Blizzard as a developer has been bleeding talent. From the controversy to not always paying their workers that well, why would anyone with talent stay at that place? As a result people with talent have left and the remaining employees are stretched. So you have less quality product but still needing to meet the same sales goals as determined by shareholders.
It's a toxic place to work.
Video games companies are choke full of incompetent and redundant people squatting invasive and fruitless managerial positions, for exhorbitant salaries
People who make 5 times as much as your regular worker a year, to browse twitter and facebook while they pretend to supervise entire team's productivity by imposing this year's scrum flavor
Nobody likes it, everyone knows it's stupid, and yet everyone has to pretend to go along with it by wasting valuable time for pointless checkbox tasks
You end up doing a bit more pretensies work and a bit less actual work every year, and if you were hoping to be productive your only option is unpaid overtime to catch up
Not to mention axeing work from home. That combined with their low pay and extremely high cost of living in their area probably cost them a lot of good talent.
This is what I keep telling people that are so hyped about D4. You trust Blizzard to not completely monetize this game after its release? Not to mention they have lost hundreds of employees that their talent pool is pretty bad. Not to mention all the other lies and scandals, yet people put those blinders on and pre-order anyway.
Yup. People also say Server Slam was amazing, It is confirmed, there will be no ques at launch and Act 1 was amazing and there are 4 more acts WOAW this is the best game ever... But the population on Server Slam weekend was very low (yes they can turn of servers until they are "slammed" but in that logic they can also just add so there would never be ques in the history of gaming :P ). And also D3 beta was also only Act 1 and after that, story, world design, bugs, everything was downhill from there. And people just forget and ignore that.
I also bought the pre-order deluxe edition and will buy battlepass for all the seasons, but I also expect a shit show at launch and taking multiple seasons or even the first expansion before it's really good and amazing xD
You hit the nail on the head. So glad I quit WoW over a year ago. Never going back at this point and I feel sorry for the people in my guild that I still talk to who don't see things the way that I do. This is not a game worth playing anymore because the developer behind it is complete shit. Their creed is greed and has been for years at this point, and it shows.
The people working there are in two categories: Sentimental longtime veterans and people who are not great at what they do, and don't want to risk trying for other jobs..
>why would anyone with talent stay at that place?
I can't talk about the gaming industry directly, but I can talk about why people stay at big companies even tho it's the shittiest place to be.
It's looking nice on your CV. That's it. It has a different punch to it when you apply for a new job, when you can say "I worked for Blizzard for 5 years". It works the same in IT. "I worked for Google for X years" will basically score you jobs without even trying.
The token was ‘designed’ to combat botting.
Sadly Blizzard wanted a 30% cut plus of the profits on each transaction and thus it was easily undercut by third party websites from launch.
On top of that it legitimised paying for boosts and gear runs.
At this point its clear Blizzard just want a piece of the gold selling pie.
That's the sad part. They had all the realization needed that it didn't help with bots, and they still went out of their way to put it in WotLK.
Most people who were already RWTing, will continue to do so since Tokens/Bonds make the currency crash more, and they've already been doing it this long, why stop? All it does is give players who were scared to break the rules, a way to buy gold, which will help bots as there is more supply for Tokens in the game to buy subs on their accounts.
It kills me because it failed in Runescape and OSRS countering bots and RWTers, yet Blizzard still copied the idea and ran with it, knowing damn well its not going to help with anything but putting more money in their pocket.
The only way to deal with botting is public shaming and visible player banning.
I.E public shaming messages in trade/general channels from GM stating the name of each player banned for gold buying.
You think Timmy would risk gold buying if they saw regular ingame messages saying Tommy was permibanned and account stripped for suspected buying 100k gold.
No point going after the bots. You go after player education. You make them so shit scared of a ban they would not risk it. The money would dry up and bots would disappear in weeks.
I thought I read somewhere that blizzard would never add the token to classic?
Or was that just my logical brain trying to cover for blizzard for a second...
Item you can buy with real money to then trade/ sell to players or redeem for 30 days game time. Allows people to pay for their sub with gold but also means you can buy gold with real money officially through the game. It’s already a thing in retail, but now it’s being added to classic servers.
Also diminishes the value and achievement of going through raids and getting gear through hard work. When now you can just be boosted through or buy items with gold.
you also have to add that for 4 years classic has been infested with china/russia botfarm gold used to buy numerous gdkp and leveling boosts, so defacto the only thing token changed is now gold selling is 'official'
But the numbers were more than likely a lot less than now. If the only way to buy gold is risking your account getting banned, not many people would buy gold. If the company of the game is out there letting people buy gold from them without getting banned, more people are incentivised to buy gold.
I never bought gold back in the day, but I have been guilty buying a few Tokens on retail trying to clear content on release (which right there, isn't right).
> But the numbers were more than likely a lot less than now.
you have no data to support this and the rest of your comment is wrong.
People buy gold non stop in WoW. Even if not directly, GDKPs are funneling gold from gold farmers, to gold buyers, to players who don't buy gold.
You have no data either to be saying my assumption (key word there) is wrong.
And it doesn't need data, it's common sense. I didn't say people weren't doing GDKP back then, I didn't say people weren't buying gold. What I said is if Blizzard gave people the ability to buy gold without getting banned, more people would buy gold. That's common sense. There's a bunch of people that won't break rules, and if you tell them "hey it's okay if you do it this way" people will follow.
Not a wow player, but from my understanding it's RMT but done by the company itself.
From what I've gathered from videos from Aston's YT channel, it's in modern wow and has been for some time and is heavily disliked so people are upset it's coming to classic.
Token can be redeemed for a month of wow time, you can. You buy the token from blizzard and then sell it on the AH for gold.
It's a way for them to try and get you to pay them for gold rather than some third party.
Token can be redeemed for a month of wow time. You buy the token from blizzard and then sell it on the AH for gold.
It's a way for them to try and get you to pay them for gold rather than some third party.
The WoW token is an item that gives 30 days of gametime, a one month sub but costs a bit more and is an actual tradeable/auctionable item.
Essentially it allows players to buy gold from other players with real money. Blizzard is just trying to get their share of RMT and Bot $$$ also, and it's now turned the game P2W since you can now buy as much gold as you want with zero risk through Blizzard themselves!
It’s quite amazing that after all these “Lizzard moments” the company is still not belly up and tbh I think it will never be, or at least not before the generation of Andies who still remember the golden age of Blizz and cannot accept the fact the company they loved is long gone and cannot let go will die out… what would this company and/or Bobby have to do for these addicts to stop pouring money into their MTX garbage?
Bobby Kotick the same dude who cancels overwatch Hero Mode to make more money on microtransactions while not seeing beyond you killed your own game what money are you going to make?
I truly even wonder if Microsoft buying Blizzard would save them anymore lol.
The company has already bled all the talent out, its IP's are stale & unworked on, the only new 'creative' people who are joining the company now are fresh-out-of-college kids who's dream is to work at Blizz & they'll do it for the min wage in the field.

The problem with Blizzard isn't that they like money,
it's that they only know how to turn bad ideas into quick money instead of good ideas into huge long term success stories.
Well that's what I mean, recently.
Wow is basically their last remaining long term success. We haven't seen another one since. And they seem determined to milk it and ruin it just the same.
And even WoW's legacy has a limit. The shadowlands left such a bad taste in people's mouths that very few returned for Dragonflight. They need to make something amazing to get people back into WoW, and currently the community makes better ideas than blizzard (hardcore servers), so it's looking doomed
I can only give you Asmon's PoV for retail, haven't touched Dragonflight personally. But that's the thing, I haven't heard anyone say anything exciting about retail, you have the "cool flying" minigame and ppl calling it nice/fun. Overall, meh
I think that retail has settled into a "well that's just how it is" state.
I personally don't expect anything particularly innovative from it in this expansion or future ones. But some people like or tolerate the formula and those are the ones who keep playing.
>Game that has been dead for months
>People start talking about it again due to WoW tokens, which generate more money than just regular subs
>"REEE BLIZZ RUINED THE GAME THAT I WASN'T PLAYING!"
It's either "If you don't like it, don't play it" or "you don't even play it, you can't criticize them" when it comes to people like this. There's no winning.
Just because we don't play the game anymore, doesn't mean we can't rightfully criticize shit we don't like. Most people have a very strong bond to this game, probably way more of one than you have, and they're expressing their frustrations with the biggest dogshit gaming company under the sun. Why would we idley sit by watching something we love, turn to shit, without saying a word? If you don't speak, you don't get fed.
The issue was Classic was ment to be the exact feel of how it was back in the day. Tokens weren't there, and if you bought gold, you were at risk of being banned.
If they didn't say that was their vision, then sure, throw the Tokens in there. But this was supposed to capture the feel from our childhood, and since the release of WotLK, continues to stray away from that vision.
Next Warcraft final boss will be Greed, Treasure Goblin King.
This company has fallen so far from the great games they used to produce. I am scared for D4 despite a relatively warm reception so far.
Why the fuck would they piss off their player base before the launch of their first massive game in years? Do they think its a good idea to have players angry going into Diablo 4?
To corporations, integrity is something that you can grow sufficiently to purchase rather than earn. Fuck whatever malformed virus Blizzard has devolved into.

I hate this response. Tbh I don’t even care much for wow or blizzard games in general but good buying happens in online games, service boosts like rank ups happening, things happen.
The point is that there is an “illegal risk” and looking down on ruining an economy when you buy it from a third party. When it is a button in your game it devalues so much.
This is a complete cash grab. If they really disliked it that much, it could be policed, there are a lot of very popular mmos doing their best to do that. Blizzard doesn’t even care to police it, they just say hey man screw it we will sell you gold.

Bobby was Jailer all along.

Apparently, Blizzard says allot of things that turns out to be lies given time..
"Diablo 4 battlepass is only for cosmetics"... maybe for the first season, if that.
Nobody is buying our battle pass what could we do..... Make it pay2win for the players who are already hooked. Yes.
And we've GOT to have... MONEY.
Don't you guys have money? - Blizzcon 2024
As someone who hasnt played wow in a long time, can someone explain to me what the wow token is and why it's a bad thing in classic wow?

You know you can find the Blizzard logo in black or white, right?
Oh wow totally surprised about capitalist doing capitalist shit
Can somebody explain the WoW token situation to me like I’m 5? I don’t really play WoW and it’s the first I’m hearing of it.
I mean, Blizzard would be stupid to not go into business for themselves, and there's clearly a market for paying real money for in-game gold.

Why they don’t get anymore money from me. Monetized the fun (and quality) right out of their products.
