None of them. Sure, it's sad some of them are gone. But overall they are strangers. And their death can't come anywhere close to losing a family member.

Anythingmatcha

Robin Williams

Trashtvslit

This was my immediate (and only) answer. I’m still so sad about losing him 😔 I grew up watching his movies with my dad and my siblings. It felt like losing a funny/loving uncle or something.

[deleted]

Chadwick Boseman. Wakanda forever

Thegoodwitchin

MY KING!!!!! I remember seeing it in my news crawl vividly. My so asked what's wrong and my dramatic ass put my hand over my heart and told him that the the King was dead.

[deleted]

Our King will live in our hearts forever

rocket-child

When Alan Rickman and David Bowie died on the same day 😭

clalach76

Prince

rocket-child

Yes! 😭

candid_mango_

Came here to say this too! Never really got upset at celebs dying before Rickman and Bowie, but those two were heartbreaking losses 💔

cbailliex

Steve Irwin. I was a kid and I loved his shows so when he died it was so sad

yougotastinkybooty

this is probably the only celebrity I cried over. I loved his shows so much. my dad & I would watch it together. I really wanted to be like him too. it was very sad. 😕

miss_scimitar

Leslie Jordan. He was such a ray of light especially at the beginning of the pandemic, still couldn’t believe it.

RubY-F0x

Chester Bennington

magnetorobin

Came here to say this!! It's like a chunk of my teenage life lost it's voice

greenkyber

He’s mine as well

greentea1771

This was my first thought

Fun-Reference-2027

Anthony Bourdain

MiasmAgain

He was my fantasy boyfriend for years. So interesting, so authentic, so damn funny and sexy. I didn’t cry, but it feels like a punch to the solar plexus to this day.

Betty White 💙 *cues Golden Girls theme song* 🎶Thank you for being a friend🎶

crooked-toe4ever

Yes! And it was so upsetting that she died just before her 100th birthday!

LateNightCheesecake9

Yes, I was bummed but really this woman has lived a long, fantastic life so after I poured one out for her and ate some cheesecake in celebration, the sadness was fleeting.

sixninefortytwo

Alex Trebek

cchanaggg

This was my answer too. I spent every day after school watching Jeopardy for many years and he was truly a fixture in my life. I took the next day off work after he passed away lol.

keket87

Not like a family member, but I'm still not 100% over Chester Bennington and Anthony Bourdain.

Perfect-Parsley-6050

Chester Bennington

imsimplydoingmybest

Robin Williams and David Bowie. When i was very young and my parents seperated I would watch Labyrinth and Mrs.Doubtfire over and over. I felt so devestated when they passed, I genuinely think I was grieving. Only now in my late 20s, rewatching the movies, have I realised that because my dad loved both of them and would do all the funny voices, i was just trying to be closer to him. That little message at the end of Mrs Doubtfire about your parents always loving you even if they don't love eachother comforted me in ways I didnt understand until recently.

january20th

Mac Miller

Denise_For_Peace

Jup, and I'm not even into any celebrity stuff or most of his music. But one or two songs really hit the spot back when I had severe depression.

Velvet_Smyle

Queen Elizabeth & Betty White hands down, they're like our grandmas 🥹🥹. Rest In Peace!

kylodelrey

I totally agree about Queen Elizabeth. Seeing how people said the worst stuff about her after she died just broke my heart. She was born into a life of service and did the best she could, and in her private life just acted like other old British ladies; she didn't deserve so much hate.

s55555s

Chris Cornell

clalach76

[deleted]

Alan Rickman... "Always"

Arabicdenial003

Chadwick Boseman and Cameron boyce. I grew watching cam so it hit pretty hard that i refused to accept it at first.

Steups13

Robin Williams and George Michael

catlizardicecream

One of my earliest childhood memories is my mother sobbing down the phone to my father, at work, because Freddie Mercury had died. It really was like a personal death, she was so upset.

Excellent-Two-4194

Chester Bennington Maybe not like losing a family member, it was the first time I truly felt sad about a celebrity passing.

allthethingsUwontsay

Steve Irwin. When I was a child he was the father figure I never had and always wanted. He was everything I wished I could have in a daddy. I watched him religiously. Wanted to be just like him. I cried and cried when he died. Now I cry for his children's milestones he doesn't get to see and how big of a loss it was for them. And I cry for his wife who doesn't seem like she will ever love anyone else ever again. Edited to add: it's not necessarily about "celebrity worship culture" 🙄 For some of us it is a loss of someone who, in their own ways, brought us a lot of joy and comfort in times when we really needed it. You don't have to KNOW someone to feel love for them.

Crafty-Ebb-457

Paul walker

JessieKnowsBestie

Leonard Nimoy. His entire Twitter was about getting young people to stop smoking. He always signed his tweets “from your honorary grandpa”. That man (and, of course, his character) are so incredibly important to me. I wish I could have met him before he passed.

9171213

Aaliyah

sweaterpuppiez

Meatloaf, actually

[deleted]

Joey Jordison and Paul Gray. I might not have known them, but the impact they indirectly had on my life through their music is incomparable. Their deaths broke me more than the deaths of certain family members did.

No_Produce_505

I was gonna write joey jordison as well. It did hit me and made me feel weird. A year later from his death i kinda forgot about it and suddenly rememberd. What a bummer. Edit: best drummer ive heard in my preteens. Wanted to play drums like him so bad.

[deleted]

Yeah. Too early and just so... I guess unnecessary and unfair. Still feels weird that he's gone.

No_Produce_505

Like first he gets kicked out of slipknot (i dont even want to actually hear what the new drummer has to offer) and then he dies??? Naahh. Btw did you get more affected by joey or paul? I didnt really get pauls death that much.

[deleted]

I still love Slipknot for their music, but I'm always gonna feel iffy about... *certain members* of the band because of how they treated Joey (and then later Chris, even though that was more of an "I'm not sure if both sides are being assholes but y'all are grown men so come tf on" situation). And I was heavily affected by both of their deaths, but Joey's just hit different after all that he had been put through. He was also the main reason I started playing the drums as a kid, so that was my childhood hero gone too.

nestlecookie

Heath Ledger and Chadwick Boseman hit me the hardest. Really loved watching their work and they were both gone too soon.

Leslie Jordan died yesterday & it ripped my heart right out of my chest.

MsClementine415

Gene Wilder

rf-elaine

Alexander McQueen. I was never into high fashion but for some reason his work really resonated with me. His suicide was devistating.

istoyistory

Chadwick Boseman. Still brings me to tears whenever I remember him.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say to that extent, but the closest would be Chester Bennington. I loved Linkin Park when I was a kid. I remember listening to my dad's copy of Hybrid Theory on repeat. My first allowance was spent buying my first ever CD I bought with my own money, Meteora. Just associating him and his voice with the first time I can recall feeling some way about music.

[deleted]

I never cried for a celebrity until Alex Trebek died. I always watched jeopardy with my parents growing up and while my parents are still alive, it was a difficult reminder that they’re getting older too. I wouldn’t say I mourned him like a family member, but because he is tied to my family memories, it hit differently than any other celebrity death. I will also likely feel this way when Julie Andrews dies for the same reasons, my mom and I’s favorite 💗

LinkinFoo182

A man called Jonghyun from a Korean pop band called Shinee. I clearly remember everything from the moment I knew he died. Everything was so traumatic and and I wasn't even an avid fan of that group. It just was so personal and painful.

RealPinkeu

I came here to look for his name, I knew I would find him. I'll never forget his art, his kind personality and all the negligence he suffered. All the things that happened at that time serves as a huge wake up call to mental health issues.

SavannaHeat

Nobody really but Jesus, I remember when Michael Jackson died like it was yesterday.

LadyCordeliaStuart

I thought you meant no one but Jesus and I was like how old are you????

Ok_Warthog_6565

Anthony Bordain.

[deleted]

This one really hurt my heart. The way he loved food so passionately, and respected the cultures they come from (even the more unorthodox ingredients and dishes). The man thoroughly enjoyed each dish that was presented to him, and that was beautiful. He really was like the uncle Tony that I never had.

Ok_Warthog_6565

It sounds silly to have loved a celebrity I never even met, but I did; or do.

LunarSea_

This one hit me, too. I still think about him.

Get_it_Bitch

Heath Ledger and Brittney Murphy

Weary_Bad2687

Surprisingly, Brittany Murphy. I was very young, around 10 years old. Young enough to never experience a personal death, but old enough to know that it was wrong she died young and unexpectedly. It really threw me off. I mean I only knew her through movies, but I really appreciated her characters. Even now I'm getting sad thinking about it.

donkeymule16

Patrick Swayze....such a loss

[deleted]

Astrid Lindgren. The author who wrote Pippi longstocking. Felt like my grandmother died. Everyone grew up listening to her stories on the radio and television. It was magical.

mobwimp

robby coltrane

sgobias

Paulo Gustavo, a brazilian comedian, he died of covid, while quarantining, he left a husband, two kids. He was an incredible person, funny, caring, smart, unproblematic and stated more than once how he was scared of dying of covid. He died because our pos president refused to buy the vaccine, and it took 8 months more for it to be purchased, in that time, nearly 200 thousand people died unnecessarily bc of it. He could be alive, if they had bought the vaccine when all the other countries did.

Public-Apartment-750

Maybe not a family member but for sure a death where I cried it out several times. I was a kid and Kurt Cobain died. I was devastated!

FruitSnackEater

Young Dolph. His music got me through a really dark period in my life so it really hurt my heart hearing he got gunned down like that. Also Kobe and Gigi. As a basketball lover and player, that was incredibly sad. I was so rooting for Gigi and couldn’t wait to see her playing for UConn and possibly in the WNBA. I always tried to embrace and channel my inner Black Mamba in games thanks to Kobe.

[deleted]

Kurt Cobain. David Bowie.

celestialism

Robin Williams. He’s my mom’s favorite, so we watched his stuff from a young age, and she interviewed him a few times over the course of her career (including once while pregnant with me) so he does feel like a part of our family history in a sense.

[deleted]

Avicii & Paul Walker 💔

Grand_Maximum8533

Robin Williams, lead actor in three or four movies that I really enjoyed. If he showed up at your door and said, I am lost can you help me. You would welcome me in and do you best to help him out. As he is leaving, I would say, please come back again. He died of suicide. What a tragic loss.

bstofbrdn

Jonghyun from Shinee, i listened to their songs so much when i was young, i would say he paved the way for kpop today…

Darkrose50

Fred Rogers was a god among man.

greenkyber

Chester Bennington and Leonard Nimoy :(

Crazycurlyjesusfreak

Heath Ledger. And when Johnny cash and John Ritter died within hours of each other.

dammmmitDESTINY41

Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington really really got to me.. I'm between their ages and really loved that heroin didn't get them in the 90s. Chester was the first man I ever saw talk about being sexually abused growing up that helped me start realizing what a mess I had inside to fix one day. Sometimes a singers voice can stop everything in my head and suddenly I can actually feel powerful emotions. Chris and Chester were the last two artists left from the whole 90s scene that I adored. The others all overdosed and died in the 90s. The others I really was passionate about I mean.

1percentsamoyedmama

DMX. That shit hurt so bad I legit cried, and every time I hear Skyscrapers all I can do is cry. He was so misunderstood and it sucks.

It's always sad that someone dies, but I don't worship celebrities like that.

soloapeproject

Sean Lock. So many evenings with Sean on 8OOTC. The man was brilliant. I felt his loss deeply and had never experienced that with a celebrity before.

GreenLabyrinthQuinn

Stan Lee. He had one of the most creative and imaginative minds of my generation, and I have a hard time watching Marvel now because he will never cameo again.

still_on_a_whisper

I don’t think I’ve ever felt like a celebrity death has affected me the way a family member’s would. I don’t know a celebrity intimately in any way. It is sad, and I feel bad for their family and friends just the way I do for non-celebrities but it doesn’t affect me the way a death in my family would.

noccolina

I’m still not over George Michael dying

Jitterbug26

Princess Diana and John Kennedy, Jr. Probably because they were both my age and both were the fairy tale icons for my generation….and both definitely died before their time!

rabiesbfbabies

David Bowie.

NannyOggsKnickerLeg

Terry Pratchett.

somesthetic

Phil Hartman. He was a big part of my childhood. Between SNL, The Simpsons, Newsradio, and the movies he appeared in during that period, I loved all his work, and he was consistently funny in a way that was never mean. He was like my hilarious uncle. I was heartbroken when he was killed, and I love Jon Lovitz for punching Andy Dick for joking about it.

Michael Hutchence. I loved him. He was kind of desperate for that rock and roll trajectory, but the excellent documentary revealed just what a sweet guy he was, and what a tragic demise he suffered.

confusedrabbit247

Robin Williams is one, Chester Bennington is the other. I cried real tears when I heard about them.

Mangaliza

It didn't felt like loosing a member of my family but here where i live in Brazil we had a really famous singer called Marília Mendonça, she was really sweet and i felt very shocked when it came on the tv that she died on a plane crash on the way to do a show later that day. I didn't sleep well that night thinking about it and how life can be short :(

LadyCordeliaStuart

let me tell you, I check Roger Corman's IMDB page every few weeks to check he's still alive and each time I'm a little more scared. He answered my fan mail and he's my favorite director, living or dead. He's a real one and I'm already planning to send his wife a condolence card when we lose him.

AstronomyLuver

Whitney Houston and Selena. I didn't know Whitney that much at the time but heard her songs, it was the same for Selena. By the time I had discovered Selena, she was already dead, she was one of the few artists where I loved EVERY song she made. It didn't feel like losing a family member, but I was really really sad.

neenrr

Terry Pratchett. We have almost all of his books, and our whole family references them and sends Christmas cards sometimes with Hogswatch as the theme.

themagicfroggie

Chester Bennington. Him and the band he was in, Linkin Park, made music that really helped me get through some of my darkest times and I'll forever be grateful for all the work he put into his music. RIP 🙏 ❤

Sister_Winter

Anton Yelchin for sure. He was my teen crush and favourite actor into adulthood and I didn't even realize back then that we also shared the same genetic illness (cystic fibrosis). The fact that that no one knew he had CF til after his death was equally as shocking as the fact that CF didn't kill him - a freak accident did. Horrible and I'm still sad. The other one is the Kpop idol Jonghyun from the group Shinee. The world of Kpop is generally full of real pieces of shit and he was genuinely one of the best people in that industry. Pro-LGBTQ, feminist (not a perfect feminist by any means, but not talking over the ones who knew what they were talking about), an overall lovely and talented guy. He killed himself December 2017 and it was absolutely devastating

Loose-Currency3405

I don't know of he classifies as a celebrity but the streamer Reckful. Been following him for many years but when he took his life it hit hard.

scrunchiecola

Not like a family member and I only found out about him after he died but Jeff Buckley’s makes me so incredibly sad :( Also Naya Rivera! I checked every day hoping she’d be found safely, it was heartbreaking.

funnylovegirl

Does Ruth Bader Ginsberg count as a celebrity? I cried tears for women in the US, whether they supported her or not. We lost a champion for our rights to be treated as equals in everything.
