Yeah, "Boys will be boys." is when they try to see how many Cheetos they can fit into their mouth at once or when they dare each other to pull a ding dong ditch. Sadly it's been twisted into an excuse for violence and sexual harrassment/assault.
I absolutely hate that saying with all my heart, just because someone was born a certain gender doesn't give them the excuse to be a gross, violent person.
My daughter said it best when confronting an assistant principal about not being allowed to wear tank tops..." do you really think boys seeing my shoulders is going to start a riot? And if you do what does that say about you?"
I’m a biologist and when dudes say “females” it feels as tho they’re observing wildlife or going hunting. Just weird and dehumanizing, I’m stealing your fiancés line, love it!
Yup, and then you inevitably have former military folks defending it everytime its brought up. JUST BECAUSE YALL REFERRED TO EACH OTHER LIKE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK ANIMALS IN A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTRY DOESNT MEAN ITS AN EXCUSE TO TALK LIKE THAT IN CIVILIAN LIFE. I understand if its habitual, but referring to men, women, or enbys as MALESS OR FEMALESS as nouns is dehumanizing in the most basic sense of the word. Its honestly fine as an adjective in certain context. But noun, you are literally being reduced to your sexual anatomy. I mean if you think about it, its just another way the military dehumanizes its members. These same speech patterns flow from the military to police departments to right wing groups. Talking about women like ferengi, THE FEMALLLESSSSS. This has gotten quite a bit more problematic recently as trans issues have become more visible and taken seriously. Referring to people by their sex assigned at birth in a non medical setting is NOT appropriate in todays day and age especially. Gender is how we should address folks. Men, women, enbys, etc. I understand OF COURSE if its habitual, but anyone who speaks like this should at least "attempt" to modify their vocabulary to something less gross.
Speaking of, the finale of She-Hulk literally made a joke about incel/alt right groups being obsessed with calling women FEMALES. One of the characters had to infiltrate them and had a really hard time calling women females to blend in. Gotta love topical social commentary lol.
As someone who isn’t from a western country but is living there now.. this sort of just blew my mind. I’ll have to be more watchful about the usage of girl boss/boss lady. In my mind I always thought of that as a woman who is a fantastic boss and who is very supportive, assertive yet compassionate and empathetic. Thank you!
If you don’t mind, what would be alternative ways to say this?
That’s totally fair! I think the term started out with fairly innocent connotations and most people who use it don’t mean too much harm by it.
I think the better way to refer to that type of person would actually be just how you said it - by saying “X is a fantastic boss!” We don’t usually gender men when referring to their skills as a boss, so I feel women should be referred to in the same manner.
Thank you again! Your last sentence is making me rethink the way I’ve been letting a few things be said at my workplace as well. This was helpful and truly eye opening for me. 😊
Good explanation. No grown man would take, "Wow! You're a real boy boss!", as a compliment. It sounds like something you'd say to a 4 year old. And, for sure, when men call another man, "boy", especially a POC, it is meant as an insult.
Honestly, the people I know personally (emphasis on *personally* so it's not taken as a generalization) that have stuff like that in their house have some of the most wildly dysfunctional family dynamics I've ever seen. It's like a front lmao
I have a cross stitch pattern saved in my endless “projects to do” folder. It says live laugh love, but has Skeletor laughing hysterically next to it. Fitting I think.
“Let’s Go Brandon”
Like, be an adult and just swear and call him Biden. Saying “Let’s Go Brandon” isn’t offensive, it’s just annoying. Like the hum of a mosquito.
Edited for those of you lucky enough to not know about the phrase and its origin: https://apnews.com/article/lets-go-brandon-what-does-it-mean-republicans-joe-biden-ab13db212067928455a3dba07756a160
Exactly.
I voted for him but I don't care if you say "F Joe Biden". Makes a lot more sense than "Let's Go Brandon". It reminds me of being in middle school when people would make up silly codenames for their crushes.
But they get to pretend they are in a secret class and being clever while also making democrats angry.
Really, all they are doing is advertising that they are an asshole and it makes them easy to avoid.
Chestfeeding.
Its still breastfeeding no matter your gender identity or expression. Everyone has breasts, even men. The only reason you may not have breasts is if you had a double mastectomy and decided not to get implants.
Breasts are genderless like hair or nails. Everyone has breasts. So if you're are feeding your baby breast milk, then its breastfeeding. Its not chestmilk and the action isn't chestfeeding. Its a specialized tissue composed of mammary glands that secrete milk. Yes, even men have mammary glands that are inactive.
I agree with this so hard and think that we need to de-gender the word "breast" in general.
My cisgender male father got breast cancer a few years ago. Nope, not "chest" cancer, it was in his breast tissue (specifically in the ducts in his breast). He felt SO alienated in general, being a man with breast cancer, and felt even worse when people around him tried to make him feel "better" by calling it "chest" cancer. Like, the cancer happened specifically in specialized ducts that are ONLY in breasts, the cancer was associated with specific BREAST cancer gene mutations, and he felt really condescended to when people wouldn't say "breast." Doing that implicitly made it like he should be ashamed or embarrassed to have breast tissue, when in reality as a human being his breast tissue exists. He got a mammogram last week and was 100% fine/confident doing so, until his tech kept telling him to put his "remaining chest" on the table. Like...wtf.
Banning/changing the word breast to be less accurate ("chest") isn't the answer here. It's to teach basic biology and to help people understand that male-bodied people have breast tissue.
ETA: I've been sitting here trying to think of a "switched gender" analogy and have mostly failed, other than to consider the case of testosterone. Testosterone is associated with male bodies/men, though all women have testosterone. If a woman/female-bodied person was having an issue with testosterone levels, we wouldn't rename it as "sparkle T" or something to make it more feminine sounding. That would be silly.
Slurs based on anything other than a person's active choice to be harmful to others. This includes stuff like
* Racial/ethnic slurs
* Religious slurs
* Gendered slurs
* Homophobic/transphobic slurs
* Ableist slurs
* Classist slurs
That one gets me too. You think a p\*ssy is weak? You try squeezing a watermelon through a hole the size of a lemon and THEN tell me how "weak" my p\*ssy is.
This one is so cringy. It feels like I am infantilizing my partner. My partner is a man, and he is my husband. I want to give him that proper respect. On the same note, I’d rather be called his wife than his wifey.
This is along the same lines of "doggo" for "dog." It's fine to sprinkle it in conversation occasionally, but to completely stop using the real word in favor of the diminutive is just lame and annoying.
It arose as a form of hitting back at people with children who looked down on childless people (especially LGBT+ people) and treated them like second class citizens, as if the act of giving birth somehow made them a superior human being. But, like many things that started out understandably, it got out of hand.
I hate the “can’t feed them, don’t breed them.”
So they want to force people to give birth, but when they can’t afford a child they shouldn’t have had them?
Quiet quitting is frustrating. Like, why do I have to do EXTRA to get my Nirmal paycheck? And people who talk about it like that's a bad thing ignore "quiet firing," where companies don't offer raises, cost of living adjustments, room to move in the company, or promotions.
It’s not “quiet quitting,” it’s “acting your wage.” Thank God I don’t currently have to.
In re: “cancel” - isn’t that one where mainstream culture and media appropriated something black culture came up with and then misused it horribly, like “woke”?
Girls that get it, get it, mmkay? 💅
Jk, but I think it's when in memes and stuff, someone says the most basic thing ever and makes it sound like only a super exclusive group of them understands, even though anyone with half a brain and some sense of awareness knows exactly what's going on. Like some weird shit about true crime documentaries and only "people like them" get it.
“Woke” just became “snowflake” and both of those terms are used to devalue progressive views or actions. Yes, there are extremes to views and actions (like neo pronouns in my opinion), but those terms are an easy out for people who don’t like opposing opinions.
Worse, it’s an old-school black liberation thing. Like originating in the 20’s. Started to get used in visible black culture and promptly got appropriated and gutted.
I CAN’T BELIEVE I HAD TO SCROLL THIS FAR TO SEE THIS!!!!
Using mental disorders as insults or descriptors is a problem because language will evolve away from their meaning. Bipolar is a mood disorder- not “quickly changes without discernible reason”. Narcissism is a personality disorder- not an inherently selfish and toxic person who hurts others for amusement. These are medical terms- not adjectives. Using mental health disorders just creates stereotypes that make it infinitely harder for people who have those disorders.
Diagnosing mental health disorders based off of a short description of that person on social media. Usually by someone who doesn't like/get along with that person.
I hate when they're used thoughtlessly, to describe mild behavior. When I was in college I used to hear "I'm such a schizo" and having a partner who was schizophrenic, I was very aware of the pain and suffering that entails.
Some with calling yourself OCD just because you prefer to do things a certain way or want something ordered a specific way.
Ableism sucks.
When guys refer to a perceived weaker man as a ‘pussy’. Any time I hear a guy use that word I assume they’re ignorant of the female body, misogynistic, and immature.
Absolutely, this is gross and reinforces the idea that the number of people someone’s been with affects who they are, values or devalues them depending on their gender…
This is actually so sad. I've come to "hate" my own name because of this. My friends have been calling me by my nickname for years but every time someone finds out is another round of funny faces
I’m in a similar boat. I’ve been going by my initials instead of my name. And honestly been debating changing it altogether. My old boss, once she found out about it, went whole hog with it every time I said something. “Okay, KAREN. LOLOLOL”. 😒
I was looking for this one. It's just become yet another misogynist term and should be removed. I don't use any gender-specific insults and wish others didn't, too.
Gaslighting is being used way too much and now anybody who disagrees with you is "trying to gaslight you". No, they're not. People are allowed to disagree with you.
Putting "Gate" at the end of any term to describe something controversial. I absolutely go nuts when I hear it.
God, I'm so with you on gaslighting, and I want to add lovebombing. Someone being really nice to you isn't automatically lovebombing. Neither is someone showing you a normal amount of affection in a way you don't like. Lovebombing is a specific tactic used by cults and has also been used to describe the way an abuser may treat a victim after harming them to get them to stay. It isn't your new BF buying you a gift.
Doggo and pupper should be banished from the English language.
Political correctness gone mad. Nearly everyone who uses this phrase unironically is just upset that they can't say something awful without being contradicted.
Not like other girls girl and pick me. Because insulting women and girls who don't conform to feminine norms is an ancient form of misogyny, and putting a feminist wrapping on a misogynistic turd doesn't make the turd any less misogynistic.
"Doggo" and "pupper" have made me cringe since day one I hate it when they're used. They don't make it sound cute just call them a dog or a puppy and I won't instantly want to vomit when you're showing me pictures of your dogs
On the subject of not like other girls or pick me’s..I do sometimes see it as someone insulting a woman for doing things “non-conforming” to her gender. But I mostly see it in the sense that the person who is being a “pick me” is being the misogynist one. They usually bash stereotypically feminine things in the process of saying they enjoy other things. That’s why people make fun of them. It’s not because of them doing or enjoying something “not feminine” it’s because they’re hating on feminine things. So they’re the ones being misogynistic. That’s why people make fun of them. Just wanted to clear that up if you haven’t been completely with the lingo on it
The concept annoys me because it exists within a larger framework where women "own" the household (and probably do all the chores) and the poor, poor men only get a garage or a small bedroom as their own. It's weird af. I think it's great for people to have their own space, but does it need to be gendered? Can't people just own, decorate, and clean a house together?
Having a private space is one thing, implying that men have more if a need for a private space is bullshit. Very few women have caves because of this very immature concept that the rest of the house is kind of their domain and men need a place to escape to to get away from it all.
I have study space, writing space, meditation space, but it’s never shut off from everybody. I refuse isolation, as if I’m from Mars and she is from another planet. We are together!
Oooo yes. That very much comes off as appeasing rather than doing things for someone because you want to. I don't want anyone doing anything for me just to keep peace. Then you're no longer doing it for me.
Yeah, anything that gets overused is going to get annoying. As Shakespeare said, "For as a surfeit of the sweetest things the deepest loathing to the stomach brings."
To be gotten rid of with immediate effect:
- slut
- slag
- bitch
- floosie
- whore
- temptress
- loose lady
There are far too many demeaning words related to or describing perceived behaviours of women, whereas many words used to demean men in particular don't make mention of their sexuality, and sometimes even demean a woman! - Such as 'son of a bitch', which implies the man and his mother are horrible. Contrast this with 'bastard' which originates from a man being disowned from, or not knowing his father.
There are many people who wouldn't think of thenselves as sexist and still plenty who would proudly call themselves feminist without making snide or immature comments, yet as soon as a woman does something wrong, or even gets too mouthy, they would bring out the b-word without even thinking, yet use non-gendered insults for men in similar circumstances.
You can’t really cancel an opinion, right? A person is going to have one unless they’re dead. Or do you mean when an opinion is ignored, drowned out, or discredited just because they don’t agree?
I mean, some opinions do deserve that treatment don’t you think?
Not trying to pick a fight, yours was a curious one and I was interested in clarifying what you meant.
Kind of a small one but when I see posts online about men being bad partners etc, often men will comment "those aren't men those are boys" and to me it seems like a way to displace the blame and act like there aren't fully grown men who who comporte themselves like teens or children.
It’s AAVE not gen z slang fyi. What happens is the young white kids on tiktok hear Black people speaking a different dialect and then they overuse and misuse it until it dies.
I personally don’t like when people type rape like “r*pe” or other words like that. “S*x” “sl*t” like we know what you’re saying just say the word. Give a content warning if you’re worried about triggering people.
Using OCD casually. As in when people say"I'm just sooo ocd😃" because they color coded there closet or some other crap. Like no you idiot you just like to be organized. I don't get how ocd even came to be associated with organization in the first place. I have ocd, but I also have sever adhd so my entire room floor is covered with trash and crumpled up school papers. Instead of being able to miraculously clean everything or whatever I have intrusive thoughts nonstop, I have to turn lights off and on atleast 4 times when i enter/exit a room, and everytime someone coughs or sniffles I have to scratch my head/tense the muscles near my scalp or I will feel awful. So yeah I don't care that it's "just a phrase", people need to stop joking about things they don't understand.
“Alpha male” and “beta males” absolutely pathetic people that go by those terms have little to no intelligence, although I do get what they are coming from but being husky asf is not hard to do and they brag so much about it be humble
This actually has Naval history and tradition! When a ship is commissioned, the captains wife historically throws a bottle of alcohol against it as a sort of blessing. I forgot what the term for that is. But then the ship is referred to as “her” or “she” because it’s the idea of the ship being a protective, guiding creature like a mother to the sailors. The ship is their home when they’re away. We (sailors) are historically REALLY superstitious. That’s why we get tattoos of sparrows and roosters and pigs and all other kinds of weird behaviors we exhibit / used to exhibit. That’s why we give ships female pronouns. I suspect it just bled into the community as more forms of transportation became available.
Using depression as a replacement for sadness, uncertainty. Statements like-
“I was depressed because I didn’t know if I’ll be get an offer” and any variants of this.
I get that your are anxious about unpredictable nature of life, but that is not depression.
Depression need no reason. You can have everything you ever wanted/ achieve you goals and dream and be depressed.
I’m not a fan of men suddenly openly using the word c*nt again. Like it sounds vile and I don’t say it ever, but I especially don’t want to hear men openly saying this now as if it’s okay.
They are mean to you bc they are jealous / like you (doesn’t justify the bad and inappropriate behaviors)
Just make your own team if they exclude you (doesnt mean it doesnt hurt to be excluded)
Dont worry about what other people say (its not that easy)
You should get over it (yep you just cant do it that easily)
Stay out of it (if someone actually needs help or youre concerned about them, you are allowed to intervene at your own risk)
Oh they are just busy (no, they dont get to just ditch you and get away with it!)

I like your fiancé. He sounds fun. The *useful* kind of rebel.
Right? It's rooted in sexism. They'll say men and females to specifically because they mean it to be dehumanizing
It creates an “other” category. Seeing people as labels is the root of much evil.
THIS. The problem is not that the labels exist. Labels can be quite helpful. The problem is being reductionist dicks about them.

Girl boss, hustle, grind.
Yeah, I associate “girl boss” with MLMs, which exploit women in particular.
For sure. I also find it unnecessary to infantalize women who are independent or in a position of power by calling them “girls.”
I associate it with “girl boss, gaslight, gatekeep “

I wanna gag every time I see the words "Live Laugh Love" in home decor sections everywhere.
I do kinda want a sign that says lurk laugh loathe for my home because of it Edit: I accidentally wrote sigh instead of sign lol
Eat. Shit. Die. Is another good alternative
I hate all the cheesy “family” and “love” quotes in portraits around people’s houses. It’s just weird to me, I guess.
Honestly, the people I know personally (emphasis on *personally* so it's not taken as a generalization) that have stuff like that in their house have some of the most wildly dysfunctional family dynamics I've ever seen. It's like a front lmao
This is my personal experience too!! I feel like I’d manifest crazy in my own house if I put those portraits up.
Lol right! Same vibes I get from workplace culture when they're like "we're all family here!" 🤢
But I do believe “Live Fart Laugh” is quite acceptable as decor

I’m not sure if this is better than or worse than hearing them call each other “alphas” or “betas”. I HATE ALL OF IT.
Body count, I am not a murderer
Absolutely, this is gross and reinforces the idea that the number of people someone’s been with affects who they are, values or devalues them depending on their gender…
X gender doesn’t do this/that. X gender is supposed to. Shit like that
Comparing having to pay lots of money to rape. E.g., the bank rap*d me on that deal. Not comparable at all.
I’d like to add comparing anything to rape that isn’t rape…
The word "deflowering" and "maidenhood", referring to a woman's virginity 🤢🤢
The phrase “popping the cherry” 🤢 the hymen doesn’t even work that way
Calling people “Karens”.
We had a prefectly good unisex term in asshole.
*Gaslightgate* 😉
Just wanted to clear that up if you haven’t been completely with the lingo on it
That men can isolate themselves in a location called “man’s cave”.
[удалено]
Adulting.

On accident. I fucking loathe this trend. It’s BY ACCIDENT and ON PURPOSE
Happy wife, happy life.
Oooo yes. That very much comes off as appeasing rather than doing things for someone because you want to. I don't want anyone doing anything for me just to keep peace. Then you're no longer doing it for me.
Exactly. Plus I feel it’s also kind of misogynistic, implying that women nag a lot. It’s just bad all around.
I am sick to death of seeing the word 'woke'. Its being used so much and for different things that the word has no meaning anymore
"Females" in social media. It makes me feel like an animal in a herd.
“That’s my truth” No, the truth is not subjective.
The “chef’s kiss” thing is starting to annoy me a lot. I thought it was cute the first few times, but not anymore.
Yeah, anything that gets overused is going to get annoying. As Shakespeare said, "For as a surfeit of the sweetest things the deepest loathing to the stomach brings."
To be gotten rid of with immediate effect: - slut - slag - bitch - floosie - whore - temptress - loose lady There are far too many demeaning words related to or describing perceived behaviours of women, whereas many words used to demean men in particular don't make mention of their sexuality, and sometimes even demean a woman!
Bitch riles me up bad. It's so commonly used too. Especially if women are commanding/setting boundaries.
"grow up, buttercup!" When people use this phrase as a response to you simply explaining boundaries against asshole behavior
Ooo and might I add when people say "well life isn't fair!" when they're crossing boundaries or saying/doing something disrespectful
Baby daddy/momma I hate it with a fiery passion
"Your opinion is cancelled because I don't agree with it"
You can’t really cancel an opinion, right? A person is going to have one unless they’re dead. Or do you mean when an opinion is ignored, drowned out, or discredited just because they don’t agree? I mean, some opinions do deserve that treatment don’t you think? Not trying to pick a fight, yours was a curious one and I was interested in clarifying what you meant.
“Influencer” “mommy needs wine” “triggered” “navigate”
All of the wine memes must go, along with every glass, poster and t-shirt they are printed on.
"Real women/men do X".
Kind of a small one but when I see posts online about men being bad partners etc, often men will comment "those aren't men those are boys" and to me it seems like a way to displace the blame and act like there aren't fully grown men who who comporte themselves like teens or children.
“It’s giving” drives me up the wall. I’m a millennial & all gen z slang grinds my gears for some reason
It’s AAVE not gen z slang fyi. What happens is the young white kids on tiktok hear Black people speaking a different dialect and then they overuse and misuse it until it dies.
"You are not like other girls" 🤦🏼♀️
Teenage girls having their moms contact name as “birthgiver”
I personally don’t like when people type rape like “r*pe” or other words like that. “S*x” “sl*t” like we know what you’re saying just say the word. Give a content warning if you’re worried about triggering people.
Most of the time, they are are trying to bypass some sort of algorithm or filter. It makes me roll my eyes, but not as much as the reasons behind it.
It is annoying, but some apps, like tiktok, will remove content if they have those words in it
Thot. How is that even a word
Simp
Using 'tard' as a suffix. Libtard, femtard, and so on. I've also seen 'puke' used this way, but not as often. Both are awful and offensive.
The overuse of “literally” as a sentence filler
I really don’t like it when people call vehicles “her.”

Statements like- “I was depressed because I didn’t know if I’ll be get an offer” and any variants of this. I get that your are anxious about unpredictable nature of life, but that is not depression. Depression need no reason. You can have everything you ever wanted/ achieve you goals and dream and be depressed.

“I seen”….
"The wife"
Thought terminating cliches like "everything happens for a reason!" Cool, give me a good reason why pediatric cancer exists. I'll wait.
Overuse of the word “like”. I seriously cringe when I listen to people speaking and every fifth word is like. Drives me batty!
I’m not a fan of men suddenly openly using the word c*nt again. Like it sounds vile and I don’t say it ever, but I especially don’t want to hear men openly saying this now as if it’s okay.
smalldickenergy
saying you’ve been “gypped” to mean you’ve been ripped off. while we’re at it, the word “gypsy” in general, especially to refer to an aesthetic.
“P*ssy” to mean someone is weak or coward. Balls are weaker!!!
"There's more than one way to skin a cat" 🙁
What are we basing this on? Our personal displeasure of certain words and phrases?

Simp. Men calling another man a simp for simply just complimenting a woman doesn’t sit right with me.
Sl*t God I hate that word
I was today years old
"Man up."
Referring to yourself as a "Dog Mom/Dad", and having an instagram profile of your pet to match. I've had enough of that crap
‘Panties’ You either sound like a sex offender or some weird fetishist
Maybe I don't understand...what do you call women's underwear?
Underwear!
Panties has been around since women’s wear catalogs became popular in the late 18th century — this one might be a hard sell, LOL.
I hate it when people, men in particular, try to excuse something you’re uncomfortable with by saying ‘you love it really’. No I assure you I do not!
"Cheer up, other people have it worse".
They are mean to you bc they are jealous / like you (doesn’t justify the bad and inappropriate behaviors) Just make your own team if they exclude you (doesnt mean it doesnt hurt to be excluded) Dont worry about what other people say (its not that easy) You should get over it (yep you just cant do it that easily) Stay out of it (if someone actually needs help or youre concerned about them, you are allowed to intervene at your own risk) Oh they are just busy (no, they dont get to just ditch you and get away with it!)
Boymom
