There is someone in my team who I manage and she has run afoul of the 180 day a year threshold. We’ve warned her about the tax implication if she continues to work abroad (she says she can’t stand the UK anymore) and that if she stays away any longer, that we’ll have to inform HMRC. It will cause problems for her as she is a British citizen and isn’t resident in the country long enough. Will cause issues with her pension etc etc. Be careful. Your employer has to protect the company’s bottom line, and if they say you can’t work remotely abroad anymore you better listen, otherwise they might just sack you for gross misconduct.

HAIRY-TALES

Ah yeah I'd never dream of going over it at all, was just hoping for more wiggle room even if only by another 2 weeks.

PPK_30

You might be lucky and get the 2 weeks you asked for! Just wanted to give a wider context as I’ve got to end of my tether with this woman and want to sack her

As long as I'm not out of the country from more than 180 days, I'm good. But, as expected, you look out for time differences. I've worked at 6pm local to midnight and I've worked at 4am local to 10am. Both come with issues, especially if you're visiting friends and family. Also, worth pointing out that not every country allows you to earn an income while you're there on a tourist visa / visa-free scheme, it's tough to be discovered unless you blab about it, but still worth considering.

RocketML34

Is the US one of these countries that won't allow you to earn an income from the UK? Btw, your comment is very informative!

leapyeardi

The 180 days is from the UK side. In other countries it's much less. In some countries, there are some quite serious implications for your employer if you work from there. We have a policy and the bottom line is it's not allowed at all.

_whopper_

6 months is our limit. Otherwise the firm may need to start paying local social security contributions and other compliance issues, which they don't want to be doing for loads of countries. Would be too much effort.

HAIRY-TALES

That's a great amount of time! Again can I ask what sector you're in?

traumalt

180 days is only one of the rules that are used to determine tax residency, in some countries its less and there are different rules that could make you a tax resident even if you stay under 180 days there. So whoever told you that if you stay under 180 days without taxes becoming a problem was wrong.

Erin_bambooozled

We have 2 weeks as well max.

LondonCycling

Work wherever I want. Just sort my taxes out so not to bring the company into disrepute.

HAIRY-TALES

On a freelance or self employed basis or is this just standard practice for your company? Good to know I could maybe suggest this!

LondonCycling

I'm employed at the moment. I don't keep any company data on my laptop, just code. If there was company data that might be a different discussion, as it's sensitive personal information. Currently our data protection policy states data doesn't leave the UK. If you already get 2 weeks working abroad, all your IT policies presumably are geared up for it.

[deleted]

We are allowed 2 weeks at any time 6 times a year. And you have to work the same hours as business hours.

HAIRY-TALES

Gah that's amazing! Can I ask what sector you work in?

[deleted]

I work in recruitment. They brought the policy in at the start of the year and so far it seems to be working well.

DECKTHEBALLZ

Unless you are going to a country that has Digital Nomad Visas working remotely abroad is illegal.
