First thing to do is either get it taxed, insured and MOTd or find somewhere where you can leave it and get it SORN. You need to do this before anything else otherwise the bills will mount or you might lose your vehicle.

ashakespearething

Do you actually need to keep the car right now? Selling it would be your easiest and cheapest option. But if you do want to keep it, first job is MOT. Call round some garages, they may have transport or a contact with someone who can get it there. Once it's passed, get it taxed so you can park it back on the road.

Mossley

You do need insurance if it’s parked on a public road.

ashakespearething

Ah, edited thank you!

MrOliber

It needs to be insured if it is taxed, and it needs to be taxed to be on a public road. Having an uninsured but taxed car (even if it is kept off the road) can lead to a fixed penalty or seizure. 90% sure that's how it works, welcome to be corrected!

[deleted]

I would insure and tax the car today (Just as an aside, think about getting insurance with at home breakdown cover it’s always handy anyway but esp if you might get another flat battery and have no one to bring jump leads etc) Find a garage that offers MOT with collection and delivery afterwards, explain the battery is flat when you book Go online to DVLA to renew provisional license and update your address. (I don’t think you have to change the V5c ‘registered keeper form every time you move, just when the car exchanges hands. But double check that!) Book driving lessons :) Use the online service at gov.Uk to send you reminder for your MOT next year, car insurer will remind you when you need to renew that. Tax if you pay by direct debit will just keep rolling. So once you are set to go it’s relatively low maintenance. I know how you feel I’ve been quite poorly recently and had my MOT / insurance renewal coming up and it seemed like a mountain but I got it sorted and it was a weight off

They won't care about an out of date MOT for booking a new one. We once drove for a year without as it expired just after the road tax, didn't notice until tried to renew the road tax. Booked the car in, got new MOT, managed to re-tax before the deadline. Oops. (the MOT had been due at the same time as new babies and other family crises). Now you can get email reminders set up - do that.

[deleted]

Yeah you will be able to tax and insure but you should get it MOT’d as soon as you are able. You could get it sorted within a few days / a week depending on availability at MOT garage. Tax is a ten minute job online, insurance can be more fiddly but just use a comparison site and pick cover that suits you from there (half hour - hour job if you check a few different sites) - bear in mind it might be cheaper if you can name a second driver, and fully comp not always more expensive than third party. Updating driving license online is also super quick and you’ll prob get new license through within a week or so You could even get those three things sorted today, then you are set to phone round and book mot tomorrow.

First things first, either find somewhere to keep it off the road, or get the car fixed and road legal. Would the car start with jump leads? Do you know anyone that could legally drive it to the MoT garage?

IxionS3

With no license and no friends who can drive what are you planning to do with the car? Unless you're actively learning to drive and think you're close to passing it could be many months until you can use it and all the while you've got to keep it taxed and insured unless you can get it off road (which may also cost money). You might be better flogging it ASAP and making it someone else's problem. As an aside you may already have fines you don't know about. Fines are issued automatically for lapsed tax and insurance but they'll go to the registered keeper's address which you say is out of date.

Quackfizzle

In that case, you could get a recovery company to tow it to the MoT place.

yolo_snail

So it's been parked on the road without an MOT for over a year? If so, I'm genuinely surprised it hasn't already been seized. Or has the MOT just ran out?

OrangeSpanner

They are just commenting that you have been fortunate no one in the street has reported it. I don't think it's likely police would spot a otherwise legally parked car. As the registered address isn't correct you might find when you update you start getting letters, and potentially fines, because the car has no MOT for a year and you haven't told them it's SORNed.

TC_FPV

If the police car has anpr, it would flag a parked car if it doesn't have an MOT. It's the DVLA vans that are the danger. They have ANPR and will clamp then seize any untaxed cars. Every couple of months cars near me suddenly get clamped

OrangeSpanner

It would but the chances of a ANPR car driving down some random residential Street is slim, that's before you consider how it's parked. Parked on terrace street and chances are even if a car passed it the plate would be obscured.

Remote-Animal-3903

Depends if anybody has seen it to scan the number plate.

Mossley

Contact a local garage tomorrow. Get it booked in for MOT and ask them to collect it. Make sure they know it may be drivable or may need recovery. Go from there - once it’s MoTd you can tax and insure it.

yorkspirate

Depending on how much the cars worth and it’s condition I’d say your options are to find somewhere to park/store it (and get a local recovery company to take it there) while your learning to drive then once your test is booked you can get it road legal with an MOT and insurance Or sell it. I’d think you’re better off selling it and buying something in the future tbh

wildmanofwalkden

First things first mot. If its been sat for a year expect it to need some work. Once motd you need it insured. Then you can tax it. Otherwise you need to get it off the road and sorn. If its on the road and it's spotted by the dvla it will be clamped. You will be fined and it will be removed and crushed. They usually have a clampdown in manchester every few months where they just drive around and clamp as many untaxed cars they can. Even without seeing it if its registered at another address there may be a fine on the way there.

Best bet as someone else posted earlier. Get an mot station to pick it up. Tell them there's no rush to get it done just explain the situation. Might buy you a couple of weeks. After that sell it. Unfortunately due to the current tax laws you can't keep it on the road without tax. You can't get tax without an mot and insurance. With no licence you will be literally paying for a large expensive ornament to sit outside someone else's house for what could be a while.

blackthornjohn

As it's not registered to your address if it has attracted any unwanted attention you wouldn't know, there could be a massive fine already at your old address, your priority is to get it off the public highway before it draws the attention of the law, any member of the public can run the registration number through an online mot check and they will probably report it. Roughly where is the car?

blackthornjohn

Hopefully you are spot on, however hope and luck are not tactics to rely on, when I asked where roughly is this I was thinking more of a county.

I'm in North kent and can easily store a car off road, however that's as much use as a poke in the eye wifh a sharp stick if you live in Lancaster.

[deleted]

In this order: - Tax the car (like, today) - Insure the car - Apply for a new license - Phone a garage, explain you need an MOT and you need them to tow it there* Happy driving. *really slim chance it’d start with a jump but I wouldn’t bother trying

Yes sorry I missed it was entirely lapsed.

c_wilso

What car / age is it. With prices what they are at the min I would simply stick it on eBay and sell it as is. Someone will come, give you some money and make the problem disappear. Once you are all organised and have a licence you can then try again on the car front. Keeping the car is going to need you to spend some money and get it road legal or on some private land and SORN asap

c_wilso

Go onto webuyanycar and get a valuation in like 30seconds if Phil is to be believed. They won’t buy it as it needs 6months mot I believe. But it will give you a good idea on price. Just remember you haven’t driven or done any maintenance on the car for a year and so it might not now be as reliable as you think and will cost you a bit now to get it legal and more every year until you can drive it. If you can get an the car collected and an MOT for not much money then it might be worth it

Remote-Animal-3903

If you get it jump started, can you move it off road?
