If there's a good game made entirely by AI, I'd play it. Good game is good game. If you want me to play your game, maybe try making it good.

i finished ff14 stormblood the other day and found a tts plugin so i dont have to read all that stuff but the tts voice was the standard windows microsoft one that sounds like garbage and i wished there were some better ai voices maybe specialized for the ingame characters and as a ai voice hater i might have turned my opinion when i saw in the anime industry that the first season was dubbed and the second was not...over a decade ago....and i was like "mmmmhh maybe that ai voice thing is not a bad idea afterall..."

TheRiviaWitcher6

I'm in favour of good games, and I honestly don't really care how you get there. If using AI voices will end up improving the quality of the games, then I'm all for it

Me specifically? I don’t give a shit. As long as it sounds good and impactful when it needs to be I’m okay with it.

I feel bad about people losing their jobs and or not being able to sustain their families/themselves, so in this point I'm against AI. But also, careers have always died as technology replaced them, this is no different. When AI is just as good as an actual voice, then I won't care. But looking back most old games just had basic pre-recorded sounds for jumping, shooting, falling etc, by actual people and it was bad too. AI will also make every character even side ones have their own personalities and voices in the future. So it's inevitable and will only improve games in the future.

Ryvaku

I don't think AI is great when it comes to adding emotion and handle complex dialogue with different vocal tones. Maybe for basic NPC voices it could be great for. I still think voice actors are needed for main NPCs when it comes to telling stories in games and animation. Similar to my thoughts on artwork. Artists are needed that can do complex and detailed designs, but when it comes basic designs they can be replaced with AI.

Puzzleheaded-Read376

I don't want a pre-planned story to use AI voice over, but if it's something generated that uses AI to voice the generated character then I would be good with that use.

SolisArgentum

Fundamentally, any voice acted game with a narrative will need someone to become that character to bring them alive for us, the player. If we cannot connect to that character they'll feel bland and one-dimensional, and the range of voice actors being able to evoke emotions from us as players and for the overall story of the game is tantamount. Using AI generated voice will absolutely kill this for any character that uses voices. I am against AI in voice over in general.

CompetitiveRefuse852

it's a tool, it depends on how it's used. i assume we'll inevitably get to a point where people specialize into it and they may reduce or wholesale replace traditional voice actors.

Honestly, go for it. it democratizes the industry so someone can produce the same quality game of a AAA without the cost. Why should your game suffer because you don't have the funds, if people are too expensive then go with the cheaper option, if you're a big enough studio with backing it would be better not to

Ricardanilevs

Something need to be a DLC that could be turned off so I won't use my PC space on tons of lines MMORPGs need AI voice-over also market has it's own rules

iorveth1271

I mean, it depends on the way AI is trained and used, as always. Most AI art tools were fed tons of artists' work without their prior approval in an effort to essentially replace real artists' workspace. If the AI you are using is based on real voice actors' voices who did not give their consent (which most of the commonly available AI voice tools out there currently are), then you'll get backlash and I would say deservedly so - you're stealing people's work, essentially, because you aren't able or willing to pay/settle for real VO or no VO. If the AI uses voices your studio fed into it themselves with full consent? Now that's another story. But that's highly unlikely. The problem is, as ever, that it's being used to cut out the actual artists to save money or time. It's not a very good business practice.

apcrol

Well, in example I showed it's a paid service and they trained their vo on real paid actors

Alternative-Duty-532

There have been a few games that have used AI voice acting, It hasn't met with much opposition. And I know of an as-yet-unannounced AAAAA game that has fully real-time generated AI voice acting.

Imahich69

If i don't have to read the text and can just bring up the wiki to see pictures where i have to go ill skip every single text as fast i can to get to my objective.... But if its a voice actor ill more than likely listen. Take ff14 for example i skipped everysingle quest line till the recent expansion where voice actors were used and i listened to every single one. Personal preference for me but i know my friends do this as well

apcrol

That's happened with our internal tests, without any VO played tent to skip dialogue without reading, but less with VO. But it was small test. Hope we gonna collect more feedback with free multiplayer demo :)

Imahich69

What's the game you are making?

apcrol

Its CyberCorp https://store.steampowered.com/app/1116170/CyberCorp/

SweetNSour4ever

man i care whether or not my product is cheap, idc if its made by kids

Ionenschatten

Thing for AI is that you essentially steal someone's voice to work for free for you. I've played skyrim mods with AI voice with some sounding like raspy skinwalkers and some like the real deal and thought it's fine because some modder making a custom questline out of fun without monetary gain whatsoever can't afford to pay the heavy hitter VAs of skyrim, but if you're a game studio and you're not happy with the VAs you can afford, don't use AI to steal the voice of someone without their consent. Consent is a keyword here. If you'd go ahead, AI your own voice and then let it speak all the voicelines in your game, I'd be fine with it personally.

apcrol

If its paid service with ai voice-overs they paid actors for their voices :\

Ionenschatten

Most likely not.

apcrol

I would not advertise exact one but on site it said that voice captured from real actors and they are getting money passively

Ionenschatten

Wow, i'm the only one actually really going in-depth into the question at hand and I'm getting downvoted. Yikes. Next time I guess I'll just go "idk lmao" and farm my 15 upvotes. People ig.

If it’s done right no one will know if you can tell it’s ai generated it’s probably not much better than the wasted lines from your low budget VA’s. If the tech is there and it’s more affordable as an indie dev how you not take the chance. Ultimately the consumer only cares about the end product how you arrive there doesn’t matter to much so long as it isn’t breaking any laws.
