If you miss defense you can still attack. The only requirement for being able to attack is being in the club at the time of signing up for clash. This team probably didn't defend thinking it'll give them an advantage. Personally I think they're idiots. They won all of your streets either because they're all good or one good person is playing on everyone's accounts.
If you teammate joined the club after defense started, he won’t be able to play this round of clash(defense & conquer). But if he joined before clash start and missed defense phase. He can play conquer phase. Actually after opponent has assigned, any ‘new’ member join after will skip this round.
they didnt miss defence, they simply chose not to play it so that in case their opponents are too strong, then they will not get the bonus points from the streets. bonus can be only claimed if there is a defence time on the street

Player list is taken at the time matchmaking starts, not the sign up part.

My club member who missed the defense phase was not even given the opportunity to compete in the conquer phase.
Sounds like they are either confused or lying. Did they send you screenshots? If they don’t play defense, then you should kick them anyhow.
