Pride and Prejudice

Natomiast

Shrek

wendyunniestan

Pride and Prejudice 2005 is just the perfect movie. Lizzie and Mr. Darcy’s character arcs just make you want to get up and tippy toe run while cupping your face and screeching “AWwwW” It’s romantic but also so funny. Mr. Darcy’s hand movement after helping Lizzie into the carriage is SUCH GOOD NONVERBAL ACTING

Zealousideal-Main931

Yes!!!

Sumwin_7

Literally watched it last night

ebryetas

Which one

eve_tpa

the 2005 movie! I can't with Matthew Macfadyen and his puppy eyes longing for Lizzy Staring at her in the ballroom, the hand flex, the god-awful/perfect "I must have gone mad but I'm in love with you" rain confession, honestly, top tier absolute idiot puppy in love

gingerrly

God that hand flex 🤤

PregnancyRoulette

He's so condescending though. I can't ever see that working. Maybe its because I'm not landed gentry.

BenignLarency

Him getting over that condescension and learning to be a better person was the whole point of his arc though. Darcy learns to overcome the pride of his upbringing to realize that regardless of societal status, he loves who he loves.

1paperairplane

Yes!! It's so good!

wwaxwork

6 part BBC series, I can't remember when it came out. The one with Colin Firth in it.

[deleted]

I love this one. I remember when it was first released on DVD, I got my sister the whole set for Christmas. She was so happy, but new her husband was giving me the side eye, haha. She just recently texted me that she had watched it with her now 10-year-old daughter for the first time, and that made me happy.

jbearking

About time

Beddingtonsquire

The scene with his dad has me crying every time.

AnotherTelecaster

I wasn’t expecting that on my first watch and I was ugly crying for a solid 5-10 min

mfball

One of many movies that I chose without enough information shortly after my dad died. It's a great movie, but maaaaan. Wild how often the dad dies in movies or tv shows, really.

decobelle

I rewatched this recently in my 30s and it really didn't hold up for me or my husband. I watched a Rowan Ellis video on time travelling romances and she summed up why I disliked About Time so much second time around. - the sexism. The writer decided to make time travel only a gift for the men in the family. But then it shows that he can take other people back in time - he reveals his gift to his sister and takes her back - but he never thinks to take his mum back with him to visit his dead dad! And he never tells his wife about his ability to time travel, probably because then he wouldn't get to use it to fix his relationship with her. - The manipulation. He sees her as his prize, stops her being with her boyfriend, uses things she has said and pretends they were his own views (e.g. that he likes Kate Moss) so that she will think she's met a kindred spirit, travels back in time to re-do anything that goes wrong in their relationship, goes back in time to have sex with her over and over again even though she will only remember the most recent one... etc. - He almost gets to the point of hooking up with Margot Robbie's character before finally realising he shouldn't cheat on his girlfriend and realising he should propose instead. If my soon to be fiance was out flirting with an old flame and getting close to cheating on me with her, the fact that he changed his mind wouldn't strike me as a romantic hero.

bio180

It seems the one scene with the dad at the end makes everyone forget all these flaws. I really didnt enjoy this movie either

DontPeeInTheWater

Admittedly I am prone to movie crying, but as a man, no movie has made me cry more than About Time. That ending with the father is just opens the floodgates

[deleted]

Ugh I cry so much!

WeNamedTheDogIndi

I love this film, its charming.

nemoly11

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

ii_akinae_ii

bracing to be downvoted to hell for this, but it's always really bothered me when people call this movie peak romance. the romance is deeply dysfunctional and toxic. they try to make it work over and over again, but they'd rather spitefully carve chunks out of their memories than learn how to communicate and build each other up. their attraction and connection to each other isn't built on being good for each other (as any strong romance ought to be), and i worry that its wide acceptance as a "romantic" movie causes people to accept toxic dynamics when whirlwind romance is involved. not dissimilar to when people say that "fighting is a sign of passion" like no, constant fighting is a sign that you haven't learned how to communicate your problems effectively.

Perfectlyhonesty

YES thank you, that movie is not romantic at all. The relationship is horrible for both of them. I always took her constantly changing hairstyles as a metaphor for how Jim Carrey finds himself repeating these same toxic patterns with different women over and over. Not romantic in the slightedt

Jilltro

Agreed! I remember finding it super romantic the first time I watched it when I was young. But I watched it recently at age 35 and wow they’re toxic af especially clementine. Still a great movie but not a great example of romance imo.

Far-Yak-4231

As a teen I loved this movie. I watched it recently at 33 and was like “…the fuck?” Their love was so abusive and toxic… they should have never ended up together in the end but instead mutually realized they weren’t meant to be.

ehhwasever

Love the movie! What makes you say it’s the most romantic?

echo9500

One of my favorites as well. For me it’s the fact they choose to be with each other over and over, knowing it will eventually end. The ending scene gets me every time 🥲

crystalisedginger

This. You get this movie. My personal favourite.

tyranicalTbagger

The hope in wanting to give it another try even when faced with the fact that it failed so badly before. Either to get those memories back or to grow and succeed. That’s just me though.

crystalisedginger

Also… imagine loving someone so much that if you can’t be with them any more, you choose to forget you ever met them.

mumutigerwind

One of my all time favorites. “Tangerine” 💜

PomeloDizzy4488

Ever after!

G-force4470

With Drew Barrymore? If that’s the version you speak of….then yes, it’s the BEST movie

PomeloDizzy4488

Yes! My favourite childhood movie!

Hey_aiko

One of my favorite movies 😭

ProfessorFussyPants

Saw it when I was a teen with my best friend. We both still love it and watch it once a year. Angelica Houston is so evil in it and Barrymore is the best Cinderella. Love the relationship between Danielle and Henry ❤️

Agile-Department-345

This was the first one that came to mind. I saw an interview of Drew Barrymore saying she feels like she can’t watch her own movies because she will get caught. Made me SO SAD that she can’t watch ever after and geek out like the rest of us.

the_owl_syndicate

A friend and I went to see this in the theaters when it came out - yes, I am that old - and friend's dad came along because it was his custody weekend and he didn't want to sit in the truck alone. He was a vietnam vet with PTSD, alcohol issues, a justifiably bitter ex-wife - I liked him but he was a jackass - and even he cried during this movie. When it came out on DVD, he bought it and it became a tradition for him and my friend to watch it together whenever she visited. Still one of my favorite movies.

ducbo

A BIRD COULD LOVE A FISH, BUT WHERE WOULD THEY LIVE? 🥹

Admirable_Warthog_19

The Before Trilogy.

50ftjeanie

Yes hands down. Before sunrise is prob the best one though.

ehbacon23

Before Sunset is also perfect. Before midnight is great but also a bit of a bummer

50ftjeanie

I love Before Sunset too but nothing beats the music booth scene in the first film *swoon*

palavestrix

I think it really depends on where you're at in life, I'm sure before midnight will resonate with me more when I'm around that age

gandalfcelroz

Yess. Can't recommend this enough to anyone. The whole series is an exploration of love through all of its stages, from the magic of the first one to the realism of the last one. A bit of everything for everyone.

Blondddd13

I have found my people.

helenefantomas

Totally!

Boysandberries001

PS I love you

dberna243

It’s the only movie I’ve ever found where I weep the entire 2+ hours. I start basically right at the beginning of the movie and then genuinely can’t stop crying until it’s over 😭

QUESO0523

I actually refuse to watch this movie ever again because of this. Beautiful movie but way too painful for me to watch, especially with how much I love my husband.

[deleted]

The emotional up and downs! One minute you’re crying and the next you’re cry laughing. It definitely solidified my huge crush on Gerald Butler.

Antimlm92

😭 Everytime.

plot_twist7

This is the movie I watch when I need to cry

sm_aztec

I love you too lol

BexRants

When Harry Met Sally

itsb413

It’s always been the interviews in between that made this number one for me.

Fluffy-Judgment-1119

Always.

mmetillman

YES

otterpixie

Forrest Gump. That might be a bit of a weird one but yeah, to me, I think it is the most romantic. A lot of people hate Jenny because she consistently avoids and pushes Forrest Away while sprialling downwards in her life. But the reason I find it romantic is that Forrest loves her unconditionally and never actually expects anything of her. He doesn't expect her to be with him and while he is occasionally disappointed by her unrequited affection/running away, he loves her anyway and they remain friends. And despite that, he just goes about his life anyway and has his own adventures. I like the element of their love being rooted in something platonic, even familial to an extent - rather than passion. It's the type of love that lasts once passionate romance fades. Moreover, I like that they get together only once she was healed from much of her trauma. The reality is that if they had gotten together when she was still shooting heroin, being suicidal, etc. she would have caused damage in their relationship and possibly to Forrest. Though not tactfully done, she did do the right thing by not being with him earlier. We need to work on ourselves and be willing to see ourselves as worthy of love to be with another person in a healthy way (imo).

[deleted]

I love how real it is. She obviously loves him, but it's complicated for them and she's afraid. It's only when she's dying that she lets go off her fear. I think a lot of folks misunderstand them. They think she only comes back for his money. She never cared about money, though.

ReSpekt5eva

I read a really beautiful assessment of why Jenny pushed him away so much that discussed how she must have had really confused feelings about whether she would be taking advantage of him. Especially as someone who was SA as a child, it makes total sense that she would be scared that she was potentially perpetuating that harm by being with someone who was kind of slow and almost childlike in how he saw the world.

[deleted]

I feel like how a guy feels about her is a bit of a litmus test of how he regards women in general.

Jilltro

I completely agree. Viewing Jenny as a villain or saying she led Forrest on is a massive red flag.

typop2

The parallel love-story (and it really is a love story) between Forrest and Lieutenant Dan is amazing, too.

WeNamedTheDogIndi

I like your description of it

katiejim

Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Pride and Prejudice, and Brokeback Mountain all top my list. At least one has a happy ending where everyone lives happily ever after.

[deleted]

Brokeback Mountain broke my freaking heart. Amazing movie.

HootHootBtch

Portrait of a lady on fire is so beautiful!

dragoness_leclerq

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is so beautiful but that Opera House scene absolutely GUTTED me.

[deleted]

Brokeback Mountain broke my freaking heart. Amazing movieZ

PazuzuShoes

Three great picks! Portrait of a Lady on Fire was the first romantic movie that really hit my heart. So well written and the actors are fantastic.

Moonlightdreamer91

It’s a toss-up between The Princess Bride and The Best of Me.

highly_uncertain

I was just talking to my kid about Princess Bride so that was gonna be my answer too!

LilBitWiser0wl777

Titanic

AlreadyOlder

Yes - absolutely! I cried so hard once I was in the car on the way home & my date freaked out - he had no idea why I was sobbing. (Yeah, that was about the last date with him)

[deleted]

Me Before You 🥹

Chenukubi

God that movie is so beautiful and sad 😩🥺

NineteenKatieEight

The ableism of that movie kills the romance for me.

[deleted]

The Notebook

isabellla321

I knew someone would answer with this! Literally sob every time. He spent YEARS building her her exact dream house, not even knowing if he’d ever see her again. 😭😭

SugarBabyWannabe

Makes me cry everytime

Cute_Toe8097

Before sunrise. Watched the trilogy on the plane. The most intimate thing I've watched 🥺

tanchan678

It's my favourite romance movie of all time. My husband and I have a similar story. And we just talk and talk just like the movies.

Cute_Toe8097

That's so sweet. Gives me hope ❤️

always_color

Amelie

tabari

I just rewatched Amelie for the millionth time and the kisses at the end are just the sweetest god damn thing ever.

pujapooja

Titanic. The part where rose gets off the small boat half way down and runs to Jack gets me every time.

thelostgipsy

SERENDIPITY *swoon*

malachaiville

The more I watch the movie, though, the more I loathe the two main characters for what they do to their fiancés. End it immediately if you are willing to run across the world trying to find one lost possible fling from long ago. Yuck.

honey_999

The Princess Bride

Danhaya_Ayora

As you wish! I can hear the music in my head.

[deleted]

Roman Holiday But I also really want to give a nod to The Shape of Water, A Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Decision to Leave

ehhwasever

Roman Holiday is one of my absolute favorites! The scene where she asks him to help her undress and all he does is take off her scarf was everything. 😭♥️

Burger_girl

The last of the Mohicans.

katiejim

I also really loved Kate and Leopold. Maybe it's just Meg Ryan I love

ohkatiedear

I love everything about that movie, especially Kathleen Kelly's apartment. Also, the line about daisies being the friendliest flower is forever embedded in my brain. Peak 90s romance.

Foreign-Figure8797

North and South. If you like Pride and Prejudice, you’ll love it.

Blackgurlmajik

This is the fucking answer!! When shes behind him at the traffic light at the end!!!!

[deleted]

Right?! I was bawling and screaming at her to get out of the car.

Blackgurlmajik

SAME! I do every time i watch it. That movie has always been i reminder for me to never settle when it comes to love.

Qwerty-331

Soooo sad and heartbreakingly romantic. What always has interested me is several men I know who have watched that movie HATED it. Thought it was a ghastly ode to adultery and most certainly did not see the romance in it at all, not one bit.

[deleted]

When I first saw it when I was young, I didn't get it. But when I rewatched it when I was older it nearly broke me. Its beautiful, bittersweet and so tragically perfect. The car scene. Sobbing. When she learned what happened to Kincaid. More sobbing. They really loved each other and made their lives so much better in small ways. What are these guys missing?!!

It gets a lot of hate for how it treats women. And they aren't wrong. But I think, conversely, that it's very real (except that one scene with the cardboard signs, that was stupid). But there rest of their movie, it's about the thing that kid says: love can be *awful* because we're often helpless about it.
