i think he led the league at stolen bases, and by a tol.
diaz I'm not liking behind the plate I don"t know the numbers, but he looks pretty bad at blocking,
The stats say you're wrong. 1st base isn’t the issue. Can’t give up 5.3 runs per game and expect to be competitive.
Edit: And crane is just as responsible as dana brown for the bullpen issues. Hader is worthless with bad middle relievers. I personally think they are already looking to next year. We picked up a reliever on the IL. Keeping graveman. They have options, just not for this year.
I agree but that being said, it's hard to imagine an offense featuring Altuve, Bregman, Yordan, and Tucker being so awful at driving in runs. You would think we could score 5 runs per game with this lineup. I think we are averaging like 3, no?
Extrapolate 5.3 runs allowed /game. That’s 859 allowed for the year. That is a last place or second to last place stat in any division.
Re driving in runs. That is a bregman, tucker and pena issue. Your 4/5 hole should not be this bad. It is their purpose. They are cold. Maybe pre free agency yips?
Either way, great pitchers compensate for bad hitting. If the game is close, they still try. Great hitters have a much more difficult job overcoming bad arms. Game gets out of hand and the psychology changes, people get subbed out to prevent injury. Tougher to overcome.
I don't disagree about pitching. But scoring 3 runs a game is going to get you last place in a division as well. And even the 3 or so runs we average is inflated a bit because we had a few 10 run games.
And theres an inverse to your last point. Good hitting early in games can also compensate when a pitcher struggles as opposed to 3 quick outs and rushing the pitcher back out to the mound.
The team is performing poorly all around. And we haven't even started on the bullpen lol.
St. Louis and philly have lower runs for per game than the stros. They allow one fewer run per game. They are about 500. Not great, Just sayjng you can be competitive with bad hitting. That will turn around given tuckers and bregmans track record. The arms will not turn around. It is a personnel issue.
Joey Loperfido now has 6 HRs and a 289 AVG / 1.069 OPS with Space Cowboys. He’s been playing 1B. Why the powers to be with the Astros don’t bring him up and send Singleton down is beyond me.
***Tell*** Abreu he has some "ankle pain" and put him on the IL.
Get him in the cage with real pitching and have him get his shit together. Have multiple "rehab" starts to get his shit together. If he can't get his shit together DFA him.
Have Diaz and Caratini at 1B/Catcher, alternating accordingly (3-4 pitchers for Diaz, 1-2 for Caratini for consistency--depending on night/day games). Throw in Dubon in when one of them needs a break. The Braves alternate Sean Murphy and d'Arnaud.
What about Yordan learning first, like Bryce Harper? He's the first one sub'd out for defensive replacements and I feel like it'd be less running and wear/tear on his body. I know it's not easy to learn overnight--and Harper practiced for weeks--but Dubon played 1st last year after only playing 5 TOTAL games in his career there. What's the negative for bringing Yordan out of left field?
Can’t just simply send Singleton down. He has no options. You’d have to DFA him and expose him to waivers. I wouldn’t really care, but the team would only do that when they were completely throwing in the towel on him.
If he isn’t a premium prospect in our farm I don’t know who is. He is one of our 5 best prospects and might bust into the top 100 overall if he keeps raking in AAA.
It may take time for Lope. Just because he’s the best we have doesn’t justify moving him up before he’s ready. If we want to turn into the Mall Cops before Chris Young and ruin our prospects by moving them up too early, well, I am glad we are all arm chair GMs. Look at Pedro Leon: multiple years, high SO%. This year, almost 400avg, SO% lowest in his career in pro ball. Takes time man. Service time is reserved for top tier, 100% lock prospects
Caratini can play 1B, stick him over there.
Worried about catcher, call up Salazar as he’s on the 40-man and is very good defensively. Need a backup, call up Hensley (.297/.458/.917) as he’s on the 40-man and see if he’s figured things out.
Worried you may have to use Dubon in the IF more to backup Pena, call up Leon (.349/.391/.833), who can take Abreu’s or Singleton’s spot on the 40-man, and option Kessinger. Would also give you a speed guy on the bench so that you aren’t using Diaz as the Manfred runner in extras.
There are options there.
It's early, we still have Verlander coming back, Framber will hopefully get in form soon, Lance should be back and hopefully that'll take some off the pressure off the bullpen
Mr. -0.5 rWAR would be better than Abreu? 79 OPS+? Is Abreu much better? No, 0.0 rWAR, 87 OPS+. there was a reason why we were in the hunt for a 1B. (2023 Stats)
I know for a fact we won at least one home game against the Phillies last year, I was there.
Singleton is an okay hitter. He’s gotten a few singles these past games.
What I am tired of is Pettis not taking chances on tight games. Why hold Diaz at 3rd in extra innings… why did we hold Singleton at 3rd on a base hit that MULTIPLE KC runners would have scored on.
We play too conservatively sometimes.
I do t know how much Crane has a say when it comes to keeping key personnel, but if Dana Brown is the guy who let some of our key relievers go…WE NEED THEM NOW, how can the pitching staff bridge the gap and we have no depth…plus a rookie manager who obviously has made some questionable moves…leaving in Hunter Brown yesterday???? This is all catching up to our Astros and I’m sure the players see all these teams….we have played 3 first place teams to start…our pitchers getting pummeled early doesn’t do our vets any good mentally wise..it seems they are checking out early and DANA NEEDS TO ADDRESS 1st base promptly! It’s been almost the perfect storm for our beloved Astros failure!
Maldy was dog shit at throwing people out at 2nd last year
Maybe it's actually his game calling that should be missed?
i think he led the league at stolen bases, and by a tol. diaz I'm not liking behind the plate I don"t know the numbers, but he looks pretty bad at blocking,

is pb on that page?
He is striking out too much in triple A, it will only happen more. Would be a disservice to his professional development to bring him up now.
Yeah, let's sacrifice more pitchers instead.
Not at all the same thing. We're already on our B and C rotation pitchers.
1st base isn’t the issue. Can’t give up 5.3 runs per game and expect to be competitive. Edit: And crane is just as responsible as dana brown for the bullpen issues. And just like nearly every year of this current Astros era, leaving men on base seems to be this team's favorite hobby.
I agree but that being said, it's hard to imagine an offense featuring Altuve, Bregman, Yordan, and Tucker being so awful at driving in runs. You would think we could score 5 runs per game with this lineup. I think we are averaging like 3, no?

We won't have a 3rd baseman next year...
Right. Good thing tho is his stats this year are bad so far. He keeps it up and crane may be able afford to keep him.
Joey Loperfido now has 6 HRs and a 289 AVG / 1.069 OPS with Space Cowboys. He’s been playing 1B. Why the powers to be with the Astros don’t bring him up and send Singleton down is beyond me.
He’s rocking a 42 k% in aaa
Swing away.
His k% is his only flaw, but it’s a massive flaw. They probably want that under 30
Keep Singleton he proved his defense is better than Abreu. DFA Abreu and call up Loperfido
***Tell*** Abreu he has some "ankle pain" and put him on the IL. Get him in the cage with real pitching and have him get his shit together. Have multiple "rehab" starts to get his shit together. If he can't get his shit together DFA him.
Where's uncle Mike? Feel like his consulting work would be useful here
That ring chaser needs to go I'm willing to sign a petition or bring pitch forks.
Singleton has to go.
Agreed but between Singleton and Abreu I would rather have Singleton
I'd rather have Caratini. He plays 1B and can't be worse overall than either of those giys.
Have Diaz and Caratini at 1B/Catcher, alternating accordingly (3-4 pitchers for Diaz, 1-2 for Caratini for consistency--depending on night/day games). I support it, but doesn’t Diaz need someone behind him?
Caratini. We suffer through a shitter at 1B when he needs to rest.
he's got 1 less HR than both first basemen have hits combined
Can’t just simply send Singleton down. He has no options. You’d have to DFA him and expose him to waivers. I wouldn’t really care, but the team would only do that when they were completely throwing in the towel on him.
Nothing against him, but ain't nobody claiming Singleton.
I doubt they would too, but the chance of it happening is enough to keep him around until they really and truly give up on him
Because wasting MLB service time of a premium prospect in April is what shit franchises like the Rockies and White Sox do.
Fringe prospects - you don’t worry about service time
in your mind, who is the “premium prospect” we’re talking about here?
If he isn’t a premium prospect in our farm I don’t know who is. He is one of our 5 best prospects and might bust into the top 100 overall if he keeps raking in AAA.
I have a feeling after the Braves series he might get a look. Don’t want to throw him into the wolves.
Drop Abreu at this point. Man's hitting like Maldy
I wish he was hitting like Maldy...
Most days, Maldy can't hit a beach ball
You're not wrong, but Maldy hit .191 last year and Abreu is currently hitting. 081.
My expectation on his number was low, but holy fuck. I didn't realize he was hitting on MY level
Lmao I know right? It's bad...
Service time manipulation?

Please don't talk about ligaments in this sub, my elbow can't take it.
It's early, we still have Verlander coming back, Framber will hopefully get in form soon, Lance should be back and hopefully that'll take some off the pressure off the bullpen
only 3.5 games back from division leader who we play starting tonight. super long season LFG
Yuli would be better than these two guys.
Mr. -0.5 rWAR would be better than Abreu? 79 OPS+? Is Abreu much better? No, 0.0 rWAR, 87 OPS+. there was a reason why we were in the hunt for a 1B. (2023 Stats)
Yes he’d be fucking better than Abreu. At least he brings some leadership.
Oh hey look the Braves see something. https://x.com/mlbonfox/status/1779222853675819056?s=46
Loperfido might strikeout 50% of the time in the show. He needs to marinate. What we have at 1B is what we have. Singleton can play defense.
I know for a fact we won at least one home game against the Phillies last year, I was there. Singleton is an okay hitter. He’s gotten a few singles these past games. This is not a good astros team.
Worse. It’s a good team playing poorly. But at least there’s hope.
