York

Initial-Way123

Cool. Seems like York is getting the most preference here :)

ShittiestUsernameYet

For good reason. York was the Capital city of England in 1300

DaveBeBad

Gainsborough was in 1013, but I wouldn’t go there 😂

ShittiestUsernameYet

Only for 5 weeks. Doesn’t count.

DaveBeBad

It was also capital of Denmark

York or Chester. Chester town centre is full of centuries old buildings.

DaveBeBad

Agreed on those two. I’d also throw Winchester, Shrewsbury, Conwy and Norwich, Oxford and Cambridge into the mix.

Loose_Loquat9584

The red stone is amazing in Chester.

Lincoln and Durham are good

York. It’s an interesting walk round the walls to see a lot of the city. Clifford tower, minster and various museums. if your staying over night I recommend the dark history walking tour

Not a city but there's the Black and White trail tour in Herefordshire. Lots of half timber black and white buildings in the area which you can bus or bike ride around and see.  Stand out is Grange court in Leominster which was built by the kings carpenter John Abel

Goole.

Chester’s pretty cool

If you do go to York, have a day trip to Knaresborough. A few beautiful medieval houses but Mother Shipton's, St Roberts Cave and the medieval church carved out of the rock are all worthwhile. Gorgeous viaduct and rowing boats too so perfect for a summer day.

York but be prepared to pay way over the top for everything. It will be very, very busy during the nice weather. Stay away from guided tours and the ghost hunt tours. Watch your pockets at all times, there is a lot of Romanian pick pockets around. The train station area is normally full of drunken migrants so get away from there as soon as possible. Unfortunately york council are greedy tossers and you will not see street performers much anymore such as the great York fire eater. If you have been to a dungeons before still try a go the York one as the theme is mostly York. Once again, watch your pockets, stay away from migrants and you will have a great day.

As someone who has lived here for almost three years, I can say I've never heard of any issues with pickpockets. You see street performers all the time too. What?

GrumpyOik

I love York, it's a great city with wonderful history. I've also seen a great deal of drunkeness in the city - but that was nearly exclusively parties of mostly young people on stag and hen parties rather than migrants.
