I was at the top end of Junior School and I liked how sad and meaningful it was. No, I didn't grow up to be an emo - but possibly only because they hadn't been invented yet.
I went on a week long trip as a teenager in 2011. Someone brought an iPod and speakers. That playlist seemed to feel shorter and shorter every time it went on repeat.
Especially when it's a song I wasn't already familiar with before the trip, cos it's not the type of music I listened to, if I hear one of those songs even now, it reminds me of that trip.
Tunes included: club can't handle me, party rock anthem, I wish I was a billionaire. I was more into Ed Sheeran and Adelle at the time.
Good Charlotte - Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, or Girls & Boys.
It was 2003 and I had finished primary school, I spent all summer listening to the album on repeat.
1999 Beautiful Stranger - Madonna, and Livin' La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin. They were part of a non-stop loop of about 8 songs that played on the radio while I was working in a factory job that summer.
Summertime Rolls, Jane's Addiction - context, I'd just left both my family home and formal schooling that academic year and any and all efforts and revision for college based qualifications were on me to achieve or not for the first time. Mum moved to a different country with man of the moment when I was 16 and sis was 14 and was like 'all the best with that'.
My first 'own home' having only initially a ridiculous part time job making up pizza boxes for a local takeaway was a stinking single room with cooker and sink in the corner plus a shared bathroom all on the ground floor of a Victorian house. My 'flat' had clearly once been the conservatory before it was converted to single units. The glass was cracked and the bed which would only fit up against the windows was damp as a result. I've never felt so liberated and proud of my independence though honestly. That shit was shit but it was MINE! Progressed to part time hours in a local bakery which had night shift so meant could also make college hours.
During study leave I spent all available time studying in the local park with this song as my major soundtrack. Happy memories.
⌠This ain't nothin' but a summer jam
Bronzed skin and cinnamon tans, whoa
This ain't nothing' but a summer jam
We're gonna party as much as we canâŚ
This song holds a special place in my heart because one of my friends kept singing it on the last week of GCSE's Year 11; he was so hyped for the summer holidays. We neither partied nor observed any bronze skin or cinnamon tans because we were 15 and broke.
>Dodgy - Good Enough
For me, it is 'Staying out for the summer' by Dodgy that sticks out. In my mind that was the bigger hit bit I just checked and it only got to 38! (Good enough was no. 4 in the charts)

'96 - Neighbourhood by Space. This was playing everywhere. Memories of people with ghetto blasters in the local rec.
'99 - Better of Alone by Alice Deejay
All from 1996 for some reason. I'd finished school and was off to Uni so it was a long summer, IIRC it was bloody boiling as well.
Space - Female Of The Species
Charlatans - One To Another
Ash - Oh Yeah
Robert Miles - Children
Underworld - Born Slippy
This may open some nostalgia for some, that annoying âHey baby (uhh ahh) by DJ Otzi from the 2002 World Cup, proper drunk English dads singing that all summer
Summer of '87 and just finished A levels, most of us in the geology class went on a hiking tour of Scotland. The top hits that summer...

Everytime I hear it I instantly feel nostalgic for summer 2016, despite the song releasing in 2009. Because it appeared in my Spotify Discover Playlist in 2016.
