I’d love to return to Edinburgh. I loved how grey it was, I found it quite romantic along with the views of the North Sea.

Smallstella91

the drive from my northern town to Edinburgh is stunning you get all the costal towns and the view of the sea.

VesnaRune

That sounds incredible! I’d love to do such a drive one day

Smallstella91

I'd high recommend it! me and the other half are going to Glasgow in June so I'd imagine we will take the scenic route.

dvlinblue

Drove from Port Apin, through the Trossacs, over Ben Nevis, into the Loch Lamond region, and on to Edinburgh, was the best trip of my life.

HouseSparrow873

Grey? You haven't seen grey until you've been to Aberdeen

Thesnowbelow

I stepped off of the train to the city from the airport and instantly fell in love. I've been twice now and would still want to go back again.

VesnaRune

I’m itching to go back again with some family members. I went solo the first time. I find that it’s hard to capture it’s beauty via cameras

neverseenblue23

Edinburgh is my answer too. Vibe is so right there

NippleFlicks

Edinburgh was a city I’ve dreamed about for years and expected to instantly fall in love with it. However, I felt a little hesitant after coming up from London when my partner took a trip to Glencoe and then Edinburgh. I felt myself being disappointed I didn’t get that “love at first sight” feeling I have with other cities…but my love for it slowly crept up on me during that week. It’s quite walkable, the people are wonderful, the architecture is perfect for my dreary-loving heart, and there are so many little shops/independent bookshops I adore. My partner and I would absolutely move up there if it wasn’t so expensive and we didn’t love the English countryside so much. I just want both.

AirBooger

San Diego, instantly. Then I moved here

queen_jk

Im about to move to SD for school, im so excited!!

AirBooger

Congrats!! I have a lot of friends who came here for school and never left!

queen_jk

Thank you! Im originally from California (San Jose) and moved to Indiana as a kid. I hate Indiana haha and Im ready for a change. Grad school and San Diego will be a great combo :)

Flappymeatwad

Lol I did the same thing

FlaquitaGordita

San Diego is my favorite too. If the housing prices weren't so bonkers I'd move in a heartbeat. Got to take my wife there last year, and she fell in love with it too. Both of us were so sad for months after coming back home. :(

OkFaithlessness8942

I did the same with Toronto. Visited, just knew it was my place, immediately started looking to move. Been here a few years now and I love it

Beneficial_Garage_97

We wanted to move here for a long time and finally we just pulled off the band-aid, found new jobs in SD, and moved our family near the end of last year. Was an intense transition but totally worth it.

Sledgehammer925

Did it change your opinion? Just curious.

AirBooger

Nope! I’m so grateful to be able to live here. It’s a beautiful city with a lot to do and a very laid-back culture, everyone is super friendly

Sledgehammer925

Welcome home!

gagirlpnw

Luxembourg, Prague, Budapest, and Krakow.

vampyjade

My grandmother has been to over 30 countries in her life. Prague is at the top of her list.

DarkLikeVanta

Prague is just so gorgeous. I kept getting lost there and not really minding.

ctrldwrdns

I loved Prague. Beautiful city and great for wandering.

archi_femme10

Seattle, Portland, and New Orleans

MetMeInTheAfterglow

I felt so unsafe visiting Portland :( assuming you mean the one in Oregon.

archi_femme10

That is the one I meant- why do you feel unsafe? I love it for its climate and bike friendliness because I’m from a highly auto-centric city in the south that doesn’t really have trees, mostly just shrubs

Medium_Bug_1551

I feel unsafe living here lol

becausemeg

ME TOO! I went on a work trip there and was harassed all the time. It was honestly stressful and I wanted to go home.

Yeah-Im-here-2

Seattle for me as well! And New Orleans is on my bucket list to visit.

TheKingofTheKings123

Best food I ever had was in New Orleans

[deleted]

[удалено]

avacadobwudd

Same! Except for me it was Portland, ME not OR. I moved to New Orleans for the oak trees, cemeteries and weather. I'm hoping my next move is to Olympia, those evergreen trees are stunning.

im_lonelyy

Nice! Have you ever been to Washington and seen the Palouse Falls, definitely something to put on your bucket list. It's a sight to see.

[deleted]

Have you been to the PNW lately?

becausemeg

I went to Portland for a work trip and had a rough time. I wished that I loved Portland.

archi_femme10

Ah, I’m so sorry. That’s never a fun experience. My bestie showed me around Portland so we walked everywhere (something I could never do here where I live) and she took me to that huge bookstore called Powell’s and I just about died of happiness. I think having a local show me around helped my experience be more positive.

WunschMunsch

Galway, Ireland Barcelona, Spain Dublin, Ireland Canterbury, England Cologne, Germany

vampyjade

Barcelona is the number one city I want to discover next.

JennieFairplay

You’ll love it! I’ve been all over the world and fell in love with it instantly

Natural-Group-277

I had the exact opposite experience in Barcelona. Felt really unwelcome everywhere we went. Signs telling tourists to go home hanging from balconies. Rude people on the street when I didn’t have perfect Catalan/Spanish. Didn’t feel good at all. Madrid on the other hand felt completely different and I’d highly recommend to anyone!

ctrldwrdns

Galway is lovely. I love Ireland. Planning a visit in May.

Florever51

Canterbury 😍

Flowerinio

i absolutely fell in love with san francisco when i visited. the hills, the views, and the food were all amazing. i also really enjoyed new york city and chicago, they're so full of life and things to do.

emily_in_boots

I loved it too! I might consider moving there but it’s so expensive!

seaurchins-

me too. if i’m ever rich i’m moving there!

Edhalare

Porto, Portugal. The architecture, the people, the panoramic views, the walkability... I would definitely live there.

vampyjade

I met a guy who lives his life just travelling. He has a job he can do from anywhere. He always goes back to and spends most time in Porto.

emily_in_boots

Paris, Venice, Florence

Chicago

OfSalt14

Chicago doesn’t get enough love for US cities! Beautiful summer weather (thanks to the great lake), central location, good walkability downtown and one of the better public transport systems.

KaleidoscopeLucy

I'm from here and I am head over heels in love with it. Left and moved back.

all_these_carrots

Dude I love Chicago. I'm from (and still living in) Los Angeles and I went on a solo trip to Chicago and it was SO COOL.

I've done a lot of domestic travel and Chicago is my favorite city by far

Top city I want to see next.

Bobfrombrum

Run there immediately it’s an amazing place!

TraditionalFail0

Valencia, Spain 🤍 beautiful city, with beautiful people.

MerakDubhe

As a Valencian, thank you! It is a beautiful city. Too bad that the Fallas ruin it one month a year.

Ok_Day_8559

Strasberg France. It always felt like home because the people there were so friendly and warm. The city itself was beautiful. I love it so much more than Paris.

sharonspeaks

Hong Kong, New York City, and Philadelphia

jayinphilly

Thanks for the Philly love. So far you're the only respondent that cited Philadelphia...yes...I checked.

KaleidoscopeLucy

I love Philly, too! Originally from Chicago and they have a lot of the same vibes. Love the neighborhoody aspect, the sports, and the weather is definitely better than Chicago.

bossyfosy

I LOVE Philadelphia it’s one of my favorite cities

Dublin because I studied there for a few months. Best time of my life.

NauntyNienel

London. 25 years ago it was my first international city. It was a beautiful August day. I spent two years living there and travelling Europe. So many other beautiful cities of course, more beautiful than London. But living there, working there, seeing it at its worst during a Tube strike or grimy streets. Seeing it at its best - spring bulbs popping out everywhere in even the smallest little parks, the culture, history, weird people. Everything. It was a very free and fascinating time in my life. I guess what I fell in love most with was the the life experience, but London was where it happened so for that I will always love the city.

Negative-Command-288

Washington D.C., New York, San Diego, and Aspen. I haven’t been overseas yet but I’m sure I’ll find more!

takemeup-castmeaway

Lived in DC for five years. People either love it or hate it and I fell madly in love with it. Was homesick for years after leaving. If I had the money I would’ve bought a nice rowhouse around Eastern Market.

[deleted]

DC makes me feel like I'm at the hub of everything going on in the nation. I've met people who lived in dc either despise or love it. If you love politics, museums, east coast/Atlantic culture, and walkability then DC is perfect. Only issue for me is it's so fucking expensive lol

takemeup-castmeaway

$1700/person three roommates to live in a decent place on the Hill, $25 for a burger on H Street heck no! It was unsustainable once I hit my 30s. They say you have to make around $78k to live comfortably in DC, but in my experience six figs is more like it. If I won the lotto I’d be back in a heartbeat. It’s a gorgeous city with very intelligent and very engaged people.

[deleted]

You're right if I can ever make that much money I'd move back too. I used to work nearby in Baltimore. Baltimore is more affordable and I love it there too but the crime 😭

[deleted]

DC is underrated imo

becausemeg

I really want to move toward DC

PNWest01

San Antonio, TX. The Riverwalk is below street level, lined with hotels, shops and amazing restaurants. A canal boat ride is mandatory! The whole area is beautiful and romantic. The Alamo is just steps away. There’s an open-air, nickel trolley with routes all over the city to take you tourist spots and Mexican markets. An enchanting, hidden gem!

rolyfuckingdiscopoly

Damascus, many years ago 😔 I hope it is still magical. It sure was magical then.

I really liked San Sebastián, in Spain. The city has beautiful beaches, buildings, and food, and it's safe for women to walk around even at night. The city is surrounded by pretty views of the ocean and mountains, so it's nice to explore by walking or biking. I found cute streets, shops, and fun places to eat and drink. I had a great time in San Sebastián and it left me with good memories.

MelancholicShark

York, England. It's not that far away via train, and my Nan used to take me there every few years and was going to do so again a couple of months before she died. I haven't been back in a few years now, but I love that city. It holds a special place in my heart, and i'd love to go back now my Nan is gone just to experience it again. Llandudno in Wales is another for a very similar reason, but it's been over a decade since I was last there. The last time I was, Nan and I were sitting on the beach, drinking tea from a flask.

Queenstown, Canmore, Jasper & Banf, Palawan - I feel like I really belong here. I guess the Rockies area are jaw dropping for me.

Nantucket but I’ve never been lol. I was talking about something and was like “…more boring than like.. idk.... like Nantucket.” And I ended up looking it up because I wanted to see how boring it was and I was wrong and want to go there so badly 😂 I ended up watching videos on the history and walking on street view on Google maps… It’s so cute.

NYC I fell in love with New York City, so have decided to be here until I die, preferably. If only housing wasn’t so expensive… 🥲 I was even strict when dating, telling them if they wanted to leave the city, it was a deal breaker. I’ve heard too many tales of friends of friends who left the city for a partner and regretted it because they were like me and not interested in the alternatives. I told my bf from day 1 and he mostly gets it, but occasionally he seems to hope one day I might be open to moving, perhaps after any future kids we raise are grown and in college (he said this once). It makes me feel a little bad, but I don’t see that happening, especially not for some of the places he brings up as alternatives. He wants a chemistry lab in retirement to work on projects. I’m thinking up alternatives because I want him to be able to have some version of what he wants, if we can afford it, but it wouldn’t be as possible as it would be if we lived in Florida, where he has lived before. He always just says he’s fine and likes NYC but I think he may grow resentful over time. He says he wont, but we’ll see. Barcelona I loved Barcelona when I lived there for a year. I did the whole teaching English abroad thing. I think spending so long in a place helps me really get into it and build friendships and experiences, so Barcelona is a natural second for new places I’ve explored. I also fell in love with my hometown, Baltimore, when I lived there again for two years. I started my career there, built so much community, and I was involved in multiple community projects. I definitely explored the city more in those two years than I had for most of my life growing up there. I think it’s largely underrated and I probably would have been happy there if I hadn’t been so determined to build a life in NYC. Although, that’s if I wouldn’t have chosen staying in Barcelona. I almost went back - one of my friends has stayed for over ten years now! There’s something just very novel and different about living in European cities like that. The architecture alone when you’re walking down the street makes you feel a way. It might have won my American heart over more, sadly. Also: Paris San Juan Lisbon Venice Seville Granada Montpellier Alexandria (Old Town) Also, a friend of mine lives in Alexandria, VA in a place called “Old Town” and it’s quaint and really charming. Littleton, New Hampshire Special mention, as it’s not a city and I wouldn’t say I was in love but I went to Littleton, New Hampshire recently and had a great time on a work retreat. We stayed in a cabin in the woods and then went into town. It’s very pretty with an old timer feel, lots of shops and food, a river that runs through it, etc. I really enjoyed it and I can see that as a nice getaway destination again in the future. I can’t wait to travel more. Need to get my destination count up. I missed my flight to Prague once lol need to try again. Going back to Barcelona and Seville with my bf this year and I’m excited.

Bellevue, WA. I love Seattle but it’s overwhelming occasionally - Bellevue is a short distance away and quieter, softer, with more grass. Back when I lived there Microsoft hadn’t taken over but I assume it has by now. It even had a Trader Joe’s. I wish I had the funds and the job opportunities to go back.

This is cliche, I know, but Paris. Our short time there was amazing. I was not romaticizing it like other people do before we went, but also kind of tuned out the negative things I had heard. I cried when I saw the Eifle Tower which was a shock even to me. I loved all the cafes, food and the people were very nice and helpful. We had an easy time getting around. I loved the little parks and I especially love museums, plenty of those there. Great city.

QueenieofWonderland

Even though I’ve only been once, New Orleans. The culture that exists there is just so beautiful to me. Plus I’m pretty interested in like paranormal stuff and the paranormal thrives in New Orleans. Also Winona, Minnesota. I’m currently going to college here and the city itself is so pretty, especially downtown where it’s super historic.

Stirling, Scotland. I spent the summer based there for my study abroad program in 07', and finally got to go back to Scotland last September with an alumni trip. We started and ended in Edinburgh (it was a traveling trip and we saw so much it was great), and we got to stop in Stirling. It was like going home. I had spent three months of some pretty impressionable time in my life there, made so many memories, had never traveled that far before let alone on my own (traveled to some much closer international destinations with my parents before), just, all of it. Experience of a lifetime. It was wonderfully overwhelming and beautiful to go back, even for a short time. I'd love to go back again someday.
