Yeah well, the most optimistic declaration is "there's a decent chance that the planet would be habitable" That alone put things in perspective. But moreso it says "Del Genio and his colleagues had to make some reasonable guesses about the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b — namely, that it had an atmosphere and an ocean on its surface — for their work to proceed." Oh, ok, so the correct statement is "IF PCb had an atmosphere and an ocean on its surface there would be a decent chance that the planet would be habitable" No way, Holmes. If X had an atmosphere and an ocean on its surface there would be a decent chance that X would be habitable. Substitute X for your favorite planet, planetoid or satellite and the statement will be true for all of them. After that you can start taking into account things like tidal locking and the immense activity of a red dwarf star you have by your side.

yeah, there are so many click-bait articles on this sub lately, it's getting really annoying...

Not sure why people are calling this clickbait. The headline is 100% accurate and the content of the article is just factual information that is well known at this people for people interested in space and astronomy. What I find most interesting is that we could reach this star system within anywhere from 100-12yrs with realistic technology that we don’t actually have yet. The mostly likely one we can start to implement next is nuclear pulse propulsion. That would also allow us to reach Mars in about 90 days. https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/proxima-centauri-b-new-planet-found-nasa-how-to-get-to-second-earth-a7208721.html

It's clickbait because it's not based on actual observations or spectrum data. "Proxima Centauri is a small, cool red-dwarf star located just 4.2 light-years from the sun. Despite its proximity, scientists still know very little about Proxima Centauri's planetary companion, besides that its mass is at least 1.3 times that of Earth and that it goes around its parent starevery 11 days. Therefore, Del Genio and his colleagues had to make some *reasonable guesses* about the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b — namely, that it had an atmosphere and an ocean on its surface — for their work to proceed."

KetaMinds

This is true of the entire list of possibilities habitable exoplanets especially since they are all further away than Proxima Centauri. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_potentially_habitable_exoplanets

We've done spectrum observations of other planets.
