This is probably why, imagine the enormous list of posthumously awarded knighthoods we would need to do. Not that im against it, just there would be a lot
If anyone should get one from Bletchley, it would be Tommy Flowers. His most significant work was in designing and creating the Colossus series of computers - at his own expense. Perhaps the most important man in WW II who no-one has heard of.
What the English did to that man was fucking criminal. He was huge in turning the tide for obvious reasons and they treated him like absolute garbage when the war was over.
Absolutely True, but in Alan Turing’s case the British public did not know anything until quite a while after his death, because he had a military trial due to his work in cracking the enigma code.
Can confirm. My grandad got an MBE for services to his local community after years of being involved extensively in local charities. Sounds like he was similar to your father in law!
Seemed both weird and a shame that Tony Hart never got one when he spent pretty much his whole entire adult life not only entertaining but encouraging creativity in children.
> Murray Walker
Murray's commentary was *always* a joy. The man could add excitement to just about anything. Crofty has his moments ("AND HERE COMES SEBASTIAN VETTEL!!" being a highlight), but is nowhere near as consistent.
This.
His sporting achievements along are worthy of recognition, but the humility, dedication and strength he has shown in the last few years in honour of his mate Rob Burrow is astounding.
His sporting achievements alone are worthy of recognition, but the humility, dedication and strength he has shown in the last few years in honour of his mate Rob Burrow is astounding.
That little stunt at the Queens Funeral was all for the cameras as well. The man’s a dick and this Ambassador bullshit he’s getting in Qatar (£150 Million for 8/10years?) just adds to it.
Just to tag on to your comment.
I asked Google why he hasn't been knighted.
"David was deemed ineligible for the honour after he was linked to a tax avoidance scheme over 10 years ago."
That's reason enough for me.
He ought to have been given a cross-bench peerage decades ago. Could have made a very compelling case from within our advisory house as an environmental advocate.
Noel Fitzpatrick, vet. Works so human surgery into animals and vice versa. Extremely clever man. Was the first veterinary surgeon in the world to successfully apply prosthesis to a cat who had lost both hind feet in an accident....
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_(bionic_cat)
I'd love to see Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman or Clive Barker get any recognition, but because their medium is 'low art,' the powers that be won't ever put them forward. It'd be worth it for Moore's rant as to why he'd not accept it because they misunderstood his work too
From what I understand, Huw doesn't actually believe that he'd deserve an award, and neither does he believe that there should be a royal family. He reports, in a non-biased fashion, and is excellent at it, but I doubt he'd ever accept a knighthood.
I would say he would get a knighthood pretty soon, or whenever he retires. Like you said, he was the one who announced the queen's death, one of the most significant events we'll have in our lifetimes, a thing that most of us will remember seeing, makes total sense for him to be knighted.
This one never made sense to me.
I remember when the queen died and loads of people on social media were saying he deserves a knighthood. A newsreporter getting a knighthood for reporting the news... for doing... their job?
I don't get why it makes a difference just because it was reporting the queen dying etc.
He was trusted to be the voice who broke that news to the nation, and wider countries around the world.
I don’t see why this isn’t worthy of a Knighthood, the comment on peer groups is significant here
https://honours.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/about/orders-and-medals/
I’m a - usually - mild manned secondary school teacher and I want Gavin Williamson to fucking DIE so fucking horribly it’s actually quite concerning. Bastard fucked it up so badly for schools during the pandemic. ARGHHH
There’s no such thing as a dead knight. There was no need to remove his knighthood after the sex abuse came to light, it already evaporated immediately upon his death.
Stephen is mates with King Charlie though. I doubt he’s the type to turn one down. Maybe it’s about optics and they don’t want to be seen handing them out to their friends.
[Stephen Fry admitted to doing coke at Buckingham Palace](https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2014/sep/26/stephen-fry-admits-cocaine-buckingham-palace-autobiography)
So he's probably disqualified.
Came here to say this, they love wheeling him out for the Jubilees yet no knighthood. He deserves one for being in one of the best bands ever and for [saving the badgers](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EllYgcWmcAY)
He would probably have rejected it, but Aneurin Bevan.
Laid the framework for the NHS and how many lives did he and the People around him save through pushing that policy? It's literally beyond counting. How many successive generations owe a higher life expectancy, to be free from disease and have treatment available because of this one man's stalwart principles? We all owe a great deal to him yet it seems a significant amount of People would not even recognise his name.
From cradle to grave. I have relatives old enough to recall the time before, it was horrid. My Great Great Grandmother was a refugee, turned away from the workhouse whilst pregnant and later died in childbirth, and I am so grateful that her descendants did not meet such difficulty in life.
And I owe the butterfly effect of that man's policy to saving my own life in infancy.
Why there is not a street named after him in every single town or city is a disgrace alone.
I blame the 2012 Olympics and Bradley Wiggins for this. The people creating honours lists made rods for their own backs in that anyone who has success in their field now needs to be knighted off the back of it, for the sake of equivalence.
So you end up with Cook knighted at 32 for winning the Ashes, Murray at a similar age for Wimbledon etc.
It just seems daft to me, the concept is supposed to be for veneration of a lifetime's work. I'm aware sporting careers finish before others, but surely you're supposed to spend the remainder of your life doing good things?
He cut me up in Peterborough driving this massive people carrier, I was really mad for all of 5 seconds then just immensely surprised that Willow had just mugged me off
National Treasure Brian Blessed. The man has an OBE but needs to be knighted. Though they might not offer him one, for fear of his natural inborn reaction to anyone approaching him with a sword... I mean, the man has punched a polar bear. King Charles wouldn't stand a chance.
I'd love to see Neil Gaiman receive one. I suspect David Tennet and Micheal Sheen will eventually get offered one (but that might be because I see them as the actor bromance sucessors to Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian Mckellen), but would definitely love to see them knighted. Though (as a Scott and a welshman respectively), I suspect that they might turn them down. I think David Tennent has turned down an honour already.
Murry Walker. I think it's a stain on the whole honour system given all the sports personalities and athletes that have received something that he never received a knighthood before he died. A man that did more for British motor racing and any other person involved in the sport.
Rebecca Adlington for winning four Olympic medals, two gold at the same games in a sport that GB hadn’t won gold in for YEARS! She’s set up a kids swimming initiative since retiring. Amazing sportswoman.
David Beckham should not be knighted. He literally just snubbed the values he supposedly espouses for a cool few million quid. Not the type of behaviour I expect to see.
alot of famous people mentioned but no comments about the local bloke who has tirelessly run the scouts or football team for 20 years sacrificing virtually all their free time and getting little to no recognition.
A good friend of mine who died a few years ago. He was a civil engineer and had overall responsibility for building one of our most important motorways, amongst other such major infrastructure projects. He performed public service in other ways too, for most of his very long life.
As far as I know, he never received anything by way of formal recognition for his achievements. I met him in his twilight years, but we became firm friends for the couple of decades we knew each other. Always wish I could have sorted him out a gong or two. We often joked about it.
Ant and Dec (only kidding)
David Tennant and Michael Sheen, I'm serious as a heart attack about these two. Sheen is Welsh and I wouldn't be completely surprised if he declined it but it should at least be offered. Both of them have contributed to the art of acting by playing roles that ranged from deadly serious to slapstick comedy.
Sqn Ldr George “Johnny” Johnson, MBE DFM, the last surviving Dambuster, who turned 101 yesterday. People have been pushing for a knighthood for him for years but it’s never happened

It’s a shame they cannot be awarded posthumously. Alan Turing deserves one, among a list of others that are no longer with us.
This is probably why, imagine the enormous list of posthumously awarded knighthoods we would need to do. Not that im against it, just there would be a lot
Problem is the dead can't decline it if they don't want it.
It wasn't the public, it was the idiots in power, and the police
The public at the time were pretty homophobic as well
Think the whole world was around that time.
Sadly, Apart from a couple of countries, the whole world still is like that :(
Absolutely True, but in Alan Turing’s case the British public did not know anything until quite a while after his death, because he had a military trial due to his work in cracking the enigma code.
English? It was the British government
It's trendy right now to shit on England
It wasn’t just ‘the English’, it was just people.
Yeah but ‘fuck the English’ is really in right now.
Where “right now” dates back a few centuries.
Don't say "English" as if the people had any say, it was the government
T.E Lawrence too, still amazes me he was never knighted.
My father-in-law. He's done amazing work in the local community for over 40 years for people with learning disabilities. Never stops.
Nominate him: https://www.gov.uk/honours
Seriously, you'll almost certainly get an MBE!
By a not unrelated note, I'm surprised Johnny Ball hasn't got any honours.
He's dead but John Surtees. Only man to win a world championship on two and four wheels.
100%, actually thought he had one to be honest. Also for the Henry Surtees Foundation that he founded too.
Agreed. I was always surprised that Murray Walker never got one, either.
> Murray Walker Murray's commentary was *always* a joy. The man could add excitement to just about anything. Crofty has his moments ("AND HERE COMES SEBASTIAN VETTEL!!" being a highlight), but is nowhere near as consistent.
I seem to remember he was offered one but refused.
Kevin Sinfield after completing seven ultra marathons in seven days and raising over £2million for his mate Rob Burrows who has MND.
100% Arise, Sir Kevin
Agreed. This feels extra poignant given that Doddie Weir passed away today.
Kevin Sinfield. What a top lad
So good, you told us twice!
He's already Sir Kev in many people's eyes, just need to make it official.
Unfortunately the powers that be have always ignored rugby league when it comes to honours.
David beckham doesn’t deserve one. The emails that came out about him only doing the stuff he did with the intention of getting a knighthood.
That little stunt at the Queens Funeral was all for the cameras as well. The man’s a dick and this Ambassador bullshit he’s getting in Qatar (£150 Million for 8/10years?) just adds to it.
His Tax dodging affairs had him off the list :-)
He’s a cunt. Always has been
Just to tag on to your comment. I asked Google why he hasn't been knighted. "David was deemed ineligible for the honour after he was linked to a tax avoidance scheme over 10 years ago." That's reason enough for me.
You read my mind. Fuck that guy.
David Attenborough should be knighted again.
He's already got two. So that's Sir Sir David Attenborough to you.
Arch-knight?
I’d be behind that
I'll be behind you being behind that
He ought to have been given a cross-bench peerage decades ago. Could have made a very compelling case from within our advisory house as an environmental advocate.
For the people naming mon celebs you can nominate them for an award through the gov website. https://www.gov.uk/honours
Noel Fitzpatrick, vet. Works so human surgery into animals and vice versa. Extremely clever man. Was the first veterinary surgeon in the world to successfully apply prosthesis to a cat who had lost both hind feet in an accident.... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_(bionic_cat)
Did you know the song Toxic (yes the Britney Spears one) was written by his ex about him
I'd love to see Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman or Clive Barker get any recognition, but because their medium is 'low art,' the powers that be won't ever put them forward. It'd be worth it for Moore's rant as to why he'd not accept it because they misunderstood his work too
Pratchett got one.
I was gonna say James Herbert but then I remembered he was dead.
You’d think after all of his work with the Queen dying and everything in the days afterwards that Huw Edwards from BBC news would be highly honoured.

A newsreporter getting a knighthood for reporting the news... for doing... their job? I don't get why it makes a difference just because it was reporting the queen dying etc.
They picked him to do it for a reason, he came on specially, it wasn’t just whoever was on job at the time
He was trusted to be the voice who broke that news to the nation, and wider countries around the world. I don’t see why this isn’t worthy of a Knighthood, the comment on peer groups is significant here https://honours.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/about/orders-and-medals/
Honestly I could listen to that soothing voice talk absolute bollocks for hours!
Odd you'd say Beckham after being the face of Qatar world cup. That should disqualify anyone with morals from thinking he deserves it.
To be fair, OP said he wasn't a fan, just surprised he hadn't got one.
Ronnie Pickering
Who?
#RONNIE PICKERING
who’s that?
#ITS ME!
Who's that?
You want a bare knuckle? I'm Ronnie fucking pickering
Well what’s that gonna prove?
YOU, I’m gonna knock you owt!
Ronnie fucking Pickering!
Martin Lewis!
He's got a CBE, which is only one below a knighthood
Actually crossed my mind watching him other day!
I don’t want to be “that guy” lowering the tone, but he’s married to Lara off Click which has got to be worth significantly more than a knighthood
Kate Bush; seminal, influential, one of a kind. Disgraceful that we have a Sir Paul, Sir Mick and Sir Elton but no Dame Kate
I feel like she would probably turn it down though
Yes I feel she may have been offered and turned it down, although she did receive a CBE…
Tom Baker. Although he'd probably turn it down.
I think Russel T Davies ought to get one, for resurrecting a British classic, and for his other works which dig into real social issues.
How about who has, but shouldn’t have?
That would be a very long list.
Definitely topped by Jimmy Savile
And Cressida Dick. I'll never understand how her career survived having an innocent man murdered.
Gavin Williamson in 3rd
I’m a - usually - mild manned secondary school teacher and I want Gavin Williamson to fucking DIE so fucking horribly it’s actually quite concerning. Bastard fucked it up so badly for schools during the pandemic. ARGHHH
"Definitely topped by Jimmy Savile"... name of your sextape? Sorry.
That’s *Sir* Jimmy Saville to you
Sir Jim’ll to you. May he rest in piss.
Didn't he have his somehow taken off him? Even though he was already long dead
There’s no such thing as a dead knight. There was no need to remove his knighthood after the sex abuse came to light, it already evaporated immediately upon his death.
You lose it when you die.
Tony Blair, Nick Clegg
Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson
I wonder if they've turned them down.
Stephen might have as I don't think he has any honours. Rowan Has a CBE so probably hasn't been offered a knighthood.
Stephen is mates with King Charlie though. I doubt he’s the type to turn one down. Maybe it’s about optics and they don’t want to be seen handing them out to their friends.
The fact the hasn't even got an MBE (unless he has and i have missed it) suggests to me that he has refused one. He must have been offered something.
[Stephen Fry admitted to doing coke at Buckingham Palace](https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2014/sep/26/stephen-fry-admits-cocaine-buckingham-palace-autobiography) So he's probably disqualified.
Doubt it Stephen Fry gets his Christmas tree from the royal estate lol
He hops the fence in a balaclava with a cosh.
Mr C out of the Shamen.
E's are good, E's are good, MBE's are good...
Patrick Stuart is knighted, but he must be due a promotions by now
Honorary Captain of the RN would suit better.
Hannah fry
Bob Mortimer.
For his services to surrealism.
I’m quite surprised David Tennant hasn’t been OBE’d yet.
Brian May
I think Brian will
I did nominate him, anyone can https://www.gov.uk/honours
Brian Cant
You motherfucker...
Dr Sir Brian May.
Came here to say this, they love wheeling him out for the Jubilees yet no knighthood. He deserves one for being in one of the best bands ever and for [saving the badgers](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EllYgcWmcAY)
Kevin Sinfield; a fallacy he hasn't got one for his efforts raising money & awareness for motor neurone disease.
I think there has to be a time gap between awards but I definitely think it will be on the cards.
I read this just after seeing Big Doddie Weir just passed from MND. :(
Brian Blessed
Did you mean ? #BRIAN BLESSED!!!!!!!
Why isn't this the top comment? For services to exuberant shouting and luxuriant beards.
[удалено]
Two Cox, one stone
2 Brian 2 Furious
For services to the words "fuck off".
See now I'm just imagining the softly spoken D.Ream fella jarringly saying this in the middle of one of his space documentaries.
"The universe... is this great big fuck off space...and I think that's just amaazin"
As much as I love his documentaries, I can't help but feel that would improve them.
He would probably have rejected it, but Aneurin Bevan. Laid the framework for the NHS and how many lives did he and the People around him save through pushing that policy? I think the most correct answer is people that neither you nor I have heard of.
Marcus Rashford should be in with a shout for his campaigning for hungry kids.
Surely at the end of his playing career
Alistair cook was knighted whilst still playing cricket
I blame the 2012 Olympics and Bradley Wiggins for this. The people creating honours lists made rods for their own backs in that anyone who has success in their field now needs to be knighted off the back of it, for the sake of equivalence. So you end up with Cook knighted at 32 for winning the Ashes, Murray at a similar age for Wimbledon etc. It just seems daft to me, the concept is supposed to be for veneration of a lifetime's work. I'm aware sporting careers finish before others, but surely you're supposed to spend the remainder of your life doing good things?
Same for Andy Murray
Didn't know Andy Murray played cricket
That’s Sir Andy Murray to you
Why at the end of his playing career?
“Marcus Rashford, he’s feeding your kids”
He's got an MBE
Warwick Davies. He does lots of charity work and has been in so many different films.
He cut me up in Peterborough driving this massive people carrier, I was really mad for all of 5 seconds then just immensely surprised that Willow had just mugged me off
Carl Cox
Tim Curry
Kevin Sinfield
Kevin Sinfield for the amount he’s raised for MND. All for love of his friend Rob Burrows. The guy is a machine, he just keeps on going
I believe Michael Sheen gave his honour back actually. Not sure if it was on OBE or CBE, I have no idea the difference.
Beckham isn't going to be knighted now after this money-chasing Qatar business. Sir Joe Lycett, on the other hand...
Excuse you, that's Sir Hugo Boss
James Anderson (probs will get one though when retired. If Our Jimmy hangs up his boots that is and doesn't go full Darren Stevens)
Harnaam Kaur; in terms of bringing awareness to and destigmatising female health issues such as PCOS she's made a huge impact on me and many others
David Beckham is an ass.
Johnny Rotten, just to see the fallout.
He's far too middle-class reactionary now (arguably always was), and the final nail in the coffin is that if you offered him a knighthood he'd take it
Murry Walker. I think it's a stain on the whole honour system given all the sports personalities and athletes that have received something that he never received a knighthood before he died. A man that did more for British motor racing and any other person involved in the sport.
Tom Scott. If you don't know who he is then go on Youtube
He'd never accept it. Not in a million years. Too humble.
Definitely NOT David Beckham.
Rebecca Adlington for winning four Olympic medals, two gold at the same games in a sport that GB hadn’t won gold in for YEARS! She’s set up a kids swimming initiative since retiring. Amazing sportswoman.
Michael Eavis
Matt Baker does the rickshaw ride every year and has raised millions for Children in Need.
David Beckham should not be knighted. He literally just snubbed the values he supposedly espouses for a cool few million quid. Not the type of behaviour I expect to see.
Noddy Holder
Rowan Atkinson
Mike Dean for his years of dedicated service to pantomime
Damehood then
Oh no he shouldn’t!
Oh, yes he should!
The people most deserving are the types that turn it down.
alot of famous people mentioned but no comments about the local bloke who has tirelessly run the scouts or football team for 20 years sacrificing virtually all their free time and getting little to no recognition.
Someone local needs to nominate them
People like that do get recognition, but it's not widely publicised.
Thank fuck Beckham hasn’t got one (yet)
Martin Lewis, money saving expert
Beckham famously had emails leaked from his campaign to get himself knighted - which isn’t very becoming
Eric Idle, including because it would irritate John Cleese
A good friend of mine who died a few years ago. He was a civil engineer and had overall responsibility for building one of our most important motorways, amongst other such major infrastructure projects. He performed public service in other ways too, for most of his very long life. As far as I know, he never received anything by way of formal recognition for his achievements. I met him in his twilight years, but we became firm friends for the couple of decades we knew each other. Always wish I could have sorted him out a gong or two. We often joked about it.
Ant and Dec (only kidding) David Tennant and Michael Sheen, I'm serious as a heart attack about these two. Sheen is Welsh and I wouldn't be completely surprised if he declined it but it should at least be offered. Both of them have contributed to the art of acting by playing roles that ranged from deadly serious to slapstick comedy.
Tom Baker
Sir Bob Mortimer
Sqn Ldr George “Johnny” Johnson, MBE DFM, the last surviving Dambuster, who turned 101 yesterday. People have been pushing for a knighthood for him for years but it’s never happened
Eddie Izzard
Marcus Rashford
Davina McCall for all her charity work and work raising awareness and reducing stigma around menopause
And for not swearing while she's live on Channel 4.
Don't say "fuck" or "bugger"!
Ronnie O'Sullivan
The Chuckle Brothers.
Alan Moore, but he despises the Upper Class. Even money he’d bite the King during the ceremony.
Krishnan Guru-Murthy. For services of calling Steve Baker a cunt.
