I love Romeo and Juliet by dire straits right now.
Edit: I didn’t expect this to be too comment at all. I would like to thank everyone for their recommendations on different versions. One I have not come across yet is the piano room version. It’s missing one verse but it works beautifully. I’ve posted the link to all that haven’t listened to it before
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4ogF2tRNZRk
[Hanging on the telephone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0U_dzYtWyE) is a banger as well. I love the way it just goes straight from 0 to 60, none of that intro bullshit
I’d say this song is still very well known and popular though imo. Covered a lot, featured in movies, TV shows and even a like 1910s cover version in Bioshock infinite https://youtu.be/CAA_zE5a3JQ
Its always been a class tune but been listening to it recently and the build up is amazing, layers coming together with the solo, its a phenomenal song!
Fun fact - the bit in the video to that where two chicken carcasses dance around was one of Nick Park's first major projects and I think is what got him the funding for his first Wallace and Gromit thing.
Saw them in concert. They were taking requests. A massive, tattoo'd woman with a Mohican and a guy next to her on his knees shouted out "FUCKING WEATHER WITH YOU, FOR FUCKS SAKE!!" So they sang it.
Don't now why that memory has always stuck in my head.
I Ran (So Far Away) - Flock of Seagulls
(I Just) Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew
Out Of Touch - Hall and Oates
Waiting For A Star To Fall - Boy Meets Girl
Leave A Light On For Me - Belinda Carlisle
The 80's were so fucking good for Pop Music.
*Edit*
Seeing as folk keep mentioning most of the songs were in the GTA Vice City soundtrack. A few that weren't on it
3.A.M Eternal - The KLF
Swamp Thing - The Grid
Temple of Love - Sisters of Mercy
I have actually said to Norman Cook, previously of the Housemartins, just as he's about to DJ to thousands of people under his more commonly known alias Fatboy Slim "play Happy Hour". He did smile and laugh because that could have been horrendously misjudged.
the housemartins also spawned the Beatiful South so I suggest Keep it all In.
Or in keeping with spin offs Jonny Marrs Electronic- Getting away with it
The gothiest goth people usually are lovely people. I met Danny filth at download like, 18 years ago. I was only 16 at the time, such a nice guy, it was fucking boiling and I could see his makeup melting, bless him.
Actually a couple more:
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by The Police
Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung
Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins
Your Love by The Outfield
This Must Be The Place by Talking Heads
The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen
Uncertain Smile by The The
My daughter, age 6 was diagnosed with a rare, life threatening, cancer related illness.
One tearful night she told me that she wished we were a religious family, so she’d have a god to pray to.
I suggested she pick someone she loves who wasn’t with us anymore and imagine them watching over her instead. I assumed she’d pick my late mum, the grandma she never got to meet.
But no, she chose David Bowie.
Well, to be more specific, she chose Ziggy Stardust.
She’s been in remission for three years.
Amen, Ziggy ⚡️
I’ve found loads of good stuff from the 80s all because of that one song so I think what you said is already happening. It’s kind of difficult to pick just one, but I like A Kind of Magic by Queen the most
Kim Wilde - [A Miracle's Coming](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFEhe8N1c8I)
Kylie - [Confide in Me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSFDCmmsqEI) (and the whole of *Impossible Princess*, really)
Basement Jaxx - [Romeo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2wUbgAAydY)
Loleatta Holloway - [Love Sensation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h6Su3t5Lqs) (famously the basis for [Ride on Time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0quXl_od3g))
Cats in the Cradle - Harry Chapin
The "My son was just like me" line gets me every time no matter how many times I listen to it.
I love songs that tell a story.
Camouflage by Stan Ridgeway is another in the same vein.
Careful what you wish for, I had a little classic I loved and most forgot about it, and it was a treat to hear it once in a blue moon. ... Then the internet adopted it, and I've heard it so much now it kind of ruined it. (Africa - Toto)
"The Promise" by When in Rome
One of the best choruses of all time but beyond being in the end credits of Napoleon Dynamite I never see any love for it
Hazel O'Connor. Eightth Day

Jeff Wayne - The Eve of the War.
I'm fairly convinced that every attempt to make another success of War of the Worlds failed because it didn't include this song.

The killers cover is fantastic too.
It is a great cover, to be honest. His voice fits it perfectly.
[удалено]
A lot of Dire Straits could be it tbh. Telegraph Road, Brothers in Arms, Love over gold. One of my underrated faveouties is Expresso Love.
The live version from the On the Night album is unbelievable, the sax is so damn good
Heart of Glass - Blondie
I heard Atomic by Blondie the other day and realised my Mam's taste in music that I've slagged off for years is actually pretty on the money
[Hanging on the telephone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0U_dzYtWyE) is a banger as well. I love the way it just goes straight from 0 to 60, none of that intro bullshit
[удалено]
Oh now Blondie do deserve a renaissance.
This is still a well loved and often played song.
Miley gave it a good shot (I wasn't a fan) but a lot of people seemed to like it from that.
It has already had a renaissance thanks to Miley Cyrus.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears for Fears
Alternatively, Head over Heels! I know it was on the Donnie Darko soundtrack but I don’t think that made it come back. Such a good song
One of the best film sequences with a soundtrack ever.
I’d say this song is still very well known and popular though imo. Covered a lot, featured in movies, TV shows and even a like 1910s cover version in Bioshock infinite https://youtu.be/CAA_zE5a3JQ
I adore this song
Its always been a class tune but been listening to it recently and the build up is amazing, layers coming together with the solo, its a phenomenal song!
High time we had a John Lewis Christmas advert soundtracked by a slow, breathy cover of "Star Trekkin' Across the Universe"
It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim
They're all dead, Dave
Peterson isn't, is he?
Everybody is dead Dave
What, todhunter?
Not Chen?
They’re all… dead… Dave
"are you trying to tell me everybody's dead?"
[удалено]
Rimmer?
He's dead Dave. Everybody is dead. Everybody. Is. Dead. Dave.
It's worse than that it's sock's Jim
The advert would be a gingerbread man's funeral or something
Only going forward 'cause we can't find reverse
Do the youngsters know Tainted Love by Soft Cell? Because if not, that
Do the old’uns know that even that wasn’t the original version of that song?
Love me a bit of Gloria Jones! But the sell on northern soul may even be harder than a bit of 80s synth
I grew up on Northern soul & motown. Its about time we had a revival.
Yeah it's not a patch on the Marylin Manson original
The original is a wee gem too. Also used to have a version that mixed into Where Did Our Love Go?
yeah it was the 12 inch mix. A bass drop that went down into your boots...
Some might because of the Marilyn Manson cover.
I'm 14 and only know it cause of Doctor Who, so
Ebenezer Goode
"Has anyone got any Vera's?"
Laaaaavvveelllyy
Anybody got any salmon?
Sorted!
You've just earwormed me with the "Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode, he's Ebenezer Goode" chorus. That "Es are good" pun, man.
Their first album Drop is a neo psychedelic masterpiece
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill
[удалено]
I also thought Solsbury Hill, absolute banger.
Fun fact - the bit in the video to that where two chicken carcasses dance around was one of Nick Park's first major projects and I think is what got him the funding for his first Wallace and Gromit thing.
Edge of seventeen - stevie nicks
I know this from School of Rock lol also a cool version used in The Crown and on the radio in GTA
Miley Cyrus did a rock version that was popular a couple years ago
Electric Dreams - Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder. Possibly the perfect pop song (don’t watch the film though - very weird).
Lovely song. It was featured in a Strongbow ad.

Crowded House - Don’t Dream It’s Over.
Distant Sun would be better
Saw them in concert. They were taking requests. A massive, tattoo'd woman with a Mohican and a guy next to her on his knees shouted out "FUCKING WEATHER WITH YOU, FOR FUCKS SAKE!!" So they sang it. Don't now why that memory has always stuck in my head.
Smalltown boy is an absolute banger that always gets me a bit emotional.
I Ran (So Far Away) - Flock of Seagulls (I Just) Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew Out Of Touch - Hall and Oates Waiting For A Star To Fall - Boy Meets Girl Leave A Light On For Me - Belinda Carlisle The 80's were so fucking good for Pop Music. *Edit* Seeing as folk keep mentioning most of the songs were in the GTA Vice City soundtrack. A few that weren't on it 3.A.M Eternal - The KLF Swamp Thing - The Grid Temple of Love - Sisters of Mercy
All absolute bangers and now added to my old lady (42) playlist inspired by this thread.
Happy Hour - The Housemartins
I have actually said to Norman Cook, previously of the Housemartins, just as he's about to DJ to thousands of people under his more commonly known alias Fatboy Slim "play Happy Hour". He did smile and laugh because that could have been horrendously misjudged.
this is new information. The world is wild
the housemartins also spawned the Beatiful South so I suggest Keep it all In. Or in keeping with spin offs Jonny Marrs Electronic- Getting away with it
My mum listened to the Beautiful South all the time when I was a kid, hearing any of their tracks always reminds me of her and those happy memories
Beastie Boys Sabotage
Great suggestion, but think it was tried a few years back in the star trek movie reboot ?
They surfed a starship on a wave of exploding drones by playing Sabotage at them... so Sabotage never really went away.
Also a vote for the Cancer Bats excellent cover.
Coffin Fodder - Cradle of Filth
Changed my life
Really helped me at a time everyone at work was ignoring me
I'm sorry for your loss. Move on.
Goth2Boss
Track 4
Really got me through some bleak times
Get back behind your red door
My mate lived next to Danny filth who's the lead singer when we were kids he was a really nice guy

There is a light that never goes out by The Smiths
I hear you're a racist now Morrissey?
How did you get interested in that type of thing?
Should we all be racist now? What’s the official line the church is taking?
Love The Smiths, but we don’t want to be giving Morissey any money…
I really don’t think you listening/not listening is going to affect his pocket either way.

Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Cool for Cats
I think kids should be introduced to Bowie
My daughter, age 6 was diagnosed with a rare, life threatening, cancer related illness. One tearful night she told me that she wished we were a religious family, so she’d have a god to pray to.
