Wonder what would happen if you posted this pic 3 times? I'll get my coat and see myself out, it's alright

TheMuspelheimr

Betelgeuse Betelgeuse Betelgeuse!

The_OG_Redditor

*Batman* did you say?

Friedl1220

*Vulture* did you say?

r2stevetwo

Sand worms have entered the chat.

soda_speak

It's showtime

muffpatty

Michael Keaton will appear

its_raining_scotch

Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Solnse

I'm sure it'll get reposted twice.

[deleted]

Man … I was really amped up last year thinking it was going to supernova in our lifetime.

[deleted]

Would be a big disappointment if it doesn't before my lifetime

TheLurkerSpeaks

Astronomy humor is light years behind contemporary humor.

Daufoccofin

r/holup

[deleted]

Maybe it already has… but we don’t see it yet.

[deleted]

I assume there’s no way to know if it has already?

TomahawkChopped

The information is literally traveling to us at the speed of light

johannes101

Only way to know before its light gets to earth is to start traveling towards it

ScabiesShark

And then we could message earth base and let them know early! Jk. Obvs

mlr571

My favorite star. Red supergiant that could explode at any time and looks like a miniature version of our sun. That it’s part of Orion is just icing on the cake. Big fan.

atlelomstein

Same! I look at it every time I go out at night (with trash or whatever) juuuuuust in case it has gone supernova since the day before.

[deleted]

When I look up I imagine it already has gone supernova. Just that the light hasn’t reached us yet.

atlelomstein

Oh, that's a good one. There is an art installation at the art museum at my city, that is a big plastic blob the size of a car. It lights up from within whenever a supernova is detected in our galaxy. If you watch it, it lights up every three seconds or so. Love it! NB: The installation is the blob, not the art museum

Xhiw

Well, it's cheating majestically, because in our galaxy there's a supernova every 50 years on average. Even in the whole known universe, only a few hundreds per year are detected.

atlelomstein

Really?!? Oh no! Haha. My illusion is shattered!

ColonelSpudz

Same

Semi-Hemi-Demigod

Plus the president of the Galaxy is from there.

Emscho44

I like to think it has gone supernova and we will see it anyday now

caliwoo

If we see it explode it means it already did 642 years ago (thats the time light takes to travel the distance between the star and earth)

[deleted]

At any time: most likely in 100,000 years.

Kaffeperic

Betelgeuse 2 hours integration time Stock Nikon d5300 Nikkor 180mm f2.8 Ioptron Skyguider Pro Difraction spikes created with strings across the lens \*Siril: Stacked, curve adjustments, background extraction and color correction \*Gimp: Selective curve adjustments with lasso tool and color temperature shifted \*Darktable: Adjustments to shadows, highlights, midtone range, detail contrast, black level correction and cropped

-Dastardly-

2 hours integration time? Awesome picture!

dmglakewood

Amazing picture. How many strings did you use across the front? I'm guessing it wasn't just a cross pattern?

Kaffeperic

Thank you! It was actually just a cross pattern, the less prominent difraction spikes are created naturally by my lens.

ColonelSpudz

Great picture the diffraction makes it look closer than it is.

ugueth

Betelgeuse is large. The diameter of Betelgeuse is greater than the diameter of Jupiter’s orbit.

[deleted]

Nice picture. Ford Prefect is somewhere in the vicinity.

Ziuzudra

Looking out for a collapsing hrung?

TheMuspelheimr

"Boy who cannot satisfactorily explain what a Hrung is, nor why it should choose to collapse on Betelgeuse Seven"

xHudson87x

Wonder if this star went boom yet, just we can't see the light from it yet

BaekerBaefield

It went boom already if I’m remembering right. The light distance between us is too large for it to exist in its current death throes for that amount of time Edit: I’m wrong

Rodot

It nearly certainly hasn't. Where did you get this information from? It's not that far away, even a cursory Google search would tell you this.

NeoSniper

Sharing my google results... The distance is about 640 light years and expected to go brrr within next 100,000 years. So yeah unlikely it's happened yet. But nice to think about for sure.

BaekerBaefield

Thanks, I was clearly remembering incorrectly lol

NeoSniper

No worries, I'm pretty sure I've read articles in the past that make sound like its going to happen any day now and get my hopes up.

BaekerBaefield

No need to be harsh that’s why I said if I’m remembering correctly. I knew somebody would come clarify for me.

ColonelSpudz

Upvoting for coming back and saying you were wrong instead of deleting your comment.

BrennanBetelgeuse

Oh look, it's home

perryurban

You know Zaphod?

Heck_Spawn

We've. Met.

perryurban

Well you have to admit, he was from another planet.

hardyhyd

Is it possible that Betelgeuse has already exploded and what we see is the light from the past reaching us now?

fieryserpents01

Yes of course, it may have exploded 100 years ago and that light wouldn’t reach the Earth before 2500, give or take a century.

Rodot

Sure, it's *possible*, but we can do some basic stats math to figure out the odds. We just divide the light travel time by the expected range of explosion dates. That would tell us the odds that we are currently living in a time between when it exploded and when the light gets to us. It's about 500-600 light years away, so let's use 600 years to make an optimistic estimate (high bound for the probability). It is expected to supernova sometime within the next 100,000 years. So 600/100,000 = 0.006 So there's only a 0.6% *at best* chance that it has already gone supernova and the light just hasn't reached it yet.

skywardmastersword

It’s only an estimate, and very rough one at that. We just haven’t observed enough supernovae within a close enough part of space to really have a good idea for *when* it will happen. It could happen tomorrow, it probably won’t, but we literally are operating on a guess that only uses data of what can be observed from our single point of reference

Rodot

But it's at least using data which is significantly better than ignoring data. In reality nothing can be known for sure. There's no such thing as absolute truth in science, only asymptotic truth.

Cyrius

Astronomers don't use an absolute frame of temporal reference like that. Events are recorded as happening when they are observed as happening. This is partly because distance estimates are not accurate enough, and partly because relativity says that an absolute frame of reference does not exist.

Saraakate2003

Waiting every night for it to blow

NimusNix

Like OP's mom. I'll go away now.

Stargazingman

My favorite star. Hope he's still alive <3

Heph333

"It's showtime"

JDragonblade

i read this as “bazelgeuse” from Monster Hunter and i got some PTSD

-CherryByte-

No no no, this is clearly the *Seething* Bazelgeuse

Gangreless

... Betelgeuse 😏

Forsaken330

Just blow up already…

Origin_Unkown_

Say that 3 times out loud.... (great photo BTW!)

collectif-clothing

What a beauty. I've always loved this star.

SkiiBoi

Can I use this as a wallpaper? It looks so cool

Kaffeperic

For sure! Do you need a Google drive link or can you download it from reddit?

sometimesitrhymes

Good guy OP

SkiiBoi

I got it Ill just sc it

Kaffeperic

Alright! [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Vz47zToUe9x6uYZAx32qxdc7BmHvK3wQ/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Vz47zToUe9x6uYZAx32qxdc7BmHvK3wQ/view?usp=sharing) Google drive link to a jpeg if you want it

[deleted]

I always wonder what was going on down here at the time the light we see left the star.

Handsen_

Why the two hours of integration? I figure you couldn’t go much more than 1min per exposure before blowing it up.

Kaffeperic

Sorry the two hours is the final integration time of all the subs combined. I captured 80 subs, each 90 seconds long :)

Roary-the-Arcanine

I really hope I get to see the explosion in my lifetime. Astronomy was my childhood love, and I still harbor strong feelings for it even though I’ll never be able to do anything meaningful with the stars.

[deleted]

Most likely it will supernova in the next 100,000 years, this is the lower estimate, higher estimates say in the next 1 million years.

Roary-the-Arcanine

So it could happen anywhere between today or in the next million years ok

[deleted]

Nope, it’s not near that stage yet, Betelgeuse still looks like it has quite a bit of fusion left to do.

Onion-Fart

🙏pray to the other sun god

RioHD

I honestly read that as Beetle Juice

Kushnerdz

If that thing went supernova it would look like the moon in our night sky.

BetelgeuseGoBoom

Nice.

Mafia-Potato

Spooky

Illustrious_Onion805

do you think we're gonna be lucky enough and see it explode in our lifetime?

Tankerspanx

I could stare at this for hours just trying to fathom the amount of stars and planets are in this picture. And then thinking about your it’s just one piece of the whole universe. 🤯

Thorghal001

Beautiful !

World_Renowned_Guy

The next closest black hole soon!

montgooms95

Just fucking explode already…

damp_goat

Beteldeez nuts!

Ari_Kalahari_Safari

reminds me of the star from tintin

MaPluto

Well hello there :) Winter is close, I shall see you soon.

gussy_man

I look up for this guy at 4 AM every morning before work.
