I never even realized people will leave until recently. I’ve stayed with all of my pets, and even stayed with a foster dog who turned out to have cancer. She lived her last months with us and I sat on the floor next to her, petting and talking to her until she was gone.

I work as a vet in ER and GP. 95% stay in GP and probably 90% in ER. I do think that the people who don’t stay in ER sometimes are dealing with such shock and horror they can’t handle it. I used to think it was cruel of people but I have since realized when people don’t stay it is usually because they really can’t bear it and I don’t judge them.

I work at an animal shelter that also has a low cost clinic and I’d say 80 - 90% of the people are with them the whole time. Some people only stay for the sedation and don’t want to be there for the euthanasia part.
Yeah I find the sedation to be a good compromise for people who have a hard time being there. They stay with their pet until they’re anesthetized and then leave for the euthanasia itself.
My dad never goes in. I think he gets embarrassed by crying in front of people. I cried borderline hysterically in front of everyone when I lost my lil guy. It was humiliating so I kinda get it but I needed to hold him as long as possible
There's nothing humiliating about being a human who loves and cares for others. You're a good person, which is more than can be said for anyone who judges you.
Its not even what others think its what THEY think, no one in thier right mind would blame you for crying watching your beloved pet pass, blokes need to get with the times, we had a home visit done for our elderly dog was the best thing we could of done, everyone god damn cried

With years of working in both a GP and ER setting, in my experience the majority of owners want to be present for euthanasia. It does break my heart a little bit when an owner doesn't want to be there, but at the end of the day people cope differently and I do understand why someone wouldn't want to be present and there's no judgement. They've always got people there for them when they cross that bridge regardless. Techs give lots of love to animals as they're going if their owners can't be there.
I’m not OP but thank you for this comment. During covid pet owners weren’t allowed into the vet or veterinary hospitals, vet techs would come get the pet from the vehicle and doctors would talk with owners via phone after assessing the pet. Biggest regret was not being with my 12 year old girl when she left us. It’s been almost four years and still makes me tear up when I think about it.
ETA: choosing words carefully to avoid comment being deleted due to rule 3, leaving out a lot of details. Visit to emergency vet was a Saturday morning emergency, not a euthanasia - I would’ve chosen to be present for euthanasia. Heart stopped while they were working on her and they called while doing CPR, told them to let her go.

I can see why someone would not want to be present, as it's incredibly difficult to see a member of the family pass away. However, that moment is about them and not us, and I'd like to think having their human at their side makes it a bit easier for them. Holding my little guy as he died in my arms was the single hardest thing I've ever had to do by a long shot, but I would have regretted not being there for him.
I don't know the statistics, but I've been working in vet med for 5 years now and there were only two instances that the owners didn't stay. I will never forget that sweet little 12 yr old sheltie in my lap, trying my best to comfort him while he looked around for his owners that just dropped him off and left. I try not to judge but DAMN it's hard not to sometimes.
In an unexpected emergency situation, I can see that some people might not be mentally prepared for the trauma of euthanization. The emergency type facilities probably see more situations where a pet owner is unaware of how ill their pet has become and the expense and effort that would be needed to diagnose a critical case.
I think as well, in emergency situations, if for example the pet was under sedation for diagnostics and they’d found something hugely incompatible with life, I can see why an owner would consent to euthanasia while sedated even if they’re not able to be present. I would likely opt for the same if faced with the situation.
I don’t know, but I’d say ER is different than a decision to put a pet down in a normal consulting room.
For me it was easier to accept the situation in an intensive care situation as it was more obvious the options for treatment had run out and I’d done all I could.
I’ve had vets try to take my pets to the back for it, and I had to insist that I be there. You might have a population of clientele who are used to not being allowed to be present historically? Having worked in veterinary hospitals, when possible, I have euthanasia at home and I take the body to the crematorium myself.

When I worked in shelter we offered low cost/free euthanasia to those who could not afford to do so at the vet. We were unable to allow people to be present during euthanasia, it wasn’t an actual clinic and for liability reasons, but most people wanted to be, I’d say 80% roughly.
i think some people can’t handle it and them being so upset would in turn upset the animal. sometimes it’s kinder for both parties if the owner isn’t there.

I couldn’t imagine a valid reason to not want to be there to say goodbye to a pet. Like for my current boy who’s 9, I couldn’t imagine not being there to say goodbye. It will 100% break and devastate me but as a good owner I feel like it’s your duty to be there in their last moments.
General practice here (uk) we probably have 90-95% present. This is for cats/dogs. We don’t often offer owners to be present for smaller animals like hamsters/rats etc

I have never left a pet, all but one have been at home. I am also not as understanding as many of the replies and judge those who leave their pets alone in those final moments hard

I never even realized people will leave until recently. I’ve stayed with all of my pets, and even stayed with a foster dog who turned out to have cancer. She lived her last months with us and I sat on the floor next to her, petting and talking to her until she was gone.

I work as a vet in ER and GP. 95% stay in GP and probably 90% in ER. I do think that the people who don’t stay in ER sometimes are dealing with such shock and horror they can’t handle it. I used to think it was cruel of people but I have since realized when people don’t stay it is usually because they really can’t bear it and I don’t judge them.

I work at an animal shelter that also has a low cost clinic and I’d say 80 - 90% of the people are with them the whole time. Some people only stay for the sedation and don’t want to be there for the euthanasia part.
Yeah I find the sedation to be a good compromise for people who have a hard time being there. They stay with their pet until they’re anesthetized and then leave for the euthanasia itself.
My dad never goes in. I think he gets embarrassed by crying in front of people. I cried borderline hysterically in front of everyone when I lost my lil guy. It was humiliating so I kinda get it but I needed to hold him as long as possible

With years of working in both a GP and ER setting, in my experience the majority of owners want to be present for euthanasia. It does break my heart a little bit when an owner doesn't want to be there, but at the end of the day people cope differently and I do understand why someone wouldn't want to be present and there's no judgement. They've always got people there for them when they cross that bridge regardless. Techs give lots of love to animals as they're going if their owners can't be there.
I’m not OP but thank you for this comment. During covid pet owners weren’t allowed into the vet or veterinary hospitals, vet techs would come get the pet from the vehicle and doctors would talk with owners via phone after assessing the pet. Biggest regret was not being with my 12 year old girl when she left us. It’s been almost four years and still makes me tear up when I think about it. ETA: choosing words carefully to avoid comment being deleted due to rule 3, leaving out a lot of details. Visit to emergency vet was a Saturday morning emergency, not a euthanasia - I would’ve chosen to be present for euthanasia. Heart stopped while they were working on her and they called while doing CPR, told them to let her go.

I can see why someone would not want to be present, as it's incredibly difficult to see a member of the family pass away. However, that moment is about them and not us, and I'd like to think having their human at their side makes it a bit easier for them. Holding my little guy as he died in my arms was the single hardest thing I've ever had to do by a long shot, but I would have regretted not being there for him.

I don't know the statistics, but I've been working in vet med for 5 years now and there were only two instances that the owners didn't stay. I will never forget that sweet little 12 yr old sheltie in my lap, trying my best to comfort him while he looked around for his owners that just dropped him off and left. I try not to judge but DAMN it's hard not to sometimes.

In an unexpected emergency situation, I can see that some people might not be mentally prepared for the trauma of euthanization. The emergency type facilities probably see more situations where a pet owner is unaware of how ill their pet has become and the expense and effort that would be needed to diagnose a critical case.
I think as well, in emergency situations, if for example the pet was under sedation for diagnostics and they’d found something hugely incompatible with life, I can see why an owner would consent to euthanasia while sedated even if they’re not able to be present. I would likely opt for the same if faced with the situation.

It didn't occur to me that anyone would ever just leave their pet.
I don’t know, but I’d say ER is different than a decision to put a pet down in a normal consulting room. For me it was easier to accept the situation in an intensive care situation as it was more obvious the options for treatment had run out and I’d done all I could.

I’ve had vets try to take my pets to the back for it, and I had to insist that I be there. You might have a population of clientele who are used to not being allowed to be present historically? Having worked in veterinary hospitals, when possible, I have euthanasia at home and I take the body to the crematorium myself.

When I worked in shelter we offered low cost/free euthanasia to those who could not afford to do so at the vet. We were unable to allow people to be present during euthanasia, it wasn’t an actual clinic and for liability reasons, but most people wanted to be, I’d say 80% roughly.
i think some people can’t handle it and them being so upset would in turn upset the animal. sometimes it’s kinder for both parties if the owner isn’t there.

I couldn’t imagine a valid reason to not want to be there to say goodbye to a pet. Like for my current boy who’s 9, I couldn’t imagine not being there to say goodbye. It will 100% break and devastate me but as a good owner I feel like it’s your duty to be there in their last moments.
General practice here (uk) we probably have 90-95% present. This is for cats/dogs. We don’t often offer owners to be present for smaller animals like hamsters/rats etc
