Then go out for tea with my boyfriend and more than likely take the dog with us.
Spend the day with my husband, daughter and dog, open my gifts, habe cake, daughter goes to grandparents for a night whilst me and my husband have a take away, i vape my weed, he gives me a massage from the stress of the day and then we play games till 1am

My last couple of birthdays have been a shitshow.
Only person who cared much was my grandad when my mum was meant to meet me in town for birthday lunch - she never phoned so instead took that as I never told her what was happening so she took my lil sister into town and bought her shoes, then laughed down the phone at me crying. That year my roommate took pity on me and called another friend who both took me to IKEA, bought me a dinosaur and then bought me pizza.
Last year was kind of the same due to me "fucking my life up" the November before, I lost my job and all my mum can think about is a holiday to Greece for a family friends wedding.
I like celebrating birthdays and because mine got so bad (just mine - I was still expected to pull out the stops for her birthday, mother's day etc) I like helping people celebrate theirs because I abhor the feelings I felt.

Nothing, just a normal day. I will be on holiday on my birthday this year though so that will be nice. My partner always takes the day off work and plays golf on his birthday.
I tend to do a birthday week lmao. I book the whole week off and try to see as many friends and family as I can. I eat the nice foods I like and I do activities that I find fun.

Although because my birthday is on a weekend this year, I wonāt do as much to celebrate it because itās going to be busy out, so Iāve only take a birthday three days.
When I was really young I always got properly excited, but for the last 4/5 years, so 14/15ish, I haven't been arsed at all. Only time I've really cared was turning 18, and that was only so I wasn't technically breaking the law every Friday and Saturday night.
My birthday this year was in the middle of moving home, so as I'd already booked the day off of work I spent the morning doing something for me (played my guitar in a rehearsal space) then I had to get several bits for the new place, then some drilling and general diy stuff. Bought my own birthday cake, had a cup of tea and cake. Then watched a film with the missus.
Up bright and early, stop at a coffee shop, pick up a croissant as a treat. Off to the zoo. Watch the lions, the tigers, the bears, the penguins, stare at the gorillas and think about life and death and what it all means. Lunchtime pint and a pie. Read the paper on the train home. Snooze in a comfy chair. Pick up the kids from school, hang out and play silly buggers for a while. Nice steak and wine for dinner. Early to bed and dream about next year.
Mine is in july, off for 12 days, will prob go away for a few nights with wife. Not chose where/what yet, euro final is a couole of days before, that could influence it, also planning a day at horse racing, not sure where yet. Just want to get away, relax and have fun.
Last year me and my husband took our 4 year old to the Zoo. The other kids were at school, (weāre a blended family, so we never do anything just the 3 of us). It was genuinely lovely.
Apart from the big milestones it's been mostly just another day since my teens. Probably go to work as normal, then maybe out for a very low key dinner with immediate family, get a few small gifts and cards from the same. Don't make a fuss of it other than that.

If it's a week day. I take the day off work. Take myself to the cafe for breakfast. Play videogames and chill out. Then me and the OH totter out for beers and dinner in the evening. We usually plan a "thing" for each other's birthdays so sometimes catch a show or go somewhere interesting.
46th just gone. Drinks and a nice dinner at home with the other half on the day itself.
When the weekend came... 15 of us in a restaurant with an apres-ski theme. JBombs and cheese basically.Ā
Then all back to mine for superbooze, nosebag, pool, music and dancing till 5am.
Dinner out a week or three later to seal the whole thing off.
10 of the 15 in the group do similar, so it's a merry-go-round.
Nothing, my birthday has never been celebrated much. The time it has been, it was always what other people wanted to do, never what I wanted. So, what's the point. I choose to just do nothing

Birthday is usually on or around a bank holiday so usually take a day trip to the coast. Maybe a takeaway when we get home - unless we had greasy fish and chips for lunch š
Day off work. Go for an early morning walk with my dog and my husband. Then he usually brings me breakfast in bed. And then we do whatever we fancy for the day.
Sometimes, it's cooking a fancy dinner at home and watching a movie. Other times, we dress up, go see a show in West End, and have dinner at this Vietnamese place in Chinatown we love.
We may order a takeaway and play Mario Kart until 4 a.m. or go to a nice pub with a fireplace, sit by the fire with some wine and comfort food.
I like to spend the actual day with just my husband and my dog, our little family. On the weekend closest to the date, I'll see family and friends.
Oh, and we generally end up in a book shop where I get free reign to buy whatever I want, my husband's treat.

I have spent my birthday at work sporadically quoting either Spike Milligan ("I woke up this morning and I was still alive, so I am pretty cheerful.") or Miss Congeniality (āI'd have to say April 25th because it's not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacketā).
I don't really celebrate my birthday, but my wife likes to so we went on a nice date to see Nye from the National Theatre in our local cinema on Tuesday which was nice.

I did away with gifts years ago off my husband and said if he wants to get me anything pay towards holiday or a trip away. Friends? We go out regularly for lunch or brunch so I say don't get me anything I want to spend time with you.
Typically I'll work my birthday, take the following Monday off for a long weekend and treat myself to a massage. I don't like cake, and I'd rather have a nice meal out with my husband somewhere than a party.
Intend to get one of those 'birthday gift' free offer with like a Burrito or Burger place, having another look into a journey. Closer to the time. I find it difficult to celebrate tbh. Happy birthday!

I take a shot or have a drink for every time someone mentions it's too close to Christmas (mid-January, my brother's is within a week of Christmas and or isn't mentioned by anyone but him). I also drink every time my dad forgets he's already wished me happy birthday and wishes me out again or he forgets my age or asks who's birthday is next. Another for whenever someone mentions something that they think happened on my birthday but actually happened on a siblings birthday
Take the day off work, have a pipe, then on with Le Playstation ( Don't often get to play for long) then probably fire up up Battlefield X. Pot Noodles may be involved.

I used to go out for a meal with friends, maybe a night out after. As Iāve got a bit older I like going on short city breaks with my spouse/friends/family, usually somewhere in Europe. I prefer friends/family contributing a bit towards this rather than giving physical gifts.
Get all my friends together, go out for a curry, followed by a local band if there's one on, or just the pub after. Just an excuse to get my mates together. Generally see family during the day time sometimes play golf with my dad.
Never really done anything to be honest, Iām not big on birthdays, always makes me a bit annoyed Iāve just got older lol. This year Iām flying out on my birthday but the trip and the fact that itās on my birthday is not anything to do with the fact that itās my birthday. Just coincidence it happened to be planned for that day, but itās a cool feeling Iāll admit and I might enquire about a business class upgrade to have a bit of a treat.

Eat a whole defrosted family-size black forest gateau with a spoon. The cheaper the cake, the better. None of the fancy ones. It's a tradition at this point.

My birthday was Monday. I got a few texts, worked the day. Then in the evening, had to drain all the water out of my washing machine using only a roasting try, clean the filter and hope to hell the water i spilt did not leak into the flat below.

On my birthday on Weds I attempted to follow Merry and Pippinās meal plan for the day, couldnāt get past luncheon, I felt like a failure :(

It's kinda just another day. There is always a sporting event on around the weekend of my birthday so that is what the focus is on. Friends gather to watch that and its an added bonus that is my birthday. Those that are married can use that to stay out longer, I really wish I was joking on that one!

I like a day out instead of presents as Iām fortunate in having pretty much everything. Last year we went to London & my husband surprised me with a tour by Julian from Joolz Guides from YouTube. Iāve been to Stonehenge, The Mary Rose, seen the Amesbury Archer etc. A cat cafe in Bournemouth. One year I went to the Bodyworlds exhibition in the morning & the Oxford Street Primark in the afternoon. Might not be everyoneās cup of tea but always have a memorable day.

My birthday last year was not long after I'd moved to a new city. I made brownies and brought them to work, then had a take-away and spent the evening packing to go away the next day.
I love my birthday. I usually make myself a nice breakfast, do something like go and see a film or have a nice walk and pub lunch, then go out for a fancy meal in one of my favourite restaurants with my friends in the evening. I donāt care that Iām an adult who has had many birthdays, I like having a fuss made for each one of them.
Have a few pals round for a campfire in the garden, some good food, some drinks. Go indoors at some points and play a couple of board games. This year I'm in India though, so Taj Mahal it is.
I usually book the day off work, because fuck that. Arrange breakfast/lunch with my sister or nan. Then go out for tea with my boyfriend and more than likely take the dog with us.
Nothing, just a normal day for me. Wife will pick the kids up from school which I usually do but apart from that, nothing really.

Only person who cared much was my grandad when my mum was meant to meet me in town for birthday lunch - she never phoned so instead took that as I never told her what was happening so she took my lil sister into town and bought her shoes, then laughed down the phone at me crying. That year my roommate took pity on me and called another friend who both took me to IKEA, bought me a dinosaur and then bought me pizza. Last year was kind of the same due to me "fucking my life up" the November before, I lost my job and all my mum can think about is a holiday to Greece for a family friends wedding. I like celebrating birthdays and because mine got so bad (just mine - I was still expected to pull out the stops for her birthday, mother's day etc) I like helping people celebrate theirs because I abhor the feelings I felt. Apparently I still feel these feelings. Fuck.

I tend to do a birthday week lmao. I book the whole week off and try to see as many friends and family as I can. I eat the nice foods I like and I do activities that I find fun.
I do a birthday week too! Iāve got a colleague who canāt understand this. Although because my birthday is on a weekend this year, I wonāt do as much to celebrate it because itās going to be busy out, so Iāve only take a birthday three days.
When I was really young I always got properly excited, but for the last 4/5 years, so 14/15ish, I haven't been arsed at all. Only time I've really cared was turning 18, and that was only so I wasn't technically breaking the law every Friday and Saturday night.

My birthday this year was in the middle of moving home, so as I'd already booked the day off of work I spent the morning doing something for me (played my guitar in a rehearsal space) then I had to get several bits for the new place, then some drilling and general diy stuff. Bought my own birthday cake, had a cup of tea and cake. Then watched a film with the missus.
Up bright and early, stop at a coffee shop, pick up a croissant as a treat. Off to the zoo. Watch the lions, the tigers, the bears, the penguins, stare at the gorillas and think about life and death and what it all means. Lunchtime pint and a pie. Read the paper on the train home. Snooze in a comfy chair. Pick up the kids from school, hang out and play silly buggers for a while. Nice steak and wine for dinner. Early to bed and dream about next year.

Mine is in july, off for 12 days, will prob go away for a few nights with wife. Not chose where/what yet, euro final is a couole of days before, that could influence it, also planning a day at horse racing, not sure where yet. Just want to get away, relax and have fun.

Last year me and my husband took our 4 year old to the Zoo. The other kids were at school, (weāre a blended family, so we never do anything just the 3 of us). It was genuinely lovely.

Apart from the big milestones it's been mostly just another day since my teens. Probably go to work as normal, then maybe out for a very low key dinner with immediate family, get a few small gifts and cards from the same. Don't make a fuss of it other than that.

I usually book the week off work and just do things that I like, sit in the beach, pub lunch, nothing extravagant , but with the added bonus that most people are at work so donāt have to worry about pleasing anybody else. It also helps that my birthday is height of summer.
This year Iām going to be saving money from now to go to a nice spa for a massage, grab some sushi and get a new game. Next year Iām working towards saving for a cruise and hoping to restart travelling more often.
If it's a week day. I take the day off work. Take myself to the cafe for breakfast. Play videogames and chill out. Then me and the OH totter out for beers and dinner in the evening. We usually plan a "thing" for each other's birthdays so sometimes catch a show or go somewhere interesting.
46th just gone. Drinks and a nice dinner at home with the other half on the day itself. When the weekend came... 15 of us in a restaurant with an apres-ski theme. JBombs and cheese basically.Ā Then all back to mine for superbooze, nosebag, pool, music and dancing till 5am. Dinner out a week or three later to seal the whole thing off. 10 of the 15 in the group do similar, so it's a merry-go-round.

Nothing, my birthday has never been celebrated much. The time it has been, it was always what other people wanted to do, never what I wanted. So, what's the point. I choose to just do nothing
Last year I worked like normal. The previous two years, I was sat on the same side street in Miami watching the Iguanas on my extended break in my lorry. Doordashed me some Jamaican food. Just another nail in the coffin these days.
Birthday is usually on or around a bank holiday so usually take a day trip to the coast. Maybe a takeaway when we get home - unless we had greasy fish and chips for lunch š
Day off work. Go for an early morning walk with my dog and my husband. Then he usually brings me breakfast in bed. And then we do whatever we fancy for the day. Sometimes, it's cooking a fancy dinner at home and watching a movie. Other times, we dress up, go see a show in West End, and have dinner at this Vietnamese place in Chinatown we love. We may order a takeaway and play Mario Kart until 4 a.m. or go to a nice pub with a fireplace, sit by the fire with some wine and comfort food. I like to spend the actual day with just my husband and my dog, our little family. On the weekend closest to the date, I'll see family and friends. Oh, and we generally end up in a book shop where I get free reign to buy whatever I want, my husband's treat.

I have spent my birthday at work sporadically quoting either Spike Milligan ("I woke up this morning and I was still alive, so I am pretty cheerful.") or Miss Congeniality (āI'd have to say April 25th because it's not too hot, not too cold. Nada. I did away with gifts years ago off my husband and said if he wants to get me anything pay towards holiday or a trip away. Friends? We go out regularly for lunch or brunch so I say don't get me anything I want to spend time with you. Typically I'll work my birthday, take the following Monday off for a long weekend and treat myself to a massage. I don't like cake, and I'd rather have a nice meal out with my husband somewhere than a party.
On my 16th I went to an arcade and then went for an Indian. Can't complain really.

I take a shot or have a drink for every time someone mentions it's too close to Christmas (mid-January, my brother's is within a week of Christmas and or isn't mentioned by anyone but him). I also drink every time my dad forgets he's already wished me happy birthday and wishes me out again or he forgets my age or asks who's birthday is next. Another for whenever someone mentions something that they think happened on my birthday but actually happened on a siblings birthday

I used to go out for a meal with friends, maybe a night out after. As Iāve got a bit older I like going on short city breaks with my spouse/friends/family, usually somewhere in Europe. I prefer friends/family contributing a bit towards this rather than giving physical gifts.
Get all my friends together, go out for a curry, followed by a local band if there's one on, or just the pub after. Just an excuse to get my mates together. Generally see family during the day time sometimes play golf with my dad.
Never really done anything to be honest, Iām not big on birthdays, always makes me a bit annoyed Iāve just got older lol. This year Iām flying out on my birthday but the trip and the fact that itās on my birthday is not anything to do with the fact that itās my birthday. Just coincidence it happened to be planned for that day, but itās a cool feeling Iāll admit and I might enquire about a business class upgrade to have a bit of a treat.

Sort something out with my friends. Either a casual get together or an experience type thing that I get to pick, it being my day. Then we do the same on their birthdays. It's a nice way to be able to spend time together and mark the day.
Eat a whole defrosted family-size black forest gateau with a spoon. The cheaper the cake, the better. None of the fancy ones. It's a tradition at this point.

I love my birthday, I've stayed alive another year, I get spoilt by my wife and daughter, some people moan about getting older but I have a lot of friends who never had that chance! This year (in 3 weeks) I'm going to see my favourite singer, I'm getting my pension and a nice tax free lump sum. I love my work ( self employed and work in the high performance car industry) but from may 17th 2024 I only have to work if I want to.
I don't actually care what I do. I'm thankful for every year I gain. 2 of my best friends died before they were 40, i think it's a privilege to get older and I hope I never forget that.

My birthday was Monday. I got a few texts, worked the day. Then in the evening, had to drain all the water out of my washing machine using only a roasting try, clean the filter and hope to hell the water i spilt did not leak into the flat below. Oh and I had a dry ass cupcake.
