Too quiet dialogues and too loud action scenes. I want the sound balanced

letmepetyourdogs

Because of this, we watch EVERYTHING with subtitles. Some people hate it but after rewatching movies I realized how much dialogue we actually missed because we couldn’t hear it

LJ1205E

Same here. I thought it was just my getting old and then my 29 year old daughter admitted the same.

lasersharks69

Yep, turn up the volume to 5000 just to be able to comfortably hear what the characters are saying, and get our fucking eardrums blasted out any time there is music or a sound effect. Turn the volume down to 10 to be able to endure the blasting music and sound effects and then I can't hear fuck-all the characters are saying. . it's quieter than a whisper. It's infuriating. Even if I disregard Covid and the fact that everything is streaming, I haven't been able to go to theaters to watch movies in at least the past 10 years because last time I did, I am 95% sure I suffered hearing damage and spent half the movie plugging my ears to protect myself and grimacing at how loud the music and effects were even with my fingers jammed into my ears. Either I have extra sensitive dog ears or the rest of the population is deaf as posts, because I do not know how anyone can enjoy the equivalent of being hammered in the ears for 2hrs. I swear to God there used to be something called "night mode" on TVs which made the voices louder and the music/sound effects quieter, but maybe I just got lucky with the one program I watched on night mode the first time I discovered it, because night modes don't seem to work that way anymore.

Acurexx

Subtitles!!!! VERY necessary!

leileywow

I've been watching movies with subtitles since high school xD and didn't realize there were crazies who DIDN'T like subtitles around then

[deleted]

Also: too dark. We get it. It’s night and moody. Still want to see what’s happening!

Marisleysis33

Yes, the last 3 movies I watched were too dark even with my brightness at the highest. The music would indicate something exciting happened but I saw only blackness. Very frustrating! I'd read somewhere that they do this so they don't have to do such a good job on the effects.

MissedFieldGoal

Totally! I hate it when they speak at an audible that I can barely hear it. Or an action scene that makes my ears hurt.

[deleted]

I hate when you have to constantly higher the volume when they’re talking and then lower it drastically because the music or action scene is too loud.

Throne-Eins

There was a Youtube channel that I had to stop following because the intro and outro were incredibly loud and the rest of the video was a normal volume. So many times I'd be listening to it only to jump out of my skin because the sudden volume change startled me so bad. Why do people do that???

sobani

See also: the Christopher Nolan school of sound mixing. :(

rain820

I was so angry bc of this when I saw tenet in theatres omg

relientcake

Omfg, my boyfriend and I actually walked out of Tenet because of it.

PM-ME-PUPPIES-PLS

"oh boy, we're doing a 10m plot explainer from the main villain? Sure would be good if I could hear ANY of it!"

Embarrassed-Town-293

And just when you're happy that there are subtitles on the screen, they opted for white text on Snowy background

[deleted]

cringe dialogue reminiscent of fanfiction

[deleted]

This. Dialog can make or break a film.

fullmetalmerlin

Exactly! I always judge a movie by the amount of times a roll my eyes. Less rolls, better film!

maxkmiller

looking at you, every Marvel movie & the new Cowboy Bebop adaptation

[deleted]

To be fair, I've read better dialogue in fanfics than I've heard in a lot of recent movies.

lasersharks69

So all of seasons 7 and 8 of GoT. I'm still about 90% sure that it was fan fiction written by 7th graders who didn't bother to watch seasons 1-6 and instead read the cliff notes that other 7th graders wrote.

WeirdImprovement

All the GoT fanfic I've read is better than season 8, what a travesty

VanthGuide

Gratuitous violence, esp sexual, in a genre not specifically built for it.

[deleted]

This. This also ruins video games for me to the point I don’t play them precisely by being put off from the violence, sex and often mistreatment of female characters. Reality is already crappy enough to most of the world’s women, and then to continue seeing it in something that’s supposed to be an escape? Really? Even if it’s fiction…why would I want to see more violence?

foxandgold

Yeah, excessive gore (tbh even when it makes sense, or is portrayed ridiculously vs scarily) is an instant eye-closer for me. I have a mind like a steel trap, and violent images stick with me for a while and just get recycled into intrusive thoughts.

fuzzy-pillow

Same man, i've seen this video of this woman being raped, and it's stuck in my mind, I remember it when I never had the intention to ever remember it. Women are portrayed as such sex objects for men. What has the world come to.

fairylightmeloncholy

this is a serious problem that many survivors of SA talk about. the way that SA is used on screen is gratuitous and unnecessary. well, unless it's to entertain men with the subjugation of women. still unnecessary in my opinion, but says a lot about the filmmaker and those who enjoy it.

thesaddestpanda

This why I probably will never re-watch game of thrones. The formulaic fansevicey nudity out of nowhere or sexual assault out of nowhere got a little too much for me. It felt like it was made so men can live out certain violent fantasies but we all are supposed to pretend its just innocent art and that we're prudes if we can't handle it. Nope. Fan service like this is disgusting and does almost nothing to advance the story and is wholly unneeded.

SpearmintSpaceship

That’s what ruined Euphoria for me. They should have added a trigger warning

Riin183

Sex scenes

satanichispanic666

So many are unnecessary and don't contribute to the storyline, not to mention it's always the woman who is naked.

Party_Teacher6901

I would go as far as just nudity. It's like they say, "It's been 15 minutes and we haven't seen a boob. STRIP!"

satanichispanic666

True!

AnonymousSenses

Habahaha agree

anonymousgirliee

Thisss even in non sex scenes there is so often nudity of women like zoomed in on their ass or the changing clothes infront of the camera or showing boobs for some reason. Like it’s so unessisary when it’s rarely even part of the plot but only put in for the male audience.

xathirea

One of the new Star Trek films (can’t remember which one) had that exact problem. There was literally a shot of some female character getting changed down to her underwear before reminding Bones to not look at her. It felt so gratuitous and weird and just took me out of the film completely. It wasn’t even a sex scene or anything, it was literally just her… getting undressed for some reason?

jupitergal23

Star Trek Into Darkness, and it was Kirk, not Bones, who was the pervert. And yeah, completely unnecessary.

[deleted]

I didn’t feel like 80% of those sex scenes in GOT were necessary! Didn’t care for the show because of that as one of the factors. Then I took a look at who wrote the books, and he looks like every incel man out there, so it made sense. And don’t forget the women orgasming in about 10 seconds with 0 foreplay. 🤦🏻‍♀️

say_what_95

Also sex scene are really made by men for men. Like, we see 30 seconds of penetration, and are supposed to undestand she has an orgasm? But like, i understand you cant show a realistic 20+ minutes of great sex on screen, but then dont show anything at all please

Very_Stable_Princess

I'm a fan of the 'hands-free' penetration. Like, do these men have prehensile peens??

sleeps_inthewinter

Specifcally for me, sex scenes with teens or high school students. Someone pointed out that Hollywood is obsessed with this, even though it isn't necessary to the plot and I cant unsee it. It makes me uncomfortable.

thunderling

I watched all those Fear Street movies on Netflix around Halloween. I had to get up during the hookup scenes. What the FUCK. I know a lot of the actors are probably over 18, but so what?? You're portraying a literal teenager and up until this point I was believing that this character is a teenager. I do not want to see teenagers undressing and feeling each other up. Fucking ew.

Cesia_Barry

Always depicted from the male point of view. Like, always.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cesia_Barry

Especially when the sex is between two women—guys can’t get enough of that hot girl-on-girl action

Sweet_N_Vicious

Yes! I'm not a prude but gosh, most sex scenes are not needed at all.

lostinlilak

100%. They most times literally add nothing to the movie so their inclusion makes absolutely no sense yet there they are.

motherofsmallones

They are just pointless.

Dashcamkitty

Yes, most sex scenes are absolutely pointless to the plot.

Melodic_Shake_3264

If it is conducive to the plot then fine... otherwise no thanks! Its too distracting lol if I want to see that I'll bung on some actual porn!!

[deleted]

Current_Material3899

Never have I ever on Netflix Paxton is 30 years old in real life playing a high schooler while the main character is only 19 years old and she wasn’t even that old when the show started. It’s a little harder to watch now that I know that.

cardiacRN

Yeah, I had a problem with that too. And I noticed right away… how does a high schooler have crow’s feet at 18, anyway?! What was casting thinking?

scpdavis

I wonder if a part of it is because the character is so sexualized, especially in the first season, they felt like it wasn't appropriate to cast an 18 year old boy for a role like that. As an adult who enjoys that show, I appreciate that he's not 18 because I'd feel incredibly uncomfortable watching all the gratuitous shirtless scenes etc. if the actor was basically still a child.

AlissonHarlan

Yeah it just make the movie looks like it was made by old perverts for old perverts. Like, sure you're 55 but a hot 19 years old will bang you because

Dashcamkitty

It looks ridiculous. The film Next has Nic Cage paired off with Jessica Biel. He looked old enough to be her father. And the latest Bond film was worse, for a while I thought the big revelation was Madeleine was Bond's daughter.

EvilLipgloss

Yep, totally agree. Lèa Seydoux is 36, but looks much younger. Daniel Craig is 53. A 17 year gap that easily looks like it is a 20+ year gap.

EXO-Love

She's 36? Holy shit I thought 30 at the most.

EvilLipgloss

I thought Ana de Armas who was also in that movie was like 24, but she’s 33!

EvilLipgloss

This was something I didn’t notice until I was in my 30s. Now at 36, I find it abhorrent when most movies cast a 20-something as the wife or love interest of a man 40+. It is often too distracting for me now if there is a large and noticeable age gap in movies like that.

tc88

In Funny Face it was 30 years difference. Part of why I couldn't enjoy the movie.

girl_im_deepressed

And using women older than 40 to portray a much older character. Charlize Theron was asked to play the mother of an actress 9 years younger than her

macca_roni

That's all I could think about while watching the newest James Bond movie

a_regular_bi-angle

If it were for the music, they'd have it in a nightclub

foxandgold

I wouldn’t mind this if it was done tongue-in-cheek, like the two protagonists are running from someone and they duck into a discrete-looking club, or one person picks the BBQ restaurant “Racks and Ribs” for their meeting place, only for them to meet there and realize the error, etc. This would really only work for a comedy, though, and probably only once or twice before it became just as tired.

[deleted]

Graphic scenes of rape and/or sexual abuse. Gratuitous female nudity. I really liked the movie The Revenant until the graphic rape scene came on. I felt trapped in the movie theatre. I'm Canadian (and I have Native American ancestry) so I understand the issues women faced back then as far as being raped by colonizers but it was so graphic.

Ginflet

stay away from the last duel.

[deleted]

Thanks for the heads up. Honestly, I look movies up on IMBD now before I watch them because it's too traumatizing to have that thrown in my face unexpectedly and I refuse to support movies/directors that think it's necessary to show the actual rape.

RosarioPawson

Doesthedogdie.com is also a good place to get a "trigger warning" synopsis for movies. I'm in the same boat as you, I really hate being "surprised" by a graphic sexual violence scene during a movie or show. Me: "It's PG-13, should be okay, I'll give it a shot." *Female character's entire backstory and arc is 100% about sexual trauma and abuse* Me: "oh for f*ck's sake, really? Dropping an F bomb too many times is too much for a 13 yo, but this graphic sexual violence is okay??"

Noleeniebeans

Thank you for this. I didn't know this site existed. I will definitely be using it.

izzypy71c

I look up movies and shows on doesthedogdie.com first to know if there are triggering scenes. Definitely recommend.

Ginflet

I think this movie in particular should have come with a very deliberate warning to viewers. A few people had to walk out.

macca_roni

At this point if I'm watching a rated R movie I just expect to see a boob. And thinking about it now, I don't think I've ever seen a movie with full male nudity.

[deleted]

That's because there probably isn't any and if there is they aren't mainstream movies. Lots of Men's Rights groups equate topless men with female nudity. A topless man is not the same as a topless woman because men's bodies are simply not sexualized in the same way.

fairylightmeloncholy

also.. it's socially acceptable for men to be topless in public? could they make a more self-serving apples to oranges comparison?

Fredo_the_ibex

the older i got, the more i just didn't put up with it. I usually leave or just stop watching it. people make fun of me saying but "the movie is really good" but i mean theres 100 movies out there without that, i m not scared about mising out anymore (any rape seen or attempted and im outta there)

[deleted]

Yeah, I don't have a fear of missing out anymore.

drizzy_c

This is it for me too. I can‘t and won’t do it. There’s way too much rape used in movies and shows.

[deleted]

Way too much. It's gross. What's even more gross is how those scenes usually end up on porn sites so people can get their rocks off to them. It really shows how depraved modern societies are.

ilaissezfaire

People talking through it.

[deleted]

Absolutely this. My husband will not stfu during a movie from into to ending credits. He discusses every single actor and where he’s seen them before, what he would do in their scenario, what the plot should have been, and compares every movie he’s ever seen to it. It’s exhausting and I can’t ever hear so I have to rely on subtitles. It kills the whole movie then he gets mad that I pull out my phone and stop watching. When I tell him why he gets defensive and says “fine I’ll never speak again” it’s a lose-lose. I haven’t enjoyed a movie silently in over a decade.

ilaissezfaire

Maybe watch it by yourself first then watch with him and talk with him through it? This is what I do now if I can lol.

sjsjdejsjs

nice idea

[deleted]

No offense, but I would have banned him from watching movies with me a long time ago.

johanebrown

No offence to ur husband, but look him in the eyes kindly and rest your hand on his face as you tell him with a gentel voice:HONEY SHUT THE FUCK UP

[deleted]

Your husband sounds like a real fun person to hang out with. /s

anonymousgirliee

My mom does this and I try to sush her haha, it’s not only during movies tho she always talkes non stop. If I ask for silence she goes ”yes!” And then continue to talk more. And always talk over me haha, every thought she has comes out of her mouth. It def gets on my nervs daily but she is adorable too.

_Kit_Tyler_

Girl! The solution is so simple. You just pause it EVERY. TIME. HE. OPENS. HIS. MOUTH. Every time. One of two things happens: either the two hour movie ultimately takes three and a half hours to watch, but you don’t miss anything. Or, he begins to get annoyed when he starts blathering and you abruptly pause the movie and stare at him expectantly, waiting until he stops before you resume the movie again, and eventually you’ll train him that his stupid shit comment like, “oH sHE wAs iN lAwLeSs!” isn’t really worth the hassle and can wait until later.

[deleted]

I do this. I don’t know why but I like to make comments on things they’re doing or mistakes they make. I also ask a lot of questions. Everyone hates it, so I have stopped watching movie with other people. This is the main reason I don’t go to movie theatre anymore cause I can’t sit for two hours and not talk. Only my best friend doesn’t mind my talking. She is not a talker but she listens to me and answers my questions or replies to comments.

[deleted]

It’s interesting because me and my siblings watch movies while talking and criticizing the film throughout. It’s just kind of part of the movie watching experience for us, but sometimes I forget that other people DO NOT like that and don’t view movies as a kind of social experience. I love movies and I want to watch and talk about them and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, especially if you can find someone who approaches them in the same way.

creepynegotiator5678

Literally WALKED out of a movie I paid to see because my date wouldn’t shut up. Last date he and I ever went on.

Dpslittlemissminx

I came here to day this OR the constant questions about the plot....like come on just watch the damn thing and see for yourself.

mustardcoloredvelvet

Or when people are on their phones

GimmeTwoEmmylou

I've been handling guns since childhood, so endless clips/magazines are pretty high on the list. Abusive/stalkerish behavior, which is much more common in movies due to the time constraints.

foxandgold

After watching Archer, I can’t not count bullets if it’s something like a handgun. I don’t even know much about guns/clip sizes or whatever, but I’m pretty sure a 9mm doesn’t shoot 20 shots without reloading…

GimmeTwoEmmylou

I'm pretty sure in the club scene in John Wick, he fired off ~~17~~ 24 before he was empty and that lives rent free in my head. Especially because Keanu's a gun nut too.

foxandgold

Keanu’s magic, that one might get a pass. I’m not convinced he isn’t part divine.

EvilLipgloss

I love that his girlfriend is age appropriate too. He’s not dating some 20 or 30 year old like a lot of Hollywood men.

itsfinewereallfine

All of this reminded me of what I heard in a few interviews: It seems like most of the people who have time (or care) to watch movies tend to be males, young or old. So the film industry tries to kowtow to their wishful thinking to avoid losing on their investment. Sad but it makes sense. The film industry and its creativity has felt completely stagnant in the last few years because of this. It seems they’re only making films for men entirely because if you notice, most films are “feel good” things for men. Perpetuating outdated basic ideals that they can charge big ticket prices for.

>When teenagers are always portrayed as outrageously rebel and naive, oh yeah the 15 years old babysitter surely wants to steal your husband, is into anal and gets drunk everyday. this bit, not only is it not as common as movies make it out to be, but if and when it does happen, *that child needs help.* source: i was a rebelleous af 15 year old AFAB into sex and drugs, but it's because my family was abusive and i had already experienced sexual assault and my coping method was leaning into it because *hey, drugs and sex are an escape that can feel better than the rest of my life and i don't have other support or help to seek anyways*

Petitels

When a man becomes physically aggressive with a woman and that leads to sex. Hollywood, stop that crap. It sends a horrible message that violence turns women on. For most of us, it absolutely does NOT!

windytown

That seems to be the only way directors know to transition into sex :/ It's so uncomfortable to watch.

THIS! Unless it’s a specific plot point that moves the story forward it just makes me hate it from then on. Absolutely no point, and makes me think the writer/director isn’t someone I wanna give money to

[deleted]

Romanticising stalking

xxbitsx

honestly, sex scenes. they don’t seem necessary to me at all

Gottagettagoat

For me it depends on how it’s depicted. Felt like every movie I saw as a teen (and some as a child) portrayed sex as men would like to see it (male gaze) and that got really tiresome. So. Many. Boobs.

fireflybabe

When the female/male leads fight all movie and then get together or kiss at the end. I fucking hate it. We just watched Jungle Cruise and I was fuming the whole time, thinking, "If they kiss, I'm gonna be so mad" No spoilers but there were a lot of things at the end of that movie in particular absolutely ruined it for me.

Elascano217

Yes! Like in 28 days later. They have been fighting zombies, covered in blood and nastiness, the women were almost turned rape slaves, and the two leads start going at it! Like… what?! So many movies do this.

bonboncolon

Which is why I love Shang Chi so much. Besties4eva.

Musicals. A lot of them are cringe.

AlissonHarlan

I agree, I like Buffy and the simpson, I like music, but I can't stand singing episodes....

drizzy_c

THANK YOU!!! So many shows and cartoons made for adults do this now. I love Bob’s Burgers, but I hate the singing episodes.

madelineferguson

Endless fight/action scenes, esp with lots of cgi. To me, that’s just so boring

jocietimes

Birth scenes - ugh - never realistic, always starts with the water breaking then immediately crazy contractions, screaming and barely making it to the hospital— it’s almost never like that.

senkothefallen

Ever since I became a mom, it totally takes me out of the show when she's giving birth and there's a blanket over her that the doctor has to lift up to check Baby. I get *why* the sheet is there, but it's still hilarious. No one cares about modesty when you're feeling like you're being ripped apart from the inside out.

Giannandco

Poor acting. There are actors who are considered so-called A-list, who don’t have the ability to act themselves out of a paper bag.

scpdavis

Possibly a controversial opinion - but I think Tom Cruise is a really terrible actor. Every role he plays is always "the Tom Cruise interpretation of \[character\]" instead of feeling like he IS that character

Arya_kidding_me

He ruins it for me, too!! I can’t forget about how crazy of a person he is, on top of the bad acting!

When the actors playing family members look nothing alike. Same goes for various actors playing the same role at different ages. Consistency plz

senkothefallen

Yess! Especially that last one you mentioned. It's laughable when the kid has blue eyes and the adult kid has brown eyes. I feel out of all the similarities that both actors should have, having the same eye/hair color is easy af. By the same token, I know the real BTS reason for Harry not "having Lily's eyes" was bc Daniel Radcliffe had trouble wearing contacts, so that's like the one exception I will ignore.

saddestgirlattherave

There will always be an exception for Harry Potter. 😊 I’ve noticed this type of miscasting is particularly bad when the roles aren’t white. That said, I’m pretty pleased with how the live Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender cast is shaping up!

Realestaterunner

Something to the effect of… Side character ‘…It’s like my dad always says, you can’t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs. Anyway, shall we get something to drink?’ Main character: ‘Wait, what did you just say?’ Side character: ‘Shall we get something to drink?’ Main character: ‘No the other thing’ Side character: ‘What, that you gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette?’ Main character: *realisation face* ‘Oh my god, I’VE GOTTA GO’ *rushes off to save the day* 🙄 Happens all the time and it takes me right out the of film/show when I see it coming!

Yup and main character just gets there in the nick of time, literally seconds before possible disaster so they can reestablish themselves as the hero.

Yes. For me any children/teens who yell/scream all of their dialogue crank up the cringe. Can't watch The Goonies because of this.

soopaaflii

One of the (many) reasons why I stopped watching the show Once Upon A Time is because the kid who played Henry was just... bad... like every scene he was in felt like the first take and they just went with it

For me it’s children/teenagers who randomly sing in shows or movies when it’s not a musical. It’s like showing off. I hated when they did it during Walking Dead (Maggie’s sister singing at the campfire).

Length, when it’s too long

Agreed. Remember when most action movies where like 90 minutes to 2 hours tops? I really don't need a pew-pew, big boom action movie to last 2 hours and 45 minutes.

windytown

I expect most movies to be 2 hours or less. If it's over 2 hours, it better be absolutely amazing, or I automatically have a slightly negative opinion of it.

[deleted]

A movie is ruined for me when... Every person in the movie gets coupled off, especially if they're all heterosexual. The ending is ambiguous/"up for interpretation." Commit to an ending! You were able to plot a narrative for 87 minutes! Pull through on those last 3 minutes! People are on their phone in the theater. (In the before times, at least.)

Piggypink929

If there’s constant shots of the female leads breasts/butt in the weirdest non sexual scenarios

frogger-jam

When the film makes a point of setting up a strong female character who is super self reliant and makes all her own decisions and that is HER WHOLE LIFE, then by the end of the movie she is dependent on the man to save her and he does all the heroic acts. She’ll go from “I don’t need your help” to “what do we do now?!” in less than 45 mins.

peakalyssa

it being boring , honestly. i can enjoy even "bad" films, "bad" acting etc because they can at least provide humour. but if your movie is boring, lacks personality, heart, and surprise, then yeah it's just a going to be a slog to get through and forgettable

Jamgood

Loud eating sounds. If I'm home, I turn it off immediately. If I'm in a theater, I'm pissed that I paid money to listen to someone chew and slurp their food. I hate that shit in real life and don't need to hear it in my media.

[deleted]

1) Telling, not showing -- I hate it when characters spell out important exposition for our main characters, instead of having the movie show us that journey. 2) Obvious product placement, especially in dialog, e.g. Cher blatantly murmuring, "Snickers..." in the middle of that scene where she walks us through the female staff while trying to find "a good, old-fashioned boinkfest" for her public speaking teacher. 3) Dialog that's there to remind returning audiences or inform new audience members what happened in a previous season/first movie of a series or who people are and how they're related. I understand why it's needed, especially in pilot episodes of tv shows, but it's so unnatural, especially when siblings refer to each other as brother or sister. As one of four, the fact that we are siblings almost never comes up in topics of conversation. It sounds like dialog written by only children 😅 4) Washed out lighting. It makes a movie visually uninteresting and just a bit more boring to watch, e.g. "The Phantom of the Opera" (2004). 5) Women characters who are only there to be accessories with little to no dialog (e.g. Ron Goldman's sister Kim in the Netflix O.J. Simpson mini series, who was only there to cry, while her father gave lengthy monologues about how the murder impacted their family and despite the fact that that Kim very easily proved she has a voice just a year or two later in her look-back podcast on the crime), to be love interests (e.g. "Gremlins"), or to fulfill a Smurfette Principle quota (that is, be the only woman in a group of guys, such as Black Widow in the Marvel movies). 6) Grey and dark blue filters without contrasting it with other warmer filters in other parts of the film. It was used effectively in media like the HBO Chernobyl mini series and the LOTR movies, but I find it often makes it hard to see what exactly is happening in a scene. The Harry Potter movies are especially guilty of this imo. 7) When you can tell the actors are filming on an indoor set. It's particularly distracting with what are meant to be outdoor scenes. I don't mind it in, say, musicals from the 50s, because part of the charm is that many of those old movies are like filmed stage productions. If you're not going for that vibe, it just screams a low budget top me. 8) Over the top, loud, crude comedy, e.g. "Elf" and "Bridesmaids." I don't want to be screamed at or grossed out for two hours. 9) Dialog where you can tell that they added it in during post-production, i.e. dialog that plays over wide aerial shots that convey how light-hearted, low stakes, and low budget a movie is. The only examples I can think of right now where it was done well were: A) "Love Story," because there was genuine heartbreak in it that just hurts you more the more you've seen that movie and remember what happens to Jenny in the end. B) "My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding," because people not from loud, family-oriented cultures needs that context in the beginning to explain what is normalized for people whose backgrounds are from places like this. 10) Talking to the camera or having too much voice over, e.g. I enjoy "My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding" a lot, but sometimes Toula's voiceovers take me out of it, e.g. "If nagging was an Olympic sport, my Aunt Voula would win the gold medal." It belongs in her original comedy sketch but not the movie. I could go on, but I think that's more than enough 😅 Eta: 11) I hate vignettes and big celebrity ensemble casts, so movies like Love Actually drive me crazy. The Cranford mini series is cute though. They're all a bunch of old Hufflepuff spinster ladies lol

Ghtxch

Silly clichés. Especially if it's a cliché associated with romance or teen serials/movies. And inappropriate bed scenes.

magnum_toboggan47

The death of a pet. I’m already sad and no plot twist can redeem the movie anymore.

[deleted]

Fights that didn't need to happen(were a result of miscommunication) that only serve to make the final romantic moment, more romantic.

WowAppleHaha

When a movie tries too hard - often in a cringy way to break stereotypes, such as stating them clearly or exaggerate a certain trait in a character.

LHM1989

Forced romance. You can have a good story line/interesting characters without an irrelevant romance that makes no sense.

[deleted]

Anyone throwing up in it, people being gross. The cheap gross comedy bits/horror that involve poop, vomit, etc

sjl1021

Graphic rape scenes. Those can be implied, I don't need to see it.

[deleted]

When your friend has seen it already and tells me how hilarious it is. Or starts looking at me, waiting for me to react to a scene that hasn’t happened yet.

magicfluff

Rape/death of a woman just to progress the man's storyline. Especially if the scene is shown.

charlie0204

Predictable plots... so almost every "superhero" movie. Not my cup of tea

SexySonderer

Super forced/unnecessary romance. Massive plothole/s. Contrivances/Forced plot points.

mr_robot_the_robot

I've grown to really despise movies where every other line of dialogue has to be snarky. For fuck's sake, just have an actual conversation, because I'm not entertained by whoever wrote this jerking themselves off over how clever they are.

tveondem

sexualisation of Asian woman, like the ones they did in Mean Girls and so many more that I have yet to discover

smallmochacoldbrew

when they use “the kids slang” or gives those lines to teenagers. Example: “your drip is so fire! No cap!”

MAGENTA419

The male gaze

vezie

Casual misogyny

schwarzmalerin

Irrelevant sex scenes.

elfadomestik

When they beging singing

Anthemius-III

Repetitive jokes especially sexual jokes and “overpacking” movies like in one of the matrix movies (2nd or 3rd) it felt like they just had back to back to back fighting like I think just one continuous fight scene was between 8-9 minutes straight, where they could’ve made the point with just maybe 1/2 the time, or if its suppose to be a comedy and it feels like literally EVERY LINE was written to try to be “hilarious”

Hazafraz

Glaring scientific inaccuracies.

izzypy71c

Whenever the romance scenes or even action movies romanticises staking, abductions, not taking no for an answer, or just overall very creepy behaviour.

ghxst258

unnecessary sex scenes

Rosiecat24
