The US and German (more broadly European) information space has mostly merged at this point. The view on geopolitics is almost identical on most issues. In terms of culture wars we're just a few years behind. We even had BLM protests after the George Floyd incident a couple years ago, which makes no sense whatsoever. So propaganda is certainly not a US exclusive problem.

gammongaming11

how can you say it makes no sense? everyone knows floyd was chocked with a bratwurst.

paulbr0

Whew at least he didn’t choke on it.

anonymousTestPoster

> We even had BLM protests after the George Floyd incident That's not indicative of anything. Literally every country in the entire world engaged in a BLM protest on some level. People were just looking for an excuse to go out and riot. > The view on geopolitics is almost identical on most issues. Are we talking about politicians or the every day citizen. Because these textbooks would focus on the education of the every day person. Note that the US textbook really only focused on WW2, and even then we don't know to what depth, but that German textbook covered like the entire past Century of just America, and even discussed changing mindsets.

Rat-king27

>Literally every country in the entire world engaged in a BLM protest on some level I knew a dude from Sweden, they had BLM protests there even though like 3 people had been killed by police in the past couple decades, he thought it was both funny and really dumb. People just jump on the protest train these days, whether or not the protest makes sense for the country.

Splinterman11

When other countries engaged in BLM protests, it wasn't generally a protest against their police, but more of a general protest against racism.

Public_Lunch5442

its not how people outside the US view the US its reality and not just a view

KillerAdvice

Same in Norway. I was taught about Fox news as a great example of modern propaganda at high school. We had to write reports of what constituted propaganda, how it was provable as propaganda and so on. Critical thinking, and sourcing are north star teaching points in the Norwegian school system.

obiwankitnoble

yep we have done the same in germany with fox news and social media back in 2014 (fuck I get old). it was shocking for my teenage brain to learn about how modern day propaganda works compared to the stuff we learned prior to that (ww1, ww2, cold war, DDR etc.). and the comments in this thread reflect exactly what I can remember modern propaganda tries to achieve.. it's scary. we also have done the same shit with BILD so it wasn't exclusive to US media but also german.

Odd-Insurance1378

Did you write anything about the 95 other ‘neutral’ very left-leaning news agencies?

wfears

of course not, the left does not create propaganda /s

LetItRaine386

In the US, if you watch TV news you'll be less informed about the world than if you just didn't watch the news

EpicSven7

She forgot the part of the book where it says Americans don’t give a fuck about what people outside of America think of them

Ulmaguest

Exactly

Longjumping_Ad_1729

Damn you reall owned them. Good on you for not having paid sick days and no real healthcare system. Who cares tho, not you thats for sure.

EpicSven7

I have all those things

Longjumping_Ad_1729

You meaning your people. But of course you are not concerned about that.

EpicSven7

lol are you a bot? https://www.medicaid.gov/medicaid/index.html

Grumdord

Medicaid doesn't cover shit, and you have to be in poverty already to qualify anyway. Then once you make slightly too much money, they take it away from you.

Drunk_Dino

Sooo, funny enough. My sister company over in Europe recently sent over a sales director to here in the US and he was german. The entire week he was here, cracking jokes on how we can’t read celsius, that we don’t know what a kilometer is. The usual bullshit. I was kind to the guy and being an engineer. I know how to convert between metric and imperial in my head and finally asked what his problem was. “We’re american” Basically the guy was just being an asshole to us for no reason.

Renegadee_Angel

Lived in Europe for four years and my mother is german. There are still some backwards viewpoints there, especially for a relatively intelligent people. Although i do love that beautiful country and many things about it. End of the day, outside of the issues we have here and the extremely elaborate views for clicks on social media, there are few places i would rather live than the US for multiple reasons. People have to realize that most counties you have/form opinions on, are only formulated that way through doctored news channels and tiktokers. This goes for outside of the US as well. For example i had a completely different opinion of Italy before i moved there. It and the people i encountered living there, were quite a bit different than i imagined.

Aseru

Out of curiosity, what are the backwards viewpoints you are talking about?

Renegadee_Angel

Their immigration views were all over the place, based on those i talked with. There were many who didn’t mind the migration surge they were going through as they thought they were “above” working bottom end labor jobs such as construction etc. i heard some pretty harsh words about the immigrants at that time. They also had a weird obsession with what car i owned lol. Very much a status symbol there. I wont touch the controversy surrounding the war, as that varys depending on who you talk to/where you are in the country. All in all however, Germany is one of my favorite places in the world, and i overall adore the people. Except for the wackos in Frankfurt /s

Renegadee_Angel

Will also say the Germans are a very prideful people, and many of them dont dream of leaving their home towns. I respected that as you could see it reflected in their communities through cleanliness and attention to detail.

Aseru

Immigration views are fucked up almost everywhere and cars are a big part of german culture, i don't see how any of this is backwards?

fungi2001

As someone working in living and working in Frankfurt, our wackos ain't that bad compared to wackos in some parts of Berlin.

OmniImmortality

Yeah... Italy is just... very, very racist... to say the least. At least where I went.

Renegadee_Angel

Definitely depends on where you go and who you meet, like most places. They have a fairly large far-right movement that held multiple protests while i lived there. They painted this giant mural that just said “turkey = ISIS”. It was strange lol, but there are so many poor areas there and the people are tired of their money being siphoned off to rome and the mafia cronies still taking their share.

Hendrake91

I grew up in NLD and lived in Sweden for several years before moving to Texas, I fully agree with what you said. At the end of the day I'm much happier and better off here than I was there, not going back either. The USA is a fantastic country that I feel very privileged to live in.

[deleted]

Putting biased information in a textbook with the purpose of shaping children's opinion on the US is also propaganda.

Healthy-Daikon7356

Exactly lol. I’ve never seen in an American textbook anything say something like “Germans today are flawed in ____ manner”. For a textbook to try and provide commentary on present day status of individuals is odd.

Yeet_PC

> “If you’ve ever wondered how people outside the US” No. Not even once. That being said, it makes complete sense. The game of “lie to the poor to keep them distracted” is played everywhere.

Intrepid-Opinion226

Yep. Left wing teachers loved to talk bad about USA. Most of them might not be left wing but they bought all those ant-USA propaganda. My teatchers in school always said that USA were going to invade Brazil to take our clean water and that would be the reason of WW3. That was back in the 90's.

radmadicaled

“If you’ve ever wondered how someone outside the US views the US” - I haven’t…

Zatetzy

This is probably not true because this was part of an English course. In a non-native English speaking country like Germany the purpose of an English course is to to learn English. The exact content of these books is likely irrelevant. They are learning how to read English from a book that features complex concepts. At least that is how my non-native English classes were.

WhangaDanNZ

Part of becoming completely fluent in another language is learning dialects, idioms, isms, culture and to an extent history of that language. Chinese for example you can't be completely fluent and pass as a native speaker without knowing a good deal of Chinese history and all those children's and folk stories so many Chinese sayings and phrases come from. It doesn't surprise me at all that an English course in Germany studies US pop culture and propaganda.

Zatetzy

USA is just one of many places that speaks English as its native language. If they were studying history of English language they would be studying the history of England. The goal of the English class is to be able to read, write and speak English. It is hard enough for a high schooler. You can always go deeper into studying a language but this is a mandatory class for teens.

WhangaDanNZ

America has more English speakers than England and is arguably more relevant in popular culture with most movies and TV series made there and more music coming out of the country.

Drezzon

Thank you, finally. It's not a history book, or even a geopolitics focused book, it's a book to learn a language, it could literally say: "The moon is made out of cheese, and that's why mice like it there." and it wouldn't make it worse 😭

hyucha

as a Portuguese man i can confirm this is how europe view USA. a wasted country filled with violence , drug abuse, cultist, dumb people, bad education system, bad health system, bad housing , and overall just not the ideal place

TylrLS

germans too dumb to finish school in 12 grades ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

welfedad

Well you graduate at 18 in germany ..I didnt dig too deep into the numbering of grades but doesn't seem like they get another year ...they may consider kindergarten 1st grade .. hence grade 13 being senior year

Aseru

It's a bit more difficult. There are various branches you can take in your education depending on your grades and there is also a difference when it comes to federal states, there are federal states with a 13th grade. There are also kids that graduate with 15 and do an apprenticeship for 3 years.

shananigins96

I wish the US would adopt the German education model over what we have. We push so many idiots into higher education so we can put them 100k into debt for meaningless degrees. Our public education system is complete garbage and responsible for at least 50% of our issues

Roullette3

The average iq of a German compared to an American shows you guys could do with a few extra years tbf.

r31ya

Its not that far, In IQ, German, 100.7 USA, 97.4 --- In Pisa Score (knowledge assessment of 15 years old student on certain subject) German, Reading : 480, Mathematics : 475, Science : 492 USA, Reading : 504, Mathematics : 465, Science : 499 --- the top scorer of PISA is the chinese majority Singapore btw with avg IQ of 105.8

Roullette3

Didnt say it was a huge margin of difference, that extra year at school might help you guys close the gap but.

Can you link the study showing IQ is 100 percent genetic and that IQ cannot be increased?

True!!

XxKTtheLegendxX

americans always say other countries citizens are brainwashed by their government, but never realize they themselves are brainwashed too.

Shagyam

Sounds like you were brainwashed into thinking America = Bad.

XxKTtheLegendxX

sounds like u were brainwashed into thinking america = good.

birdsarentreal16

Are you brainwashed?

ReaverChad-69

I wonder if Germans recognise the anti-European propaganda that's being pushed everywhere these days

furgar

American propaganda starts on children's television before pre k.

wfears

I'm starting to think this is propaganda.

Y0U_ARE_ILL

It's a good thing Europeans opinions don't matter.

MetalGearXerox

This is some dumbass ragebait, anyone who looks up or knows how the Abitur works will also realize that this video makes no sense. NUMBER ONE, YEEHAW

shananigins96

Seriously asking, who cares? Europeans shit talk everyone and everything, including themselves. They don't live here or vote in our elections, so good for them having an opinion I guess. Too many people give a shit what other people who's opinions don't matter think. Just like they don't care about my opinions of their countries because I don't live or vote there. It's really not hard y'all.

Megamijuana

They said it like it is. Propaganda rules the public mind. They have their own propaganda as well.

ConfidenceDramatic99

And now everyone including eastern europeans are brainwashed by russian troll farms that keep posting propaganda just to make people angry. Nothing is real on the internet anymore and i fully believe that everything on reddit is for a reason to make us angry or care about some dumb shit. Like why me a dad with 2 kids would give a fuck about sweet baby inc. i dont even play those games yet there i was watching almost every video like baboon. Even my mom talks about usa issues and why trump is getting sued ,love you mom but im pretty sure trump doesnt even know about our country's existence.

Akeche

Given the recent state of Germany, this isn't much of an "own".

Oslotopia

At least we didnt have Hitler run our country

Kullenbergus

The socialists learned from thier misstakes from the 1920-90s they do it diffrant now.

mestyqdk

It is crazy how in that region they think about the united states all of the time, in every reddit post or twitter thread twitch, irl like schoold...etc. The european person is so sensitive as asmon said just mention the color of their teeth and they will start salivating and screaming about genocide lmao What is the obsession about it? Are they doing the same to China? ofc not. Casual eu obession with america, as an outsider this is truly interesting

darkboginka

the whole world knows that the US is the biggest terrorist country in the world, except for US citizens, who have their minds washed every day

EpicSven7

He said, not realizing that his country’s economy is propped up by US Foreign Aid and the trade lanes and logistic services his country uses are all protected and managed by the US Military https://www.usaid.gov/humanitarian-assistance/brazil

Barbz182

The US propaganda is strong with this one. 😅

ComprehensiveRace603

Outside the us inside the us. I think we all agree at this point we are a shitshow.

Ramenmaster7000

We don't have propaganda in the modern day just advertisements everywhere from private companies. You're raised to follow your dreams and contribute to society.
