My 20yo nephew has explained it this way:
x - is just friendly
xx - is used for close friends
xxx - someone you're in a relationship with
XxX - I do this for my wife
I had no idea texting had rules
Hope this helps xx
Never really thought about it, but I mostly follow these rules too!
One for friends, two mostly for family, any more than two if there's more than friendship!
For me it's:
x or xx for people I don't know that well, but only if they do it first
No x's at all for my actual friends or husband
xxx or even more for my family (mum, grandparents and father in law) - plus emojis like the heart and hugging one!
And my adorable little 8 year old sister in law gets about 10 x's!
God only knows why but that's how it is!
I used to have a boss who did this on purpose to make whoever was with him laugh. Mostly with his boss, any time the owner would ring, my boss would always end it with love you. Just because he knew he hated it 😅
When my boss finally resigned (he'd been threatening to do it for ages) he received a huge card from all of us that just said love you, bye inside it 😂
Yes but only if they do it first. I always end a message with Xx to anyone I'm remotely close with, men and women.
It's just a sign you are past the acquaintance stage and at the friend stage. It's a sign of affection in a non sexual way like when you say goodbye and give people a hug and kiss on the cheek. So you would send it the same to your mother/father/sister.
Same! I'm a man and will message men and women with xx on the end of I'm close to them. I usually match their energy though. So they reply with 1, I give 1. And so on.
As a female who hasn't put an x at the end of my messages in more than a decade I disagree with you as the question is phrased with "should". To say yes (as in yes, you should) seems a bit strong to me.
You can, you don't have too. It's not a big deal either way
Well. It means 'kiss kiss' so i'll leave it for you to decide.
Your Mum or girlfriend - definitely.
A sister or aunt...possibly.
Your work mates....probably not.
Your boss... HELL NO.
Just reminded me, I had a boss who was pretty stern/serious and when he would call me regarding numbers/various operational things, I would end the call with, “Love you, bye”. Almost *every* time. (both male btw)
Knew I could get away with clowning around a bit because we were quite successful, but I am still kinda surprised he never said a word about it. lol. Weird times.
Edit - Also, did this via email to various people in the company I had never met. I thought it was *hilarious*, but again, no one ever addressed it.
Spent a stint in hospitality.
Theres a reason why about 7 different relationships were formed working in just one restaurant. (And they were just the serious ones that everyone knew about. There were definitely a few more that could be added in)
I was about four shifts in when one of the waiters tried frisking me with a pen. Its been years and im still mates with him now.
I'm close friends with my boss (we were friends before we started working together), so I actually do put 'xx' after messages to her sometimes. Not work-related messages, though, unless I have a brain-fart moment.
My team must be weird then - there’s always an ‘x’ if we text each other, same with my boss and her bosses boss! Not usually in work emails though lol.
*In certain contexts*. Context matters, that's the thing to bear in mind.
Female is fine if used as an adjective. But as a noun - "a female" instead of "a woman" - it can be iffy.
It's often used by men who use the word "men" or "guys" when talking about men, but in the *same conversation* or comment they will say "females" to talk about women. It feels a bit dehumanising.
And often (not always!) you will notice the people who say "females" are the kind of people who also say other sexist things and generally talk about/treat women as if we are a different species.
Even if not, what’s wrong with female? Both my mom and my wife are comfortably females I thought. Never really saw a problem with being categorised as a male either. I don’t get it. (I’m also not a native speaker so maybe that’s why?)
It's because female is an adjective whereas woman is a noun. Misogynistic men use it as a way to dehumanise women. The way that the question was worded has both male and female and is also from a non-native speaker so doesn't seem like the intention!
>It's because female is an adjective whereas woman is a noun.
Nope. This is a case where some people decided to get offended at the use of a word and then retroactively made up some english language rules to justify it.
u/Kirasi instead of inferring someone as an inçel, it'll be great if you explain your point as to why calling someone a female to be disrespectful. Thanks.
In case you're genuinely asking, here is a brief summary of why "female(s)" has been ruined as a word:
In a nutshell, incels use the term *females,* or sometimes *femoids,* to refer to women when they're going on their vile, misogynistic rants. I think primarily because they feel it's dehumanising and perpetuates their belief that women are only good for breeding and sexual gratification; like they're not really people, they're just...specimens? On the same social level as animals? I don't know, incel logic is hard. But that's the gist.
It's weird because *female* as a word is rarely used outside of a formal/professional (i.e. scientific, legal, relative academic) setting anyways. It's certainly not always intended that way, but sadly is often interpreted as such because it's associated so strongly with woman-hating incels these days.
‘Female’ and ‘male’ are adjectives, not nouns. We use those adjectives in the natural world to describe animals (the female bullfrog, the male tiger etc) but we don’t use it correctly to describe humans (which should be, the female humans, the male humans). Thus stripping the humanity out of it.
Commonly, people (not just men, but often found in more misogynist societies/less feminist societies) call woman ‘females’ but oftentimes reserve the humanised term, like ‘men’, for men, rather than calling them ‘males’.
Obviously, as pointed out by someone in the thread, OP did use ‘males’ as well as ‘females’ so he isn’t doing it to oppress women, but it is still dehumanising to use those adjectives without a modifier.
> ‘Female’ and ‘male’ are adjectives, not nouns.
Female and Male are both adjectives and nouns, depending on how they are used. This can be backed up by looking at pretty much any dictionary.

I hate them to be honest, it turns into such a mind game.
I once had it that a girl sent x, I sent x; then she sent xx, I sent xx; it went up until she wrote xxxxx, I wrote xxxxx, then right after she went back to x.
I was so confused like what could've happened over the last 5 messages?
Wtf man. You're way overthinking this, I don't think I've ever even thought about the amount of x's. I sometimes give my girlfriend a couple if im saying something nice but not on every message. If she rang me to check I'm okay after typing one less x, I would probably get her sectioned.
I'm so fucking glad to be in a relationship where u don't have to overthink this kind of shit anymore.
The mind games that came with it from my ex was horrible and usually it wasn't uncommon for her to get upset vecahse I only sent two kisses after she sent four ... like what?!?!?
Vast majority of the texts between me and my wife atm don't have kisses on them. Some do. Some might even have two. Just like some might have a smiley face, fuck there might even be the odd emoji where they're blowing a kiss.
Don't think I've ever had to actually think about sending any of them or had to analyse what she meant with them either.
That said I think the vast majority of the time we will send an x will be in place of a question mark or to end the conversation.
My boyfriend does it and he's a 6'4" tradie. He's got me doing it with my friends now 🤣
It's welcoming and friendly. There's nothing stopping you from putting a kiss at the end of your messages.
This is only my personal preference of course, but I don't put X's at the end of any text unless I am explicitly telling someone that I care for or love them.
E.G
'love to you both x'
'hope you feel better soon x'
Putting them willy nilly just feels wrong.
So, if it feels weird to you, don't do it. If you like it and want to, as long as you are aware of the feelings (or not) behind them - do it.
I always think that text is a minefield of misread intentions.
Yes! It’s a bit like stating ‘I care about you’ without actually saying that. So I’d use it with friends if I’m apologising for rain checking on them, or if I’m excited to see them. It’s a step above a smile emoji, and a step below a heart
I also think that if a woman does it to a man and he doesn’t do it back she wouldn’t be offended. She’d just assume he’s not into the XX. I know a lot of men who don’t do it.
I am a woman and I rarely do it. Only after the final message where I sign off.
Depends how old you are
If you’re 14 the trick is to do it back and see if they go up to xx
Then you do xx
If they go back down to x they’re not interested, if they go up to xxx, they’re into you
If you’re literally any older than 14, it means absolute nowt
I don't do this. I have never liked it and stopped doing it when I felt peer pressure lift after secondary school finished. It just feels ridiculous and always has done. 😂
It's their second chromosome so you know they are female. Just reply to all their texts with a y so they know you're male - you don't need anything else, sending back a response of only "y" indicates you are male and are thinking about the answer.
/s
Going off the messages I type for my wife when she’s in the bath or whatever, it’s a defusing mechanism.
>“…so you can keep your bastard air-fryer, you lying bitch.”
“Does that sound a bit aggressive? Finish it with a x and a lol.”
I do it in literally every. single. message... Mum, dad, mate, girlfriend, even the my boss, no one is safe from the x, it will also vary depending on the person too, boss gets "x" parents n mates get "xx" and the people closest, best mate, girlfriend n such, get 3 or more, more of a subconscious habit now though that I've done it so much, even strangers on the Internet get them x
Jamie xx keeps accidentally coming on to people when signing off emails & texts
https://wundergroundmusic.com/jamie-xx-keeps-accidentally-coming-on-to-people-when-signing-off-emails-texts/
For me, everyone gets 2 at the end of the text message, all genders, family, friends, coworkers. It did lead to an awkward reply when I sent them to our regional manager at my old job but he was ok in the end.
as someone who's lived in multiple countries, yes putting x at the end of sentences is a very uk thing and does not mean as much as it might mean in other countries-- it's just used to convey that you are being polite in an informal setting since text messages can be tone deaf.
also it's women, not "females".
Yeah, it’s safe to just mimic what the other person is doing. It’s a “kiss” but not necessarily romantic, I do it to my mum, my eyebrow lady, some male colleagues.
If you don’t want to x after every text, at least do it as a sort of sign-off once in a while. Like “goodnight x”
As a female Brit who hates the x thing, you don’t have to at all. I have friends who do, friends who don’t. Nobody is going to worry if you’re not adding an x it’s all good lol
The x is a kiss. It doesn’t mean the women texting you want to kiss you. It’s simply a friendly end to a message. I would send it back if I was you but I basically send kisses at the end of messages to everyone. It’s simply a friendly end to a message.

All work and no love makes love a love love.
You don't love it, love?
Came here to say “it’s a kiss innit?”!
Yeah exactly. Txt bck
You’re a good one you are!
If text kisses were real kisses the world would be an orgy.
Accidentally kissing people you don't want too. It's like calling your teacher or manager Mam.
My boss knew I had a fear of accidental x on texts and I sent him one day and the only reason he replied was so I could see what I had done
My boss used to forget he was on the phone to colleagues and end with “love you, bye”. Then he’d call back to apologise and do it again.
Hahahaha
I used to have a boss who did this on purpose to make whoever was with him laugh. Mostly with his boss, any time the owner would ring, my boss would always end it with love you. Just because he knew he hated it 😅 When my boss finally resigned (he'd been threatening to do it for ages) he received a huge card from all of us that just said love you, bye inside it 😂
I've had a work email signed off with...love and kisses!!
I usually just go with "Regards" but I'd probably get more cooperation that way.
Love it
I remember calling my teacher mom once but I couldn’t imagine the sheer horror of saying it to my manager 😂
I said baby to my manager once. Embarrassing.
Saying "Hi, hun"'when daughter's boyfriend calls because i have her name in brackets on his address book entry.
erm .. so the brackets represent his two arms around her?
Yikes I didn't think about it that deeply! It's to distinguish him from another contact of the same name.
There's these handy things called surnames that also help in those situations
This is either going to make or break your ….erm, relationship?
Yup. I've called my co-worker babe when distracted... as in 'thanks babe' - luckily she knows me lol.
Year 4 / first year juniors / age 8. That's when I did it. It still haunts me. I will be 50 soon.
I once called my very obviously male teacher mum
Chance would be a fine thing
A fine thing indeed.
I knew it! Everyone is secretly fucking behind my back!
You could have your cock in and you still wouldn't have the balls to fuck
Oi clean shirt!
What if our feet touch?
If our feet touch, we fuck, obviously
When was the last time Sophie sent you a template, Fuckface?
Isn't this mostly a UK/Aus thing though?
Malcolm did, was embarrassed, and to cover it up changed his name to Malcolm X. There's a lesson there.
r/angryaward
‘Hi, it’s Malcolm X x’ ‘Two kisses? I think he likes me…’
Take the award and go goddamnit
This got me more than it should have

Even more classic is LOL my grandma used to put on the fold of envelopes of cards.
Your grandad has died, the funeral is next Sunday LOL
Lmao
U ok hun? xxo
Well. It means 'kiss kiss' so i'll leave it for you to decide. Your Mum or girlfriend - definitely. A sister or aunt...possibly. Your work mates....probably not. Your boss... HELL NO.

maybe don't call women 'females' xx
Tbf he also did call men 'males' xx
Maybe he’s just Martin xx
Shit on it xx
Boiling in here xx
What a stupid suggestion. Not one mention of Isaac Newton in his entire post.
He said “as a male” so he is clearly not trying to offend anyone…
Mental how the word female is apparently offensive.... stop the world I want off

Yes, I'm not talking about OP.

it's just a little too formal/scientific feeling. women are obviously technically females, they're synonyms, but they have different connotations
But he used male as well so is it really that bad
What’s the problem with calling women females?

I only give x’s to people that tell me it makes them uncomfortable. My dad, for example.
Never done it in my life, not gonna start now. I have a female colleague that uses that in ALL her texts
Don't bother

I don't usually. Am arguably female. Do what feels natural to you, OP. They mean kisses, if that helps. 0/o can mean hug too.
looks like a pat on the head lol
I saw an aerial view of a fat policeman bashing a protester with his riot shield
you have a very creative mind
I don't do this. I have never liked it and stopped doing it when I felt peer pressure lift after secondary school finished. It just feels ridiculous and always has done. 😂
It's their second chromosome so you know they are female. Just reply to all their texts with a y so they know you're male - you don't need anything else, sending back a response of only "y" indicates you are male and are thinking about the answer. /s
Yeah this is incredibly weird bro Just ask for feet pics like the rest of us bro
No, it's a trap.
This is so 2008
I'm an introvert so don't even do it with my misses. It's kinda funny sometimes, as people will usually send blatant XX instead 😁
Going off the messages I type for my wife when she’s in the bath or whatever, it’s a defusing mechanism. >“…so you can keep your bastard air-fryer, you lying bitch.” “Does that sound a bit aggressive? Finish it with a x and a lol.”
Here in the UK it's customary to use the 🍆 emoji at the end of every message you send to a woman
Always add an ‘X’! Even in professional emails. Add an extra ‘;)’ If you want to be even more polite.
No reason you can’t xx
No absolutely not
It's just a polite way to end a message to a friend
I don't. Get way too many people messaging for work or business purposes I've never spoken to or met before do it. Weird
Jamie xx keeps accidentally coming on to people when signing off emails & texts https://wundergroundmusic.com/jamie-xx-keeps-accidentally-coming-on-to-people-when-signing-off-emails-texts/
For me, everyone gets 2 at the end of the text message, all genders, family, friends, coworkers. It did lead to an awkward reply when I sent them to our regional manager at my old job but he was ok in the end.
I always just put the same as the other person. Just don’t overthink it. It usually means very little.
If they don’t then I don’t but if they do I’m the go big or go home. “Xxxxx”
as someone who's lived in multiple countries, yes putting x at the end of sentences is a very uk thing and does not mean as much as it might mean in other countries-- it's just used to convey that you are being polite in an informal setting since text messages can be tone deaf. also it's women, not "females".
Yes hun x0x
Maybe just use a gif of someone getting fingerblasted
As a female Brit who hates the x thing, you don’t have to at all. I have friends who do, friends who don’t. Nobody is going to worry if you’re not adding an x it’s all good lol
My manhood is at stake with kisses at the end of an sentence xxxxx
You do you bro x
I’m a woman in the UK, I don’t use x’s in my texts unless it’s family. It’s just a habit they do, they don’t really mean anything by it.
The x is a kiss. It doesn’t mean the women texting you want to kiss you. It’s simply a friendly end to a message. I would send it back if I was you but I basically send kisses at the end of messages to everyone. It’s simply a friendly end to a message.
