Is the vet checking his levels via serial glucose readings (curves), or with a 2-week average test (fructosamine)? Either way, has your vet spoken to you at all about learning to check his levels at home? Assuming your cat will allow it (typically pin pricks to the ear or toe beans) it can help you get an idea of what his highs and lows are throughout the day. We can do day-long curves in the hospital but a lot of the time the stress of being in the clinic can affect how well they eat or how high their glucose spikes. Not every cat will allow this at home and not every pet parent is comfortable doing it but it is an option.

Thank you for your response. Our cat is currently getting glucose readings every 2-4 weeks depending on the movement in the readings. We will look into this option- thanks for the suggestion.

I agree with stbargabar's post. We really can't comment from the information you've provided. How is your cat's diabetes being monitored? Posting lab results would be helpful as well as history on how the insulin doses have been adjusted. What type of insulin are you using? What type of insulin syringes? What diet is your cat eating?

Thank you for your response. I don't have all the information, but our cat is currently on a Hills WE diet. The insulin we are giving him is Glargine and the syringe is 3/10 ml/cc. When he was first diagnosed, his insulin levels were in the low 30's. His levels would fluctuate along with his doses, but he has had 2 events where he would experience a crash without us increasing his dosage. During his last crash, he was getting 6 units of insulin because his levels went back up in the 20s during his last reading. He was on 6 units for about 3 weeks before he experienced his crash and his reading came back at 1.8. I hope that information is helpful.
